For heaven's sake!

Hi there,
I've just changed my nano for this 80gb model today. It's brand new..sealed. Well, now I can notice that equalizer does not work. I can't notice any difference when it's on or off...I've tried all settings but the sound is the same!
In my nano I can hear the different settings very well. I've done a reset but it did not fix it. I just can't belive it's defective!
I'm a musician and I have good ears!
Any tips?

Yes, I'm sure it's not working. As I told before,I'm a musician and have very nice ears I could not notice any difference in ANY preset instead with my other nano.
Now, I discovered that the issue is due to the way I put musics onto my ipod. I mean: If I rip a CD via iTunes the equalizer works fine since is encoded to AAC ! When I changed my old mp3 files to AAC and downloaded to iPod equalizer worked ! I just think this ***** because I have no problems like that with my 2GB nano.
Maybe a firmware (I got the latest) issue ? Who knows ?
Are you sure it's not working? I ask this because
some of those options available to choose have some
very subtle differences in the sound. Why don't you
try something like the Bass Booster and see if you
can hear a difference. Or go from Bass Booster to
Bass Reducer and see if you can hear any difference.
I've also read in these forums that if you make some
sort of change in iTunes (equalizer wise) on a piece
of music that it will take precedence over the
equalizer settings that you may make on your iPod
(or maybe the other way around, not sure) in other
words, it will seem as though your equalizer on the
iPod is not working.

  • Please, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, provide music equalizer...

This is an issue regarding the 'Nokia Music' application. I just got my Windows 7.5 phone updated to Windows 7.8 at a Nokia Care center. But I realized that even now there is no option for equalizer in Nokia Music. This is highly disappointing. Since the Windows 7.8 update isn't officially out yet, is there any chance that when it is officially released, the Nokia Music application is updated to include an equalizer? Without equalizer, the music sounds pathetic. There have been loads of requests on the Nokia forums to include an equalizer in the Nokia Music application for Lumia phones since the time Lumia 800 was released. People higly anticipated an equalizer in the 7.8 update, but it was never included. This shows that Nokia isn't bothered about even very basic customer requirements such as an equalizer. An equalizer for music playback is a very basic feature which even 5 year old phones have. Even other vendors provide their own equalizer application for use on their Windows phones. Its not at all difficult to include an equalizer in your 'Nokia Music' app. I mainly use my phone for music playback, and the lack of an equalizer on my Lumia 800 is VERY VERY disappointing due to poor quality of music playback. I'm sorry to say this, but I will NEVER recommend a Windows based Nokia phone to anyone due to very poor music quality, which is a direct result of an equalizer not being included. I agree that you're including an equalizer for Windows Phone 8, but it doesn't mean you have to abandon your Windows 7 users who have been waiting for a simple feature such as an equalizer since more than 18 months. I have used EXCLUSIVELY Nokia products since 10 years because of the faith I had in Nokia. But I'm sorry to say that this Lumia 800 will surely be the last Nokia product I would have purchased. You have lost a long time and sincere customer. No wonder Nokia's sales and revenue have plummeted over the past year. If you people can't provide even a basic feature such as a music equalizer in your phones, people are not going to buy your products. And you are not at all bothered about the feedback which people have been giving since more than a year.
My sincere request - PLEASE, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, include an equalizer for Windows Phone 7.8 in your next update for the Nokia Music application. Or else, please recommend me any third party application or music player which supports equalizer. If this is not possible, at least provide some app for increasing the bass output. Don't say that I have poor quality headphones. I have high end headphones which produces excellent bass when connected to my PC or my old Nokia X6 phone. I don't mind paying for that application. This will surely restore my faith in Nokia as a brand. Please take this as constructive critisism.
    Thanks and regards

I do have the latest update. I realized that the bass is reproduced only for mp3 songs with very high bit rate of 320kbps or slightly lower.
And yeah, I do have excellent quality JBL headphones.
because it offers excellent music output even for 128kbps music files.
Actually for low frequency reproduction the bitrate is much less important then you seem to think. Also I would gladly bet you will not be able to tell which is the 128Kbps mp3 against a 320Kbps or even a CD track in a blind test. Quality of MP3s is not just the bitrate, it can vary greatly from one encoder to the next. Could you let us know which headphones you are using?  I would agree that audio quality of the included headphones is bad at best.

  • When will be get decent sharpening for heaven sake?

How many years has Lightroom been out now? And we still need to make a roundtrip to Photoshop for Photokit. It's almost 2010 and beyond ludicrous at this point (for this industry in general actually). Cut it out with the extra dingbats and get to the meat of the matter for heaven sakes. I would pay a grand for the package just for the time (money) savings.
P.S. at least have the courtesy to have a "disable sharpening" switch when you edit (export) to Photoshop (just sharpening)

J Ituarte, you didn't make clear which version of Lightroom you were griping about ineffective Sharpening in, or whether you were unhappy with image or print sharpening. You do need LR 2.x to get good image sharpening.
And you may already know all this that follows, JI, but a lot of people who think sharpening in LR2 is still ineffective are unaware of this, so just to be clear, to see the effects onscreen of adjustments to image Sharpening (or Noise Reduction or Chromatic Aberration) in the Develop module, you **must** first zoom the image in, by either clicking in the image so that it zooms, or clicking the small triangle with the exclamation point in the upper left corner of the Detail box. If you move the sliders in the Detail box without making that triangle go away by zooming, nothing seems to happen. The adjustments are still being made, but you can't see them onscreen, which makes slider movement there a crapshoot. The level of zoom is 2:1 by default, but can be set higher in Library module to the right of where it says Navigator in the upper left.
Also, some people don't know that to use Masking under Develop>Detail>Sharpening, you should hold down the Alt button on a PC while moving the Masking slider on a **zoomed in** image. What appears in white as you do this is what's being sharpened. So if you want the edges in a photo sharpened but not areas that should appear smooth, hold down Alt on a zoomed-in image and move the Masking slider so that only the details you want sharpened appear in white.

I'm having a wee posting spree today after lacking the inclination to respond to the same old threads for the last few days.    But I do love it when people get all in a tizzy complaining about stuff that is right under their nose (so to speak).   So I guess my criteria for responding is often based as much on how big a smile it puts on my face, as to how much I am helping the OP.   Unfortunately that irreverent approach gets me into trouble at times, and one of the moderators deleted one of my illustrated replies just a few days ago.  It took me a few minutes to work out why it had been deleted.  The subtext was 'risking one eye', and I eventually realized that the implied 'risk' could definitely be seen as offensive to some people.

  • For God's Sake, How Do I Reduce The Endless Lag???

I'm aware that the Classic uses disk medium and not, yknow, flash storage. Prior to my 120GB Classic, I used a 40GB 3rd Gen from 2003 'til now.
For a long time I suffered with a Powerbook with a smaller hard drive than my 120GB iPod, so I was forced to keep all my music on the iPod. I accepted the lag then.
But now I have a Mac capable of anything, and am ready to start removing music off my iPod. But in my googling, it seems like a lot of people say that removing things off your iPod and cutting down on space usage hasn't helped the lag for them at all.
It has 103GB full, music only, no video, and unless I fix the lag, it will probably be the death of me, because trying to change songs in a car is an aggravating and near-suicidal endeavor, because of how rarely the scrollwheel deems to respond, or clicking too many menus ahead because I've waited a while and come to the assumption that my previous click didn't register.
I'm willing to cut back large amounts of gigs, I just want to know if it will noticeably help.

Ignore the self-righteous replies ... now how about some help?
Is your Classic's firmware up to date? There have been some improvements to responsiveness compared to initial releases.
Is your Classic's click wheel covered by a skin? I had to surgically remove the thin silicone skin over the wheel and got much better response.
Do you use a lot of smart playlists, especially ones that depend on the contents of other playlists? That can bog things down, especially if you have a lot (say, 75 or more). I did get some improvement with the last firmware release, but the key seems to be to limit your use of multi-cascaded playlists.

  • For God's Sake Skype

So, I changed my password because Skype was being weird and not letting me sign in. I chose a very similar password as a temporary one,  but now I keep getting "Your password can be stronger,  we believe in you! " every time I try to change it back to the original one. This makes no sense and annoys the hell out of me.

thanks for the answer, but in the meanwhile (and windows mobile 10 is not for tomorrow!), Skype is almost useless. I edit a contact number in people's hub, and expect to see the change in Skype so that I can use skype to call. But no, skype app still shows the old number. It used to be better, so I suppose a severe bug behind!Or what do I do wrong? EDIT: got it: need to refresh my hotmail inbox in WP to force a sync of people's hub.And then to close completly Skype, wait a few secon and sign in again. It see now the edited number in Skype. Should be much smoother.I now change the settings of my microsoft account on Windows Phone from "based to my usage" to "as items arrives", it might help...

  • For God's sake Nokia...PLEASE release the N950!!

This sexy piece of hardware is the right one to replace the Maemo 5 giant, our beloved N900.
    I know it,
I know you guys know it as well.
I'm looking at it and say "holy **bleep**, this device is thinking!"
N900/N950 enthusiasts, back me up here!

I now work with someone who worked with/under the guy who killed touch screen symbian 5 years ago.. He said no one needed a touch screen device, it was all about phones with buttons..
he then left and worked for palm (a company focused on touch screen technology almost completely) and killed that too with other stupid ideas..
I can't repeat the words I used to describe that man..
Think where we'd be if Nokia had progressed Series90. It is all about touch screens now..
    idiot..
I wonder if they might re-release the N950 next year after the launch of the N9.. Though I also understand the N9 might not be launched in the USA or UK..
I love the fact dippy in charge "leaked" the WP7 recently..
Announce WP7 phone this year... world says "meh"
Announce the N9.. world says "what the hell, that looks awesome"
    quick better "leak" a WP7
Apparently it's very similar in hardware / design to the N9.. makes you wonder how similar they'll actually be.. maybe it's just an os difference! Interesting thought though.. if the WP7 hardware could be MeeGo compatible..
That would be fairly revolutionary.. one phone hardware, pick an OS!! But it doesn't work well with the deal Nokia made with MS..
Either way, the N950 kind of represents the potential end of the Maemo hacker platform.. The N9, whilst truely awesome, is a finished product.. the N950 with its rough edges appeals to many.. If they made 100,000 units, they'd sell them in a month for sure.. even if they came without warranty / support... the N900 community is used to that!!!

  • FOR CHRIST'S SAKE WILL SOMEONE ON HERE TELL ME.

Jesus there are a million people who apparently know what the hell
they are doing with their computers.
Obviously the XFI is working for some systems. I am trying to find out
    if mine will be one.
Would someone PLEASE tell me if the various software (drivers, control panels, etc.) will
    load in:
    Windows XP Professional Service Pack
I would like to buy the Fatality model soon. I will not use Service Pack 2.
Thanks to anyone who will help me out here.

Im not here to get a rateing. I am here just for this simple question. It specifically
says SP2 on the driver page you just directed me to but that does not necessarily mean it will not work in SP.
I know. I am a Computer and Business Services provider. My job resides mostly in troubleshooting software on machines used in business and home users.
The statement "Windows XP Service Pack 2" has become literally a cut and paste statement at this point. It may not actually be required to function properly.
Again there has got to be a gamer on this forum who has loaded the card into a system with just Service Pack .

  • WebDB 2.2/RedHat 6.1. For God's sake why doesn't Oracle release some documentation??

Someone please tell me how to get past the
"Enter your Oracle database SYS user password and a TNS names alias" page. My password doesn't show up as ****'s or spaces. Do I have termcap problem here? I've tried different term types and none of the obvious ones help.
I enter change_on_install for the password and "oracle" (my SID) for the TNSNAMES alias. But I always get a "You entered an incorrect system password or an incorrect TNS names alias" error message. Which is it? Why doesn't it just say "Oracle doesn't work". Or "What you entered doesn't compute". Or "You f%$^ing dumb ass, don't you f$%^ing know anything about Oracle, you should have entered something else". These messages are equally as useful as the current response. Do I need to create a new TNS names alias? If so why? And where is the documentation on this?
I'm guessing that because Oracle released Webdb on Linux it does actually work and that someone, somewhere got it to work. Otherwise Oracle is no better than Microsucks in their support effort ("Well it works on my system, you must be doing something wrong").
Thanks for any help. I'd really like to use WebDB but if I have to spend any more than 2 days just to get it installed I might as well revert to Winblows NT and self installing, self configuring ZIP files or jump of the Brooklyn bridge and I'd rather do the later.
    Bren.

I am a Product Manager for WebDB and I am concerned that you are having such a problematic experience.
Below I have pasted an installation note that is available on MetaLink, this should walk you through the process.
The reason your TNS connection is failing is because WebDB does not know where to connect to. WebDB uses 8.0.5 binaries and therefore cannot use the tnsnames.ora file in the 8i Oracle home. To get it to work you need to do one of two things, either copy the tnsnames.ora file from your 8i home to the new WebDB home you're about to create. Or create yourself an environment variable called TNS_ADMIN that points to [8i home/network/admin]
Don't worry about not seeing asterisks as we don't display any, this is a 'feature' of the character based installer that we use.
With WebDB 3.0 we will not have this problem as we are using 8i binaries and libraries and we will install using the Oracle Universal Installer, not a character mode one.
    Hope this helps.
    PURPOSE
This document provides detailed installation notes for WebDB 2.2.0.0.4. It is
focused on installing WebDB for an 8.1.5 (8i) database. Since WebDB is based
off of the 8.0.5 binary and library files, it must be installed in a separate
    ORACLE_HOME than 8.1.5.
    SCOPE & APPLICATION
This document is intended to guide you through every step of the WebDB
installation process against 8i to prevent the most common issues.
    BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Create a new directory for the new WebDB ORACLE_HOME separate from the 8.1.5
    database ORACLE_HOME.
    i.e. /u01/app/oracle/product/webdb/
You must ensure that all of the appropriate environment variables are set before
beginning the installation process. Unset any existing ORACLE environment
settings and only set the following:
ORACLE_HOME-->point this to the WebDB home
    i.e. setenv ORACLE_HOME /u01/app/oracle/product/webdb/
LD_LIBRARY_PATH-->point this to the $ORACLE_HOME/lib where $ORACLE_HOME is the
    WebDB home
    i.e. setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $ORACLE_HOME/lib/
SHLIB_PATH-->point this to the $ORACLE_HOME/lib as well where $ORACLE_HOME is the
    WebDB home
    i.e. setenv SHLIB_PATH $ORACLE_HOME/lib/
LIBPATH (for AIX ONLY)-->point this to the $ORACLE_HOME/lib as well where $ORACLE_HOME is the
    WebDB home
    i.e. setenv LIBPATH $ORACLE_HOME/lib/
PATH-->append the following $ORACLE_HOME/bin/ where $ORACLE_HOME is the
    WebDB home
    i.e. setenv PATH $ORACLE_HOME/bin/:$PATH
TNS_ADMIN-->point this to the database home/network/admin directory.
    i.e. setenv TNS_ADMIN /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/network/admin
WV_GATEWAY_CFG-->point this to the $ORACLE_HOME/listener/cfg/wdbsvr.app where
    $ORACLE_HOME is the WebDB home
    i.e. setenv WV_GATEWAY_CFG $ORACLE_HOME/listener/cfg/wdbsvr.app
    BEGIN THE INSTALLATION
From the unix prompt, cd to the staging area for your WebDB Media and go to the
    orainst director.
    i.e. cd /SD_CDROM/orainst/
Run the orainst for the Oracle Installer to begin.
    i.e. ./orainst
1.)'Oracle WebDB 2.1 Installation Requirements' Select OK.
    2.)'Environment Variable'
ORACLE_BASE - this should be set already
    i.e. /u01/app/oracle/
ORACLE_HOME - this should be set to the WeBDB home already
    i.e. /u01/app/oracle/product/webdb/
    Select OK.
    3.)'Relink All Executables?' Select NO.
4.)'Software Asset Manager' - select Oracle WebDB 2.2.0.0.4 and Oracle WebDB
    Listener 2.2.0.0.4. Select INSTALL.

Hostname --> provide the fully qualified host.domain as registered with DNS
    i.e. iprodhp2.us.oracle.com
Data Access --> You can name your database access descriptor anything you
would like but it is best if you take the default which is 'WebDB'
WebDB Schema --> This is the schema that all WebDB packages will be installed
under. It is recommended that you again take the default which is 'WEBDB'
Listener Port -- > Ensure that you choose a port that is not already in use.
Port 80 is the default http port. This port number can always be changed
later when you start the WebDB listener.
    Select OK.
6.)'Choose the Database' - Select Oracle 8i and Select OK.
7.)Please provide the appropriate sys password and the TNSNAMES alias used to
    connect to the 8.1.5 database.
8.)'WEBDB' --> Select the tablespaces you would like to install into.
    Installation = WEBDB
    Default = <USERS>
    Temporary = <TEMP>
    Document = <USERS>
    Select OK.
9.)WebDB initial password is webdb --> Select OK.
10.)'Choose Language' --> English is automatically installed but you may choose
    any additional languages. Select OK.
11.)Installation of the WebDB schema may take a while. You may think your
installer is hanging but in fact it is just installing a lot of information.
Depending on your machine's resources, the average time to complete this
task is usually around 45 minutes to 1 hour.
12.)'WebDB Install Complete' --> Select OK.
13.)It will then install support files.
    14.)'WebDB Listener Successfull' Select OK.
    15.)Exit Software Asset Manager
Go to the unix prompt to start the listener:
wdbstart host.domain port&WHERE host.domain is the fully qualified host and domain name with DNS
AND port is the http port you would like the listener to start on
    i.e. wdbstart iprodhp2.us.oracle.com 22004&
    CONFIGURING THE LISTENER
    Go the following URL: http://host.domain:port/admin_/gateway.htm
WHERE host.domain is the fully qualified host and domain name with DNS
AND port is the http port you started the listener on
    i.e. http://iprodhp2.us.oracle.com:22004/admin_/gateway.htm
Verify that your connect string is correct on the gateway.htm page. This should
be the alias registered in your TNSNAMES.ORA file. Then click Apply. It is
not neccessary to restart the listener after you make the change.
    ACCESSING THE WEBDB HOME PAGE
Go to the following URL: http://host.domain:port/

  • For god's sake when is the ipad going to be compatible with adobe fash!?

I am simply repeating my question. Can it ever be answered? Will the great mystery of the world be solved?

Probably never as Apple don't want it (http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/) and Adobe have never been able to make a version of flash player that works on iOS (even when Apple helped them for a couple of years or so).
If you want to access flash-based content then browser apps such as Skyfire, iSwifter, Puffin and Photon 'work' on some sites, but judging by their reviews not all sites. Also some websites, especially news sites, have their own apps in the App Store and there is the built-in YouTube app.

  • FOR GOD'S SAKE WOULD SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME!!!!!!

How does ANYONE record their guitar through ios Garageband considering all the latency???  I'm trying to just demo stuff using the Apogee Jam with the latest garageband using smart drums and it WILL NOT line up.  There is latency.  How is ANYONE using this??  I'm INCREDIBLY frustrated with this.

Are you monitoring through the internal speaker, the headphone jack, or something plugged into the dock connector?
I found that the latency on the head phone jack is really high compared to the internal speaker (which is good latency wise, bad frequency response wise). I don't have a dock based output to check.

  • Searching for a genuine fix; last chance before I ...

    The Rafiner BT Chronicles
    ACT I
I moved into my house in August 2011.  After doing research, I decided to go with BT for phone/broadband as it seemed like the best all around deal for my needs.  There are 5 in my family, all on their iphones/ipads/iphones/pc's/macs.  From the beginning, I've had multiple issues (crackling lines, internet connection dropping, and speeds that would make dial-up look like fibre-optic speed).  I consider myself quite knowledgeable about technology, and often times finding myself fixing other friends/familiy/workmates computers/broadband problems.
Since being with BT, I would estimate I've contacted them 4-5 times prior to this latest problem in regard to slow connection speeds/crackling lines, and other than on one occasion problem was quickly resolved and my meager speed was back, usually 1-2mbps on an outstanding day, though typically 400-800 kbps avg I would guess.  I've always thought that well… I live in an area a good 3000 meters from the exchange, and have learned to 'adapt' with the 400-800kbps.
However, over the past six months, the crackling on the phone has progressively worsened, as has dropped internet connections and dipping speeds (especially last month).  Early this week, a phone call on my landline was impossible as it sounded like plain static with the caller mumbling through it.  So, as much as I didn't want to call India or where-ever the customer service is located, I did.... and so my adventure begins.... settle yourself in your chair… buckle up... get a cuppa… and put your feet up.
Call one - probably 25 or 26 June.  I spoke to someone whom I could barely understand and tried all the basics (which I explained I had already done), but entertained her anyway jumping through the hoops of making sure everything is plugged in and such.  Lines were tested and the sort... golden.  After a good 45 minutes of 'troubleshooting', I was told an engineer would need to come out, and I should be prepared to pay £100 as the problem was likely my house wiring.  This was obviously upsetting and I argued I shouldn't have to pay a penny considering I've been paying for 'broadband' that acts like dial-up for just about a year now.  Anyway, she had to read the stipulations... fine, I get it.  I was told an engineer would be with me Friday morning 29 June… whatever, I just want the service I'm paying for.
So the week went by with essentially unuseable internet and a static boombox for a phone... thank God for my iPhone and 3G.  The engineer arrived promptly Friday morning as I was advised and soon got to work.  After a few tests in house at the main socket, he thought it was likely the 'lines' (what a shocker!) and would need to go out to track down where the disconnect was.  He was gone for a good 45-60 minutes, and on return was smiling/laughing saying my line was so rotten it was a miracle it was even suspended from the posts.  He did some work too in Boughton (village around corner) where 'the box' is.  From my research online, my exchange is in Stoke Ferry, so I'm not sure what 'the box' is, but apparently it's important.  He also replaced my main socket plate with an Openreach BT one (one slot located middle lower third of plate) which to my understanding has the noise filter built in.  He seemed as excited as me to try the BT Speedtest.  I did so with him watching and this was the result which is an acutal copy/paste from www.speedtester.bt.com ...
Download speed achieved during the test was - 0.69 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds  is 0.2 Mbps-1 Mbps.
Additional Information: Your DSL Connection Rate :5.63 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 0.75 Mbps
The engineer explained the problem was clearly with the line and that now my speeds should be approx 90% of the 5.63 Mbps so around a blazing 5 Mbps... I was so overcome with passionate joy I just about jumped in his arms and proposed on the spot... you can do that now right?  Anyway, I withheld from those wicked desires and settled on a good old fashioned handshake, a smile, a simple 'thanks so much', and 'would you like a cup of tea or perhaps a full roast dinner if you have the time".
However, the caveat was that due to my lines being **bleep** for so long, the IP Profile had dumbed down my connection speed to .75 Mbps.  He explained I would need to call BT customer service and have them reset my IP Profile though he was positive this was the reason of my terrible connection and unbroadband like speeds and my hip new static player (phone).   Easy, I thought as he drove out the driveway.
The minute he was gone, I was on the phone with BT to explain to reset the IP Profile.  You would have thought I was explaining how quantum physics work.  They didn't seem to understand what I meant, and to my dismay.... I just about lost it, but held it together..... and yes…. of course, again went through all the basics, checking my line, connections all fitted properly.  bla bla bla.  Check, check, check.  Eventually, after being on hold for a good 5 minutes, the representative (if I can call them that... seemed more like a script-reader to me) came back and stated we'd have to reset the IP Profile..... TA-DAH!!!!!!  HOLY BIRD T**D BATMAN!!!  Ya' think - that's what I called specifically to request! In the words of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo; ZOINKS!   I was gobsmacked.  I really do think a tear fell from my eye... a single tear of disbelief though it could have been laughter… no way to be sure really.
Other thoughts ran through my mind... which I can't post here so will substitute freely with the following...."Son of biscuit, for crying out loud, for heaven's-sake, cheese and friggin' rice... you get the idea.  I was told the IP profile reset will take 3 days... and to expect gradual improvement during that time hopefully into tonight and tomorrow.  After coming out of this wormhole conversation and back to reality, I somehow mustered up the courage to ask about compensation for not just the past few months, but even going back to the beginning of entering my contract seeing as it has constantly been slow to useless and the static sounding device... I mean phone, which we don't use much anyway.  She politely explained we could do something about that though to first resolve the problem.  For once, I couldn't agree more.

    Act II
So, after the call I just had to distance myself from all things technology for a few hours drained from the repetitive explaining/'troubleshooint'/and troubleshooting (good ideas that is).  Later that night, couldn't help but check the speedtester again... but no change.  However, since the engineer came out the internet has not once dropped… and still hasn't so that line thing has some merit (yippee).  This morning, checked again the ol' speedtester with all appendages crossed, anxiously waiting/watching the green status bar move across the screen with bated breath in the hope of seeing progress... and.... drumroll please.... (here comes the copy and paste again).....
Download speedachieved during the test was - 0.12 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.05 Mbps-0.25 Mbps.
Additional Information:  Your DSL Connection Rate :5.73 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 0.14 Mbps
*************** BA-DUMP TSSSSSSHHHHHH****************   My IP Profile is down 80% from yesterdays?!?!?!
(end of drum-roll, appendages coming uncrossed, heart sinking, nausea ensues, England loses again in penalties)
The array of aformentioned substitute words/phrases again raced to mind as I reached for my landline.  The crackle previously heard on the phone, by the way, was 90% gone, though certainly not normal/clean, but at this point, I could give a flying Crayola !  I just want useable true broadband at the approx 5 Mbps the ENGINEER thinks I should easily have.... or at least see progress towards it like he and customer service said I'd see over the next few days.  Anywhooooo, checked everything again... all good... all lines/plugs still secure (sarcasm).  Speedtested an hour or two later... still the same, so as I hadn't seen progress.... well, it had actually worsened considerably ... I called the dreaded customer service number of doom that links you to another universe of brilliantly trained Shakesperean script-readers with barely comprehensible accents.  Of course, during the beginnings of this inevitable call, my three children are all on their best behavior as the wife is having a nap (more sarcasm).
It's a Saturday, so there was a good 10 minute wait to talk to a rep but got one nonetheless eventually.  I can be a patient man.  I proceeded to again explain the saga to this point.  Not to my surprise, the response was 'let's first check you connections, where is your main socket, how many phones do you have connected, what's your mobile number, yada, yada, friggin'  yada' for the umpteeeeeenth time.  I realize it's not the individual's fault, and by all means, he HAS to stick to the script or who knows, maybe he'd be shot/tazed/lasered or something.  Different universe, different rules... you just don't know these days do you.  Besides, by this point it's getting humorous even for me.  So another 30 min passes, he tells me my line is fine though again doesn't seem to understand what I'm on about in regard to the profile reset ... I don't think they put that bit in the script... you guys really should add that in for good measure because it seems to carry great importance.  Anyway, he did have a new idea so I was game... to remove my brand new (one day old remembern) Openreach faceplace installed by the engineer the morning before, and to plug the line directly into that.  Did so... easy enough.  He then ran some further rigorous and I'm sure different than previous tests through the mainframe and called me back to say 'Sir, I have vvvvvery good news, your line is fine'; your problem is a faulty socketplate! (YES, THE BRAND NEW ONE INSTALLED THE DAY PRIOR… sorry for the caps, but there's no other way to express my emotion).  I can see you have 5.6 some Mbps connection."
Okay... so now the the coolness/patience/humour was fading... rightfully so I would argue.  I kept him on the phone, did the old speedchecker.... again.... and got the EXACT same:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :5.73 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 0.14 Mbps.
Thus, obviously, the bleeeeeeeding flippin' plate hasn't got a sausage to do with it.  I explained over and over like Rain-Man that though my line is capable of 5.7 Mbps, due to the profile I'm now down to -0.14….. -0.14!   Oh, the misery!  I reluctantly tried to inquire about the ip profile reset thing and why it was worsening instead of improving, but just got lots of 'ummmms, urrrrrrs, and sirs'.  Got nowhere, well actually, now that I think about it… went backwards…. Awesome!  I said there's no way it's the plate explaining why with human logic the speed test before and after takingit off it didn't change a thing, but fine, get another engineer or someone.... someTHING that can remedy this.  The response.... "Sir, yes I can do that for you, but you must understand there will very likely be a £100 charge for the service call as the problem is your wiring/plate."
At that point, the marbles were nowhere to be seen, the beans were everywhere, the bull was entering the china shop, chickens would be counted (even the unhatched ones),  the words were to be given to the wise, and yes... cows were to be had.  Just before I began to look to the sky in a raging Wolverine cry of anger and/or turn green and bulge to point of wearing nothing but purple shredded trousers, I still somehow kept it together and 'asked' to speak to someone else, a service manager of sorts.  Silly me, that never happened as they live in our universe (duh!), but after again running though the logic of it all, another 5 minute hold while he went again through the script searching frantically for 'IP Profile reset' and 'Service Manager/supervisor requests' , I was told my line would be monitored for 24 hours and I'd be contacted tomorrow by... 'The Level II Team'.
Oooooooohhhhhhhh….ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I do so pray they live in my world.  Quite excited about this Level II Team and I oh so hope they will have a direct phone number.
Right.  I think that is about it.  In a nutshell, yep, that sums up the adventure so far.  Please, please, please... I beg, I implore, I pray and I plead for this to be resolved.  I'm just about ready to take a chainsaw to the telephone pole (joking, joking, I kid, I kid) and just rely on my 3G which essentially is what I've been doing already for zonks.  And we both know that one zonk = a long time.
Well, if nothing else, I've found this quite therapeutic.  I off course am emailing you this for action/resolution/compensation.  Considering I've created a reasonably good mini-drama script here myself, I'll be sharing too with some friends.  Given the insane runaround and regression of progress thus far, I can assure you of the following:
    - If I have to pay a penny more....
    - Have to make more phone calls to 'the alternate universe of script-readers'....
    - don't receive some form of reasonable compensation for now just about a year of terrible service...
    - and ultimately, if this doesn't get resolved in a timely manner without my continued pushing/reexplaining...
I will make it my mission to spread this to every forum, business complaint sites, facebook (oh, that will be a good one), perhaps a few papers as well as I do have some media contacts who given a read, might be interested in publishing.  I do believe readers like a chuckle as well as do I.  And of course, I will abandon all things BT will no doubt encourage  encourage others to.  There's even the possibility of a turning the script into a full feature film for Youtube, I'd enjoy doing it.
All I want is the service I'm paying for.  What BT is selling.  To be treated like a customer.  I understand technical difficulties will happen and the lines in my area are obviously bad... but this keeps coming back to the customer to take care of instead of the company.  It's an endless circle and I've gotten absolutely nowhere with the exception of this marvelous novel.  I don't even know if I'll be able to post this anyway given my connection!  Thankfully, I can copy/paste and use my trusty 3G if that's the case.  You guys really need to speak to Apple - where is the infrastructure?  The customer service?
Please do pass this upwards, downwards, to your left and right.... to whomever... wherever... to a resource who can remedy the problem.
    …Its been real.
Humbly yours with regards and prayer,
    Your customer,

Thanks for the replies... I don't go on forums much but BT has not been any help so I'm trying it.  Anyway, just got off the phone with the level II team who has confirmed that no one has ever reset by IP profile.... wonderful.  So, essentially I was lied to on muliple occasions.  Supposively being reset now and will get a call back in 3 days as it stabilizes.
However, in the meantime... here's the data from my router and the latest Speed-test copy/pasted - let me know if you need anything else, but I do think this IP profile reset will work eventually:

  • Backing up before sending in for repair.

I have a MacBook Pro 17" and need to send it in to get repaired. My question is what's the best way to back up my data? I have an external HD. My MBP came w/OSX 10.4 but I bought 10.5 and installed it, so I assume when i get it back it'll probably be whiped and have 10.4 installed.
Should I use Time Machine to back it up, then when I get it back, install 10.5 then use Time Machine to restore everything I had? Or should I copy all my stuff to the HD then copy it back on the new machine after installing 10.5? Or should I get a trial of .mac, and use the backup utility it come with instead?

    Mark,
Yes, a Time Machine backup is all one needs to completely restore everything. I have to disagree with JoeyR on this one. Restoring from Time Machine is, in fact, a good deal less involved than using "clones."
A clone is going to require an additional hard drive, or at the very least an additional partition on an existing hard drive. This, in turn, may require the purchase of an additional device to accommodate the additional disk space needed. Then, you have to find and use the cloning software, learning how to use it in the process.
If, instead, you simply use Time Machine, all that will be required is that you boot to your Leopard install disk, connect the Time Machine backup drive, and choose "Restore From Time Machine Backup" from the "Utilities" menu. Once that's done, the restoration proceeds based on the speed of your external drive. In my case (with a FW 800 drive), that means about 30 minutes for a restoration of around 50 GBs. A "clone" will take no less time, given the same speed drive.
For heaven's sake, just use Time Machine and forget about making things harder than they need be.
    Scott
