FYI For Everyone Fixing their Thermal Grease

If you "fix" the thermal grease .. umm... abundance yourself, per AppleCare you void your warranty.
So if your cutting tape/removing noticable ammounts of paste, yes you warranty technically no longer exists.
HOWEVER, you can open up your MacMini and upgrade ram, HDD, etc. and they are cool with that.
Why I don't really know. It's a shame too, because I have my whole little set of tools and ArcticSilver 5 plus cleaner and solvent ready to go. Perhaps if everyone sends in the MBP for repair on this issue they will allow individuals to fix their own machines to reduce the load? Doubtfull.

Golan, the thermal grease DOES have functionality, as do the fans and other components making up the computer. The functionality of the thermal grease has to do with management of heat, and hence with the reliability of other components in the computer.
Apple has documented specifications for the thermal grease material and application. User modification of those specifications without approval by Apple do, in my opinion, obviously provide grounds for Apple to refuse warranty coverage of the affected components (which could extend to many components in the computer whose reliability could be related to temperature).
I've seen a number of opinions on this forum that the thermal grease used by Apple is inferior, and/or that the application procedure is inferior. Those remain opinions, regardless of the poster's qualifications. For the warranty provisions state that it is Apple's right to decide what modifications may be permissible, and require prior approval by Apple prior to such modifications.
Is removal and reapplication of thermal grease an attempt to modify functionality of the computer? Of course it is, and that's why some owners have done it. Did they obtain permission from Apple, together with specifications for the modifications? Of course not. I've also noted that some owners requested the modifications to be made by Apple repair centers, and were refused.
Again, I'm not stating that Apple WILL deny future warranty coverage to owners who have modified their computers. But they certainly have the RIGHT to do so.
Anyone who has bought a MacBook Pro can do anything they wish with it, so long as others are not harmed. They can jump up and down on it. But there are warranty provisions that limit Apple's responsibility to provide warranty service for some of the things owners may do to their computers. Thermal grease removal and reapplication is not listed as a user-service activity, like addition of RAM, which is permissible.
Watching some of these threads has as much fascination as watching an impending train wreck.

  • Secure Zone password set (send log in details email) link not working for everyone

    Hi Guys,
I have a site with three secure zones for different online programs. We're beginning to sell some programs and, because we aren't using a seemless gateway, we are manually subscribing them to the secure zones then clicking the 'Send log in details email' button. The email seems to be going out which is good. But, some clients can't click on the link to set their password. Nothing happens. Even if they copy and paste the link text into a browser window, still nothing.
Anybody know why this would be working for some people and not others. Could it be to do with cookies or email clients etc. We are at a loss and therefore have lost two sales so far (they asked for refunds) because they couldn't access their programs in the secure zone.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks LiamDilley for such a prompt reply. Currently my code looks like this:

Are you saying that I should be changing the '[<strong>{tag_password}</strong>]' to:

The thing is, most of the time the link text appears as a link, but not for everyone. Do you think this will fix it?

When I click on anything in the site I get the message " The page you were looking for doesn't exist."  This website works for everyone else, but not on my iPad 2 or iPhone 5. I cleared my cache and history on the iPad, but it still isn't working.

I live in Germany and my credit card is in my native country of Holland .. then it
    doesn't accept my credit card.
Your first statement explains the second statement. To use the German iTunes Store, you need to prove that you're a resident of Germany (that is required by the content owners who will not allow cross-border sales) and the only way Apple can provide such a verification is by requiring that you enter in either a German credit card or a German-purchased iTunes prepaid card. Since I presume the former is not a possibility, you'll need to do the latter if you wish to purchase content from the iTunes Store. Again, this is not Apple's choice but is forced on them by the content owners as a requirement for Apple being allowed to sell the content. The EU is working on regulations that would force the content owners to allow access pan-EU, but that's still in the works.
You do not need an iTunes Store account to activate and run your iPad, though; at least, I didn't need one for either of my two iPads. If you only want to set up an account so you can get free iPad apps, take a look here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
Read the steps carefully as the order in which you follow them is apparently critical. This seems to come and go, or only apply to App Stores in specific countries, so you may not see the option for "None" when asked for a payment type.
As to the German iTunes Store in English, you can comment to Apple on that via their feedback pages:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
    Regards.
P.S. Regarding "this is the only place for a complaint and that will no doubt get removed because
I'm not full of happy joy sparkles.
As stated in the terms of use to which we all agreed, this isn't a complaint forum, it's a technical support forum. You don't have to be full of "happy joy sparkles", but posts that are nothing but complaints may indeed be removed. If you want to complain to Apple, use the feedback pages.

  • How to create files with read/write privileges for everyone?

I have two iMacs 7,1 (one with Snow Leopard and the other with Mountain Lion) in a local area wireless network.
I have shared the "documents" folder in the Snow Leopard iMac in order to have files available to the other iMac. The folder has read/write privileges for everyone.
When I create a new file in the shared "Documents" folder (for example a new Open office document, or a Keynote presentation) this file is by default "read/write" for the Administrator but only "read" for all the other users, so when I try to open it from the other iMac, I am informed that the file is "read only".
I can obviously change the privileges of the file in the information window, but I have to do on a file per file basis and this takes too long.
Is it possible to change settings in order to create files which are always "read/write" for everyone?
And, secondly, since I have several existing files whose privileges I should manually change one by one, is it possible to make global changes of their privileges?
    Thanks in advance
    Best regards

couple of different changes - 1st, if you want to share folders, doing your whole documents folder is not the best way.  Since both your computers can handle AidDrop, that's what I would recommend - http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/14/how-to-use-airdrop-in-mac-os-x/ - as it create an instant Ad-Hoc network between the two computers and then let's it done.
A second possibility that may not be what you're looking for, is to use google drive or some similay cloud sharing app to sync the documents back and forth.  both of these solutions will transfer the files well, but the airdrop may be simplest

If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.
You may have to force iPad/iPod into Recovery Mode

    Hi...
My name is Turgay and have been using computer since 1982... 2 years ago, because of my friend's advice, i bought an iMac... It was the first Mac that i use... Till that, i was using normal PC's...
I bought an 24" iMac on July 2009 and started to use... I realized that i spent my 27 years for using (fixing) computers. Because the Mac was perfect. After iMac, i was really fine with my computer... But after something, that doesn't bother me, happened. The screen started to get cloudy and black... And it increased. Because of this i took my iMac to your authorised distributor http://www.bilkom.com.tr...
They changed my screen but in 2 months it happened 3 times and i wanted them to change my iMac with new one, under customer laws... In our country, the device must be changed with new one if the same problem occurs in 3 months. Because i know the customer satisfaction of Apple, i didn' worry about it but Bilkom refused my will... I spoke with them for 2 months but nothing happened, they just told me, it' not our problem.
Because of this speech, i sued them on June 2011... Last week, i won the case but just for the return of invoince... It costs 3.200 Turkish Liras (1.800$) and there's no 24" iMac unused... Bilkom again refused to give me an iMac... I thought that Apple's customer satisfaction can't be like this... I didn't write anything to Apple till now but if i can't get an iMac, i must return to normal PC after 2 years... And i don't want that... I offered an iMac 27" with core i7... No matter Bilkom accepts or not, they don't care of me... I'm a customer, they should do... I've never seen such a like company. I hope the real Apple will help my problem and save me from Bilkom...
Waiting for your reply... Thanks and regards...

Unfortunately, you are not communicating with Apple here - we are all other users volunteering our time to help with technical problems.
Here is a list of Apple contacts; there is no email address  - you will need to write a letter to their corporate headquarters or call them:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/
Although, it appears that your problem is with a third party store and that you have won in court - did you get your money back? 24" iMacs have not been made since 2009 or 2010. Now there are 21" and 27" iMacs.

  • Scrollable Frame solution for EPUB Fixed Layout

    Hi,
I have found a solution (or, rather a hack) which allows us to create scrolling frames for EPUB Fixed Layouts.
You can find the exported EPUB, as well as my InDesign file on my Dropbox: EPUB scroll.
This solution has some weak points and has only been tested in iBooks on an iPad with iOS 8, but here's how it works:
Create two text frames (one as big as your text requires, and one which will be the container [tip: make the container a bit wider than the text frame])
Cut the big text frame, select the smaller container frame, and Edit->Paste into
Right click on the container, select Object Export Options, choose EPUB and HTML and enter "subchapter" as epub:type:
Open a text editor and create a new CSS file. For CSS code, see below
Export as Fixed layout EPUB. In the export dialog box, select the CSS tab and add the previously created CSS file
    Done!
    CSS code:
    div[*|type = "subchapter"] {
    position: relative;
    div[*|type = "subchapter"] > div {
    overflow: auto;
As you see, steps 1 and 2 are essentialy the same as for creating a scrollable frame folio overlay.
It’s not perfect, and this solution is just a proof-of-concept, but it should get you going.
An obvious problem is that we use basic HTML scrollbar, which is not being displayed in e-book readers such as iBooks on the iPad. Hence, the user has now idea how long the scrollable content stretches. This could probably be solved with a more complex, JS-based solution.
Also, the gradient feather at the bottom (which is intended to create a "fade-out effect) seems not to export well. This one should be easy to solve, placing another rectangle with a gradient in it. But I’m not sure if transparency exports well, and haven’t tested it.
Feel free to use, and improve, this hack!
    Thanks,
    /Jacob

    Thank you Uwe,
I look and hold you aware of your solution in an environment EPUB

@Papo – then I would suggest not a scrollable frame, but an MSO you can click through showing the whole text.
    1. Do some text frames the same size
    2. Thread all the text frames to one story
    3. Align the text frames
    4. Make a MSO out of it:
The text frames are still threaded and text can easily flow between them.
    5. Do some navigation buttons to control the MSO states:
"Go To First State", "Go To Next State", "Go To Previous State" etc.
Later you can change the text (add or remove, do different formatting) flowing in that story through the states.
A very flexible solution. Ok, it's not a scrollable frame, but something like that…

  • NB Visual Web JSF Uses Transitional DOCTYPE, Need Strict for position:fixed

When trying to create a CSS "position:fixed" element in my project that works for Firefox/IE6/IE7 I looked up the simple CSS hacks that need to be used for IE6. Unfortunately, IE6 MUST use a Strict DOCTYPE to accomplish this, and there appears to be no way to change this in the Visual Web projects.
The only thing I can find is the webuijsf:page element has attributes that depending on their boolean value will toggle between a Transitional and Frameset DOCTYPE.
Unless someone knows a CSS hack for IE6 that works with a Transitional DOCTYPE, is there a way for me to switch the Visual Web JSF stuff to use a Strict DOCTYPE?

Show me some proof. Maybe an article on a PC vendor's website or a magazine article that backs up your claim. Even a vga card vendor or retailer that lists the power requirements???

You owe it to every person who comes here looking for help, to give them truthful statements and advice. If you can't, then don't say anything. There are many posts here where people ask for help on their vga cards and the knee-jerk response is "you need a bigger power supply". Syas who? Back it up!! Look through the threads and note how many people you have said that to whom go and spend their money on a new psu, on your recommendation, just to post that they STILL have the same problem.
The moderators here just regurgitate the same lame questionable solutions.
My advice to anyone seeking help here is to do your own homework before wasting money on these "solutions". Join another forum not related to MSI. Find one for NVidia. Or a general tech support forum like techimo. Even ask your local coputer parts stores.
I am not debating the benefits of having a large power supply.
I am, however, questioning your intelligence level and your commitment to helping others versus stroking your own ego.
I will now leave you in peace to say whatever you like about me, but rest assured, after I am done, someone from MSI will be examining this board and it's propensity for distributing inaccurate solutions as related to their products. I am sure MSI will be thrilled with their reputation being associated with inadequacy and unhappy customers

It has been a known issue and has become one of the top solutions to many problems in and out of these forums. In fact, I would say approximately 50% of the time it is an inadequate power supply.
Ever Since the Athlon XP there have been serious issues with inadequate power supplies.
It became obvious that with the current peripherals populating today's PC's the power requirements have increased in performance based systems. Add a GF4 to the mix and it can cripple many supposed 300w power supplies.
If you called my reseller he'd tell you straight out that his tech recommends two or three brands of PSU that are rated over 400w with a AMDXP and GF4 combo, but won't tell you about the combined power requirement because it's like a trade secret.
Telling that to the layman or n00b usually results in a blank stare and that "I don't get it look" I often get from my coworkers when I try to explain anything technical.
Unfortunately, the generic answer from many PC shops is you must have at least a 300w power supply, and again we have the dilemma, whereas there is no set standard, and some will handle the requirements, then, other claimed 300 watters fail miserably and often cause damage to the PC.
Many of these shops don't build the high end systems that we often see in these forums and if they do, it's with tried and true hardware that works together.
There are times when we are wrong but in this medium (forum) it is virtually impossible to be correct in diagnosis all the time, as we cannot be present while troubleshooting.
In troubleshooting PC's and building them yourself without knowledge of these things, leads to many different outcomes.
    1.   you get lucky and the build goes well because you did a little homework before doing so.
    2.   You have problems that lead you to a medium such as this where you will get varied replies just as you would if you were to call a technician. Possibly solving your problem or leading you down the wrong path.
    Ad infinitum.............
Either way, you take the risk of something not performing properly.
Symptoms can be the same for several problems that are encountered. The power supply is more often the solution than not. So my reasoning at least, is why not eliminate the problem before it happens. Remove it from the equation, and if you play your cards right when you purchase the PSU (that may not be the problem).
and you make sure you know the return policy should you not need it, you can then return it, and get your money back.
These are the risks you take when putting together a system or upgrading, novice or not.
You claim to be skilled in troubleshooting, but are you that naive in believing it's that cut and dry?
Neither I nor any of the other mods will tolerate your arrogance and insults to our intelligence, perhaps it is you who need to change your perception.
Offer your skills and help instead of your utter lack of respect. If it is a fight you are looking for, this is not the place or the medium in which to do it, and you have  underestimated your opponent.

  • Execute permission for everyone missing after installation on Mac OS

    Hi,
I installed JDeveloper on Mac OSx and recognized, that execute permission was missing for everyone on some directories under the middleware directory and on the JDeveloper executable in the application package: JDeveloper.app/Contents/MacOS/JDeveloper. So I could start JDeveloper only as administrator but not as normal user. Perhaps you could add this to the additional steps required for a Mac OS installation in the release notes.
    Best regards Thomas

A user deleting a NECESSARY OS file is NOT (repeat: NOT) an Adobe problem. I've seen about a hundred people post in the Apple Forums this week that they did the EXACT same thing: deleted the Mach Kernel file, and it screwed up their entire OS. Apple f'ed up their 10.8.5 update to allow it to be visible, but that doesn't place ANY burden on anyone here.
Kinda reminds me of my earliest days at AOL when people would call in because they deleted "rundll32" from their Windows 98 and then couldn't reboot.
I hope everyone has learned, "If you DON'T KNOW what it does, leave it alone till you've researched it"
