Free RAM memory

Hi,
Is there any C function that returns the total RAM memory
and the free RAM memory in my CPU ?
How to use the function ?
Thanks,

The kstat(3KSTAT) interface has the information you are
looking for. Try running kstat at the command line and
in there you will find physmem and freemem under module:unix, class:pages.
Note that free memory pages on Solaris is not the most
useful statistic due to caching on the system.
There is some sample kstat code on access1.sun.com.

  • Laptop G470 has 0 Available (free) RAM memory

    Greetings everyone,
I open another thread just for this subject...
    I have a Lenovo laptop G470 with i3, win7 64 bits and 4GB ram
when i look on the task manager, this is what i see:
    Total RAM: 4039 mb
    Cache: 2732
    Stand by: 2631
    Available: 0
Appart from the fact that the total RAM is not equal to cache + stand by...
MY PROBLEM IS that the avilable memory is ZERO (0)
When it starts it has like 2000 MB on available ram, but as time goes by, it goes down to 0... system goes fast, but don't know if this is normal
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

  • N96 ram memory problem

hi, i have my n96 for two weeks now. i don't have any problems with nokia maps, the pc suite, music player... (i've heard many saying that they have these problems), my problem is with the ram memory. i usually have only 38.7 Mb of free ram memory, even if i don't have any programes running in the background (not that i know of - i removed all programes installed by me). i updated the soft, hard reset. still the same problem.

The same problem for me too !
After booting my N96 with Handy Taskman I can see that I have only 45 Mb free RAM and with 128 Mb RAM it's not normal !
I asked the question on-line to Nokia and they were not capable of giving me an answer!

  • Free RAM - a dif in iBook performance between 25M and 1G?

Hi...I keep several programs running on my iBook 1.33 with 768 onboard. Activity Monitor shows that at its lowest, my free RAM dips to around 25 or so megs when I'm streaming video from a news site.
My question is whether or not there is a difference in the Book's performance when I have 25 megs of free RAM....or 500 megs? Or being "in the green" means that there is simply enough...being "greener" won't make a difference...
I know that more is always better, but I'd like to know if more is necessary.
The answer will determine whether or not I switch out the 512 for a 1G.
    I'd appreciate any feedback...Thanx!

In those instances where chip RAM is needed (and not in a video-intensive
situation where you can't upgrade VRAM, and regular RAM is not shared)
the chip RAM is faster and more readily is available to priority applications
and the OS X system itself. And Virtual Memory (VM) is slower, due to
the fact that is derived by the computer having to read-write to/from the
internal hard disk drive, and that is a slower and less-direct process.
Another way to speed up a limited upgrade option computer would be to
pay to have (or be brave and suffer any consequences, and DIY) the
internal hard disk drive replaced with a faster spin-rate new drive which
also has a larger buffer - and - more free space. This and the chip RAM
could make the computer act more like a faster model computer. At
least until the hard disk drive gets fragmented and or more than 3/4 full.
There are more than a few things one can do to enhance the performance
of the hard to upgrade iBook G4 (or iMac G4) since you can't change the
CPU or make the system bus work any faster. Bottlenecks aside, a few
items that can be upgraded, along with a regimen of routine maintenance
can help almost any computer not pushed beyond its limits, to work better.
Even with a hard disk drive only 75% full, it can be more sluggish and
waste processing and swap-file cycles (moving data bits as VM to/from
the hard disk drive when taxing the limited resources of the computer)
if the hard disk drive has never seen much maintenance. If you use an
external FireWire enclosed hard disk drive, and learn how to clone the
whole iBook's drive contents over, then be sure the clone-copy can boot
the computer, before proceeding; you could use the disk utility to wipe
the drive and use the zero-overwrite option, totally erasing and then to
reformat the drive again, to clear any low-level issues and defragment
the drive, (plus pull any seldom used saved items off the computer,
to free-up hard disk drive space, for the system to use as swap & VM)
you could also reclaim some of the original illusions of speed now lost.
{As the computer's OS gets more and more parts, updates and also
    any application and associated files to sort through, it will run slower;
    VM also this adds into the mix, with a fuller and older hard disk drive.}

Minor to major background maintenance, preventative, can be helped
through the use of this utility interface tool; it can help the OS X and
your computer generally run a bit better. I use OnyX's 'automation'
selection and also have this utility's preferences set for it to restart
by itself after it runs all of the checkboxed items in this set. For this,
see: Titanium Software - OnyX: http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html
Also, About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions (& 'repair disk' from
the booted installer's version of Disk Utility; research this further.)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452
Sometimes, even just repairing those disk permissions can help; and
the OnyX tool can run that, as part of the Automation sequence; but
it should be run more often from D.U. than you'd need to use OnyX.

There is a relationship between RAM, free HDD space as Virtual Memory,
system maintenance, disk drive health, and other interrelated details.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • MacBook Pro being really slow and vert little free RAM.

    Hi,
Just recently my MacBook Pro has been running really slowly when navigating between applications and tabs in safari. I checked to see how much RAM was free and it said only 30MB. I have no more apps open or things running than I normally do. This Mac is 6 months old but my old mac that was nearly 3 years old tended to run quicker, and as mentioned, I have no more apps running than I previously had. Maybe Word, Excel, iTunes and Safari. Can anyone help explain what might be making it slow and what might be hogging all the RAM?
    Thanks
    Matt

I ran the Etrereport and this is what i got back.

  • Why is my Macbook pro getting out of RAM memory?

I am getting a message that tells me i am out of memory and it gives me an option to quit apps i have opened, most of times it's just Safari and i have no idea why is this happening suddenly, i have Mavericks 10.9.4 everything updated, and a 15 inches Macbook pro 2.3 GHz Quad-core 4 Gb-Ram.
Sometimes it gets out of memory just surfing on Safari, checking mails, or chatting on Skype, what could be wrong?
I had upgraded to the public beta of Yosemite but i couldn't stand it and formatted my computer again and downgraded to Mavericks, but i don't know why i feel it slower now compared with the last time i used it with the same Mavericks version. i hope this doesn't delete my question since i am not revealing anything about the beta.
    Please any Help!

Get rid of "Memory Clean." It's worse than useless.
There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks.") The procedure may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the  leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Spinning beachballs, slow machines, and vanishing free RAM

I have a tale to tell and a question at the end.
I have an iBook G4, running OS10.3.9. I have been using it without major problems for over a year. I have over 9 G of free disk space.
About a month ago, with no apparent cause, I became afflicted with the spinning beach ball of death. This would happen usually after I had been using the machine for a few hours and had three or four major applications running: iTunes, Word, Entourage, and Safari, say. The machine would become unresponsive. The beach ball would appear for virtually every mouse click. At its worst, it could take three minutes or more for the machine to respond to a command. Once in this state, even quitting applications did not significantly increase speed. Usually a restart did, but not always.
The affliction was unpredictable. I could go several days without a problem, and then, bingo, I’m in the molasses again.
What did I do? I updated my anti-virus software and gave a scan — no problems found. I checked for updates for my various applications and for the operating system. Suspecting Entourage, which has been prone to slowness, I rebuilt its database. I think I rebuilt my desktop, too. I ran Disk Utility and fixed permissions — no improvement. I ran Tech Tool — no problems found. I ran MacJanitor — no improvement. I ran Activity Monitor to see if the CPU was tied up. No, it wasn’t. Was the RAM overloaded? I only had 256 M, and it was basically fully allocated most of the time. I had significant numbers of page-outs. The green wedge of free RAM on the Activity Monitor pie chart was just a sliver.
So, I installed another 512 M of RAM. This seems to have helped. But to my surprise it hasn’t completely cured the problem.
I keep Activity Monitor running and set its icon in the dock to show RAM use. At the beginning of the day, maybe 70 percent of the RAM is green (free). After I start my usual round of applications, the green slice drops to say 40 percent.
Now here is the odd thing: the amount of green will shrink during the day. There seems to be a ratchet effect going on. When I start an application, the amount of free RAM shrinks. When I quit the application, some of the free RAM comes back, but not all of it. Also, the amount of free RAM may shrink even if I do nothing at all — if I just go for a break and come back to my machine a while later.
Right now, it is late in the day. I am back to a sliver of green on the RAM chart. I have tried restarting my computer. Instead of the 70 percent green wedge I expected, it came right back to a nearly fully allocated RAM. If I try to switch between apps or start a new app, or even copy something to the clipboard, I may get a beach ball for five to twenty seconds — or I may not. It's unpredictable.
Another odd thing: The amount of memory listed as in use by various processes in Activity Monitor does not add up to the amount of memory shown as in use on the pie chart. The sum of the memory listed in use is lower than the amount shown in use on the pie chart.
So what is going on? Is this just bad memory management by OSX? Has my machine’s RAM been taken over by aliens? Or is it something else? And is there a cure?
    Thanks for any help.

    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

An update -- and hopefully a root cause and solution.
The maintenance task that seemed to free up the RAM was rebuilding the locate database, one of the weekly tasks that MacJanitor or OnyX will do on request. Why it worked, I don't know. It seemed to reduce the amount of assigned but inactive RAM.
It was only a temporary fix though. The amount of free RAM would begin to slowly drop after the task was done, and within a few hours it would be almost gone again.
Yesterday afternoon, the spinning beachball returned with a vengance. This time, however, it appeared while over half the RAM was free. Tasks shown in Activity Monitor, particularly window servers, began to hang.
I repaired permissions. No improvement. I ran Disk Utility from the start-up disk. It found problems on the hard drive that it could not repair. I ran Tech Tool from its CD. The hard drive failed Tech Tool's write and read buffer tests and had flaws in its directory. Tech Tool repaired the directory. I rebooted OS X, and the machine still had the slows. I backed up key data. I ran Tech Tool again from the CD. This time the disk passed the read and write buffer tests, but the directory was rotten again.
I repaired the directory and did an Archive and Install of the operating system. When the machine restarted, I ran Software Update. It downloaded 8 files. When it tried to then read them on the disk and install them, every one of them was corrupted.
Cut to punchline: I took the machine to an Apple Store today and they diagnosed a bad hard drive. I suspect that an infrequent intermittent disk error, worse in the afternoons when the machine was warm, was the source of the problems from the beginning. Yesterday, the disk failure became more frequent. By today, the disk was basically useless.
Thank you, Andrew at the Apple Genius Bar. Thank you, makers of external hard drives that make frequent back-ups easy. Back up your data, friends. Hard drives can fail.

  • How can I know the amount of free RAM when my VI is running?

I need to know the amount of free RAM when my VI is running.

If you are using Windows NT/2000/XP, monitoring free memory is very easy. Simply right click on the task bar and open the Task Manager. Click on the Performance tab, and you'll be able to monitor the physical memory total and available on your PC.
If you are using Windows 9X, you will have to add some optional resources. Open Control Panel, then select Add/Remove Programs. Click on the Windows Setup Tab, and select System Tools, then click the Details... button. Check the boxes to install System Monitor and System Resource Meter. Click OK, and you will be prompted for your Windows CD. Insert the CD and Windows will add the monitoring tools. You can then use them to watch your free resources.

  • Too small free ram on nokia e72

i got too small free ram on my nokia e72 (about 30 mb free ram), i can't make a full multy tasking on my e72 device,.. Anybody have same trouble..??? Let's nokia solving it in new firmware

    Hi agus_ependi,
Welcome to the Nokia discussion boards!
It may be so that you are running out of memory on the phone memory because you may have installed applications and saved media onto this drive. Try saving and installing these onto the mass memory or memory card because this will free up vital phone memory that your E72 needs.
Let us know how you get on.

I refered the metalink document id: [ID 761960.1]
Database Instance Using Swap Space When There is Plenty of Free RAM metalink note [ID 761960.1]
and tried the disabling the sga_max_size and memory_max_target and memory target with all different combination but no use.
We have one more box where same setup was configured in solaris platform but there the above memory parameters are not disabled but it is not using swap space it takes memry only from physical RAM
Can any one throw some lights on this issue. It wopuld be great if I come to know where the exact problem
    Thanks in advance
    With Regards,
    Boobathi P

    Hi,
I didn't say I am not using 11gr2 memory parameters I am using all the automatic memory parameters but the thinks is as per the metalink note I tried by disabling the automatic memory parameters. but that didn't help me in preventing unnecessary swap usage. So I reverted. now it is using automatic memory parameters.
so What is the solution for this?
    With Regards,
    Boo

  • N8 - Ram memory

Ive got a problem with the Ram Memory on my Nokia N8.
When i switch the phone on i have 115mb free and 131 used, this is fine and the phone works quite quickly.
However over the next few days i lose about 20 to 25mb a day resulting in less than 50mb free after only a few days which makes the phone very slow and not responsive.
I use the phone for the same things every day, calls, texts, emails, playing videos / music, taking photos and a bit of internet surfing. After closing an app the free memory goes back up but obviously something is happening to use the memory and not give it back!!!!
Id like to know what is using this memory and is there anything i can do to stop it other than switching the phone off and back on every day??
I have no such problems with my 808 so im well confused as to what is happening!

Perhaps it is Anna. It is always recommended that one updates to the latest version of firmware, as it brings reliability, performance and functional improvements. Belle and Belle Refresh greatly increase the performance and stability of the phone and make it much prettier. I'm sure that if you update, the RAM problem will go away.
But the downside to firmware updates, as you have also stated,is that some of your old apps may not work, as compatibility is not guaranteed. In these cases, you will need to contact the app developer themselves to ascertain the status of the app and its compatibility.
In conclusion, the choice is up to you. I have Belle Refresh on my N8, and i'd take that any day over losing compatibility with some apps.

  • After Effects not using free RAM?

    Hi there
Just like to ask question regarding after effects and ram usage.
I remember before I installed the app Memory Booster - that allows you to keep track of how much ram, there was a healthy use of RAM there from after effects.
But i noticed today, whilst rendering and doing background cache rendering, the free RAM still available stays at around 4GB and I am wondering why it's not using this free RAM to help faster rendering?
this is my current multi-processing/ram settings on AE- essentially it should be using up to 6.5 GB of RAM as i allocated as I need faster rendering? Just wondering why it's staying stuck at around 3-4GB of free RAM on my system when it could clearly be used by AE. I want AE to use the RAM as it is the only running program on my system when i work!
Memory Booster down to 3.18GB with one safari tab open for Adobe forums, when exiting, it jumps back up to 4GB free RAM
    Confused!
    Thanks

Different projects, different footage attributes, different AE features used, different effects used, different delivery specs....
...are you comparing apples to apples, or apples to ORANGES?  We don't know that.

  • E72: Low free RAM is a HUGE HUGE HUGE BUG!

    HI 2 everybody.
I bought an E72 some days ago, and I really suprised about the product quality.  Of course, in this case "quality" means some things very good, and some things VERY bad.  But the problem is, in this case, bad things.
WHY IN THE HELL E72 HAS SO LOW FREE RAM?
It's incredible, I remember N95-1.  The main difference is N95-1 had 64MB, E72 doubles that! I cannot believe that after booting up, the phone left only 28MB out of 128!  I cannot load 2 big programs simultaneously, because the OS crash at any moment because of low free memory.  I never had this problem with my "oldie but goodie" E71. And I'm surprised that, after 2 firmware revisions, Nokia doesn't solve the problem!  Why??? It's so difficult to unload many unused processes?  Is so difficult to activate some type of virtual memory? AFAIK, N95-1had virtual memory. And, by the way: why E71 doesn't come with 192 or 256MB RAM???
Now, knowing the fact that Nokia doesn't want to solve this issue, well... Anyone has trying or tried to solve that?  Any Symbian expert? Perhaps killing unused or annoying processes?
    Thanks a lot.
    Nokia: IT'S A SHAME!

To the OP, its not a bug, but a total failure of the development process. Its quite pathetic that even the E63 has 70MB free after startup while the E72 has only 40MB.
As soon as you load any WWW page the thing flunks.
So apart from using it as a tether device to my laptop the E72 is a failure as any sort of net enabled phone ... compared to my E63 (and yes I have both) its speed only helps you to hit dead ends faster

  • Too Much Inactive RAM, Too Little Free RAM

I used to have a 2007 iMac running Snow Leopard, and I switched to a 2011 iMac running Mountain Lion. On both of my computers, I kept running out of free RAM after a while, and my inactive RAM kept taking up all my free RAM. It still does it. I end up with around 30MB of free RAM, a reasonable amount of active RAM, and a massive amount of inactive RAM after a few days, then my computer slows down a lot.
I have to keep flushing the inactive RAM with a memory cleaning tool or else my computer slows to a crawl. Repairing the permissions is supposed to clean out the inactive RAM (thanks, Tuttle), but alarmingly, this doesn't work for me. There must be something causing this problem, and I want to find it. How do I do this? Can processes currently running be using inactive RAM, or is that only possible if they have just been closed? Is there a tool that can check how much inactive RAM is allocated to each process?
P.S. To make it clear: I know that I'm not supposed to worry about inactive RAM and let the system do its own optimization, but it must not be doing it right because it's causing extremely noticeable slowdowns. The computer is like a Geo Metro pulling a whale if I don't flush the inactive RAM periodically.

Since you are so concerned, take your iMac to your local AS or an AASP for a FREE diagnostic test.  At least you will have piece of mind when you get a confirmation of what is really going on.
