Fresh install - terminal acting strange?

hey all,
i think this is a pretty basic issue.
just did a fresh install of 10.6 server. when i open up terminal, it doesn't open to a bash shell, instead, it just prompts me for a password (in the command line, not a dialog box) and when i authenticate, it tells me my last login, says [process completed], and does not let me type anything else.
any idea what is going on?!

i dont know why, but the combo update to 10.6.3 fixed it.

You're going to have to tell us why you think this is strange. Are you having problems? If so, what kinds of problems?
Note that this is NOT a fresh install of Mountain Lion, as I see Little Snitch (at least) in your process list.

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok),  and a fresh clean  install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its  related to overheating ?
iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C,  Fan rpms is around 1000
    Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • Macbook acting wierd even after fresh install of OS

i've got a 13" macbook i've had for a couple of years. i've had no problems with it until about a month ago when it started acting weird. it was becoming very slow and crashed regularly when i tried to run simple applications like itunes or safari. even when i tried to shut it down, it sometimes gave me that message on the screen where it informes you to hold down the power button to shut down.
i decided to do a complete re-install of my osx to give it a fresh start. so having re-installed leopard, and with nothing on my hard drive apart from the pro tools and cubase programs i've re-installed (it won't be these as they're both legit programs that i've been using on this mac for 2 years), it still seems to crash and not shut down properly.
i've actually done another clean re-install a couple of days ago to see if this made a difference, but sti ll the same problems.
i was under the impression that any viruses or bugs that we're making my mac act weird would have been wiped when i done a fresh install of my os.
can anyone tell me where i'm going wrong?
    thanks

    It's not a virus.
The screen you see (that requests you to restart your computer) is referred to as a kernel panic; these are often hardware-related.
What you're describing sounds like a possible hard drive failure.
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? Is your computer still under warranty?
Get your data backed up, if you haven't already, just in case!

  • Why is Mavericks running so slowly after a fresh install on my Macbook Pro?

    I have a 13-inch, Early 2011 Macbook Pro.
Towards the end of 2013 Mountain Lion had been running very sluggishly, and I was getting the spinning beachball of death all the time, so I decided to do a fresh install of Mavericks. I wiped my whole HD using disk utility and installed Mavericks from a flash drive.
I then installed Microsoft Office 2011 from the original DVD and set up Mac Mail to work with my Gmail account etc. All very standard. I also installed X-Code and various other things related to my work, but nothing crazy. My HD is only half-full (I have 141 GB of free space).
Despite this, everything is running really sluggishly (especially when MS Office programs are open) and I have to watch the beachball of death spin for about 10 seconds every minute.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Messaging Server won't start up, or acts strangely

One of the config files has disappeared, or the Messaging Server
    is acting "strangely".
    <P>
Because of bugs in the Berkeley DB code, it is possible for a configuration
file to become corrupted. The Messaging Server will remove a severly
corrupted config file, but there is a threshold of corruption that may
impact server operation and may not cause files to be deleted.
    <P>
If you notice that one of the config files is gone (your server won't start),
or that your server is acting strangely, DO NOT REPLACE IT WITH A BACKUP COPY.
This will most likely re-introduce the corruption. Instead, make note of
all the configuration changes you've made with the Messaging Server admin gui.
The easiest way to do this is to print out each page. Then replace the
config file with a clean one from the install directory or from the media.
    <P>
Before re-starting the server, check each admin gui page to make sure it
matches your printout, and make any necessary changes. Then start the server.
    <P>
The installed configuration files are located in the message spool area,
by default: /var/spool/postoffice/config and they are:<BR>
    <P>
    Account-Handler<BR>
    Account-Manager<BR>
    AutoReply-Handler<BR>
    Configuration-Manager<BR>
    Dispatch<BR>
    Error-Handler<BR>
    Finger-Server<BR>
    IMAP4-Server<BR>
    MTA-Accounts<BR>
    Mailbox-Deliver<BR>
    POP3-Server<BR>
    Program-Deliver<BR>
    SMTP-Accept<BR>
    SMTP-Deliver<BR>
    SMTP-Router<BR>
    UNIX-Deliver<BR>
    <P>
Un-configured copies of all these files may be found under the directory
    you installed the server at:
    <P>
    /install/server/data<BR>
    <P>
The fresh files will all have a .install appended to them.

Shut the computer dow, remove the power cord and all peripherals, wait for 30 seconds, replace the power cod and press the start button at the same time.
If you do not have the iSight, try the steps in [this|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908] Apple article.

  • ITunes will not work on Fresh INstall of Vista x64 SP1

I have a strange issue. I have a Windows Vista x64 with SP1 (Yes the DVD is a production DVD from Microsoft not a slip stream copy.) and I wanted to do a fresh install of Vista with SP1. Reinstalled OS and everything is running great but iTunes. When I start iTunes I get this error message about "mssip32.dll" being damaged or corrupt please reinstall the app. So I looked around good old Google and apple.com. I found several fixes about re-registering a set of dll files. So did them all, no change. Reinstalled Vista from scratch again, no change. So for the heck of it I reinstalled Vista with no SP1 installed and then applied SP1 and it works fine. I reinstalled Vista with SP1 and have been running it for over a week and everything on the system is tested and solid as a rock with no issues. The only program that will not work is iTunes. I have also tried all the way back to version 7.4 and no luck.
    Any ideas on this?

  • Fresh Install of iTunes and some Questions

I just did a fresh install, set up home sharing, and did an iCloud match so my whole library is in the cloud.  I have my library file stored locally but my music files on my NAS.  Here are my questions:
    1.  I want to install iTunes on my wifes computer, set up iTunes match for her, set up shaing.  She will have a "shell" setup where notjing is stored as she is sharing with me and accessing the cloud.  Do I need to set up that computer under my user id even though she has her own?  I figure thats the only way to get her to iTunes match that I have?
    2.  How do I do this all?  Meaning, I will have a local library file for her but I need to point her laptop to the NAS with the files on them.  If I change her iTunes media file to that location on the NAS and check keep organized, will it screw up the files I have there?  I noticed when I did that on my PC it moved some fles around and I had to reassociate lost files to songs.  Took hurs.  Would iTunes have done that automatically for me somehow?  Should I not check the keep organized for her as she will not be adding music anyhow?  What is the harm either way?
    3.  How do I see my pictures on my ATV unit?  I thought I used to be able to but don't see an "app" on the ATV to do so, just photo stream which I do not want to do.  I thought I used to be able to access the pictures stored on my NAS?  Am I dreaming this or did it go away?  My NAS is an iTunes server and I swear I used to be able to access them from my ATV?    All I see on my ATV under my library is music, podcasts and movies.
    4.  I have my NAS sharing (home sharing) and I can see it on my laptop with iTuenes installed.  When I click on it I see only music, no movies or anything else, why is that and is it something to do with home sharing?  But, like I said I can see thse movies on ATV under my library.  I can also see my playlists on the shared on my laptop but nothing is in them.  I think that may be becuase they were set up under another library and now that I hve a new library file, they don't carry over?  I don't see any of said playlists in the sttandard iTunes interface under playlists, just under the shared however like I said, no files in them.  Also, the share comes and goes as in sometimes I see it sometimes I don't however I am always able to access the NAS from iTunes.  Strange, may be network issues?
    5.  Along those same lines, sometimes the home share just up and dissapears from ATV.  Maybe a network issue?
    6.  Lastly, I just did my first backup/sync to my new laptop with the frsh install of iTunes on it.  It gave me some sort of message that I can only sync to one computer and do I want to overwrite or whatever?  I said no and it did nothing.  After that, I did a back-up however it seemed to go fast and I also did a sunc.  The sync was three steps, used to be like six and I did not notice any of my new apps being copied to it.  Something is wrong here but not sure what to do, ideas?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

#4 - make sure you are sharing out all the items in your itunes library (music, movies, etc)
you should be able to do that under preferences
you may also want to check if it is pointing to the correct library
#1 - home sharing should work on the LAN w/out the need for signing in; the shared libraries should appear under "shared" in the left sidebar of itunes
think this may resolve the issues you have on #2 as well
#2 - itunes doesnt seem like it's built for that, but if you have any experience, i'd like to hear it.  this seems why home sharing is the usually the best route to go and just have one instance of itunes managing the library
but as long as the NAS or any media drives are shared out, connecting to it should not be a problem.  it's the writing to the itunes library that's the issue.  i haven't used Match so can't help there.
depending on your OS, you can either ctrl-click or option-click on the itunes icon,
which will also give you the option of selecting a library location upon launching itunes
you can navigate to the location of the library file and point it to that.
technically, you could do that but i believe the actual library has to be stored locally
as long as you still have all the media, then you can just rebuild the library
but for locally shared items, as in, all inside the home, i would leave icloud out of the equation
just use itunes sharing and it should be fine

  • Can't login after fresh installing gnome using gdm 3.2 [SOLVED]

I don't know if this topic was already solved, I hope someone can help me about this. I have a fresh install of arch linux (just yesterday) and installed gnome and gnome-extra packages. As usual, I go with the procedure of editing my .xinitrc (exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session), rc.conf (...dbus networkmanager...), inittab (runlvl 5, x:5......gdm). After a reboot, gdm screen appeared, I can't find my account, then there were two choices, "Sign in" and "Not listed..."). I clicked Not listed, then entered my user and password, after that, it responded: Authentication failure/failed... or something like that. I tried it again and it's the same. Temporarily, I'm using startx or slim (depends on my mood). Can anyone help me?
    here's my gdm's 0.log and 0-greeter.log respectively:

when asked for uuid/uid?... I put 100. I thought any random number would do...
    look in /etc/pam.d/gdm-password
in arch and in general >= 1000 are  normal users, < 1000 system users
is that how it works? can i change it from 100 to 1000 or just make a new one?
    anyways i'll look to it.

  • IBook acting strange...erase and reinstalled...it's starting to be strange

My iBook was acting strangely...I can't connect to the wireless server, though ISP, network settings and Airport are all correct and the connection is visible and the strength of the connection will change. I cannot load any internet pages. In addition, my iDisk icon disappeared, then on restart, it reappeared, but I have no access to it. A "copy of previous iDisk" then appeared on my desktop with all of the contents, but I can't move them from this version as it says I do not have access. So, I started looking at the logs, to see what, if any, errors there were. I didn't have access to the security log and a few others - although I'm the only user account on this computer. Needless to say, I'm no expert so I "spotlighted" some of the things showing up in the logs. Spotlight returned articles on Apache and XTools (Xcode?) - neither of which I installed (I think Apache might come included). I looked and sure enough, XTools was on my hard drive with many, many files - most with the name or extension of pb or pbx. I started to dig a little deeper in the program and noticed some scripts in the vein of when user enters/types "xyz" initiate process or replace with "zyx", etc. I saved some of these files to the desktop, powered off and restarted. When I opened the desktop after the restart, all of the files were in the trash - not by my doing. I removed them and locked them to the desktop until I could figure out what happened. Then, they disappeared, my computer shut down and when I tried to restart, I couldn't get past the spinning gear.
I took this to the store, they checked it, said they could recognize a drive, that I should archive and reinstall. I did this, things still acted strangely. I called AppleCare, they said to back up everything and reinstall.
I did this, now am finding repairs are needed through disk utility for security and authorization priviledges. I repair, go back in a few hours, run it again, just to satisfy my curiosity and the same repairs are needed for disk permissions.
A friend has uttered the horrible "trojan horse" phrase to me...as I download regularly from LimeWire. I'm not sure what a next step would be to free the iBook of it's quirkiness.
Sorry for the long post...but it's been an eventful few days.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

You can ignore any permission repair that states "We are using special...". I'm not sure about Tiger but Panther has a few others that come up if the cron maintenance scripts have run.
Other than the repeating permission repairs, is it running OK now?

  • Fresh install keybinds stop responding [solved]

    Hi there,
I've recently been having some issues with Arch. I did a fresh install because I'm running on a chromebook and need as much space as possible only have a 14GB SSD at present until I get round to upgrading it.
I previously installed Arch (i386) with no such issues, but I've recently switched to i3 WM and x86_64 using this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … tion_media. Last week I also installed a custom chrome patch
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … .27_Script and everything was working fine with this. I did a fresh installion of Arch about an hour ago and I'm mentioning this because it allowed me to install Arch 64bit directly from the dual ISO without having to modify the ISO itself so I'm not sure if that's the issue considering the 32bit installation worked from the same ISO.
Now I have some strange issues. Keybinds work fine when I boot up but when I open urxvt it seems to stop all my binds working. Similarly the same issue happens when I run dmenu and open chrome. Sometimes I can open multiple instances of the aforementioned before it stops working. The mouse icon changes as if it's trying to load something, but nothing opens and absolutely no binds work.
I've tried other WM's and get the same issues with urxvt and dmenu.
I have searched google but can't seem to find any related issues so I'm at a loss as to where to begin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

It seems that the use of dmenu causes things to hang. I'll reboot and wait a few minutes and see if it automatically does it.
I have not modified any files since installation except enabling wicd and slim with systemctl and the modifications to .xinitrc.
Thanks for the information. I'll bear that in mind.
    Edit:
So I rebooted and left the system for five minutes. After that I ran dmenu using alt+d (as defined in i3 config). Dmenu would not open and changed the mousekey to the loading icon and no other bindings would work again.
So I believe that the issue is definitely with dmenu.
    Edit 2:
So a little bit more information on dmenu. I have installed it with every installation. My system is 64bit and I have enabled multilib. I installed it through pacman.
I'm going to disable multilib and re-install.
    Edit 3:
Same issue. Actually seems worse now.
    Edit 4:
I'm wondering if it could be due to this section of .i3/config?
    # start dmenu (a program launcher)
    bindsym $mod+d exec dmenu_run
    # There also is the (new) i3-dmenu-desktop which only displays applications
    # shipping a .desktop file. It is a wrapper around dmenu, so you need that
    # installed.
    # bindsym $mod+d exec --no-startup-id i3-dmenu-desktop
    Edit 5:
Okay so after some testing it seems to be i3. I've re-installed, using the i3-git package from AUR. I'm installing Yeganesh and I'll see now how this plays out.

  • 2007 iMac freezes up, rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve?

My circa 2007 iMac freezes up, and rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Most of the time I ONLY have 1 thing open at a time, and keep my tabs down to a minimum. I bought this to do film editing on but with it acting like this I cannot do that. I know I need a ram upgrade (currently running 2 gb) and my OS is old, 10.5.8, but I think even with it being a bit outdated it should run better than this. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve this? Or any other suggestions to keep this clunker chugging along for a little while longer?

How full is the hard drive?
Do you run any virus software or hard drive "cleaner" software like MacKeeper?
If your model is from 2007 you can install up to 6 GBs of RAM.
2 GBs is the barest of minimum RAM for OS X to run on.
Especially if doing video work. You simply do not have sufficient RAM.
Also OS X 10.5.8 Leopard support ended around 2009.
You could update to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, at least.
It is available on disc from the Apple store for U.S. $19.99.
I Would seriously upgrade your iMac's RAM to the max. 6 GBs before doing this.
Reliable Mac RAM can be purchase from online Mac RAM source Crucial memory or OWC ( also known as macsales).

  • Macbook Pro stuck in restart loop with fresh install

    Hello!
I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2009) that I have been running Snow Leopard on up until now. I had been meaning to upgrade to Mavericks for a while, but had just never gotten around to it. Over the last month or so, my Macbook has been running really slow, hanging on the spinning beachball every few minutes for a few seconds (sometimes up to a minute or so). So I figured a clean start might be the best way to go, and while I'm at it, I might as well upgrade to Mavericks.
I backed up all my data, and then I created a Mountain Lion bootable usb (I had trouble making a Mavericks bootable usb from Snow Leopard, and since I had bought Mountain Lion for my desktop, I just decided to do a fresh install of that, and then upgrade to Mavericks). I had no problem booting to the usb, erased my hard drive and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion. However, after the install on the usb, my mac restarted and got stuck in a restart loop. It will chime, show the apple logo and spinning gears for a few seconds, then the gears stop spinning, and then the mac immediately restarts (this time displaying a message saying the mac has recovered from a shutdown in a number of languages), and the same thing happens again.
I was able to boot into the recovery partition, checked the permissions, found some that needed to be fixed, ran the repair permissions, verified the disk and was told the disk appears okay. Tried to then restart and same thing.
I have reset SMC, NVRAM, and none of these change anything. I booted in single user mode and ran fsck -fy, and recieved a message saying modifications were made, rebooted, same thing.
I have booted in verbose mode and the system restarts at the same point every time, right after displaying a message that says
SMC::smcReadKeyAction Error: (and then something with "BEMB", it goes by really fast so its hard to read exactly)
I have managed to boot into safe mode, but this has not made a difference. On one of my boots into safe mode, I went ahead and made a Mavericks bootable usb, and restarted the process: wiped the drive, installed mavericks, but I am in the exact same situation. I can still boot into safe mode.
I have seen some other issues that people have posted, but most involve the system freezing after the apple screen (not restarting) or do not involve freshly formatted HDs.
I'm just tying to find out if this is a hard drive issue, or if my mac itself needs to be retired. It has had a pretty long life (being 5 years old), and one of the RAM bays doesn't work (it is only running 4GB of ram, not sure if that can cause a problem with the boot cycle).
Sorry if thats a lot of information, I've been trouble shooting this for a few days. But thanks for any help you can offer!
    A strange note:
-when booting from the mavericks usb, I got stuck in the restart loop a couple of times. I managed to get past this by clicking the mousepad a few times right after the gears finished spinning. The mouse became visible, the apple screen shifted color a bit (went from a bluish gray tint to an orangish gray tint), the mouse became visible, and I got to the reinstall menu as normal. As far as I can tell the clicking may have been coincidental, but it was the only time I was able to boot the usb, and I wasn't going to risk restarting to test that, and then not be able to boot again.

Hey, thank you for your reply! I didn't have everything backed up, but I have a lot of my important stuff saved, though, so that's somewhat of a relief..
As far as my hard drive is concerned, would I have to send it in somewhere to get it fixed or would I just have to get a brand new one? If so, how much? Sorry if I seem a bit amateur, but this computer is my first personal computer, and I'm really lost without it!

  • Solaris 10u6 fresh install - can't get Solaris Management Console working

    Hey guys,
I have been searching all over but can't seem to find any help on getting SMC working. I have a fresh install of Solaris 10u6 on a Sun Fire V20z.
So I login via ssh to the solaris machine ("unknown"), and It looks like wbem is online:
    root@unknown:/# svcs wbem
    STATE          STIME    FMRI
    online         16:37:50 svc:/application/management/wbem:default
root@unknown:/# And netstat shows that my machine is listening on port 898
    root@unknown:/# netstat -an|grep 898
    127.0.0.1.898              *.*                0      0 49152      0 LISTEN
    root@unknown:/# The problem is
    1)
When I try to do anything in the smc launched with as
smt -toption for terminal mode, I always end up getting the message:
There is no Solaris Management Console Server running on localhost.2)
If I login from my laptop with X11 forwarding on, and launch the graphical interface, it does come up with the main window that says "Solaris Management Console 2.1" and the "Open Toolbox" window. However, in the Open Toolbox window it says "Server Not Running"
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, since svcs says that wbem is running... I'm pretty new to Solaris, working hard to get up to speed, so I'd really appreciate any help you guys could offer.
    Thanks,
    Jamie

For some reason it was able to run once by running the command
    # /etc/init.d/init.wbem start
But no matter what I do, I can't get it to work one lick with
    # svcadm enable wbem
    Any ideas guys?

  • Mail in Snow Leopard (starting from scratch, fresh install, POP gone?)

Where is a good manual/FAQ/Help file that explains how to setup POP gmail accounts in the new Mail in 10.6??
Did a fresh install on a new machine, and can't for the life of me figure out how to set it up (keeps selecting IMAP by default, no matter what I do, then when I setup a POP account it just sits there).
How come it worked in 10.3, 10.4, and in 10.5 then in 10.6 it just acts all goofy and won't connect? Is this the definition of 'snappier'? I think so, because I'm about to.
    Thanks.

Like you I did a fresh install and when setting up my gmail accounts found the only available option of setup to be IMAP. I found the fix to this ANNOYING ISSUE.
Basically the auto-setup assistant that automatically starts in Mail w/ snow leopard looks to see if you enter "gmail.com" as your selected service and AUTOMATICALLY configures it to use IMAP instead of POP.
Now I have tried going in and disabling IMAP and entering all the correct POP settings after the wizard completes setup but I could never get a functioning connection.
The solution is to click the + sign to add an account but instead of butting "@gmail.com" change your address to "@yahoo.com". Type in the correct password and click continue. It will attempt to check the connection but will fail, click continue anyway.
From here you will have to change the POP settings from the defaults for yahoo to those of gmail. Remember those are pop.gmail.com; username is your ENTIRE email address. Ensure everything is right and click continue.
Again change the SMTP setting from those of yahoo to those of gmail's. Remember smtp.gmail.com!
Click continue and finish the setup. Once the account is setup you will have to change your address from @yahoo.com to @gmail.com and you are finished. Your account should connect and work just like it always did.
