Frankenmac - Weird Issues After Build

A friend of mine has been putting together a "new" iBook out of spare components from other iBooks. He has a G4 800MHz logic board, bottom case, top case, and Combo Drive from one iBook, a DC-In Board from another, a display assembly from a third, and a hard drive from somewhere else. He put it all together, and this is what happens:
When it tries to boot, the fan comes on and stays on
The eject button doesn’t work
When you press the F5 button, the number lock light comes on
The display only comes on, maybe, one out of twenty startup attempts
Could it be that the logic board is no good, or could it be some other hardware issue? The PMU has been reset several times and a couple of hard drives have been tried.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Chris,
Have you tried booting from the CD? Do you hear any beeping noises? The display may have been install incorrectly; did you remember to reconnect the display data cable? You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #106214 on Troubleshooting Startup Issues. Do you have access to another Mac? Can you hear the hard drive spinning? You may be having a problem with the reed switch. There are many problems that could be causing this; do you know that all the parts were working when you got them?

  • Subvi execution issue after building .exe

    Hi all,
I've seen a lot related to this topic but haven't found anything specific to my situation.
I built a simple wrapper to launch different subvi's depending on if it is saturday or not.
The vi works perfectly fine as a vi in LV2012. But when I build the application, both cases execute-that is, both subvi front panels appear and i get a message warning me that I can't run multiple instances of the same subvi.
I expect it to execute either the true or false case and open the correct subvi once and be done with it. Not sure why both cases try to execute more than once only after I build the application. Ideas?

To begin with, you will never get a TRUE (Sat) output because you wired 3 to the offset input of the String Subset function. It should be wired to the length input.
None of this can explain the observed behavior, mo matter how buggy the comparison is.  Only one of the cases will execute. It is never possible that "both cases execute" as described.
What is the exact error message? Can you attach the full toplevel VI? What else is in there?
Once you build an application, the toplevel VI will run when opened, of course. Is this handled correctly in the code?
Can you attach the full project, including the build specs?

  • Need help on a really weird issue after ios 7 install

Ok I installed ios 7 yesterday without any issues except personal feelings regarding the new os but I digress. After the install I started exploring and found a glitch, hack, conspiracy, whatever you want to call it. When I open safari there are 5 seperate "app like boxes" or shortcuts that have all Miscrosoft windows material/information. I have a 4s and my wife the 5 both with ios 7 and her's is not like this. Instead she has a few shortcuts to a few different apps that were not picked by her. I called apple care and they said they never heard of it nor did they have a fix, just to do a hard reset. They also mentioned that if I had a hotmail/outlook material installed prior to the new ios install that this could of caused it but backed away from that resolution as I further described my issue. After the hard reset and 3hrs later, no dice, same issue. Any suggestions? I hope I explained it for you guys to inderstand but this is truly a must see to beleive/understand.

    Thanks Josh.
I finally tracked this down last night with help from the folks at actionscript.org.  I hadn't deactivated my Debugger which runs off of a desktop AIR application - so the server was trying to reach my localhost to run its trace statements.  Deactivating the Debugger fixed the problem.

  • PLEASE HELP! Weird Issue after Restore

I had to do a restore on my iPhone. I'm in India right now and everything seems to be working fine, but I keep getting an error message at startup that says
    "Waiting for AT&T activation
    This may take some time."
It gives the option to dismiss, but why is this message even showing up? My phone number shows up properly in iTunes and the phone recognizes that I'm activated properly. I don't get it.
Is this going to show up every time I start the iPhone?

Did you do the restore here in US or in India? That SIM card is looking for at&t service and since it is not available there it gets stuck in that endless loop. Try to put it in airplane mode and see what it tells you. All I can say is just cancel it and sync as you would normally do. Watch out for a huge bill IF you are making calls. Hope you realize that and don't be surprised when the bill arrives.Read up on some of the stories other users here have posted on that issue.

  • [SOLVED] A series of weird issues after update (printing, clock etc.).

    After an -Syu
    1) I cannot print - printer is not detected and cupsd doesn't start:
/usr/sbin/cupsd: error while loading shared libraries: libkrb5.so.22: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
(I've reinstalled cups and heimal, have run updatedb and have created symlinks to so.25, but no joy).
    2) I can't open HP Device Manager - claims I need pyqt, even though I have it!
    3) Can't open printer management - Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:631.
    4) Gnome clock applet doesn't load or work
    Any thoughts?

I think I have. I've been using Arch for over a year and have merged pacnew files multiple times. Anyhow, wouldn't an incorrectly merged pacnew have created problems from the time it was last edited, in my case January 29?
Or is the LOCALIZATION session only read when mkinitpcio is run? That would explain it.

  • Flex 4.5 weird issue

    Hi All,
I have encountered a weird issue after I migrated my application from flex 3.5 to flex 4.5.
In our application, we have 3 kind of views, View, ChartView and StackedView, the later extends the former one, let's say, in ChartView we have
<local:View...>....</local:View>, in StackedView we start with <local:ChartView>. We config the view type in the database as View.swf, ChartView.swf and StackedView.swf. The problem here is for example, if I load a view with StackedView.swf and change to a view with ChartView.swf, some of the components will not initialized, we get runtime exception like
ArgumentError: Error #2004: One of the parameters is invalid.

        at mx.managers::LayoutManager/doPhasedInstantiationCallback()[E:\dev\4.5 .1\frameworks\projects\framework\src\mx\managers\LayoutManager.as:1180 ]
We debugged into the code, and found that the exception occoured before the parent component is initialized. Actually the parent(or the parent's parent) component's height or width is NaN.
By the way, if we load ChartView.swf directly, everything works perfectly.
And I just solved the problem by spliting the 3 type of views, say, keep the View.swf, comibine the code from View.swf with ChartView.swf to a new ChartView.swf, the same to StackedView.swf, which now combines 3 type of views' code.
Though the problem is solved, but everyone can see it's not an elegent way, and the maintenence cost is high.
I suspect it is something related to load module or unload module, seperating the 3 type of views just make sure they didn't share something.
Can any expert help me figure this out? Many thanks.

Use the profiler to see what is hanging onto the old memory.  But my main point is not about memory.  It is about sizes.  An empty container has no default size.  When it gets a child it often picks the child size, and then if that child is removed and another child is provided, instead of picking that new child’s size, it might still use the old child’s size, and that might cause the new child to layout at a different size than if it was the first child.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 - OSD issues after update to CU4

Over the weekend, I updated my SCCM environment from RTM to CU4.
All seems to have gone well, except for OSD
When attempting OSD, I receive the following error:
"An error occurred while retrieving policy for this computer (0x80004005)..."
So, a quick look over at smsts.log and I see the following:
I did some bing'in and googling around for this and found plenty of pages about this error and all pointed to incorrect BIOS times.  I checked the BIOS time on the system I was trying to image, and it was correct (including date).  Just in case,
I tried two more machines and I had the same issue.  Each machine has the correct BIOS date/time as well, so the issue I have doesn't seem related.
... and that brings me here.  Does anyone have any insight as to what might be causing the issue?
    Thanks!

I noticed two thing in your log file that are worth a check:
    I noticed a 404 error in your log file that might indicate an issue with some files that can't be found. Check the IIS log file for more information;
I noticed that you're using HTTPS. I've seen weird issues after a CU update in which the distribution point certificate got missing. In that case, check the distribution point properties and update the boot image.
    My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/
    Follow me on twitter: pvanderwoude
I did miss the 404 message... silly me.
This definitely pointed in the right direction.  What we found was that it wasn't an issue IIS or the https certificate, but our certificate chain had issues.  We cleared out the certificate chain issues and re-installed the MP role.   This
    cleared the issue immediately.
    Thanks Peter for the guidance!

  • Gnome 3.16 resume from suspend weird issues

After upgrade to gnome 3.16 with gnome-shell 3.16.1-2  and gdm 3.16.1.1-1, also with previous 3.16 versions, after I suspend to ram for some time and resume from it, the gdm window freezes and cannot input. After some tty switching using ctrl+alt+f1/f2/f3, the login window becomes usable slowly. And after I unlock it with password, the desktop and running applications shows just fine on tty2. But now when I switch to tty1, there is still a gdm login screen, if I login into it, tty2 shows, and switching to tty1 the gdm login is still there, still usable. Anyone see same things?

Got a similar weird issue - next to others. After waking up from suspend I've got a second Xorg-Session running on TTY2. This usually leads to a Xorg server crash.
I'm not very satisfied with Gnome 3.16 these days.

  • Screen issue after replacement - Model CB30

Replaced broken screen on Toshiba Chromebook. After replacing the screen:
1 – Unit powers on, new screen is receiving power, but the screen is black. No image.
2 – Double check – this is NOT the screen brightness being turned down via the keyboard.
3 – System recovery - display is back – screen comes on perfectly.
4 – Setup successful.  Unit is functional. Can use it with no issue.
5 – First time you shutdown / restart the unit, the screen is non-functional. Same as
described in #1 - screen is black. No image, but it is getting power....
    Really a weird issue...

I should say that the replacement was done by the apple store.  If they refuse to fix it properly, what options do I have?

  • Strange issues after 10.6.4 update

    Hi there
I've noticed a few weird things after upgrading to 10.6.4:
    1) All my fonts in Microsoft Office applications have been set to default. After changing then, they still revert back.
    2) When browsing the web, TinyMCE boxes display weird characters when I enter text
    Anyone else experience similar issues?

Did you update to 10.6.4 via the combo updater? If not then download it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048
Repair Permissions using Disk Utility, run the updater and then Repair Permissions again.

  • Various Issues After Update To Bootcamp 3.2 (MacBook Pro, WindowsXP)

    Hi all,
i'm experiencing various issues after i updated to Bootcamp 3.2.
I first was running Bootcamp 3.0 (everything worked just fine, except some nv4_disp.dll bluescreens). I updated to Bootcamp 3.1 and then to Bootcamp 3.2.
Everything seemed to be fine firstly, but now i noticed various issues:
    1. I can't access the Bootcamp control panel (crashes when i try to open it (applecontrolpanel.exe at Offset 0004703a)
    2. Everything USB doesn't seem to work (except external USB drives), like USB printer does not print, camera attached via USB does not import photos)
When i check the Driver-Manager i'm seeing multiple USB hubs, root hubs and host conrollers (4 root hubs, 2 openHCD usb host controller, 2 usb hubs...). When i try to configure the USB port the printer is connected to i also get an error ("not supported").
    3. When i try the extended display settings i'm getting an "NVIDIA display panel extension can't be displayed".
MacBook Pro 13inch, Windows XP MediaCenter Edition (SP3), NVIDIA GeForce 9400M.
    Thanks: Lars

Answered my own question, but want to post how I did it in case other users have the same problem.
I am assuming this issue appeared because I live in Canada. When I installed the Bootcamp 3.2 update, for some reason it changed my regional language of my system to French (Canada) - Canadian Multilingual (Apple)
To change it back I went in Windows XP to Control Panel, Regional and Language Options. Languages tab. Under Text services and input languages clicked Details.
Under settings tab changed Default Input Language from French (Canada) - Canadian Multilingual (Apple) to English (Canada) - US. Click apply.
Wait...it was working, but in the time it took me to type this it suddenly reverted and Im back to weird character mappings inspite of the language setting being changed.
