Found an ipod and having no luck finding its owner

I found an ipod on Saturday and thus far I have posted on craigslist, our local community forum and even called the local Apple store, giving them the serial number, my name and number in hopes that they can find out who the ipod is registered to and have that person contact me to reclaim their ipod.
(I even emailed [email protected], but of course didn't hear back).
So, at this point, what else can I do to find the owner of this ipod? The ipod is locked with a passcode, so I can't open it to try to find any owner info.
Suggestions? I figure I will wait at least a full week before I force it into recovery mode and just keep it for myself, but I really want to give every effort possible in locating its owner before I do so.

My neighbor is a cop and I asked him if anyone has come by to claim it and he said no. They will just end up keeping it in a box somewhere if it goes unclaimed after a period of time.

  • Hi, I found an ipod anyone know how to find the owner so I can give it to them

Any idea's can I bring it into an apple store and can they find the owner from the serial number

Apple cannot help.  If the iPod is not locked, go to Utilities > Settings > Mail, Contact, Calendars.  There you should find the owners email address(es), so you can contact him/her.  If it is locked the only thing you can do is turn it in to the police.

You can send this iPod to Apple Support for servicing to have them reset it.
Or you can download itunes, a free application from apple, to reset it.
But you will not be able to use it in it's current condition without first unlocking it.
I'm not sure what the point of saying that is, but considering your previous comment let's set the record straight.
If someone finds a piece of lost property, it should be handed in to, either:
the police if found in the street or a public area.
the lost property office of the railway/bus company/similar if found on a train, station or bus.
the security office if found in a shopping mall, public building or similar.
Then, assuming that the owner who has lost it reports it to the police, lost property office, security office etc. (which is their obvious course of action) that the owner will have it returned. Here in the UK, if an item of lost property is not claimed by it's owner after a set time, most organisations usually have a procedure for disposing of it lawfully.
What a finder does not do is keep said lost property for themselves. I believe that in the UK it is known as theft by finding. It's certainly not the right thing to do.

  • I have found an iPod shuffle. I know its serial number. How do I find its owner?

I have found an iPod shuffle and so know the serial number. How do I find its owner?

I found an Ipod Shuffle and I called Apple Support desk to return it to the rightfull owner. I offered them to send my contact details to the owner. And then the owner can contact me if he likes. They refused to do this as it is a privacy issue. They advised me to bring it to the local police who can send the request to a special e-mail address of Apple. But I know that normally the police won't bother. And Apple will like this probably, as the previous owner will buy a new Apple device.

  • Someone stole my Ipod and i Need to find it but the person who stole it isn't using wifi how can i find it

Until it's turned on and connected to the Internet you cannot find it.
What To Do If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if Wi-Fi is enabled on the device. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

i recently lost my 3rd Gen iPod and ive been using find my iPhone to send messages to it, my email then instantly tells me that it had been displayed or it suonded off however it doesn't find the iPod's current location. you guys think this app actually works? i feel like my alerts are just bouncing back at me. please help. ... AFAIC Location Services is a joke.
With both devices sitting side by side on my kitchen table, Location Services has NEVER shown the devices to be any where close to each other, and at times Location Services has been as much as a 1/4 of a mile off between the two devices.
Your iPod Touch has no GPS receiver so determining its location relies upon wireless routers whose location is known. Its "location" is actually that of a wireless router. Your iPhone 4 can use GPS, cellular triangulation, and Wi-Fi. One would think GPS would be most accurate but urban areas have a greater density of cells and GPS signals are easily obstructed so cellular triangulation is often more accurate.
Therefore the two devices' locations can be expected to be different. Differences of a quarter mile are easily explained if you understand how location services works: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1975
Skyhook Wireless (I think Apple uses its own database now): http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/
Location Services is not a "joke"; its intended use is for basic navigation and for such applications as determining where the nearest restaurant is. It cannot tell you that your iPod is under the couch cushions and that your iPhone is in the car.

    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod and wifi is on and connect go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and and go to FIndMyiPhone. You can also wipe it and have it play a sound. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - Apple will do nothing

  • Hey i found an ipod and cant get to sync with itunes what do i do

hey i found an ipod and cant get to sync with itunes what do i do

If you mean that you have found "an iPod" - which is not yours, that is, you found it in the street, or in your office/school etc, then you should be handing the iPod into the relevant authority.
If you found it in the street, hand it in to the local police station.
If you found it at school, in your office, public library or similar, hand it in to the lost property office for that buiding/organisation.
After all, if you lost your iPod, wouldn't you ask at the police station etc. and hope that some kind person had handed it in?

Turn it in to the local authorities.

  • I found an IPod and wish to contact the user using the SrL No any ideas how I do this, the IPod is locked.

I found an IPod and wish to return it to the owner.  Anyone know how to get the owner dettails from the serial number?

Sorry, but there is no way you can get owner information from the serial number. The best route is to turn the iPod into your local police department.
    Regards.

  • When i updated my ipod and got i cloud recent photos disapeared off my ipod and now i cant find them. where are they?

when i updated my ipod and got i cloud recent photos disapeared off my ipod and now i cant find them. where are they?

You should ALWAYS make sure that everything is on your computer and backed up, most especially before any update. The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer regularly.
If you have failed to do this, then you need to redownload:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Found an Ipod touch--how can I locate the owner?

I found an Ipod touch--how can I locate the owner?  The Ipod requires a passcode.

You can't. Turn the iPod into your local police department, or the station closest to where you found the iPod. They have resources for identifying and contating the owner, should they wish to take that time.
    Regards.

  • I found an ipod and it has a password on it and im trying to get into the ipod to possibly find out who it belongs to. can anyone help me?

so  found this ipod today on the ground near my grandmothers friends house. It has a password on it and i am not sure how to get into it to possibly see if i can find out who it belongs to. any ideas how to even get passed the password?

Call the police. Give them the device's serial number which is etched on the back. If it's been reported lost with a serial number they can then return it to the owner. If not then you are the proud new owner of an iPod Touch.

  • My friend's friend found an iPod and deleted the data is there any way to find out who owned it before via serial number, bring it in somewhere, or other way?

Is there anyway to find out owner

    - Some users have said that if you contact Apple, Apple will try to contact the previous owner. Apple will not give you that information.
Apple - Support - iPod touch - Contact Us
    - You should also report it to the police and here
