Frozen Clock, loss of sound with Tascam US-122

I have been using my Tascam US-122 soundcard with my 1.25 gHz 15' Aluminum PowerBook with no problems for about the past year. I have it hooked up to the USB port on the right side of my computer, and it derives its power via USB (it is a USB 1.1 device). Suddenly, starting about a month ago (or so), I have noticed that the clock on the toolbar has been freezing sporadically, at which time I lose sound through the sound card. The SPD also appears when I move the cursor over the clock. After some investigation, I found that the clock returns to normal when I unplug the US-122 and the SPD disappears. But when I plug the US-122 back in, I get nothing (no power even). At this time, if I plug the US-122 into the other USB port, it works fine. In addittion, even when the US-122 won't work on the right port after being unplugged, I can plug in another USB device that will work just fine in that port. If I restart the computer, the US-122 will work again, but eventually the problem reoccurs. The problem seems to happen more often when the computer has been in sleep mode, but it is not consistently so.
I don't know if this problem has something to do with updates to OSX or with the US-122 or with the right USB port, which is also the USB 2.0 port. Is anybody else having similar problems? Can anybody help?
Thanks,
Will.

It turns out that I was wrong about one thing, once the USB port on the right side of my computer stops working for the US-122, it seems to shut down until I restart the computer. I thought that it worked after the US-122 went down and was unplugged because another device will receive power from the port when plugged in. It turns out that although the new device will power up, it won't be recognized by the computer. I appreciate any help or ideas. Thanks.
---Will.

  • Logic Express 9 running with Tascam US-122 - possible?

    Hello,
    I've been scouring support forums and the Logic user manual all day and unfortunately cannot seem to find an answer to this:
    Is it at all possible to run Logic Express 9 with the Tascam US-122?
    I've just converted from PC to Mac in the last couple of weeks: all of my software and drivers are all up-to-date so that should not be an issue. Obviously that means that I've previously been using my Tascam with Cubase on the PC, and I was really hoping it would cope with Logic too. The problem is that Logic does recognize the Tascam but when it comes to recording, I can't get it to work. Apparently it's something to do with the sample rate?
    Please help - if it can be avoided, I don't want to have to buy another device. Any advice or answers would be very much appreciated!
    Thank you.

    It sounds like you have the same setup as us.
    I (oops, wife) has a brand new iMac, a Tascam US-122L and a Yamaha KX8 controller. She started with GarageBand, then bought Logic Express 9 and just yesterday we ordered the upgrade to Logic Studio.
    Like any new computer setup of course nothing worked right away.
    She plugs her guitar into the Tascam but it didn't work until we changed to Input 2 in Logic (or was it GarageBand, sorry I am getting them confused).
    Anyway, my point is that you should not need any more hardware to make it work. We have yet to plug a mike into the Tascam...that will be the fun for the weekend....lol
    Good luck,
    Paul

  • 'Invisible' latency problem with Tascam US-122 mkii audio interface

    Firstly, thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer, secondly I'm very new to Logic and troubleshooting DAWs, and thirdly this sort of thing is really difficult to describe. So, here goes:
    I'm using a late 2007 macbook with a 2.2Ghz intel core 2 duo and 2GB ram with Logic Pro 9. My audio interface is a Tascam US-122 mkii.
    The reported latency I should be experiencing is far less than what I can hear. That is, if I record a part through the Tascam, through guitar line in or by a microphone, when I then go to playback the track the recorded track is VERY misaligned with the rest of the song. It's usually by about a third of second- I can match them up with a mouse drag but that's only for very simple parts, e.g 1/4 notes or something. Logic isn't compensating for any latency between the interface and Logic. Is there any way to fix this? I suspect this might be something to do with the drivers for the Tascam, rather than Logic....or is it that the mac's spec is too low? If I got another audio interface, such as the Apogee One, would that be more 'plug and play' in giving me less issues with simply trying to get a recorded part appear where it should do? I've tried experimenting with the drivers (I'm currently using the one recommended by tascam) and by changing the I/O buffer size.
    One other weird problem is that if I set the output and input in logic for the Tascam, I end up with really bad CPU spikes. Practically a full bar. But if I set it to the input only from the tascam, and use the default output with logic, no CPU spikes. The latency/alignment problem is basically unaffected by this.
    Here's an excerpt from an email I sent to Tascam support, which sets the problem out in a slightly different way.
    "In logic, when I have both the output and the input through tascam, obviously the recommended setting, it doesn't say there is much latency but there are all sorts of CPU spikes. Even though it says there isn't too much latency (i think about 15ms, which is more than i'd prefer), there is a large delay when playing back a recorded track. Basically, the tracks are misaligned about by a third of a second.  On top of this, and I don't know if this indicates anything, but when I use the tascam as both input and output I can't access the lower I/O buffer settings in logic, i.e 32 or 64, as there's a lot of white noise. I was under the impression using lower I/O buffer settings might help, but....
    When I set the output to the default device (macbook sound output) and take my input from the tascam, there's still a large delay. Logic reports the latency as being lower than before by about 6 ms, but upon playing back a recorded sound there really isn't any difference- we're still looking at about a third to half a second misalignment between the tracks.  However, strangely, with the default output and tascam as input, the macbook can happily get down to an I/O buffer size of 32 in logic while using low latency mode, but as I say this hasn't helped the problem at all.
    So, despite getting lowish reported latency, I'm getting a MASSIVE delay between a track I've recorded and where it should be, that is, about 1/3 to half a second later. "
    Anyway, thanks again to anyone who has any suggestions. I've tried as much as I can think of and have had a good look in the manual and a look around these forums, but since I can't really figure out what the problem exactly is it's proving hard- so apologies if it's something really obvious.
    Thanks to anyone who helps, I know it might not be very interesting since Logic 10 just came out......
    Mike

    Actually, at long last and thinking about it differently, I've sort of sorted out my own problem- the 'delay' or 'invisible latency' was caused by using the tascam as input and the macbook as output. But I'm still getting massive CPU spikes and can see a lot of crashes incoming....is that because of a poor driver, or because of a poor macbook? Would something like the apogee one be less of a CPU hog?

  • Garageband not working with tascam us-122

    hi,
    i try to use my tascam us-122 on my macbook pro (intel) with the latest tascam driver 3.4.0 (universal binary released in april 2006) with garageband
    but even a simple playback of a simple song only works for lets say five seconds, than its game over
    neither apple or tascam responds to my e-mails en the support desk of apple in holland has not got a clue
    anyone who can help me, what should i do next?

    Hi Perry Winkel,
    I just got the US-122L today and my imac a couple of weeks ago. Im trying to record my keyboard (Korg TR) into garageband. Im am extremely new to this but I have tried everything that the manuals are telling me but when I try to record a 'real instrument' and turn my moniter to 'on' - all I hear is this weird sound, similar to the screaching of a microphone.
    1) I installed all the software from my keyboard and from the US-122L
    2) I have a MIDI chord going from the 'out' on my keyboard to the 'in' on my US-122L.
    3) My USB cable is connected to the back of my IMAC - not on the keyboard.
    4) I went into applications/utilities/audio midi setup and I switched my 'default input' and my 'properties' to the US-122L. Im not sure if I was supposed to do that but I have been on this for over 5 hours now and I am trying anything.
    Can you help me?!
    Can ANYONE help me?!?!

  • Logic express 7.2.1 with Tascam US-122 issue

    Im running Mac OS X 10.4.7 on a Powerbook 1.67 Ghz PowerPC G4 with 512 in RAM. My software is Logic Express 7.2.1.
    I've installed the latest drivers to my USB external audio device Tascam US-122: 3.4.0 found on Tascam's website.
    Here is the problem: I need to use sample rates (I/O buffer size) 512 or 1024 otherwise it starts to "crackle" and telling "system overload". With my new latop it should run on 64 or even 32.
    - Any help what the problem is?
    I have tried both re-installing logic express and us-122 drivers.

    Hi Niili,
    I have the same problem with a digi drivers too,
    I didn't have a clue on how to to deal with iet,
    you wanna laght?
    When I use Protools Le, I can have lower buffers without problem,
    not with logic!
    It problably have to do with the drivers.

  • Help with Tascam US-122 and recording in GB

    Hello,
    Frustrated as usual with hooking stuff up/installing properly (as far as I know) and not being able to get it to work. I have a condenser mic with its own power supply hooked up to a Tascam US-122 and going into my Powerbook G4. When I try to record into GB, I get NO audio signal levels even though I get the signal light flashing on the US-122. Recording using the built-in audio works fine but when I switch the input to the Tascam, NOTHING!!!
    Help?

  • Loss of sound with the Gigaworks S750 system

    Hi,
    I just recently purchased a Gigaworks S750 speaker system and I ran into a problem. Every-so-often, randomly, my entire system will just stop playing any sound. This last for a random amount of time (5 second to 30 mins). I've triple checked the wires and even taken the system down and re-set it up. I know it'ss not the sound card (recently purchased Audigy 2 ZS) and it'ss not the drivers (updated them many times). I know it'ss a problem with the speaker system itself as I split the signal from my soundcard out to both my headphones and my speakers and my headphones continue to work during the outages. When I plug my headphones into the jack on the control unit of the S750 during an outage, the sound plays through them. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Riley

  • Loss of sound during calls following updating iphone 4 with IOS5

    I've recently updated my Iphone 4 with the IOS5 update.  Since then I've had terrible problems with loss of sound on phonecalls.  I can hear others but they cant hear me  - loss of sound is patchy during a call.  I've cleaned mic with a soft brush and rebooted but problem still exists.  Any ideas before I restore factory settings/ and or take back to the shop?

    I have a Iphone 4 and when i try to make calls, i cannot hear anything unless i put it on speaker, and sometimes if i try to turn the call volume up during a call without the speaker it almost sounds like the speaker is blown out. I just bought this phone online 2 days ago so i don't understand how that could happen.
    Is anyone having this problem? I'm am totally lost with what to do other than return the phone in and see if i can get another one?

  • Sync Sound with Clock?

    Hello,
    Basically I have this analogue clock all set up and working but I can't for the life of me figure out how to make a sound since with rotation
    Here's the code I am using for the rotation:
    var date:Date;
    addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, refreshHour);
    function refreshHour (event:Event):void{
      date = new Date();
      hour_mc.rotation = date.getHours()*30 + (date.getMinutes()/2);
      minute_mc.rotation = date.getMinutes()*6 + (date.getSeconds()/10);
      second_mc.rotation = date.getSeconds()*6 + (date.getMilliseconds()/(1000/6));
    I am pretty much a complete beginner to AS3 so you might need to be precise when explaining things
    Thanks in advance
    Leon

    I always like to leave a little homework for you. You know that every time the function runs the clock will be updated with the latest calculation. Although a Timer will initially wait the amount of delay you configure before firing off the function that sets the clock. So you should immediately call that function so the clock is set from the start, sending a dummy timer event.
    e.g.:
    handleTimer(new TimerEvent(TimerEvent.TIMER));
    That will force the clock into position as soon as you run it.
    As for counting seconds, you should make a new variable appropriately named, secondsUntilSound (or whatever you like). Since you always want it every 12 seconds no matter what the current time is, it'd be something like:
    // in state
    var secondsUntilSound:int = 12;
    // ... in configuring the delay, setting to 1000ms
    var clockTimer:Timer = new Timer(1000,0); // 1000ms = 1 second, repeat infinite
    // ... in the handleTimer() function
    if (secondsUntilSound-- <= 0)
         // 12 seconds went by, reset number of seconds
         secondsUntilSound = 12
         // play sound
         snd.play();
    It's just doing the same thing the minute variable was, remembering 'state'. If you only want it to go off on every 12 seconds starting at zero (e.g. 0, 12, 24, 36, 48...) then you can adjust the logic to suit you, but that's your homework to try.

  • Hello my Mac Air is frozen on the grey screen (with the apple symbol, sleeping mode, restart-and off button), once you turn it on.

    hello my Mac Air is frozen on the grey screen (with the apple symbol, sleeping mode, restart-and off button), once you turn it on. I Can`t press any button.My Mouse still works. Battery is charged. Alt-cmd-escape doesn`t work It even after a forced shutting off, the problem is the same.   what should i do? Thank you for your help.

    Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
    There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
    Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
    Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
    If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
    If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
    Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
    Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
    This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
    Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
    Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 8
    This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. The battery is distinct from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
    If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • Loss Of Sound Sync - FC7

    Hi Gang
    Working with FC7 in Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and an older Mac Pro.
    Exported a 70 minute clip and noticed loss of Sound Sync, (about mid way thru in a QT File). The clip is a mixture of assorted clips.
    Divided the 70 minute clip into 3 separate exported clips which produced proper 'Synced Sound' in each clip.
    This problem used to occasionally happen in FC6  - Does anyone know a fix or work-around?
    Thank You

    Hi,
    Operating System:  Windows Vista
    Sound Driver :         Conextant High Definition Smart Audio 221 (SPDIF INTERFACE)
    Other Programmes: I Tunes
    Problem :     Sudden loss of sound, I have tried the obvious such as is the touch sensitive mute switched off and the volumes switched on . I did briefly have my i-touch connected via USB but don't remember doing anything other than connecting and disconnecting the USB cable. Then there was no sound. I have also tried via control panel testing the devices and the speaker test works correctly but other than this I am unable to get any sound from the laptop. I did find, although I can't remember where, next to a  I-tunes file name  yellow triangles but was unabe to delete. This will probably be a very obvious and simple solution! but I would greatly appreciate any help!    many thanks

    This often occurs when you plug in an HDMI device, on my machine.  Try manually setting the playback device:
    Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar.
    Select Playback Devices.
    Right-click the audio device you want (i.e. Speakers)
    Select Set as default device.
    If this does not work, try logging in with an account that has administrative access.  I discovered the wireless network can not be enabled by a non-administrative account, when it is disabled while logged in as an administrator.  You have to go back to the admin account, enable wireless, and then log back to the other account.
    Avoid updating your driver, unless the device no longer functions.
