Footnotes in Tables?!

I am an academic and need to use footnotes not only in the body of my documents, but also in tables. I just started using iWork to avoid Office, but I cannot seem to be able to insert footnotes into tables in Pages. Is it really not possible? Say it isn't so, and I have to go back to MS Word.

As a matter of style only, I always use 'fake' footnotes in tables, even in Word, by using superscript text for the marker and putting the footnote at the bottom of the table. I also use letters for table footnotes. This distinguishes them from footnotes in the body and makes the table self-contained.
Just a thought.

  • Importing footnotes in tables from a Word document

    Hi everybody,
I am new here. Hoping to find an answer for a problem i am dealing with. It's about footnotes in tables from an imported Word document. I noticed there are several discussion about this topic, but couldn't find a satisfying answer. So...
Like a said i am importing a Word document in InDesign. This document is containing footnotes in text and in tables. In the Word document the numbering for the footnotes is for example, number 1-9 in text and 10 in table, 11-15 again in text and 16 in table. In others words, the footnotes both from text and tables are one serie of numbers. When i import this Word text in InDesign the numbering is changing. The numbering of the footnotes in tables starts with number 1. So in InDesign i have two separated series of footnotes. Each starting from number 1. And that 's a problem. I want them to apair as one serie of numbers, including the footnotes in tables. Is there a solution for this problem?
An other minor problem is that the footnotes in the tables appear at the end of the document and not as footnotes. Like I said before two separated series.
At the end i want to change, in the InDesign document, all the footnotes into endnotes. I know how to do that.
Is there a solution? Maybe changing something in Word? (I tried saving as RTF tekst, changing footnotes into endnotes in Word but it didn't help). Can GREP being of any use?
I hope you can be of any help. Already thanks.

Footnotes can only be inserted in the main text area between the margins on a Word Processing document.

  • Footnotes in tables! Please!

Can the coding/engineering geniuses at Adobe please find a way to enable footnotes in tables? Contrary to popular belief, there are still people using footnotes...

Yes, I would appreciate it too.

For example, an English lesson has body text, then displays two quotations side-by-side for comparison, then continues the body text. As the body text is changed, the side-by-side comparison needs to move. The side by side quotations need individual footnotes appearing below them, not at the bottom of the page. Work-arounds are done, but footnotes in tables in much better.

  • How to put footnotes in tables?

    Hi,
I noticed I can't put footnotes in table cells. Is there a workaround?
    Thanks!

Take a look at this: http://blogs.adobe.com/indesigndocs/2009/03/endnotes_in_indesign_cs4.html

  • Does RoboHelp 9 support creation of footnotes in tables (or anywhere)?

I've looked in the Help, in the forums, and in the product, and can't find any way to insert footnotes in a table.
    Thanks. Carol

Footnotes are not really a concept used in onlne help. Maybe use text popups or dropdown text?

  • Footnote in table?

    Hi there,
I think I'm on to a request for future features of Pages, but I'd like to know if any of you knows a work-around.
I'd like to add a footnote / endnote to some text, which is placed inside a table. But, the option is ghosted. Why is this? Is is so difficult for Pages to keep track of the reference, when the text is placed inside an object?
Let me know if you know a way around, or if I'm doing something wrong.
    thanks, Rense

    Rense—
Have you thought about the possibility of adding a cell to the table at the bottom, adding your footnote, and making that cell's outlines invisible? That would be one work-around. Or, were you looking for a way to add a footnote at the bottom of the page instead of the bottom of the table? If this is the case, you could always add a footnote corresponding to the table text within the regular text and format the footnote's symbol so that it's the same color as the background (or change its transparency). This version is a longer work-around but if you wanted your footnote at the foot of the page it's the only way I can see to do it.

  • Continued tables and footnotes | Why, oh why...

Why does a continued paragraph, or word get counted as the first
instance in the second text frame (as it should), but not footnotes or
tables. If you have a continued footnote or table in a text frame the
tables collection or footnotes collection will both be empty. This makes
it very difficult to determine (reliably) whether you have a table or
    footnote in a frame.
Tables can be inversely determined relatively easily by checking if
there are any lines in the frame (assuming there is no text besides).
Footnotes however, is *way* more complicated... :(

Here I am, nearly a year later with the same lament -- at least as far as footnotes are concerned.
They have a textColumns collection that is always empty.
    Oh growl.

  • I will pay, who creates a method for importing tables from MS word

I need a script or any other type of method, which will import the MSword document, which have tables and footnotes.
WIth "Place" option (with "SHift"), it only imports the first page of word document, and even that first page is degraded and some part of  footnotes are moved to the second page of Indesign.
    for example,see such document: http://d2.minus.com/1342790256/zDuntjI5q2iNIJqkk5UPJA/dbjwjsXzUbRmjD/sample.rtf
i will pay him, who will do that job (offer me your bid).
    my info:

    Hello!
    First of all:
Indesign does not support footnotes in tables. There are some tricks i use, for example making a "hidden footnote reference" somwhere in the page (just assign a 0.1pt size and fillcolor of "None") but it's just a ugly hack and if you have to reformat the tables you will have to rebuild all teh footnotes. move them around etc.
    Second:
If one of the cells in the table you are importing is larger (verticaly) than the page size the autoflow will stop. The table is imported in the story (check it out in the story editor) but indesign cannot display it. Enlage the frame until the cell fits (or make the cell smaller -decrease the text size?) and reflow the rest of the text.
    Third:
If you are working with large tables and especialy large cells be prepared to have numerous crashes. And i mean NUMEROUS!! Every time you try to change something in the table.
i am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but at the moment table and footnote support in indesign is crappy at best, and i don't think there's anyone besides the guys form Adobe that can do anything to help you.

  • Footnote numbering query

Hi I am working on InDesign CS3 (mac) I am setting a new book which has extracts from other journals and books that contain footnotes, and as the extracts are all from legal publications the footnotes need to be renumbered exactly as they are in their original state i.e. there could be three paragraphs from a law journal and the footnotes in those three paragraphs start numbering at 15 and end on 27, then the next extract which starts on the same page starts on 18 and ends on 23 for example my question is can this be done with automatic footnotes I know it would be fine if each extract started on a new page I could create a book and start renumbering each section but I can't seem to find a way to start renumbering from multiple starting numbers on one page?!!!!
I have a ten year old program called 3b2 which does do it so surely ID CS3 can?
    Any suggestions
    Thanks in advance :)

    Hi
Yes it cost us almost ten times what the CS3 package cost us! and they have now been bought by an American company called Arbortext and I think is slowly being phased out, it has served us well and has been the back bone of our company for many years but what with online publications becoming ever more popular and the function of being able to export back in to MSWord whilst keeping the automatic footnotes and styles ID CS3/4 is by far way ahead. But I am still impressed with 3b2 I like the fact you can get in to the guts of the coding and manipulate to great lengths to get your desired result, thanks so much for your reply I thought that would be the case in regards to my query, I have heard through the grape vine that the footnote options for CS4 have not changed one bit since CS3 and also you still can't have automatic footnotes within tables! Still, we can't have it all :)
    Thanks again

  • Notes within table cells

I made a large table where each cell contains a number indicating
    the level of a parameter.
Some of these cells would need an explanation. And I'd like to put this
explanation outside of the table so as to keep it filled with
numeric values. I thought that a note would be the perfect tool to make
    this kind of table explanation.
Hence I tried to insert a footnote within a cell,
but the menu stay as grey as deaf.
It doesn't even give me the smallest word of explanation about
    this error or inability.
I didn't find any help on how to insert a footnote within a table cell?
    Is it prohibited?
    Why?

Bad news, but clear and fast answer.
    I appreciate .
I'd appreciated to read this as quickly and clearly in the inline help.
Do you know if this banning of notes within tables
    is lifted with Pages'09?
    Otherwise, I'll submit a feedback.

  • Word 2007 & Acrobat 9: Macro to generate PDF

I'm trying to create a Word 2007 macro which does some checks on a document (for example, refreshes all fields and checks for broken x-refs by searching for the text "Error!") before PDFing it.
Does anyone know what Microsoft VBA will perform the same task performed by clicking the  Acrobat-->Create PDF option?
Also, if anyone know of any similar macros that perform error-checking on Word document, please let me know,
    Thanks,
    P.

Footnotes in tables were the problem with my doc as well.  I tried the option of saving the doc as a Word 2003 file, but it didn't help.  I chatted with Adobe Customer Service and was provided this fix:
In Word 2007, click on the Acrobat ribbon
In the "Create Adobe PDF" panel, click on "Preferences"
In the "Settings" tab, under "Application Settings," UNCHECK the box next to "Enable Accessibility and Reflow with tagged Adobe PDF"
After that, I was able to create the PDF, and the table of contents and external hyperlinks all worked.  The footnotes were no longer hyperlinked, but since they're on the same page as the items they're referencing, that's not really a problem.  Cheers,

  • Combine supported files... problem (Word 2007, Acrobat 9, Windows 7)

    Windows 7; Word 2007; Acrobat Pro 9
Print > Adobe PDF within Word produces pdf file that faithfully reproduces the Word file (that is, this process works as expected).
RClick context menu 'Combine supported files in Acrobat' produces output characterized by incorrect letter spacing and incorrect typeface (font) output among other issues.
Various possible resolutions have been tried with no success (PDFMaker option changes, output resolution (dpi) changes and so forth).
The same results are obtained when using the combine feature from within Acrobat Pro.
Thanks for any and all help.

  • Word 2007 - Acrobat : filename with periods (.)

Just a quick question : since we upgraded to Office 2007, one of my users complains that when he converts his Word documents to PDF (through the virtual printer in Word), the filename is automatically cut, it stops at the first period (.) which could be in the middle of the filename, which wasn't the case previously with Office 2003 (same Acrobat Pro 9.0 included in CS4).
Is there any way to change this behaviour ?

  • How to cope with "undefined is not an object" ?

I'm tiptoeing towards a solution, but stepped on a thumbtack:

(inserting JS code really has its quirks in this editor).

Thanks Klaus - now it works!
    To Rick.
The presented piece of code is part of a 're-furbishing' the FameMaker to EndNote 'connection.
In a first step I collect temporary citations (such as [Daube, 1969, #123] ) from text, footnotes and tables into an array. This part already works fine (I had to postpone further development for a year now...).
Then I write this data to a new document (which is created from the template - this is where the mentioned piece comes into play.
This file then is saved as rtf to be worked off by the bibliographic application EndNote (or Citavi in another case) to resolve the temporary citation into formatted citations and the bibliography.
After that the modified rtf is read in FM and the temp. citations in the FM-document/book are replaced by the formatted citations.
The user then copies the bibliography (as text only) into his appropriate chapter/section and formats it to his liking.
