Firewire will not mount any external devices

I have tried to mount 2 different external hard drives and neither will mount. They will mount on other computers so it isn't the device. I've tried all the troubleshooting I have found on here and still no results. Is there any advice that maybe i haven't seen on the website or isn't on the website.
thanks

By default, my recently-purchased iMac (a refurb with Snow Leopard) was set to not show external drives on the Desktop. It's easily changed
Make sure you are in the Finder, then select "Preferences" from the Finder menu:
Now you'll see the options for what does and doesn't show on the Desktop:

  • T520 will not use any DVD Device

    Folks,
I was going to do a backup, when I noticed the DVD player was no longer showing under My Computer.
I when into the device manager, where it showed with a yellow X .. I tried updating the device driver, it said I already had the correct device. I did several other things - nothing worked.
I really wanted to get the backup done, so I took my portable DVD player/writer and connected it. The laptop found a device loaded OK ... but it did not show up under My Computer. I was the same issue as the internal DVD player.
Then I took a USB external Passport drive, connected to the same USB port, no issues .. It mounted the drive and I performed the backup.
My T520 will not use any DVD device ... any Ideas ?

Thanks .. That worked great ! I am saving that link ... It looks like it will fix other issues ... its not just a fix for the DVD player
True, somehow this area goes south now and then. Last time I used it was on an old XT system of someone. He had some techs try to fix his machine and couldn't. I had it working in half an hour altering the keys. LOL
You know there are exceptionally few KUDOS given on this forum for some reason and given the number of posts some people give or respond to. The great majority of posters just don't know or read it exists. Anyway good to see you up and running again.

  • Finder is not showing any external devices

I'm having problems with the Finder not seeing any external devices. First I tried to restart from a CD to run Tech Tools. Even though I held the "C" down, it kept popping out the CD and then restarting as usual instead. I gave up on that and tried to just run a backup to a Store-It drive (60 GB) hard drive by Hitachi, which connects by 2 USB connectors. Finder doesn't show it. Then to test, I tried putting in a small USB drive. Finder doesn't show it either. Any suggestions?
    Thanks very much!

This is what I've tried so far:
    1. Check that the USB device is connected to the appropriate jack. There is a USB jack in the back of most keyboards, but it often only works with a mouse.
    2. Unplug any USB devices and wait a few moments before reconnecting them. You can often fix problems with your USB keyboard and mouse by using this method. Try restarting your computer if the malfunction persists after you reconnect the USB device.
    3. Test your USB peripherals in another computer. If the problem exists in the second computer, you may need to have the device serviced or look for an updated version of the firmware that supports your USB item. Check the manufacturer's website for these updates.
    4. Try different devices in the same USB port. For example, if your mouse if behaving strangely, see whether an external drive or an iPod is able to connect to the computer via that USB port.
    5. Disconnect any USB hubs that you're using and connect each device one at a time to your computer. You need to troubleshoot the devices individually to find out whether the USB hub or the one of the devices is causing the problem. Be sure to test each peripheral with a working USB cable.
    6.  Reset the SMC
    7. Reset the parameter random access memory (PRAM) and nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) on your computer. Turn off your computer, then restart it and immediately press and hold the "Command," "Option," "P" and "R" keys on the keyboard. Release the keys after you hear the startup chime for the third time and your computer should boot normally.
I don't believe the controller is "dead" because I can still get some I/O, but no control.

    Hello there, DonnaLou.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some pretty extensive steps for troubleshooting Bluetooth issues:

  • Time Capsule will not mount new external HD

I have just bought a new iOmega 1TB external HD to connect to my Time Capsule. I have perviously been using a Western Digital 250gb external HD. I am having real problems getting the time capsule to mount the new hard drive, i have reformatted it to Apple Extended, but it still will not mount. However when i connect the old drive it mounts ok. Any ideas??

I am having exactly the same issue with a new Iomega 1TB hard disk.
The disk works fine when directly connected to a Mac. The Mac can read the TimeCapsule internal disk. The Mac can see the old, smaller WD external disk when it's connect to the TimeCapsule. But it can't see the new external disk via TimeCapsule.
I have reformatted the disk to MacExt journaled, I have rebooted each device in the chain. Just for kicks, I repartitioned the disk into smaller pieces, and tried reformatting as FAT. No joy.
    Any other ideas?

  • I stay in hotels alot and use my Airport Express to hard wire into hotel network. But hotels seem to have a sensor that will not allow any other device like my I-phone, I-pad to connect. Just one device and that's it.  Is there a setting to cure this?

I stay in hotels often and use my Airport Express to hardwire into the hotel's network.  This seems to work fine and allows my Macbook Pro to work wirelessly.
The problem is I cannot then hook up my Iphone or Ipad to the network.  It seems the hotels have a sensor and only allow one device on their network at a time.  Is there a setting in the setup of my Airport Express that might fix this problem?

If you have the AirPort Express setup in Bridge Mode, try changing the Connection Sharing setting to "Share a public IP address"
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
    Update
You will probably get a message about a Double NAT error. Click to "ignore"
This setting might allow mutliple devices to connect and may not. It's worth a try...I have about a 60-70% success rate at hotels with this setting.
Unfortunately, as you note....hotels have become a lot smarter about connections to their network. At some point, they probably will not even allow another router to connect at all.

  • ITunes on Windows will not update any iOS-device

I have three iOS-devices. An iPod Touch 3rd gen (ver 3.1.3), and iPhone 3GS (4.2.1) and iPad. It's been a really long time that I remember that iTunes offered to update any of them. iTunes itself has been regularly updating and is now 10.5.1.42. The PC is Windows 7 Home Premium.
So, no updates being offered when I sync the devices, it will always check and say it will check again in a few weeks. I agreed to borrow my iPad to a friend, wiped it, and the moment he hooked it up to his Mac-iTunes, it suggested iOS5. I then decided I need to get to the bottom of this update issue of my own iTunes. I started by downloading the relevant ipsw-files for my phone and Touch and trying a direct shift-restore update. The result is the message: The iPhone ... could not be updated because the firmware file is not compatible. Same message for the Touch.
I tried installing iTunes on another computer at home, same message if I check for an update. Same error message if I try using a local file. Tried putting the Touch in DFU-mode, in that case iTunes goes through a lengthy update process, but the result is the same 3.1.3 iOS.
Nothing in the hosts-file about Apple. The Touch and the iPhone have never had any beta-releases or jailbreak code. The only thing I can think of is that I have two iTunes-accounts. My regular European one, and one to the US store. However, the second iTunes I installed is empty of any purchases and only has been signed on with my European account.
Any ideas? Have not tried Apple Support yet...if I can even get it for this old devices...

  • My iphone 4 will not recognize any blutoooth devices

I purchased this phone from an apple store... it was a refurb. The bluetooth stopped working soon after the warranty  was up. I have tryied almost everything short of taking it apart and swaping out the MB.(?)
I have several bluetooth headsets none are 'discovered'. I have tried updating software, tuning bluetooth off and on. and restoring the phone.. ( which is a royal pain!)..
I am wondering if there is any tricks to getting the phone to do a systems check, find a problem and show an error code.. or what part I would actually need to replace..??
    thanks

Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • My iPhone 5 will not discover any Bluetooth devices I have. I followed the instructions after going to settings etc. and it just continues to search finding nothing. I've made sure the devices are on and ready

    Bluetooth not working

If the iPhone 5 was purchased yesterday, you should still be within your free ninety (90) days of complimentary phone support.  Was it purchased as a new device, or second-hand?
You have free options, such as the troubleshooting articles on this website:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3018
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3647
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1664
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4562
Another free option is to get fifteen minutes of free troubleshooting support at a local Apple store.
Another free option is the one that you just used, asking a question on this forum.
Apple customers that pay for the Apple Care Protection Plan ($69 for an iPhone 5, to get double the length of hardware warranty, and twenty-one (21) extra months of troubleshooting support over the phone, live with an tech), get priority over customers that have chosen not to use that service.
Use the right solution for your needs.  Some people are willing to pay for live tech support, others prefer the free options.

  • External drives will not mount on 10.2.3

whatever working drive i use (and i've tested a few), my old iMac (OS 10.2.3) will not mount anything external.
the drives work as evidence by the fact that they mount on my other Macs.
and the USB ports work (confirmed by testing the keyboard in each one).
yes, the Finder view preferences are set to show external drives.
to complicate matters, Disk Utility shows only the hardrive.
the issue is with 10.2.3 and i have no idea what's up.

It was not until Mac OS X 10.6.4, not possible to run on a 10.2 machine, that ExFat was supported.
Many older Macs also will not recognize GUID formatted partitions made to boot Intel Macs either.
10.2.3 is the first system to support Apple Partition Map HFS Extended (Jornalled).
There may be NTFS support based on my tip here:

My Apple Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite freezes 10.10.1 regularly. When it freezes the only remedy is to physical shut the screen and wait for the battery to run down. I do not run any external devices, and when it freezes you cannot do anything with the computer. It is new, and this problem is very frustrating. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Xsan will not mount on clients

Xsan updated recently to 1.4. Problem started on 1.3 Working fine until reboot of one of the client computers. Now Xsan volume will not mount on any client. Updated to 1.4, ran cvfsck. Still no go. Volume is over 90%. I have read that this may cause issues. How can I get files off if I cannot mount? Thanks!

    Try the following:
    From finder -->Go --> Go to folder --> /Volumes
Delete the alias for the XSAN volume you want to mount.
For whatever reason the alias sticks even if the volume was unmounted. Below is an explanation from Apple.
Xsan mounts will fail if they have the same name
Xsan will not mount any volume that has the same name as any existing volume or folder located at /Volumes/.
Unlike some mounting mechanisms that automatically resolve name conflicts (for example, the Finder will append characters to each mounted volume name), the Xsan backend agent simply won't mount the volumes.
To avoid this issue, create a unique name for each volume to be mounted.

  • External firewire disk partition will not mount

I have two external hard drives connected by a firewire to my 2002 G4 iMac running OSX 10.3.9. One is a 160GB and the second a 360GB drive.
I was out of the room when the area experienced a minor power drop in voltage and when I came back the iMac had the message to shut down and restart. When I restarted everything appeared normal until I realised that one partition did not mount on the 360GB drive. I ran Disk Utility to check the disk and it found some issues (I failed to write them down..) but Disk Utility appeared to fix them.
The disk has 2 partitions and only one of the two partitions will not mount (the second partition works fine!). Disk Utility says that both partitions check OK.
I have rebooted several times. I have removed all other external attachments and rebooted but still the partition will not mount.
I cannot see the partition in Finder. The second partition on the disk is available to see and use in Finder.
I have selected the partition in Disk Utility (grayed out) and tried the "mount" button but nothing happens. For some 18 months up until now the drive has worked fine although I did notice a couple of times it took a while for the drive to open up in Finder and other applications. I use that particular partition daily, it has approx 100GB used of the 150GB total space.
When I ran Disk Utility it comes up with a variation in the results compared with the partition that has mounted OK. The result of running "Verify Disk" is listed below. The only diffeerence between the two partitions is the first line of each volume. Does the ",0" following "Checking HFS Plus volume." for the first partition called "Genesys1" indicate anything?
    DISK UTILITY REPORT
    Verifying volume “Genesys1”
    Mounting Disk(S,"Checking HFS Plus volume.",0)
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Genesys1 appears to be OK.
    Verifying volume “Genesys2”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Genesys2 appears to be OK.
    2 volumes checked
       2 HFS volumes verified
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards

Hello! Power failures are murder on disk drive directories as you have found out. Your best shot is to get DISKWARRIOR. It is the "gold standard" for these types of problems and can usually resolve the issue when Disk Utility cannot. As with any utility there are times when even it cannot fix things but it's the best there is at resolving such issues. Tom
