Freezing after HD installation - failure - HELP.

Hi,
Major major problems after attempting a HD upgrade. Initially the system was freezing when a Seagate Barracuda 400GB drive was installed as primary boot drive with 10.4. installed. Jumpers were set to master - with drives 2, 3, 4 running off a SATA controller. After 2/3 minutes - system would freeze and required force quit. So removed drive - re-installed 80GB drive and the same is happening. Help.
The boot drive has Tiger - my question is - could the failed installation upset the CPU - and if so - should I re-set it? I've even tried re-booting of a secondary drive running 10.3.9 - and the same thing happens - total freeze.
All suggestions for cure would be appreciated.
BB

Hi Majordadausma,
Haven't tried changing the jumper to cable select yet - thanks for the advice. I've actually ordered a Dual core G5 - because IMO - the G4 just can't handle my power apps + Tiger. Re-setting the pmu stabilised the system to work with - and when i have the new G5 - i'll get back inside the G4 and try your tip. Too scared to attempt any more meddling just now.
Finally - I did note the Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 - ST3400832A firmware was 3.03! Could this be significant as the other HD in the G4 has firmware 3.06?
Regards,
BB

  • Mavericks freezing even after clean installation. Help me, please!

    Hi,
I'm having some issues with my Mavericks in my MacBook Pro Late 2011 (below you'll find my system information from EtreCheck).
I've tried update my Mountain Lion to Mavericks (10.9). The installation went well, but after that the OS has freezed several times, mainly when I was using iPhoto and Firefox (or Safari) together. My iPhoto library has more than 200 GB. I needed to forcely restart the machine every time the freezing ocurred. Important: the freezing was not completely; I could do things like show the desktop (I use one hot corner for that), but couldn't open or close programs.
I've got very frustrated and thought about downgrading to ML.
But I tried to do a clean installtation of Mavericks (10.9.1). I did that, but problems continued (different, but continued).
First, I've got a strange message saying that I run out of memory application (same as this one: http://www.michaelkummer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/2013-10-27-at-2.25-PM-2x .png). This problem didn't happen anymore (maybe because I've deleted all my Internet accounts, as suggested by someone here, because I've received some Keychain's messages asking me to change my passwords).
The freezing problem continues now, but a little differently. Sometimes, when I open my MB Pro display, the screen gets blank and didn't appear nothing in it, and I need to forcely restart it frequently.
Well, that's it. I'm seriously considering to do the downgrade, but decided to try getting help here with you, all the experts and good people.
    Thank you in advance!

have you tried resseting it by holding the sleep/wake button and the home button for 15 seconds? if that doesn't work try doing a DFU mode(http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034) restore and see if that fixes it.

  • Brand new MSI P7NGM-Digital nVidia 730i freezes after driver installation

I have just finished installing Win XP 32bit OS and installed all drivers that came with the MSI disc.
    Drivers installed : Chipset/SM BUS/Realtek LAN/Realtek HD audio/Realtek HD KB update/display drivers.
As sson as i boot into XP my system will freeze completely after 2-5 mins. Since this is a completely fresh install I strongly suspect this is a driver issue but I cant figure out which one it is and why. I didnt some minor troubleshooting like uinstalling drivers one by one to find out the guilty but it seems all of them are!
System hasnt frozen in Safe mode/VGA mode and after uninstalling all drivers in normal mode.
Now iam downloading drivers straight fromm the net.
Has any1 gone thru this issue before ?

guys, i need some help here.
The problem has been narrowed down to display drivers. Even the latest ones from this website which come bundled in Chipset drivers, freezeup the system after booting into Windows in normal mode.
Ofcrse the system hasnt yet frozen up in Safe mode or w/o the display drivers , like now.
Also, one thing i noticed last time it froze after installing display drivers seperately from this website, when it froze ig gave a loud high frequecy continous beep.
How do i solve this problem, shld i try nvidi drivers staight from nvidia?

  • Constant freezing after clean installs of OS X

    I have a Late 2008 Macbook Pro.
I did a clean install of the OS and immediatly after booting into OSX, the system freezes and I get the spinning beach ball. Sometimes it lets me click on Finder, but then it just freezes again.
I have installed Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion, each time formatting the hard drive and doing a clean install. It happens everytime on each version!!!
I have checked disk permissions and verify disk through Disk Utility. Comes back clean.
I have ran the apple hardware test. Comes back clean.
Here is the kicker. It works perfectly in SAFE mode. It does not freeze up at all.
Please help! I've spent many hours (20+) trying to fix this.

Are there any methods to confirm a faulty graphics adapter, such as running some kind of diagnostics? Im assuming the graphics card is built into the logic board so I cant just replace it. In Windows I could reinstall the graphics controller and reinstall the driver. Are there any Mac equivilents to this? I am fairly new to Mac troubleshooting.

  • MBP mid-2009 Freezing after Hard Drive upgrade -HELP!

So, my Apple Care just ended and I was almost always at a full 320GB, so I decided to upgrade my hard drive to 1TB.  I purchased a Western Digital TB drive (9.5mm) at a store recommended by an Apple Genius and followed the instruction on youtube exactly, as well as having another visit to the Genius bar, ensuring I grounded myself often throughout the process. My computer is a 15" MBP originally loaded with Snow Leopard, now running OSX Lion.  I did a Time Machine backup prior to everything and also bought an enclosure for my old hard disk to use and it has yet to be wiped, but Disk Utility says that it's corrupt because 1 program's debug log says the number of files changed (after the time machine processing.) I did a Carbon Copy Clone prior to installing the hard drive as well, so when all was done, I was able to start the computer without issue.  (This program is what told me first that I had an issue with that debug log.  I'd tried to delete a huge folder that was taking up nearly 30GB before the clone, it was backed up on time machine and another backup drive.)
However, after Vuze re-opened (which I'd just recently upgraded to Pro) it froze the computer, so I got the rainbow disk and even Force Quit did not work.  Since then, I've had to reboot with the top right button dozens of times.  Mail, Chrome and Vuze have all caused freezing and Command Option Escape does not work at all.  My beloved computer is starting to feel like a big brick.  I uninstalled and re-installed Vuze Plus since, but still have the same issues (trashing the program then re-downloading).  As for Disk Utility, it says the drive is just fine.  There are no software updates needed and that's about as far as I can get before things crash again.
I would really appreciate any assistance that can be provided based on this scenario.  I hope I've provided enough detail, please let me know if more is needed.
    Thank you in advance.

The only thing that I can think of is that your SATA cable may be bad... it's the first thing that I would try replacing. DIsk Utility wouldn't be able to detect a bad SATA cable - you'd just have random freezes and crashes.
I don't know that this is the solution to your problem, but it's the first thing I would attempt. 2009 models are notorious for having bad SATA cables - try PowerbookMedic and order a new one. If it doesn't fix the problem, call back.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Photoshop freezes after new installation.

I have a PC with windows 7. I have had photoshop on here for a year or so with no problems. I recently reformatted my PC and now for some reason when I open photoshop after it has finished installing, the grey window opens and just freezes. ive tried reinstalling 10 times and it does the same thing every time. I dont understand what could be different now than before.. maybe some kind of windows update? Either way I really need get this fixed and get back to work!

I found another thread with the same problem and the guy figured out that he needed to update the licensing EUA. i downloaded it but i dont know how to "install" it ha
Problem finally solved!  Someone figured out the problem and pointed me at:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/licensing_download_eula.html
That is a command-line utility that updates the FLEXnet licensing service to the latest and greatest version.  Updating it fixed my problem.  I was finally able to start Photoshop and got the product activation screen.  I was also able to successfully activate the product.
The tool itself is kind of cheesy and is command-line driven, but as long as it works I could care less.  Appears to be written in Python."""

  • Macbook pro still freezing after insurance repair, please help me

Hi there I got water damage on my 2012 MacBook pro, and my insurance covered it, so I got the logic board, adapter and keyboard  replaced. When it returned the computer kept freezing on start-up and I have to turn it off at the power button every time! Sometimes I can login and boot up
but it will randomly freeze at any point.
I sent it back to the insurance company who repaired it and they came back to me saying the technicians were unable to diagnose it
and that all the hardware had been checked and is running fine, so they told me to contact my supplier because its the software
that is at fault, however I didn't have these problems before I damaged my MacBook.
Could it be the software or the hardware, they are both sending me on a goose chase between them and I have a dissertation to do for September!
Please if anyone knows something that I can do to repair it, I have done disk utilities and that's coming up clean.
    Thanks Sloth

Thank you Csound1 for the reply, No I haven't I will try this later!
I asked because there are so many other people who ask questions for help on Apple discussions, and there is always lots
of helpful replies, and I only expected some advice on what I could do to resolve the issue if it is indeed a software problem, as there are lots of knowledgeable people on here, because the technicians at the repair company have no solution.

I was given Adobe After Effects as a Christmas gift, in a box with 3 dvds, two of which are tutorial/tips discs. When putting in the dvd and starting the installer, it pops up "Installation Failed - contact your product manager"

  • Multiple clean installation failures-HELP!

Keep getting error message "there were errors installing software. Please try again" in the middle of clean installation.
Have disconnected all peripherals and used disk utility and Norton to check disk. Disk OK. Recently added 256K RAM to facilitate installation. Have no way of checking whether this RAM is the problem (ie, on another MAC) unless there is another way.
Is there anything else I should try to facilitate installation? Thank you!!

It is possible the hard disk you are installing to is damaged, or that the installer disks you are installing from are damaged. Try replacing the hard drive first, and then if that doesn't work, get replacement installation disks.
Note, you can only install newer retail installation disks, or the original disks which came with that Mac. You can't use the installation disks which came with another Mac. Norton's repairs should not be attempted on any system 8.1 or higher. It is like playing Russian Roulette with your data. Some have no trouble with it, but others have significant issues which happen. Only using the proper version of Disk Utility, Alsoft Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Mac OS X 10.4), or Techtool Pro (4.0.5 or later for Mac OS X 10.4) will repair the directory of those systems. Your best thing to do before installing or repairing anything is back up your data:

    i tried reset button using

but it still wont work and the last object stays.
Hmm i have 4 games with the same codes, the names of object were the same at the beginning using pp1 til pp5 or pp10 but i changed everyone of them to pp dd qq gg so having directory problem isn't the case. • MacBook freezes after memory installation

I have a 2006 13-inch MacBook. I recently upgraded its operating system to OS X 10.5.8 and yesterday I installed 2 new memory modules of 1GB each to reach the maximum 2GB memory. Last night and today upon trying to start the computer by pushing the power button I got a repeat sound like the computer was trying to start (like an engine turning over) but it didn't start up until something I did finally turned it on (I'm not sure what). Today the problem repeated itself. I finally got it to turn on by pushing the power, option, command, and P and R keys simultaneously (a suggestion in the user's guide) and that seemed to work, but I'm afraid this is going to happen every time I try to turn the computer on. The battery is fully charged, too.  Any ideas? Thanks!

I'd suspect those RAM cards, make sure they are fully pushed home, they can need considerable force depending on the manufacturer. If that doesn't work you may have to get some alternatives, BTW what RAM manufacturer did you use?

  • Progress Bar freeze after 4.2.1 Update - any news?

    Hey Guys,
any news on the progress par freeze after the installation of 4.2.1 on the iPad?
After a horrible 8 hours(!) Backup phase, my iPad 3G 32 Gigabyte freezes after the progress bar reaches 80%. I tried to do a hard reset but it would just stuck at the same stage again after rebooting. My iPhone 4 synced just fine (5min. Backup-Phase to the max) and runs 4.2.1 without any hiccups. But the iPad, being once the love of my life, drives me MAD!!!!!
What did you do? Try to sync it again or just wait some days until the progress bar advances? I`m fed up with OS Updates for now... HEEEELLLLPPP!

Well, that didn't work. But in the process I cleaned up the folders that house my iTunes movies and music get rid of dupes, stuff I didn't want, and so on. However, I did find that I forgot to uninstall WiFi Sync before trying the upgrade. I downloaded the uninstaller and ran it, rebooted, and did the upgrade. Now my iPad is back. I hadn't realized that I had to uninstall WiFi Sync to upgrade the iPad.....

  • I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]
    Macbook Pro

Graphics:  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

  • Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro

Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro.
It started with Photoshop, then Safari, and now the Kinect sensor.
Mavericks is the worse thing that happened to me I have a thesis project to work on!
    What can I do?
How can I remove Mavericks and go back to Mountain Lion?
    Thanks

    Hey StephSassine,
First, I would run through these steps:
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk:
    Increase disk space
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10677
If that doesn't work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility:
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure you have the latest version of Mac OS X.
Software updates sometimes change a file’s permissions to improve security, so updating your software can solve some permissions problems.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk you want to check.
    Click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
via: Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5821
If that doesn't help resolve the issue, you can revert to a previous OS X version:
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14176
    Sincerely,
    Delgadoh
