Flash 4- Web services

Hi,
I am using the Flash 4 beta to connect to web services, my connections are fine and everything works as it should.
I added a call to the web services on a button Click event and noticed I need to somehow wait for the response back from the web services before continue with the click event. How do I wait for the result back from the web services call in a button click event?
I hope I put this in the right forum if not my apologies.
Thanks

• Help needed with flash and web service call

Hi all,
I need some help with web services and flash. I'm very new to flash, so please have that in the back of your mind when reading this :-)
I've got a .swf file, and I would like to display a number received from a web service (using adobe flash professional cs5). Ive added the web service and provided the WSDL, but when i try to "Add Method Call", nothing happens. Why? What am I doing wrong?
Hope someone can help

start with the button that causes the text to be displayed. find what it does (which may not be easy because most templates are coded by novice or intermediate level coders) and follow that trail to the text. (note: the text may be in a txt or xml file that's loaded.)
to have a button release open a file, use:
yourbtn.onRelease=function(){
getURL("http://www.adobe.com");

• Web Service calls Blocked in Flash Player 9/10

This is a common issue, so if someone knows of a thread that would help, please point me in the right direction. I was unable to find an exact match on my own.
The project:
I've created a video player which contacts a web service on a remote machine. It retreives a user's viewing progress, reports it back to the player, and advances them to their last location. Testing this locally from within the Flash IDE works fine, as do other web services (such as the ones found on webservicex.net). I'm using the as3webservice package from wellconsidered (http://code.google.com/p/as3webservice/) which has worked flawlessly in testing so far.
The issue:
When finally uploading the swf to a remote server (which is NOT the same as the one that hosts the web service) the web service hangs; not generating a fault, but basically not connecting at all (appears to be hanging/timing out). Research led me to create a crossdomain.xml policy file, which I uploaded to the root and subdirecctories of the machine hosting the webservice:
<cross-domain-policy>
<allow-access-from domain="*"/>
</cross-domain-policy>
This is the one used by most services, including public ones like webservicex.net. Creating this file (named crossdomain.xml) and uploading it did not help at all. I also noticed that when testing the public web service for contrast, they didn't connect either.
I found another article which led me to believe that the cross domain xml file needs to be modified for new security rules in Flash Player 9/10 - This article applies to Flex, but i'm assuming Flash Player is Flash Player:
http://blog.flexmonkeypatches.com/2008/09/29/flex-waylaid-by-webservices-and-flash-player- security-changes/
can anyone confirm this is the case, or share an experience/solution with me that falls within the same ballpark? I'm hung up on this and don't know what to tell the server admins/devs that are working with me on this project. They don't know what to do.
Thanks, fred

I don't know that this is a CS4 issue, but in my experience it's been a for as long as I've used Flash issue... If you have the same symbol as diffferent instances in adjacent frames but give it a different name in those frames, the latter instance will adapt the name of the preceding one. Your best bet may be to assign the same name in both frames, though an alternative would be to shift one to a differ layer than the other.
There's still something of the error or your description that makes me wonder, but it's worth seeing if making a change as suggested takes care of things.

• Problem for web service path for Xcelsius engage in flash object

Hi, All
I had created one xcelsius through Web Service of SAP B1.it works well.
but when I run the flash object came from xcelsius by explorer,it gives one message
"Can not access external data"
thier I have to give path for swf file and web service path -- (which is given at the time of connection of xcelsius through web service in data manager)
and I have to run the web service then it shows
the dash board made from Xcelsius very well.
but when i change the path of same web service to other m/c then flash file does work and it gives message
"Can not access external data"
but in practical my web service path can be changed, it should not fixed for path which is given in data manager in Xcelsius.
I am using Xcelsius Engage 2008 sp3
please give suggetions for solve the problem
thanks in advance

Hi Venky CRMIT, Bruce007
Aside from the question, I tried another methods and I have succeeded calling webservice. A reference URL is
http://www.webbasedcrmsoftware.com.au/crm-on-demand-tutorials/65-java-access-to-crm-on-demand#_Toc224720963
Main cause may be jsessionID as you guess. When I try with EAI, I have send login information and message call at once, so URL may be incorrect.
Thank you for your help.

• How to use Flash Media Live Encoder as a web Service

Coud we use the Flash Media Live Encoder as a Web Service installed on another Server (Preferebaly on the Flash Media Server Itself).

FMLE is typically used on the client side, and it doesn't have any sort of API that you would use to run it as a service. That said, unless you wanted to publish a camera that is connected to the server, I'm not sure why you'd want to run FMLE as a service.
Perhaps if you explain what is is you want to accomplish....

• Flash CS3 and Web Services (again)

Ok, I'm sorry to be going on about this... I've seen the
question asked before, but I am yet to find an answer.
-I just noticed that the Web Service Connector targets only
AS2. Along with several other components.
I was hoping to find CS3 working BETTER with web services, as
an example I kind of hoped that the long awaited feature of being
able to consume a .NET dataset would be there... But instead there
is absolutely nothing.
So, if the Adobe plan is to say "Ok, you want to hook up to
web services? -Get Flex!" - well then I'd appreciate knowing about
it.
Or, if the plan is to release hot, lovely, fresh components
for CS3 to do this - I'd SURE like to know about that!
Not knowing what to expect is stupid. Decisions on future
projects need to be made. I Don't mean to scare you Adobe guys but
..."Silverlight"... ;-)
So, if anyone has anything on this (CS3 data components/web
services that is) I'd very much appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks!

JSON is undeniably useful. It's a great way to get data back
and forth, but SOAP is a standard in almost all programming
languages now and JSON isn't native in flash (not slagging it, it's
just not native).
<gettingonasoapbox>Webservices are one of the greatest
tools available to web application programmers and one of the best
innovations in web development in the past 5 years.
</gettingonasoapbox>
I've built a number of large scale flash applications based
off of this ridiculously simple protocol and to make the switch to
JSON (that's not supported natively) just to use AS3 is a fairly
large endeavor especially since AS2 is not really "bad". Plus,
webservices have been a constant in the past TWO versions of flash.
It's hard to see that it would be an oversight to leave it out. It
feels deliberate, especially without any explanation as to it's
mysterious disappearence.
The message this gives to us Flash developers is that Adobe
will change it's product without warning, explanation, or even
deprecating the class, and that you must adapt to a new product
(Flex). However, who's to say that Flex will not be changed as
well? AS3 has been around for a long time at this point, so I don't
think it's a matter of time.
The small component pack is understandable for the initial
release with a later update, but it appears that there is not going
to be a tree view component for AS3. In the newest version of Cold
Fusion, they switched the tree component to an ajax control instead
of a flash based one.
http://www.forta.com/blog/index.cfm/2007/6/5/ColdFusion-Ajax-Tutorial-5-File-System-Browsi ng-With-The-Tree-Control
I don't want to be a complainer or a luddite, but I just
really realy really really really really want to use AS3 :) No
webservice class is a total showstopper and will quickly turn flash
into just an animation tool instead of an RIA development tool. You
can't continue to build applications on a protocol that ceases to
be supported.
Then again, maybe I'm a minority in the developer group.
Maybe if we Digg this thread and maybe Adobe will take
notice.

• Flash Builder 4 - Web Services

Hi,
I am using the Flash 4 beta to connect to web services, my connections are fine and everything works as it should.
I added a call to the web services on a button Click event and noticed I need to somehow wait for the response back from the web services before continue with the click event. How do I wait for the result back from the web services call in a button click event?
Thanks
David................

Are you doing something like this -
protected function button_clickHandler(event:MouseEvent):void
webService.operation1();
.....some code here......
So, as the calls are aynchronous, you'll not get the response just after calling the operation.
You need to wait for the result from the operation call and do things after the result has come, something like -
private var operationResult:CallResponder = new CallResponder();
protected function button_clickHandler(event:MouseEvent):void
operationResult.addEventListener(ResultEvent.RESULT,resultHandler);
operationResult.token = webService.operation1();
protected function resultHandler(event:ResultEvent):void
// result can be accessed through operationResult.lastResult or event.result
.....some code here......

• Flash builder 4 - web services error

good day,
I'm trying out flash builder 4 beta connect to a simple web service I've created (gsoap calc example). using the connect data/service
tab, I choose the web service and enter the service name and wsdl location (on localhost). fb4 retrieves the wsdl and shows all the methods
available but when I click finish I get a terse unresolved model error message any suggestions thanks in advance. The web service is runs
on the local host so I don't think its a cross domain issue

sigh, sorry for the problems:

• Using web services with flash cs3 and actionscript 3.0

Hi,
I want to use web services under flash cs 3 and by using as
3.0.
It was possible with as 2.0 to do it easily thanks to the
webservice Connector.
But I can't find how to use web services under flash and as
3.0.
I thought web services took part of the many improvements
flash cs 3.0 contain, but obviously it does not:(
Can anybody help me to use webservices with flash cs 3 and as
3.0?
Thanks in advance,
Pascal

Dark Armor, You mentioned the book Adobe Flash CS4 Professional Classroom in a Book, which I have. I could not find anything in there. Did you mean to say Actionscript 3.0 for Adobe Flash CS4 Professional? I do have that book and it looks like there is information there. Just wanting to make sure that you meant what you said. Thanks!

• Web service method binding (flash builder issue)

I have a new Flash Builder (Flex) project, basically it has 2 combo boxes in it. I have added a web service, the service is called uws_lookups and has 2 methods, lookupLanguage and lookupCountry.
If I bind a combobox to the result from either of these services everything works as expected, here is the code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
xmlns:uws_lookups="services.uws_lookups.*"
minWidth="955" minHeight="600">
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import com.adobe.serializers.utility.TypeUtility;
import mx.controls.Alert;
import mx.events.FlexEvent;
protected function comboBox_creationCompleteHandler(event:FlexEvent):void
lookupCountryResult.token = uws_lookups.lookupCountry();
]]>
</fx:Script>
<fx:Declarations>
<s:CallResponder id="lookupCountryResult"/>
<uws_lookups:Uws_lookups id="uws_lookups"
fault="Alert.show(event.fault.faultString + '\n' + event.fault.faultDetail)"
showBusyCursor="true"/>
<!-- Place non-visual elements (e.g., services, value objects) here -->
</fx:Declarations>
<s:ComboBox id="comboBox" creationComplete="comboBox_creationCompleteHandler(event)" labelField="countryName">
<s:AsyncListView list="{TypeUtility.convertToCollection(lookupCountryResult.lastResult.Tables.Country.Rows)}"/>
</s:ComboBox>
<s:ComboBox/>
</s:Application>
As you can see the combobox gets bound, the results are returned and displayed, however when I bind the second box to the other method Flash Builder does the most stupid thing ever:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
xmlns:uws_lookups="services.uws_lookups.*"
minWidth="955" minHeight="600">
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import com.adobe.serializers.utility.TypeUtility;
import mx.controls.Alert;
import mx.events.FlexEvent;
protected function comboBox_creationCompleteHandler(event:FlexEvent):void
lookupCountryResult.token = uws_lookups.lookupCountry();
protected function comboBox2_creationCompleteHandler(event:FlexEvent):void
lookupLanguageResult.token = uws_lookups.lookupLanguage();
]]>
</fx:Script>
<fx:Declarations>
<s:CallResponder id="lookupCountryResult"/>
<s:CallResponder id="lookupLanguageResult"/>
<uws_lookups:Uws_lookups id="uws_lookups" fault="Alert.show(event.fault.faultString + '\n' + event.fault.faultDetail)" showBusyCursor="true"/>
<!-- Place non-visual elements (e.g., services, value objects) here -->
</fx:Declarations>
<s:ComboBox id="comboBox" creationComplete="comboBox_creationCompleteHandler(event)" labelField="countryName">
<s:AsyncListView list="{TypeUtility.convertToCollection(lookupCountryResult.lastResult.Tables.Country.Rows)}"/>
</s:ComboBox>
<s:ComboBox id="comboBox2" creationComplete="comboBox2_creationCompleteHandler(event)" labelField="LanguageName">
<s:AsyncListView list="{TypeUtility.convertToCollection(lookupLanguageResult.lastResult.Tables.Country.Rows)}"/>
</s:ComboBox>
</s:Application>
Now I'm pretty sure that isnt what I asked it to do, so I manually change the code line to read correctly
<s:AsyncListView list="{TypeUtility.convertToCollection(lookupLanguageResult.lastResult.Tables.Language.Ro ws)}"/>
Which enables to second combobox to work, but the original one (countries) now displays [Object: Language_type]
I have debugged the application and both methods do actually return the correct data, FB is just choosing to do something stupid when I add the second call.
I have done the basics, deleted the project and started again, tried a different web service, tried different methods, but it looks like when I use more than one method it fails, so please tell me, what am I doing wrong because I know Flash Builder cannot be doing this by design.
I will post the service response in another post.
Thanks for any help you have!
Shaine

Ok, lets prove I'm not going mad. New Project, add webservice, which has 2 methods as before. Drag datagrid to stage and bind to data for lookup countries, the code generated is:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
xmlns:uws_lookups="services.uws_lookups.*"
minWidth="955" minHeight="600">
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import com.adobe.serializers.utility.TypeUtility;
import mx.controls.Alert;
import mx.events.FlexEvent;
protected function dataGrid_creationCompleteHandler(event:FlexEvent):void
lookupCountryResult.token = uws_lookups.lookupCountry();
]]>
</fx:Script>
<fx:Declarations>
<s:CallResponder id="lookupCountryResult"/>
<uws_lookups:Uws_lookups id="uws_lookups"
fault="Alert.show(event.fault.faultString + '\n' + event.fault.faultDetail)"
showBusyCursor="true"/>
<!-- Place non-visual elements (e.g., services, value objects) here -->
</fx:Declarations>
<s:DataGrid id="dataGrid" x="10" y="10" width="400" height="580"
creationComplete="dataGrid_creationCompleteHandler(event)" requestedRowCount="4">
<s:columns>
<s:ArrayList>
<s:GridColumn dataField="ID" headerText="ID"></s:GridColumn>
<s:GridColumn dataField="countryName" headerText="countryName"></s:GridColumn>
</s:ArrayList>
</s:columns>
<s:typicalItem>
<fx:Object countryName="countryName1" ID="ID1"></fx:Object>
</s:typicalItem>
<s:AsyncListView list="{TypeUtility.convertToCollection(lookupCountryResult.lastResult.Tables.Country.Rows)}"/>
</s:DataGrid>
</s:Application>
So. now te good bit, drag another datagrid to the stage and bind to the second method (languages), and guess what? it all goes horribly wrong, here is the complete code for that too:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"

Please please please please help, this is just slightly more than business critical, I have to justify the cost of this project, and so far, not having lot of fun with it.

• Updating web service WSDL in Flash Builder 4

I have a web service added to my FB4 project. It is all working nicely but I cannot work out how to refresh the web service wsdl. In flex builder 3 there was a "Manage web services" option that let you do it but there doesn't appear to be one in Flash Builder 4.
How do I update the generated code?

In FB 4.5, if you go to the Data Services view, and then right click on the data service (WSDL) you connected to, there is an option there to refresh the WSDL. It works very well for me.

• Flash connect with Java Web service

I would like to develop a Flash UI communicating with Database. And i create a web service (in Java) that asking database
to return a table.
So i don't know why the datagrid in UI databind with the web service but it can't display / mapping with the return data.
What databind type should i choose ? And what type or return value in the web service ? ( ResultSet / String Array, etc )

Resolved when I create a deployement profile explicitly.
The Webservice.deploy that gets created automatically when I create a web service was giving this issue.
Thanks

• Issue using Flash IDE with Mac OS and Windows Web Service using NTLM authentication?

I have an existing application that I developed on a Windows machine using CS5. It uses a local intranet web service written in .NET using NTLM authentication. The web service does multiple things such as read data from an SQL database, provide the user's username, and test for write/read access to a local company fileshare. When my company upgraded, I went to a Mac with Flash CC which is great. However, Mac's don't handle HTTP Authorization Challenge Blocks like Windows machines. In Safari, Chrome, etc. it will pop up a little username and password box and proceed on without issue. The issue is in Flash development. When running the exact same application in Flash testing all script access fails with HTTP Status 401 errors. I have searched the AS3 documentation, but the only thing built in to handle http challenge requests is in AIR not Flash. The server admin's and I have tried all method's of cross domain policy files and access changes with no luck at all. Does anyone have a solution to this issue?

• How do Flash Charts Work? Web Service?

I am guessing that Flash Charts work by sending data to a macromedia web service, which takes the labels, values, and other input and returns the xhtml necessary to render the chart in the ApEx page. Can someone confirm this?
Thanks,
Gregory

Gregory,
Actually Apex uses AnyChart for flash charts:
http://www.anychart.com/home/
The basic idea is correct though, Apex generates XML that AnyChart then uses to render the chart.
With Apex 4.0 we will get better looking charts via a newer version of AnyChart. However, if you don't want to wait, check this out:
