Force quit everything to shutdown

Does anyone know of some sort of script or way of shutting down while force quitting everything to quit? Sometimes when I shut down some apps query me for my response and I just want to avoid all of that and have the forced to quit without any user interaction.

L - F,
This script has worked for me. Be forewarned that any unsaved changes in open applications will be lost. If you're comfortable with that, give it a try. Highlight the block of code below and paste it into your AppleScript Script Editor. Save the script as File Format: application, leaving the Options unchecked.
*tell application "System Events" to set visible of (processes whose background only is false and visible is false) to true*
*tell application "System Events" to set the_apps to name of every application process whose visible is true and name is not "Finder"*
*repeat with each_app in the_apps*
*tell application each_app to quit without saving -- WARNING: "without saving" will override dialog boxes; unsaved changes in open applications will be lost!*
*end repeat*
*tell application "Finder"*
*shut down*
*end tell*

  • Macbook Pro Spring 2011 17' i7 Programs do not shutdown have to force quit

I'm new to Mac so I'm not one hundred percent sure whats going on, but I'm having a problem with the new macbook pro spring 2011 17' i7 where when I go to shut down it gets interrupted with a message saying the application launcher cancelled shutdown.
I'm then finding that even though I have exited programs they seem to be still running in the background so I have to go and force quit everything like safari, itunes and so on, all programs seem to have the same problem. After I force quit I'm able to shut down. Anyone have any ideas on what might be going on or how I can fix this so I can shutdown normally?

Actually... the behavior you have described sounds consistent with proper operation. Certain applications may draw more power than can be supplied by the charger alone and may cause a slight draw on the battery (especially distributed computing projects like BOINC which can max out your CPU usage). It is normal for your battery to discharge down to 95% before the charger kicks in to bring the charge back up to 100%. It sounds like the AASP you brought your machine to may be needlessly replacing your logic board.

  • MB Pro 13" 10.6.8 Will not shut down after force quit everythin

    MB Pro 8,1 OS 10.6.8
Computer froze while Sophos Anti-Virus was updating. I force-quit everything. Finder would not restart. Used the Shut Down command from the apple menu, everything went well until I reached the background-picture-only stage of shutdown. It froze there and the power button is inop. Shows options to shut down or restart, but will do neither.
    IDEAS?

Sometimes after an update, you may have to wait awhile for it to shut down. The other day I was about to force mine to quit after waiting around 2-3 minutes. Finally it shutdown. After rebooting, it's working fine now.
You maybe just didn't give it enough time to finish what it was doing before shutdown.

  • I am unable to use my external CD player. I am told that the player is being used by another application, and that is not true. I have quit everything and restarted. I've unplugged the unit. I have a fairly new mac mini 10.8. What can I do?

I am unable to use my external CD player. I have a fairly new mac mini 10.8. I am told that the player is being used by another application, but it's not true. I've forced everything to quit and restarted. I've even unplugged the unit and let it rest. I've turned off and unplugged the mac too. I cannot make a CD. Why?

I misread your message. I thought it said I did not have burn support with the Samsung hardware.
When the CD goes in it says You inserted a bland CD. choose an action from the popup menu or click ignore
    open finder
    open itunes
    open disk utility
    make this action the default
    eject         ignore           ok
However, when I am making CDs. I am in itunes. That is where my recordings areI haven't tried to do it from this vantage point.
I don't know how to make a screen shot on a mac.
I go to my playlist and click on the little gear icon at the bottom left and I leave things as they are - preferred speed - maximum. I leave it on audio CD - and then I select BURN.
When I tried this the other day, I could not get it to burn, no matter how hard I tried - everything I could think of, using a different CD, force quitting everything I was not using, restarting the computer, unplugging the CD hardware and plugging it back in after a little while, nothing worked. I got that message that said my player was being used by another application every time I tried to make the CD.  This took over an hour. I don't know of another way to make a CD on the mac; I was not using another program or application. Now it seems to be working fine. I am burning another copy of something I gave away.
I wish I knew what caused this. It was a real problem Saturday morning.

  • ITunes freezing, and won't even force quit

There was an update to iTunes about a week ago. Since that update iTunes freezes when launched. "If" it starts working after I patiently wait several minutes, it freezes again as soon as I choose any menu option. If I connect my iPad it begins to synch, but it freezes during step 1 of 6 and never starts again. I tried holding down the power button to restart the computer, but unfortunately Lion opens the last used apps on restart, so guess what opens and freezes the computer again. If I manage to get it to force quit, everything else on the computer works fine. I'm using a 27" iMac with Lion and have 12 gigs of RAM. Any suggestions?

  • Since I downloaded the last update for Firefox, it freezes and I have to force quit.

Once I force quit, everything works fine until I open Firefox again.
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, since it also freezes when I try to open other sites, but I also switched to the new Yahoo mail in the last couple of weeks.

I am still having the same problem. There have been two Firefox updates since my post, but there is no change.

  • Safari is using 5 to 6 GB of memory (of 8) and everything slows to a crawl, requiring force quit of what little I have open.

Safari is using 5 to 6 GB of memory (of 8) and everything comes to screeching halt, requiring force quit of what little I have open.  Frustrated, I switched to Chrome.  This worked for awhile but now I see Safari is still 'there' in the  Activity Monitor, doing I know not what, as I never opened the app.
Sometimes the memory sink happens immediately, sometimes it builds up over time.  But it always happens regardless of what else is opened. I find I have to keep checking the activity monitor to make sure Safari has not snuck in there, even though I am not using the Safari browser. I tried to throw Safari in the trash but the system would not let me.
This is a brand new imac, only 2 weeks old and I feel like throwing IT in the trash too.  (Kidding).  But seriously, my old 2010 imac never had this issue.  Safari on my iphone and ipad appears normal.
My safari is 6.0.5 and my OS is 10.8.4.  I think these are both the latest and greatest.
I disabled all extensions in Safari.  Did not help.  I saw a post suggesting to cut off Java which I just did, but I am not optimistic this will work either given how persistent and pervasive this problem appears to be.
    Any help would be welcome.
    Deb

Although you are not launching Safari yourself, make sure it's not launching itself on restart. Any applications that are open when you shutdown/restart will relaunch unless you deselect the tick shown in this image:
Also check System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login items and review what's set to load at boot-up. Remove anything that is not required using the 'minus' button. You can always add things back if necessary.
Another thought - what third-party software have you installed, if any? Any anti-virus programs or apps that promise to 'clean' or 'speed up' your Mac. There are some apps that are known to bring a Mac to its knees - MacKeeper is top of the list.
If none of this helps, then I agree you should take advantage of your warranty/phone support.

  • I recently updated my macbook pro to Maverick, there was another system update so I updated and once I did I noticed that my safari wouldn't quit. I was unable to shutdown. I finally force quit safari and was able to shut down. Now it won't turn back on!

I have a mac book pro and am using Maverics. I saw that there was a system update so I updated and once I did I noticed a few weird things happening.
The tabsacross my browser didn't have little x's to close them I neede to right click to close the tab
My safari wouldn't quit. It was keeping me from shutting down my computer so I force quit then shutdown.
Now my computer is having trouble turning on. It stays at the white screen with the gray apple in the middle and the small circular loading bar. and flickers between that and black.
What is wrong? is there anything I can do to get it up and running?? PLEASE PLEASE help!

  • My MacBook Pro won't start after I forced quit because Safari stopped shutdown

I was deleting items of my external drive through MacBook keeper and when I went to shut down Safari (which was open) stopped the shutdown process. So in the end I force quit the computer. When it came to restarting I get the usula apple symbol and sound when start up begins but there it stops. The spoked wheel just keeps spinning below the Apple Symbol. Can anyone help?

I have managed to get into my computer through the OS X install disk but now my wi fi hardware is gone. Ie no airport.
When I try to re install the airport extreme wi fi base station software  it tells me it can't be installed as this version of Mac OS X (Lion) on is volume is not supported.
Not even an Ethernet cable gets me on line. In system preferences when I do a network diagnostic all I get is the spinning disk. Again, any ideas how to get around this?
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

My iMac does not shutdown but says I have programs open and that I must force quit and will lose changes.

  • Force Quit window 'blank' and cannot use shutdown/restart in menu

    I have a Dual G5 running 10.5.8.
Over the past 2 months I will have a situation where my computer will still work in individual applications, but
    1. I cannot use apple-tab to change applications
    2. I cannot select the restart/shutdown menu
    3. option-apple-esc brings up the Force Quit menu, but its blank
I end up having to hard-restart the machine using the button on the front.
Anyone have ideas on what may be at the root of this?
I have created another user account but still get the error.
I have a new hard drive installed.
I have run /sbin/fsck/ -fy all is clean
    I have run repair permissions
    What next?

    Hi
I have seen damaged/corrupted fonts cause similar issues. If you've introduced/downloaded new fonts in the last two months perhaps it's these that's causing the problems?
Have you tried booting from the installer disk and trying for an Archive & Install and selecting the Preserve Network users and Settings option? You could try using something more industrial like DiskWarrior first?
Whilst you have the chance make sure you have any relevant backups made and handy. Yes I know it's a brand new drive etc but you never know?

  • How can I shutdown my Mac since my Google Chrome is "open" and Force Quit is not working

Can someone help me shutdown my mac?
Problem: Google Chrome is not responding, and force quit from the dock, and using the apple icon seems to not work in quitting Google Chrome. Because of this, I cannot shutdown/restart my macbook pro.

    Try this:
    Command+Control+Option+Power button
If that does not work, as a last resort, hold the power button for about 5 seconds until the MacBook powers off. Wait 30 seconds before starting up again.

Before trying to answer, I wish to check if you are really running under 10.4.11 and in this case, which is the exact application's version in use.

  • Force Quit Doesn't Work/Freezing, Crashing

Oy. So I have to put this in context. Clutz that I am I dropped my Macbook Pro a year ago. Resulted in a cracked screen, screwed up optical drive and LED light/audio issues. Other than that it worked. It finally decided to clock out over the summer. Spent the money to get a new logic board(they pretty much gave me new computer and put my stuff on it). A few weeks after I got it back(and am now 4hrs away from nearest Apple store) It would freeze ocassionally(SBBD), no big deal, I'll force quit. Or reinstall that program(back then it was usually Mozilla Firefox, now it's kind of any program). As time has gone on it started freezing more frequently and force quit is no longer working. Had to look up what to do when force quit doesn't work, but the thing is, EVERYTHING freezes. I can usally click on a program(activity monitor) all I want, but it wont open. So this all results in having to force shut down, and it kills me inside to do that. Sooo I can wait until I'm back home and take this baby back to Apple, but I figured I'd give this a shot.
Should have mentioned this, I recently uprgraded to Mountain Lion about a month ago, hoping it would help. Worked for a while...but no such luck.
Programs that seem to crash most:
    Sibelius
    Mozilla Firefox
    Google Chrome
    iTunes
    Microsoft Word

Forgot mention the important part. Was forced to force shutdown last night. Then I turned it back on. It got stuck on the white boot up page with Apple logo and loading circle for about 15 minutes. Fans were really load. Shutdown again and left it off all night. This morning I try it again and it makes an odd noise and till gets stuck on white screen for about five minutes Then it turns grey, and then it turns on.
