Fonts in Unix

Hello,
I wrote a Java program in a computer with Windows, and now I need to port it to Unix. When I try to run it, I get an error that the font I use is not found. All the fonts I have are Courier with a variety of sizes and always bold. Does somebody know which fonts I can usually use in a computer with Unix, that are also common in Windows? I don't want to start installing fonts, but to use one of the standard ones.
Thanks.

Read the preamble on using fonts:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/java/awt/Font.html
"Courier" is a physical font and might not be available everywhere. If you want playform-independence, you should use fonts like "Serif, SansSerif, Monospaced, Dialog, and DialogInput".

  • Fonts problems (unix executable file)

    Hi,
    I've a mac os x 10.4.11(tiger) G5 and a new mac os x 10.5.2(leopard)Imac both connected on a server.
    I've many differents fonts on the server. On the G5, I can take all the fonts on the server, put them on my desktop and they will keep their extensions. On the Imac, when i do the same, only the *.ttf et *.otf are recognized, and all the others (font suitcase, postscript type 1 outline font, etc...) are known as unix executable file (0 ko). So, i've to go on my G5, create a zip file of the fonts, open my zip on my desktop's Imac (not on my server, because same problem) and then I've all my fonts with the right extension.
    My font software is (on my both mac) is Linotype FontExplorer X Version 1.2.3.
    What I've to do, to proceed in the same way on my Imac as on my G5, and not create a zip?
    Thanks

    I knew this sounded familiar. Mark Douma posted this on a very similar thread a while back.<hr>Notice the "__MACOSX" folder in the expanded archive? That's evidence that the original archive was created using the built-in "Create Archive" function of the Finder, but that the archive on your end was expanded using Stuffit Expander 8.0.1 or earlier.
    ZIP files don't normally support resource forks, so when you create a zip file of fonts, the program needs to some method of preserving this information. In Stuffit Expander versions 8.0.1 and earlier, it used its own method to preserve this information (before creating the final zip file, it would first encode each included file as a MacBinary (.bin) file).
    Unfortunately, the built-in "Create Archive" feature of the Finder (BomArchiveHelper.app, actually) uses a different method, one which you're seeing evidence in the "__MACOSX" folder in the images shown. Inside that folder are the "other halves" of the files you want to use.
    There are two possible solutions:
    1) Instead of using Stuffit Expander to expand the .zip files, use the built-in feature of OS X. To do this, select a .zip file in the Finder, and choose Command-i to open a Get Info window. In the Open With section, make sure that "BomArchiveHelper.app" (Tiger and earlier) or "Archive Utility.app" (Leopard) is set to open the archives. If it isn't, click the pop-up menu, choose Other, and navigate to the /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder and choose the appropriate application for your version of OS X. Then click the Change All button to apply this to all .zip files. Then locate the original .zip and expand it once again.
    2) Update your version of Stuffit Expander to version 8.0.2 or later. Allume changed the method it used to preserve information in zip files to match that of the Finder's method in Expander 8.0.2 and later. After updating, locate the original .zip file and expand it once again.
    There may also be an advanced way of salvaging these files shown toward the end of the following movie.
    The following movie shows the predicament (I haven't had a chance to add sound or text, but it should hopefully be self-explanatory).
    Notice the version of Stuffit Expander used to expand the archive is 8.0, which exhibits the same problematic behavior you're seeing:
    http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/images/zipFilesAndFonts.mov (~8.0 MB).
    Hope this helps.... <hr>
    Essentially, it's all in how the fonts were compressed or sent. Trying to send Mac fonts as direct attachments in an email will almost certainly ruin them. As Mark stated above, how they were zipped and then unzipped can also create empty fonts.

  • TTF Font for Unix Server?

    Hi,
    Does all TTF fonts works in Unix environment for the Font Subseting of Oracle PDF Reports?
    Thanks.

    Absolutely. It's just that you'd probably using a different font (Type1 font) for formatting your report. However, you can still subset a TTF. Ensure that you have an appropriate entry in uifont.ali plus the .TTF file's path is added to REPORTS_PATH.
    With latest Solaris version you may also install TTF and use it in your applications.

  • Exact Match of Windows Fonts on Unix Mid-Tier for PDF, AFM License

    Having read the many postings and Metalink articles on this issue is it sounds like I need only the AFM files on the Unix side for Oracle Reports to accurately render the real-estate on the report (for PDF) and that the actual report/fonts will be rendered on the (Windows) client side. My question is: Does it violate the license of Microsoft fonts to generate the AFM files and deploy them on the Unix mid-tier since these are only the "metric files"? If not, has anybody actually purchased the licenses to put, say the Microsoft Office font set, on a Unix Oracle Reports box? Any problems or issues if you did?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the response Melissa
    Why did you abandon the installation on windows then?
    Could you get every component working on windows prior to moving over to Linux?
    If you had everything working on Windows could you please tell me what setup you had i.e. what operating system, how much RAM etc.
    I know you kindly gave your number so I could call you about this but I'll have to check with my boss before calling as I notice you are calling from the US.
    We are only a very small oracle software development firm (in the UK) looking to add Collaboration Suite to our Portfolio.
    Thanks again

  • Files (fonts) appear as Unix files when viewing on an SMB share

    We have a UNIX server running Linux which our Mac users are connecting via SMB.  We moved our company fonts to this server from an OSX Server.  All of our machines are running 10.6.6 or later.  Very intermittantly without any rhyne or reason some users when they mount the Font share, the Fonts show up as Unix files rather than the Fonts.  On my machine (10.7) they all appear normally.  Now I know that SMB was revamped in Lion so this may be the reason I can see them no problem.  But the 10.6 machines, any suggestions on fixing this?

    Any solution on this issue? I have nearly the same exact issue in my environment, but is reversed.
    The problem we have is when saving files to the server from the Snow Leopard machine, the older Tiger machines see the fonts as unix executable files. The snow leopard machine sees the files fine and can open everything with no problem.
    This only happens when saving to a SMB server, as I can save the files from Snow Leopard to a flash drive and open on Tiger with no problems. Additionaly files saved from Tiger to the server are perfectly fine when accessing from Tiger or Snow Leopard.
    We're running Windows 2008 Server and connecting via the macs using the SMB method. Also duplicated the issue on a Windows 2003 Server.

  • Font Problem in Unix

    We have a report running in unix which uses Times New Roman font and has been running correctly, but for the last few days the output is coming strange and when we check the PDF file we found that it is using Helvetica Font instead of times in the output.
    We have checked the uifont.ali and nothing has changed in that. Is there any other file/setting in unix which will affect the font in reports.
    Many Thanks,
    Bibin

    We also have a similar problem with the fonts in Unix Vs Windows. What we have is that any string (char/varchar field in rdf) wraps differently in Unix than in Windows. When using the rdf builder locally, we see that the field is properly wrapped around and shown in multiple lines (when using fixed width but expandable vertically) but when run against the reports server (running on UNIX), the field, though wraps, doesn't wrap the same as in Windows, sometimes overlapping on the adjacent field. Have you seen this kind of problem on your side? We are using Reports 6i with Oracle 9i database.

  • CR4E 2.0 font issue on unix/aix

    I have designed my report on windows using courier new font and is working good. I also checked the font properties of the output pdf and is courier new(embedded subset). But when I deploy the same ear file on WAS6.1 on AIX it is using different font and the output pdf properties shows the font as LucidaSansTypewritterRegular(embedded subset) and some of the characters ()) are displayed as ? and also get "Cannot extract the embedded font AAAAA:LucidaSansTypewritterRegular, some characters may not display or print properly" error message when I open it in Adobe reader 9.1.
    How did it pick the LucidaSansTypewritterRegular font on unix if the template specifies Courier New?
    Can I copy the same font file from my windows machine to jre/fonts folder of WAS61 on AIX? Are there any compatibilty or licensing issues?
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

    Try to copy windows fonts to WAS JVM fonts folder (something like: opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/java/jre/lib/fonts).

  • Using OCRB Fonts (Reports 6.x/Unix/Apps)

    Problem printing OCRB Fonts :
    I am trying to print OCRB fonts in reports thru Unix,but I am not getting the desired output. Following are the steps I have performed as mentioned in a few of the metalink solutions, that I searched :
    A. Install OCRB fonts in Windows NT
    I installed the ocrb fonts in the local machine. In

    and the other 2 text with Arial Bold text
    C. Install the OCRB fonts in UNIX (AFM, PPD, uiprint.txt,
    unifont.ali)
    1. AFM directory
    Added file --> IDAutomationOCRb
    Changed the following statements :
    FullName IDAutomationOCRb
    FontName IDAutomationOCRb
    FamilyName IDAutomationOCRb

    Ok, I managed to get my dpi at 140 using this method:
    startx -- -dpi 140
    $ xdpyinfo | grep -B1 dot
    dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (348x195 millimeters)
    resolution: 140x141 dots per inch
    I still have the same font problem. Everything is the same. So it's not a dpi problem, back at the beginning.
    So, any idea were it could come from?
    EDIT: I think this is actually only due to Spotify. Spotify for Linux doesn't scale its fonts correctly, there's nothing to do about it.
    I thought it was general to qt applications, but it seems that others examples I've seen, like KeepassX, show the same way on Windows. So it's really an application setting, it doesn't have to do with my computer.

    Dear All,
    I have developed a report in 6i, and selected the font 3of9.ttf in Report Builder, which is a Barcode type font. but when i register the report as concurrent program and run the report concurrent program it is not showing me the field value in barcode format.
    Then i tried to ftp the font to unix server at location "$OA_JRE_TOP/jre/lib/fonts/3of9000.ttf" also created the xdo.cfg file at "$OA_JRE_TOP/lib" folder.
    But still i am not getting the expected result.
    Can anyone help me out to resolve this issue?
    Thanks & Regards,

    You can't just copy a Windows font to Unix. You need specific Unix installation steps. That I know, for the rest I am unfamiliar with Unix fonts.
    Some info can be found here:
    http://www.idautomation.com/kb/unix-finst.html
    For specific problems with E-Business Suite, ask that in the EBS forum.

  • Installing Adobe Type 1 Fonts on Solaris

    We want to install ocra fonts on a workstation running Solaris 10. Currently the fonts are installed in a Solaris 8 server in:
    /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
    On the workstation, we ftp'd the files from the server to /tmp on the workstation. We ran /usr/dt/bin/sdtfontadm and tried to use it to install the fonts. When you select install, 'Go To' /tmp and click 'Choose,'
    we get a segmentation core dump. We have called this into Sun as a separate issue.
    So we tried the manual way as described in IDAutomation.com (Installing Fonts on UNIX for Oracle Reports) and Oracle (Doc ID: 171464.1)
    Both are pretty much the same. The following are the instructions:
    1) copy ocra.pfa to /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/outline
    2) chown root:bin; chmod 644
    3) Create a link of the file to /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
    4) Edit fonts.scale and add 1 to the number on top of the file.
    5) add the following line:
    ocra-pfa -adobe-ocra-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
    6) Run: /usr/openwin/bin/mkfontdir
    7) Run: /usr/openwin/bin/xset fp rehash
    8) Verify the font installation using /usr/dt/bin/sdtfontadm
    When we run step 8, the font is there but the example tesxt is not OCR but courier.
    We tried reformatting the workstation (due to the core dump) and setting it up to default to en_iso8859-1.
    Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks!
    Frank

    Windows Type 1 fonts each consist of two files, a .pfb file containing the font itself and a .pfm file containing extended font metrics used for formatting text on the host computer. If you don't have both files for a particular font, the font is uninstallable and unusable. To install a Type 1 font on a Windows system, the .pfb and .pfm for the font should be in the same directory. Right click on the font and click on Install or Install as shortcut. Install copies the two files to the \Windows\Fonts directory and subsequently uses the font from that location. Install as shortcut uses the font from the location the files are currently located in with the caveat that you must keep those files in that location or else the fonts will no longer be accessible.
    If you actually attempted to install Adobe Type Manager on 32-bit Windows 7 (or later) system, you may have destroyed your system's ability to properly install and use Type 1 fonts at all. If this has happened, you may need to reinstall Windows! (If I recall correctly, the installer for ATM refuses to run at all on Windows 64-bit versions, sparing you the destruction of your Type 1 rendering!)

  • Linux application fonts

    Reposted from erroneous post on Labwindows/CVI - sorry
    I am having the problem of different font behaviour when transferring applications from windows to linux.  After trying various things without much success I am left with some questions:-
    1      The help files in LV 8.2 say that the default font in linux for application, system and dialog is helvetica.  If this is not installed is there any way of finding which font has been chosen by Labview?
    2      The 'Tools->Options->Fonts' menu gives a list of fonts that have little relation to the fonts actually installed on the PC, where does this come from?
    3      I have tried defining fonts in the .labviewrc file using the "labview.appFont:" parameter.  Is this supposed to become the default font overriding what is selected by labview as in 1?  It apparently has no effect in my application.
    I would be grateful for any information

    Hi jbroughton,
    I hope your well today.
    As promised I have had a look into your questions:
    1) Regarding what happens if labVIEW can't find the default?
    A) LabVIEW will still indicate the original font in the font ring.
    However, since the font is not available on the system, LabVIEW will
    actually use the Application Font.
    What Happens if LabVIEW Cannot Find a Particular Font for a VI?

    2) More info on fonts in labVIEW (is in a KB, but link is broken so...)
    <><><><>
    In terms of fonts, LabVIEW has three default fonts that it uses:
    Application, System, and Dialog fonts. The following is a breakdown of
    where these default fonts are used and how they map to the fonts on
    various operating systems:
    Application Font:
    LabVIEW default font used in Controls/Functions palettes and new controls.
    (Windows) The U.S. version of Windows usually uses Arial. The size
    depends on the settings of the video driver, because you can frequently
    set up higher resolution video drivers to use Large Fonts or Small
    Fonts.
    - (Macintosh) LabVIEW uses the same font used in the
    Finder for file names for the Application font, which on the U.S.
    Macintosh system is Geneva.
    - (UNIX) LabVIEW uses Helvetica by default.
    System Font
    LabVIEW font for menus.
    - (Windows) Windows uses Helvetica, with the size dependent upon the video driver.
    - (Macintosh) Thus, LabVIEW normally uses Chicago.
    - (UNIX) LabVIEW normally uses Helvetica for this font.
    Dialog Font
    LabVIEW font for text in dialog boxes.
    - (Windows) This font is a bold version of the Application font.
    - (Macintosh) This font is the same as the System font.
    - (UNIX) On HP-UX, this font is the same as the System font. LabVIEW normally uses Helvetica for this font.

  • Cfdocument font problem

    Hi all,
    I used cfdocument to create a pdf. Anfortunately the font

    fontembed (property of cfdocument) is set to yes. The strange thing
    is the font shows when a pdf is created via a report (.cfr).
    When I test the file on my localmachine it works fine, but on
    the server it doesnt work. My local machine runs om Windows, the
    server runs on Unix. Both machines are running Coldfusion MX 7. Am
    I doing something wrong?
    Thanx already for your answer!

    Thank you for your answer and sorry for replying this late.
    We use the IKEA Sans font family. This is the corporate font
    (truetype). Yes I do mean that the cfreport generates PDF with the
    correct font on Unix box but cfdocument does not. Below you will
    find a short example:
    <cfdocument format="pdf" orientation="landscape"
    pagetype="A4" fontembed="yes">
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0
    Transitional//EN" "
    http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="
    http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
    charset=iso-8859-1" />
    <title>Pdf test</title>
    <style type="text/css">
    BODY, TD {
    font-family: "IKEA Sans", Arial;
    font-size: 25px;
    </style>
    </head>
    <body>
    Hello world!! Wel iets met een a-tje erin.
    </body>
    </html>
    </cfdocument>

    for your time already!
