Flash Drive Speed Test?

Any one that has a new MBA, could any one try the AJA disk speed test application on it to see what the drive read and write speeds are?
Cheers

Running QuickBench's small random test, I average the 4K, 8K, 16K, 32K, 64K, 128K, 256K, 512K, and 1024K random reads and writes.
RESULTS for the 128G Flash Storage on the 11" MacBook Air:
Random Read Avg = 96 MB/Sec
Random Write Avg = 94 MB/Sec
RESULTS for the 256G Flash Storage on the 13" MacBook Air:
Random Read Avg = 96 MB/Sec
Random Write Avg = 93 MB/Sec
RESULTS for other drives in a MacBook Pro:
The Seagate Momentus 7200.4 notebook HDD = 17MB/s READ, 22MB/s WRITE
The OWC Mercury Extreme SSD = 149MB/s READ, 139MB/s WRITE
The Apple SSD = 100MB/s READ, 88MB/s WRITE.

  • 7200 vs 5400 Hard Drive Speed Tests?

Does anyone know of anywhere online where they do a speed test of 7200 vs 5400 laptop hard drives? I wonder how much (if any) of a difference there is. I will be doing graphics work but just wonder if there is much a performance increase between the 100GB 7200 drive and the 120GB 5400 drive. The extra 20GB of space would be nice to have, but if there is a big performance boost, I'd take the 7200 drive. The RAM on this laptop would be maxed out at 2GB as well.

I heard that the differences were pretty drastic. I would not hesitate, but then again it depends what you do with your computer. If it's just for iTunes and co.. might be better to get the extra GB's. If you're more into working, doing stuff as fast as possible, games and other heavy stuff go for the faster one.

  • Flash drive speed?

I used to back up about 3 GBs of data to a flash drive at the end of each day and it would take about 20 minutes with Mountain Lion.  Now the same amount of data on the same flash drive takes over an hour... Anyone know why that might be?  Anyone know how I might speed up this process?

If your Mac has USB3 support, then I would suggest getting a USB3 rated FlashDrive, which should be much faster transferring data.

  • Non-Flash Player Speed Test

I have two questions and would certainly appreciate any feedback from the community.
I live in one of the new Google Fiber rollout cities, and we just got the new service installed yesterday.  I would like to run a speed test to see what we are actually getting out of the service and experiment connecting to the service through hard wire ethernet connection, throught the wireness network provided through the Google Fiber Network Box, and also through our wireless home network utilizing our 802.11ac Apple Time Capsule (which I believe is a faster wireless connection than the Google Fiber Network Box which I've heard uses 802.11n).
However I had previously decided not to install Adobe Flash Player on our iMac and all of the speed test sites I've come across require flash player.
Is anyone aware of a speed test site that does not require flash player?
We do not run any anti-virus or anti-malware software on our system.  Is anyone aware of risks to using any speed test sites?  The sites test a file upload and download and I'm not sure what they put onto your machine (or your network) and where they put it.  I don't know if there is any risk of malicious activity from using a speed test site if you are not running anti-malware software.
    Thanks.

It's pretty simple to make sure you have only a legitimate Flash. Just get it from either of these two sites, nowhere else.
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html
And probably the most important thing is to be sure to have the latest, patched Flash installed. Even the legitimate versions are constantly being exploited for delivery of malware.
And, since you are concerned about browser security, I would highly recommend Firefox with the NoScript Add-on. It takes a bit of a learning curve and may sometimes be very frustrating, but it affords many kinds of  protection against Javascript browser exploits  (not the same as Java, which should be disabled completely.)

  • Flash drive + speed issue

My macbook is running slow as ever. it freezes every now and then.
The biggest problem is that it takes more than 5 minutes to detect a flash drive.
i am using 10.5.8 and i have 1gig RAM. i repaired all the disk permission but that did not slove the issue. i am fed up force shutting down my macbook. please help.
    thankyou.

    Try reinstalling OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
Also, add more RAM to your computer. 1 GB is not enough. You should use 2 GBs or more (if your model supports it.) Also be sure you maintain ample free space on your hard drive - 10 GBs or 15% of the hard drive's capacity whichever is greater.

  • Fake Flash Drives Threaten PCs and Networks Alike! Did You Test Yours?

    Hello Brothers;
I wanted to post this in the more mainstream Mac forums because it really does affect everyone who purchases flash drives or ANY memory product online.
In the past year, eBay and Amazon have been flooded with counterfeit flash drives that look identical to name brands. They look JUST LIKE the real deal. I know. Last month I unwarily bought a "Kingston" flash drive on eBay. Though PayPal grudgingly reimbursed me, this goes FAR beyond my being swindled.
Thousands of these fake drives have been purchased on eBay and Amazon as graduation and birthday gifts and party flavors and are landing in the unwary hands of those who jobs cannot tolerate data corrupted by one missing digit. When you walk past a hospital or construction site or industrial plant, someone there is plugging a flash drive into computers for precise medical and drug formula info or to feed instructions to heavy machinery or control a chemical plant or an aspect of our communications infrastructure. Maybe even computers aboard military aircraft and ships. This is an insidious and malignant issue that deserves FAR more attention by media and government than it has.
You can heads-up on this issue, find victim redemption assistance and test your flash drive at: http://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/
Please write to your local TV station and political representative about this pernicious blight! The person you eventually help might be you! Would you want the doctor or med tech managing your mother in a hospital to be carrying a fake flash?

Sounds like all of the troubleshooting regarding your home's wiring has been done. The noise on the phone line says what the problem is, and we should address the issues with voice FIRST before we start dealing with the DSL. Generally, once the phone is solved, the DSL will follow along.
Since you're receiving noise on the line, especially when the DSL is online you need to give Verizon a call during the time of the static from another line. Use a cell phone or a neighbor's line. When prompted, enter in your phone number and then navigate to Technical Support to the Telephone Repair section. When the agent comes on, tell them you are receiving Intermittent Static. They should proceed to perform a test called the MLT test, which will check your copper loop for any problems that may be developing such as shorts or unusual resistency (which can cause issues with DSL and phone). If the test picks up a problem, the agent should immediately be able to write up a trouble ticket with the details of the test for a technician to repair it. Just be aware, do NOT answer the phone or use your phone line while the test is ran. Stick to the alternate phone you are dialing support from. It requires the copper loop to be idle. DSL can be kept on with no problems. While in the call and when the tech visits (if they need to stop down), do NOT mention the DSL. Let them do the task of repairing the phone line. Once the problem is solved, you should see the DSL line stabalize, and if the statistics improve enough, the speed return and increase past the highest levels you've seen in a few days.
Your line should be short enough to have 3Mbps running on it. Just need to get the loop repaired

  • USB Flash Drive Transfer Speed Extremely Slow

    Aloha,
I have a 32GB Verbatim USB Flash Drive. The speed is 480Mb/sec. My mac is a MacPro running 10.5.8.
For some reason the transfer speeds from the computer to the flash drive is really slow. 2gb file takes 3 hours to transfer. I tested the flash drive on another MacPro and the transfer speeds were normal.
I have reformatted the flash drive (as FAT32) but it doesn't seem to help that much.
Anyone have this problem before and know whats up? This thing is basically unusable right now...

I just used Quickbench to test the speeds on my USB drive. About 38mbs Read, 32mbs Write. Pretty poor numbers. How that works out to your own I don't know, maybe you could do the math to find out.
    Good luck.

  • AHT Apple Hardware Test Download & Flash Drive

    Hi guys,
I really need to test the hardware on a 13" MBP. Full spec below.
The machine has Yosemite installed & I don't have the original install disc.
Does anyone know where to download the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) files & how to go about using it with a flash drive and a restart?
I've read this can be done but have only found dead links on old websites.
Holding down 'D' or 'Alt+D' isn't working, which I believe is due to the new operating system not having AHT.
    Thanks!
    Macbook Pro Spec:
    MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.7 13" Early 2011

"Wanted to download this as I'm not sure I can put my hands on the original 10.3 install disc. "
You will need to find it as the AHT is on the *machine specific* System Install DVD 1. If you lost your System DVDs, you can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

  • Flash Player only partially opens my ISP's speed test

I am having trouble with line speed and download speed. My ISP has directed me to their speed test, which has to be done several times and submitted before they will investigate.
I have tried to use the test several times on my networked pc and the flash player plugin will not complete the download of information.
I have reinstalled Adobe flash player several times with no change.
I have temporarily disabled my firewall with no change.
I can use the speed test on a netbook connected by wireless to the same network

The videos that DO work are most likely HTML5 which requires no plugin.
Spotlight search "Flash Player.plugin" and trash EVERYTHING in the results.
Go to: [user]/Library/Preferences (Hold the "Option" key when you click "Go" from the Finder menu to access this folder)
    Trash the com.macromedia.Flash Player.app.plist file.
Trash the Macromedia folder from there as well (the WHOLE folder).
    Go to: Mac HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Trash the Flash Player folder and the Flash Player Install Manager folder.
Go to: Mac HD/Library/ Internet Plugins.
    Trash the flashplayer.xpt file.
    Empty the trash.
Download the offline installer: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/mac /install_flash_player_11_osx.dmg  and run it.
If after all that, it still doesn't work, we'll need to look at other plugins you have that may be causing a conflict.
I have Safari, Firefox, Opera and Chrome, as well as a few "off brand" browsers and Flash Player works in all of them. Late 2012 Mini, Core15, 16Gb RAM.

  • Do you know of a good flash drive tester for OSX?

I know Disk Utility can verify pendrives, but it's not a deep test... it just seems to verify some partition tables or indices. I'd like to know if there's some tool capable of telling the status of cells in the flash drive.

  • Non-Flash based internet speed test sites for touch?

I'd like to test my internet speed directly from my touch. It seems like the speed test sites out there that I've found (like www.speakeasy.net/speedtest)use Flash which won't work with the touch. Does anyone know of any internet speed test sites that will work on the touch's Safari browser?

Great! Thanks for the info. The results seem to be lower than normal though. I could not get over 768k even with my 1.5mb cable connection here at home. I did find this site: http://i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html which seems to test more accurately.

  • For better speed, will a MacPro 2.8 ghz or airbook flash drive and 1.8 ghz?

For better speed, will a MacPro 2.8 ghz or airbook flash drive and 1.8 ghz?

It's going to depend on what you are doing with the machine.  If what you are doing is processor intensive, then higher clock speed would give more speed.  Assuming though, that the higher speed processor machine is going to have a spindle drive, then if the issue is one that is drive dependent (and a lot of things are), then the MBA will generally be faster.
If you have a machine you are replacing, I'd suggest looking at whether the applications you are now using tend to absorb lots of processor time (are you hitting 100% CPU usage regularly) or spend most of the time excercising your hard drive (drive activity is constant).  If the former, the Pro is likely the better option, while if the latter the MBA would likely do better.
Of course, if price is no object just get a Pro level machine with an SSD...

  • How Do You Test a Flash Drive for Errors Using OS X?

HI. In Windows there are Flash Drive tester that tests if there's something wrong with the Flash drive's chips. How do you test a flash drive for errors on OS X? I bought the HP v220w which is tiny for a 16GB and it's metal. The whole thing goes into the plug. Design wise, it is great, it's very elegant like a jewelry. Thanks in advance.
    Gbu.

Format it for OS X and run a surface scan on the partition. That should show any hardware problems that don't keep it from working altogether.

  • Possible to create system software disc on USB flash drive to start Apple Hardware Test on mid 2009 iMac running OS X 10.9

Is it possible to create a system software disc on a USB flash drive to start Apple Hardware Test on mid 2009 iMac running OS X 10.9?

Hopefully, those dvd's are the correct ones. If not, it's possible to download the AHT for many models from Apple, & either make a bootable drive, or replace the files in the hidden /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics folder.
see  Download and run Apple Hardware Test (AHT) from a USB drive.
There are additional download details in the comments  for some later models.
