First Experience

Just wanted to share my first experience with my new Mac Mini Server so others may avoid some frustration.
Last night, I turned on my brand new Mac Mini Server. I already had an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Might Mouse and plugged in my usual LDC monitor using the HDMI-DVI converter. The first screen I see shows me that I need to turn on my mouse. Great so I do. I then proceed through the first couple screens of Setup Assistant until I have to enter the Mac OS X Server serial key. I then realize it never paired with my wireless keyboard and since I only have old PS2 keyboards and no USB keyboards, I'm presently hosed. So I turn the machine off and reboot a few times to find that Setup Assistant now disconnects the mouse when displaying the big "X" splash animation. Great, I can't even get back to where I was before. So I read the manual and proceed with a remote setup using my MacBook Pro. I install the Server Admin tools and it finds my MacMini. I click to select it and click the Set Up button. Nothing ever happened: Setup Assistant never opened. Great.
After a while I remember an old KVM switch which just happened to have PS2 inputs and USB outputs so I'm back in business. I finally get through Setup Assisant and now logged in to the administrator account. While running Software Update, it downloads both an Apple Wireless Keyboard firmware update and a Server Admin tools update. Well that probably explains my initial problems. Even after the update, it took several attempts to re-pair the keyboard. I never tried running remote Setup Assistant after that.
So lessons learned: a.) Make sure your wireless keyboard has the latest firmware updates before turning on your Mac Mini Server for the first time; b.) after installing Server Admin tools from the packaged DVD, check for and install updates before using them for remote setup.

As you do have a running XP maybe you start with a plain Sun Ray Server (5.2.3) to get started and to get familiar with the system (in fact, we are just using physical Win7 and lot of WTS as backend) ...
1.) Install Virtual Box (we are are running on ESX)
2.) Install Solaris x64
3.) Install Sun Ray Server
4.) Install Oracle Virtual Desktop Client on your Laptop
4.) Create a kiosk to your XP laptop like e.g
-bash-3.00# utkiosk -e pc7145
KIOSK_SESSION=uttsc
KIOSK_SESSION_TIMEOUT_DETACHED=12000
KIOSK_SESSION_ARGS=-l de-DE -E wallpaper -E theming -r scard:on xpXXXX (hostname of your XP PC)
KIOSK_ENABLED=yes
as default kiosk ... (called uttsc in Sun Ray, i.e an RDP Connection to your PC)
5.) start OVDC and connect to your sun ray server, it will show up with with the login screen of your PC.
more info is here http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/sunrayproducts/docs/index.html
I'm running such an environment for about 200 Sun Rays (HW), OVDC (SW) and in the future iPad Clients (iOS) in production, the only difference to your idea is that we are using ESX as Hypervirosr for the Sun Ray Server and not Virtual Box.

how do a get a refund on a ridiculously slow downloading rented movie for my apple tv dispite a >5mb/sec down load speed? my first experience with appletv movie rental. no good. rented at 4:30pm. still waiting for standard def movie to finish at 8:10pm. Not good enough.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

  • This my first experience with itunes and using a gift carddownloaded an album and only half of a few songs played before jumping to the next song

This is my first experience with itunes and I chose to download a Mark Knopfler album. The first three songs stopped half way and instantly started the next song. How do I re-load the songs since i now "own" them? Thanks. Luce.

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

  • First experience -- hot/cold

    In  regards to posting: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=59846
My problem with it was first it took 1+ years to close it. In addition, I was a newbie with 0 experience with Arch. Furthermore, I had no problem with the admin closing it forever, except that then person did  not provide a link to the Arch solution (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sudo). Allan (http://bbs.archlinux.org/profile.php?id=11253) the admin probably knew it, and may have overlooked it, but he should have added the solution before closing it. In otherwords, my post was incorrect, and the solution allen provided to a newbie was a dumb link that gave him authority (reason) to close it, but  no real solution.
As for the whitespace, I had no X, and was using lynx, for which, I had little experience (damn, now I know why people don't want Adboe taking over the world with so-called internet rich experiences --- just put in plain text. I guess, that's another story...
So, can some adim correct http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=59846  and add a link to the Arch solution?
    Regards,
    Mark J. Olesen

yep, your right again, Arch is not for the beginer or interested in learning. In otherwords, that's the general  idea of Arch --- piss off if you don't now what your doing.
So, again, I say, install Arch on an old barbones PC X86 architecture, without any previous knowledge of Arch, and  no X --- don't rely on it nel to provide sevices, and see where you get I hate to ifnorm you it's noit arch, but the kernel, that is providing services to the packages that Arch installs by default.
If you don't understand anything I am saying, then I assume you have some modern computer that has the latest kernel, and just goes along with the flow...
My original post is still relevant.
Give it a try with older hardware such as a dell i ...
In addition, someone should update all wikis pertaining to hwd, it is also outdated.
Please, goto your terminal and issue hwd -X (doesn't exist).
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg
    Try to install it,
First, install the hwd package from the AUR.
    (doesn't exist)
There is the cold. Nobody, gives a crap because there system is working, and  nobody else cares to change old documentation.
Get a person who knows nothing about Arch, and nothing about *nix type sytems, and they will be lost. First thier community  doesn't even't try to understand the plight of an underprivliaged user and there beginer comunity is full of people who  already has the greatest working on thier expensive laptops.
Their answer, can't solve it---not my problem.  In other words, it works for me, too bad for you ---  your on your own.

  • Problems Converting from Form6i to Forms10g/Reports10g - first experiences

    Hello,
We are converting a Forms6i application to Forms10g.
There is one fmb-file with a size of more than 3100kb.
First step and surprise is that after using the
forms migration assistant for converting the file from
6i to 10g the size is minimized and now about 1000kb.
We did not use the migration assistant and opened all
    6i files with FormBuilder10g (WindowsXP)
Assuming that the conversion will be done if we are saving the file in form10g-builder.
After doing a lot of chances in the big-fmb file and saving it -
closing the form and opening it - the changes were lost!
(Perhaps because there was more than one crash of form builder?)
    My questions are:
    - how can i check if the integrity of my fmb-file is ok?
    - is the minimum hardware requirement for developing a 10g-FMB file on a PC more than > 256MB RAM/450 MHz Processor?
    - for WindowsXP there is a DeveloperSuite 10g PreView -
what does that mean? when will the final version be released?
    My experiences are:
    - if you are integrating a 10g Report with a parameter form in forms10g: first it does not work - you have to integrate a javabean in forms (encrypted userid in cookie
before calling the report) or the other solution i read was funny with nearly no security (userid in hex in the url).
how can u call a 10g report from the web without writing all your credentials in cgicmd.dat and without having oid (single sign on)?
a solution would be writing your credentials encrypted in a cookie and then calling the report with the parameter form -
but how? if you have never done java before?
    - handling with formbuilder10g is much more slower than formbuilder6i: is forms10g written in java?
    - you have to do a lot of configuration before calling a report on your development pc.
thx for any comments and tips
    ps:
shall i use webforms10g now or learn java/jdeveloper or wait for java.net (=cooperation Microsoft and Sun)? <

    Hello Frank,
Thank you for your 9i/10i secure calls to web.show_document solution. I spend hours with it but could'nt get it working. I followed all the instructions from the pdf document. Everything looks fine ( java console output included ) but the cookie isn't created.
I watched the tcp packet for the http header to see if any cookie information was included, but this isn't the case. I switched browsers (IE5 and IE6) and changed their security settings to very low. Nothing seems to matter. Still getting the REP-51018: Need database user authentication error. What am I doing wrong???
I'm running 9.0.4 (10g) forms reports services edition on Windows 2000.

  • First experiences with LR 5.0: manual file selection and  Adjustment Brush

I must admit that I have not fiddled too long with LR 5.0. The reason is quite simple: its extreme slowness, even in comparison with 4.4, which is far from being fast. After slightly retouching some 40 images I fell back to 4.4 and finished testing 5.5 for a while. Anyway, in addition to the speed problem I have collected some - also not too promising - experiences:
After initially retouching the first image I wanted to copy some of its settings into the rest of the photos. Before clicking on the Sync button I had to select all the target files. Probably because of the relatively small number of images, instead of going to the "Edit / Select All" function I used "Shift+Right Arrow" for the selection. LR simply crashed...
In several cases I was not able to re-open and modify formerly 'adjustment-brushed' areas. When I moved the cursor above the relevant white 'knob-shaped' mark, nothing happened. The cursor did not even change to hand form, so the "Effect" panel remained dark and the formerly set parameters did not come up. As I kept the cursor there for ages and the image was not 'over-adjusted' (as also indicated by the small size of the associated XMP file), this failure was surely not a result of the above-referred slowness.
Once I selected an already retouched image, with the Adjustment Brush tool open. The existing adjustment mark came up over a formerly brushed area. Then, without doing anything with the open image, I moved to the next picture. To my surprise, the Adjustment Brush marks of both photos appeared on the last opened image - the one, which belonged to the previous picture and another, associated with the second picture. It goes without saying that I was not able to click on any of the Adjustment Brush marks. Closing and re-opening the Adjustment Brush tool did not help, so I had to restart LR.

  • Not a great first experience - what are my options?

i just had FIOS instlaled on 9/16...I switched from comcast.
by the end of the second day I had 3 issues:
    1) one of the set top boxes (1 of 3)  just didn't work..the whole installation took about 6 hours. I assume this is something that should be checked before the technician leaves?   - I called and they are drop shipping me another box
    2) the channels the salesman told me I'd get were not the ones i received - meaning there are less than expected - I called about this and the rep told me there is nothing he can do.  The order says this so you get this.   It was like he really didn't care at all if I had a good first use experience with Verizon.   I feel like I did something wrong since I didn't get it in writing when I was on the phone - but I definitely feel like i was overpromised.
    3) I hosted a webex conference call today and my new FIOS  internet kicked me off about 4 times in 4 hours - which stops the meeting for everyone.   The speed appears to be identical to Comcast, but the high frequency of drops is unexpected.  is this normal?
I haven't returned my Comcast boxes yet and am considering switching back.  Any advice?
    thanks -
    Adam

That's the problem with this company...what they tell you and what you get are two different things.  One company is bad, the other is worse.  I can't wait for "someone" to show up and end this monopoly.

  • What was your first experience owning a laptop?

For many its a dream , for others looking around, its a sign of becoming envious one of these days, what was it like for you when you got your first laptop, and what kind was it? What was the reaction of others around you when you had it out in public for the first time?
    Netbook comments welcome, too!

Was nice to be able to sit in the living room while browsing the net instead of having to be at the computer desk. Never cared what people thought when I had it outside. People who use electronics as a status symbol need to be smacked upside the head. I really cant stand it when people make it a point to let everyone around them know they are using a blackberry (or any other 'in' cell phone) and are now gonna text and email so and so. No one cares about your conversation so quit speaking so loud so everyone with 50' can hear you and for the love of God dont use speakerphone in public especially in a restaurant.
BTW first laptop was a HP Pavillion ze4315. Lasted 6 yrs before finally giving up the pooch.

  • Non-nike shoe first experience

I used the sport kit for the first time today with my New Balance shoes. The distance was off terribly - distance was actually 3.7 miles but it monitored it as 1.52 miles. I put the sensor under the insole of my left foot...and it did move around slightly during the run...Not sure if I need to buy the Nike shoes or if calibrating the sensor would help - this is a really BAD reading and I am slightly discouraged!

Of course, Nike makes a great shoe, so for most people the simplest & best solution will be to buy the Nikes. But having different shoes will not keep you from using the Nike+ Sport Kit.
I have heard many excellent runners who have a problem with Nike shoes (because they need custom made shoes or they have wide feet or any number of issues) say that they are successfully using the Nike+ sensor with non-Nike shoes. Some people carve out the same kind of hole in their non-Nike brand that the Nikes have. (It's not that hard to carve a hole to fit the sensor.)
Others have simply placed the sensor under their laces where the tongue attaches (making sure it is really secure--this is problematic with some brands). Others have used various means to attach the sensor in roughly the same position.
Still others, like myself, have cut a SMALL slit in the fabric of the underside of the tongue just above where it attaches and popped the sensor in there.
As long as the sensor is not moving sliding around freely but is fixed in position and is relatively level, your readings will not be affected.

  • My first Mac and first experience with iPhoto.  Need help

Hello everyone. I just purchased my first Mac, a Mini, last week and I'm trying to learn how iPhoto works. I've been able to import picturs from my NAS (network attached storage) drive which holds all our photos, music and videos.
However, when I took pictures over the weekend, I wanted to put them on the NAS as well and have them automatically import into iPhoto. I like that iPhoto lets you put a description about the pictures, but I can't find a way to type a description and then set iPhoto to save the pictures to my NAS drive.
I ended up just saving them to the NAS drive and then importing again and telling iPhoto to not import duplicates. The problem with that is I get folders called thumbnails and then I get messages telling me the Thumbs.db files are not readable and those are coming from my camera card or the NAS drive, maybe because it was formatted on a PC. I know Thumbs is a PC item.
With my old PC, it allowed me to pick where I wanted my photos stored and what name I would like to call the pictures and then it named them all in succession automatically. Will iPhoto do this and if so, how do I do that? And how do I enter descriptions about my old photos to make them easier to find during a search?
Thanks for the help. While the Mac is very similar to my old PC, there sure are a lot of things I'm unfamiliar with. But with time and some help from experts like you, I'm sure I'll get comfortable with it.
    John

    John
iPhoto is a photo organiser - that is a database. Like any database the data has to be imported into the application.
What format is that NAS? iPhoto does not sit happily on disks that are not formatted for Mac OS X (journalled). You will find issues with saving changes to the db and with sharing pics among other apps.
You can put a library on an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
With my old PC, it allowed me to pick where I wanted my photos stored and what name I would like to call the pictures and then it named them all in succession automatically. Will iPhoto do t
No. For a start, filenames have no relevance in iPhoto - it's all about visual organisation. You can attach titles, keywords and comments to pics, of course, and can add them to the File on export.
If you want to set the pics in a spot, then do that with the Finder and thereafter import them. You can use a batch file renamer such as FileList to rename the files prior to import.
and telling iPhoto to not import duplicates.
Using a Referenced rather than a Managed library means that iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
As a general comment: iPhoto is a bit different from most photo apps. It's happiest when it manages the files and lets you go on to manage your Photos. That's a key distinction though, between Files and Pictures. iPhoto is about Pictures, not Files.
You do all your work in the iPhoto Window - there is never a need to go into the Photo Library on the Hard Disk. To find and access photos:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    To use an external editor
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
By all means post again if you need more info.
    Regards
    TD

  • My first experience(review) with ICS

    Hello everyone,
Hopefully i got my share of ICS update on my Xperia Mini Pro although my SI number was not listed on the blog/thread. It is working smoothly and i have spent around 5 hours checking all of its new features.. I am writing my experiences with it. Others are welcome to add their experiences.
The New Face Unlock feature is awesome although i experience some difficulties with it. Sometimes when i try to unlock my phone, the face unlock screen appears black(for about 2/3 sec) then the Pattern unlock screen(for 2/3 secs) and then the Face Unlock screen appears. Don't know whether this is happening only to me or not.
I am unhappy with the new screenshot feature. The previous screenshot feature(of GB) is more user friendly with this one. You need to press the Power button and the Volume down key to take a screenshot, which i think is not good.
The notification light of the new ICS is buggy. Sometimes the led for sms will blink and other times, it will not. Also, the notification for Facebook is also not working as in GB.
The Album art of my songs will not appear on the Android Music Player(this was not the case in GB), some do appear.
It takes 5/6 secs for the Contact page to appear.
Love the new Gallery(not Xperia Gallery), although some features like Share,Crop etc are missing.
The video player is not good as it is used to be.. Earlier, in GB a particular video shows correctly but in ICS the video would show smaller...
The new Status Switch is good, i like the battery meter..
The confirm dialog while deleting sms is different. Earlier the Yes box appears on the left side and No on the right, but now it is different. It will take quite a few days to get to this new change.
I like the new FONT SIZE feature under Settings> Display.
    Hoping to add more ...

Thank you for the nice description TIP: should write here:

Hi everyone. Just did a fresh install and pacman -Syu so everything should be up to date. Installed alsa-utils and made sure Master and PCM were unmuted. My goal here is to create a headless PC that interfaces with my radio, in order to use digital modes like RTTY and PSK.
EDIT: Forgot to mention here the nature of the problem -- no sound at all. However, the program fldigi seems to be able to get input from the Line In.
pavucontrol shows the meter moving when sound is being generated. Here's the output from lsmod | grep snd:
    snd_via82xx            17875  4
    snd_via82xx_modem       7514  0
    snd_ac97_codec         89368  2 snd_via82xx,snd_via82xx_modem
    snd_wavefront          28274  0
    ac97_bus                 874  1 snd_ac97_codec
    snd_cs4236             22200  0
    snd_wss_lib            18042  2 snd_wavefront,snd_cs4236
    snd_opl3_lib            7122  2 snd_wavefront,snd_cs4236
    snd_hwdep               4778  2 snd_wavefront,snd_opl3_lib
    snd_mpu401_uart         4783  3 snd_via82xx,snd_wavefront,snd_cs4236
    snd_rawmidi            14796  2 snd_wavefront,snd_mpu401_uart
    snd_pcm                65796  5 snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec,snd_wss_lib,snd_via82xx_modem,snd_cs4236
    snd_timer              15006  3 snd_wss_lib,snd_pcm,snd_opl3_lib
    snd_seq_device          4252  2 snd_rawmidi,snd_opl3_lib
    snd                    44583  21 snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_wss_lib,snd_pcm,snd_rawmidi,snd_wavefront,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_via82xx_modem,snd_seq_device,snd_cs4236,snd_opl3_lib
    gameport                6202  2 snd_via82xx,ns558
    soundcore               4354  1 snd
It seems excessive to me but I don't remember this motherboard too well. This is all built-in sound. I installed Pulseaudio as this seems to be the preferred method in fldigi, the program I'm using.
    I feel like I'm forgetting a few outputs, here's aplay -l:
    card 0: V8237 [VIA 8237], device 0: VIA 8237 [VIA 8237]
      Subdevices: 4/4
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
      Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
      Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
      Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
    card 0: V8237 [VIA 8237], device 1: VIA 8237 [VIA 8237]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I'm happy to provide more information. Every other arch install I've done has worked flawlessly, first time I've ever encountered audio problems.
I'm going to re-read the ALSA, OSS and Pulseaudio wiki entries, even though I feel like I'm still not grasping something.
A sincere thank-you for everyone's help here. I can get the alsa-info.sh script as well, if that will help.
    EDIT: Here's the alsa-info output: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=6930c … 86954423ed

What have you used to try to push sound through?
    Have you tried:
    aplay -L
    null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
    default:CARD=VT82xx
    HDA VIA VT82xx, ALC662 rev1 Analog
    Default Audio Device
    sysdefault:CARD=VT82xx
    HDA VIA VT82xx, ALC662 rev1 Analog
    Default Audio Device
    front:CARD=VT82xx,DEV=0
    HDA VIA VT82xx, ALC662 rev1 Analog
    Front speakers
    Then:
    speaker-test -Dplug:default -c2 -l1
Try changing 'default' to one of playback devices output by aplay -L
Have you tried any 'model=' options for the module?

  • First experience buying from Adobe

So it was a Sunday afternoon, my Flash Builder trial had expired, and I decided to purchase a license and spend a few hours with the Builder before going out.
Instead, I spent 4 hours, got charged the $249, and never received a thing.
First, the free trial's Buy link didn't even take me to the same product (standard builder), it took me to something costing over 3x as much (PHP Premium) that I don't need, and there was no way to get to anything else from there.  Had to go to the main Adobe site and look around, and it wasn't easy to find what I was looking for or compare prices.  Confusing site.
Next, of course I wanted the latest version, 4.6.  But only 4.5 was available for sale.  Presuming there would be a free upgrade (having to upgrade  right after buying), I went ahead and took the plunge, spent the $249.
It took about half an hour just to get the 1st order-related email, which had no link and no key.  Over an hour later, another email came through with a link.  After creating a password etc. and logging in, there was nothing there -- no serial #, no download.  Looking back at the 1st email, there was a disclaimer saying it could take up to 24 hours.  Well, why didn't they say that up-front.  These days usually when you buy a downloadable product, you get it right away.
I contacted support intending to say either let me have what I bought now, or cancel the order.  Their chat makes you enter a bunch of stuff and explain the problem, but they don't seem to read any of that, they ask you for it all over again and don't answer the question.  Then they changed that "24 hours" online-delivery estimate to "48-72 hours".  Eventually, they sent me a form to fill out, print, sign, have scanned, and send back to them -- to cancel an order I hadn't received yet.  Then I had to contact them again because the form requires a case number, but they hadn't given me that.  And they never would, he just said look in your account under open cases.
So, what a pain.  All they had to do was send me a serial number... how hard is it, for $249?
and that's why people go looking for keygens for Adobe software.  They charge too much, and buying it is more trouble than cracking it!

Looking forward to when I can afford a laptop fast enough to run Everything under virtualization.  Then everything (including Windows) can be activated once and will never have to be re-activated.  Replace your computer, no problem, just copy the VM over.  Got a virus?  Just go back to a restore point.  But I tried this for a year and it's just too slow on current hardware...
BTW, I'm still waiting for the refund. The charge disappeared from pending in my account for days, then they sent an email saying your refund has been processed... and the charge re-appeared as posted on that date, with no refund chargeback pending.  So it appears they 'accidentally' re-charged me instead of refunding.  Merry Xmas, we'll keep your money safe for you.

  • Lenovo Yoga - My first experience with a notebook - my last with Lenovo

    Short story about myself:
    I am a designer (print/web) and a coder (Web).
I started my studying and thought it was time to get a Notebook as the iPad would not cut the productivity needed anymore. I was mostly working at the office or at home. But studying and the big breaks would make it impossible to get along both of those places so I needed a way to work while I was on the go.
So I decided to buy a Notebook. It was down to a few models but the Lenovo Yoga 13" caught me.
My i5 version had some great specs. Starting at 8GB ram going down to the IPS screen at HD resolution all was fine.
I picked it up in February just before my birthday as a little present and motivation for myself.
Trouble began right after I received it. The Space key was not responsive on the bottom left corner and the keyboard was wobbly. I was kind of disappointed as I have always read that Lenovo does great Keyboards, the Yoga does not seem to have one. I know that the keyboard won't be as great as the mechanical Keyboard I have lying around here, but that bad ?
The keyboard is what I would imagine a keyboard would feel like printed on a pad of silicone.
Fan Noise, unbearable. Working in a quiet environment is impossible. I don't want to hear any noise from a device that is using an SSD. Other manufacturers are able to shut down noise, why is Lenovo not able to ? After working several nights with the Yoga and then switching one night over to my iPad I realized how terriblly disturbing that noise was. So I did a quick search came along the forums and saw a big thread which has even grown bigger. You see customers basically begging for an Update on the Fan Noise issue. The thread has 90 pages most of them people trying to figure a way out. Some even plug out their fans and yet the Yoga runs stable.
So , we could question how much effort went into that poorly designed patch for the Yoga.  It does not seem like a lot , despite the fact it took so long. I know how to Manage Information System Projects but I don't understand the time involved. Either there are problems you don't want to admit to your customer (bad documentation, no ressources, design flaw ... ) or you simply lack the ability to understand what your customer wants.
After I got sick of the issues which bothered me day by day I went into the store and registered a complaint. They sent it in.
    I had the following issues:
    Space Key not responsive
Top of the keyboard and right edge loose
    Fan loud and always running
    High Frequent Noise
Ability to turn on the device while lid is closed AND fans running at the same time
    It came back:
Module changed, Bios Update, Test run
I took the device and inspected it in the store with a salesman. We both noticed a bump at the wasd keys thus we knew something went wrong and opened up the keyboard at the edge just to find out the official repair service used some double sided tape above the RAM slot. Space key was responsive now but the Keyboard had a big wave rising up at the left and lowering down at the right side. The fans were still running, I still had a high frequent noise and the ability to turn on the device while the lid was closed was still possible.
So in the next hour without exiting the store I filled in another complaint. Waited another two weeks and got the message that I should be paying for the next repair. Incredible strategy. Do the repair bad and let the customer pay.  But that is not how you should deal with your customers. After speaking with the service guy , who seems to have spoken with Lenovo's service partner they took over the cost.
So now my Yoga was back.
The whole keyboard was exchanged as it seems (it looked pretty new so I assume it was changed) - The repair information just said "module changed"
After just about an hour of using the keyboard was lose again.
Guess what I went back to the store and now it was the time to request my money. Of course I had to wait for another 2 weeks.
It was a total downtime of 2 months and worst service I have ever seen. Especially that double sided tape was hilarious and unprofessional and made up for some good laughs.
And today I got my money back thanks to the law system we have here in Germany , which saves customers like me from faulty products.
In the time I did not have my Yoga I tried out several in stores and found the same errors over and over again and mostly with the keyboard. So it seems like a design flaw to me. A very bad one.
Colors were scrapping of the edges even on mine to which was handled with a lot of care and carried with a very nice incase sleeve which has some very soft fur inside.
Fan Noise on all of them. Some were even worse than mine.
I am a very disappointed customer and  I don't think I will come back again to Lenovo and a lot of my friends won't get any recommandation at least not for the "casual" series. This should go straight to your quality assurance department.
You should know that you only have one chance to do it right. And if you do it wrong at least care a bit. If you don't your customers will simply move on such as me.
I hope that everyone who enjoys his Yoga continues to do so and everyone who has complaints to put up their voice so you can be heard and people who are responsible for the flaws start correcting them.
I am happy to be out of that beg for something but don't receive anything circle.

    1) When trying to update software via bb desktop manager, a 12 step process, the procedure progresses to step 6 then displays a "fatal error" message. Could be multiple causes see the correct procedure in the link below.
2)Trying to download apps from appworld getting the message that the radio must be turned on. where do i find the radio? The radio being referred to is your device radio you use for voice and data. Click on manage connections icon> make sure Mobile is checked.
