G5 Quad core 24/7 fan.

I have a had my new G5 Quad for a couple weeks and after several attempts at resetting the SMU and PRAM, pulling and reseating the fans I still have fans that run all the time when the Mac is on. The core temps have always been in the 98 - 104° range which doesn't seem too bad while doing photo and graphics stuff. Apple has only suggested the same things that I have already tried and I would like very much to avoid sending it in. It's not a bad distraction but it'd be great to not have to deal with it. Is this common? Anybody have ideas? Thanks in advance...
G5 Quad core   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   4 GB RAM, 500GB ATA HD, 23" HD Cinema Display

The problem is that the 7800's fans aren't controlled by Apple hardware. It's thermal controls are built into the card itself. I'm sure if Apple had something to do with the design, they would have made the air flow from front to back (of the G5 case) instead of from the gpu to the expansion slots compartment which requires the expansion slot fan to push all of it out of the case. If you really want quiet computing, then take a look at that Arctic Cooler. Otherwise, there's really nothing to do about it. The 6600 is a much slower gpu but has no fans which makes it nice for someone who needs a very quiet machine...but in all honestly, we record in Logic and our 7800 is nowhere near loud enough to be a bother. We were using a dual 867 MDD previously and the noise on that machine is at least double what the G5 puts out. When I'm working on the G5, I can still hear the MDD in the other room.

  • Quad Core overheating - fans not speeding up

Came back from holiday to find my PMac Quad Core making a strange clicking, otherwise dead. Investigation leads me to conclude the automatic fan control is not working -- after startup, fans slow down as usual, but don't speed up when they are needed. Hence overheating followed by abrupt shutdown. I have to unplug the machine and let it cool for 15 minutes or so before I can start it up again. So, (a) anyone have this problem, (b) know a fix short of lengthy trip to the repair depot and (c) for the short term, anyone know of a way to manually control the fans' speed?
    Thanks!

Search the forum first for issues with Quad overheating. You probably want to do an SMU reset as well as run Apple Hardware Test, to see what is up.
You can help protect your system and PSU by installing an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) if you don't already.
There is a "fan control" utility for MacBook's that has been tweaked to work on Mac Pro, but maybe someone has. Or set it to run on low performance rather than automatic.
Do you have Hardware Monitor 4.1 installed? can show temps and fan speeds.

  • Logic Pro Fans are louder just by opening Logic on quad core MBP

I have the latest logic pro running on a new Quad core macbook pro. I migrated logic from my previous dual core machine to preserve all the preferences and plugins etc...
When I startup logic, without loading anything at all the fans start to get louder...
    Is this normal?
Could it be a glitch from importing logic from the old machine?
    Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks.

I have just checked Logic CPU usage and it says its only using 2.9%, yet the fans still go crazy...

  • Please to help rookie with quad core on P35 Neo 2 (MS-7345)

I bought a home built computer (specs below) for my sons almost a year ago and have had nothing but trouble with it.  After I finally realized that the graphics card was over-heating it worked better for a bit after replacing Radeon 9600 with some crappy one.  Then I reinstalled XP and seem to have lost drivers for some of the functions of the MB like sound and networking.  Presently it is an impressive looking paperweight with fantastic specs.
It does boot to XP and has internet connection now that I stuck in a NIC card.
I was foolish enough to install and run microsoft genuine advantage and, because it didn't pass, have to read about it every boot and login.  So I'd like to reinstall XP again.
I do have System info for Windows (SIW) installed.
I bought system so sons could play Call of Duty 4.  When I try to launch COD it gives message:
    "Error during initialization:
    Miles sound system initialization failed.
Make sure you have your sound card's latest drivers and DirectX installed."
I have installed latest DirectX but do not know what to do about sound card as it is function of MB, I think.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as to next steps or what further info I would need to gather to solve.
    Thank you!

I dl'd all of the files and began to install from the bottom up.  The "Intel INF Drivers for 3/4/5 Chipsets" went fine but in the 'read me' for "Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver" it says that if none of the supported RAID or SCSI controllers are present in the Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers then your computer is not in RAID, SCSI or AHCI modes and these drivers are not applicable.  Does that makes sense considering the type of hard drive?  Do hard drives have drivers? (apologies if this does not make sense)
Also, the "Realtek PCI-E Ethernet Drivers" only contains dll, system and a security catalog file.  I do not know what to do with these to install.

  • T530, HD 4000 and Quad Core: Not Possible?

    Hello,
I'm in the market for a new Thinkpad and it seems on the T530, if you go for a quad core (QM CPUs), you're forced to go with nvidia.
Is is set in stone?  I ask because I couldn't care less about the nvidia gpu on Linux...
If it is, can the GPU be completely disabled in the BIOS?

    JDay wrote:
You get the Nvidia GPU and the HD 4000 (HD 4000 is built into the CPU). It is actually a nice feature to have, especially if you want to use more than 2 monitors at a time. If you only want to use the HD 4000 just select Integrated Graphics in the UEFI firmware (BIOS). I don't think you can upgrade to the quad-core yourself since I am pretty sure you need a different heatsink/fan assembly to prevent overheating. In fact the motherboard may be different as well, which would explain why it is only available with the Nvidia GPU.
The HD4000 should be able to handle enough monitors I can think of.  That said you have a good point about the heatsink/fan assembly.  Looking at the HW Maintenance Manual, it's definitely not the same piece.
Page 92 of T530 Maintenance Manual.
Bottom line is I guess I'll fork the extra money, even if the GPU isn't really of any use.

  • Trying to decide between i7 and quad core - was told that i7 will overheat?

    Hi,
Did some searching in old threads on this here and online - seemed inconclusive so thought I'd ask again since the Core i7s have been out a while now.
I've been trying to decide between buying a quad core and one of the recent MPB 15" i7s (specifically the 2.66 with the hi res non glare screen). I use FCP, DVDSP, Photoshop etc - usually for several hours a day.
Although the quad core seems the logical choice, I'm on a budget would like some wiggle room to get some other gear - if I get the MPB, I'd be able to sell my 13" 2.53 Core 2 Duo and get that gear. On the other hand, I'm trying to think long term in terms of the viability of the machine I buy.
Just got off the phone with MacMall who told me that because the quad core uses physical cores and the MPB Core i7 uses virtual cores there is a substantial overheating issue with the MPB if you're doing sustained work - say working in Photoshop all day, as I often do. He said that the MBP Core i7s weren't designed to do that so the overheating could cause logic board and other issues over time.
Has anyone experienced this?? Or if you have other thoughts on my dilemma, would love to hear them.
    Thanks!
    cb

I will be a bit more blunt than the other person. Whomever you talked to at MacMall was full of it.
Either you transcribed the details of the conversation wrong, or they have no clue what they're talking about.
Even if you're doing a lot of work in Photoshop all day, the odds of you doing anything that requires a lot of sustained heavy action by the CPU is going to be low. There might be 5 minutes worth of something here or there, but most of the time it's probably going to be pretty limited CPU wise.
There's a reason Apple doesn't put the Core i5 or i7 into the 13" MBPs, and that's because there's just not enough room in the case for the second fan the 15 and 17" models have.
But long story short, Apple isn't like HP or Acer, who will stuff desktop CPUs into laptops because there's some idiot out there who will buy it. And it would be pretty stupid to put a high end CPU like the Core i7 into a laptop, and then expect people NOT to use it.
MBPs aren't really designed for hours worth of sustained work like you'd get from gaming, but I don't think you'd run into any problems with Photoshop.

  • Will a 600W psu be enough for a gtx 260 and an amd quad-core 9950?

I plan to upgrade my 2 year old 8600GT gpus in sli with an MSI GTX 260. Currently, I'm using a 600W power supply from Rosewill with a combined rating of 40A on its 12v 2 X 12v rails. I read that the power requirements of a GTX 260 is a minimum of 500W based upon an Intel Core 2 setup; I was hoping to pair my gpu with a 9950 Black Edition. From my psu specs the maximum output is 585W; I'm currently using an amd 5000+ with 65W. I plan to overclock mainly the cpu and leave the settings on the gpu as is. I counted the difference of 75W if I replaced my cpu with the quad-core; if I added the differece with the minimum requirements of the gpu it totalled 575W? Is this cutting it too close; I really don't want to purchase another psu since it's only 5 months old? What are your recommendations? On the side note I plan to add a second hard-drive. • Apple Mac Pro 2008 dual 2.8ghz quad core

    Hey guys,
Ive got a real brain teaser. I have a apple mac pro 2008 dual 2.8ghz quad core that wont boot.
The leds on the memory test good its all tested in another mac and working well.
The 9 leds are reading as follows 2nd led lit yellow. Led 9,8,7 Green- which from my research is good.
Ive also reset the cmos battery and vram, nothing.
Pulled the memory and video card and re-seated them also nothing.
The last thing i tryed was shut the computer down sit for 30 seconds then held alt and got the install mac os screen not a hard drive option.
Which leads me to think its not seeing the hard drive?
    Any suggestions?

    Starts up with fans
    Makes the apple chime
The chime is generated in software when the first portion of the power-on self test has passed.Your Mac is working and has enough working RAM memory to start up.
You still may have problems with drives, the software on those drives, or your graphics card.
    apple logo comes up
The dark gray Apple is loaded by the ROM boot loader in the first blob of software (before the file system is initialized). Its presence indicates your Mac can get some stuff off a Hard Drive, and seeing it indicates your graphic card can display something in a primitive way.
with spinning gear and just sits there for hours
It is stuck booting up something. Verbose Mode (hold Command-V at startup) will show you the parade of messages. The last five will tell you what happened.

  • Difference between 3,1 and 3,4 GHz Quad-Core  i7

    Hi
Does anybody know if there is a difference between iMAC 3,1 and 3,4 GHz Quad-Core  i7 regarding the sound level of the computer/the fan?
    Thanks R

When I listened to the stock 27" 2011 iMac at an Apple Store, it was dead quiet -- at least so far as I could tell in that environment, which is not exactly the quietest.
I now own a BTO 27" with the 3.4 GHz i7 -- along with both the Apple SSD and a 2 TB internal HD, 16 GB RAM, and the 2GB graphics controller.
With this configuration, in a totally quiet home office, if I listed I can often hear a low-level "whoosh" from the fans. Most of the time, thought, I'm not even aware of that fan sound.
I do sometimes hear the internal HD.
All the iMac's own sounds are insignificant when compared to the spin noise of an external LaCie HD.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Core i7 Quad Core 2.2 GHz freezes when running hot!

I just received my Core i7 2.2 GHz Quad Core 15 inch laptop today. I was eager to put it through its paces. I have been trying to compile/install gcc and watch some HD youtube clips at the same time. As it turns out that's a very bad combo for this laptop. Compiling gcc maxes out all 4 cores and then you add some graphics usage (especially on an external monitor, which kicks in the AMD 6750M chip), the computer overheats. When the CPU Temperature Diode measurement reaches 92 deg C, the computer crashes, every time. I have crashed my new laptop 6 times already this evening, all due to this issue. I kept an eye on my Kill a Watt meter and it pegs near 85 W (battery fully charged). I think a firmwire update to the fan control unit is in definitely needed. The fan is obviously not running aggressively enough. When you have a 45W CPU plus a 30W GPU, plus 13 W of just turning the machine on, then add in WiFi and HDD, you got one hot system. Intel lists a Tjunc of 100 deg C as their temperature limit. Apple needs to figure out either how to gracefully pause while the CPU hit that limits (i.e. not crashing the whole system), or keep their fans running more aggressively when the CPU + GPU activities picks up in a hungry.

I just did some more testing. The bottom line is not that the fans are unable to keep the computer cool, they can, it's just that they don't come to their maximum speed fast enough. Currently I'm encoding a 1080p video clip using HandBrake, watching another 1080p on YouTube, doing a WiFi transfer between two laptops, and having Google Earth spinning the globe in the background. All the CPU cores/threads are maxed out. I'm doing all this with an external monitor attached which means the AMD graphics chip is running too. With the both fans running max at 6200 rpm, the CPU diode temperature according to smcFanControl (and Temperature Monitor) has settle at 88-89 deg C, 3 degrees below the crash point. So the moral of the story is that if you know you are going to go from zero to 100 in CPU usage in no time, turn on smcFanControl and max out your fans first! This way, you won't overheat and crash. This might seem a bit too hands on for us regular users but at least it seems to works.

What do you think would be best for Photoshop CS5
    Thank you!

I'm about ready to build a new Photoshop computer & I'm looking at the Intel Core i5 2500K for use in one of the P8H67 motherboards along with 16GB of RAM.  The reason for this combo (K suffix & H67) is that they enable use of the built-in Intel HD 3000 graphics processor.  (I know this combo won't allow overclocking, but I'm not an overclocking kind of guy.  The Z68 chipset due out in a month or two will enable the built-in graphic plus overclocking, but that's another story....)
Question -- Will the built in HD 3000 graphics work well with Photoshop or would I need a better discrete graphics card?
Also, what's the current view of using SSD's for the PS scratch drive?  I used a Raid 0 scratch when I built my last PS computer 6 years ago, but after I had a Raid controller failure, I switched to a single Raptor drive for scratch.  I'll be dealing with up to 600MB Photoshop files, but I'm thinking that with 16GB's of ram, the scratch drive speed may be less of an issue.  Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

  • When will i5 and i7 Quad Core iMacs actually be shipped?

I ordered the new iMac 27" Quad Core i7 yesterday. I am so excited to start using it in place of my iMac G5. My order says it will be shipped in "November" but the new optional Apple Remote is showing as being shipped "November 23" (is that a hint?) Does anyone have a clearer understanding of the likely ship date for the Quad Care iMacs. I am guessing that the delay is due to Apple not yet having a supply of these particular i5 & i7 Intel chips, are they being used currently in any other Macs? I don't think so. If you have any thoughts/info, I'd love to here from you.

Since order an i7 Quad iMac, I've checked this discussion board several times a day, and other such postings several times a day. I'm glad we are able to share our excitement about getting these new iMacs up and running at home. Apple itself has been silent beyond the "November" ship date, I would think they should be getting a bit more specific in a day or two. The most hopeful sign I see is that Best Buy Canada Online is still stating est. ship date Nov. 3rd. I assume they mean Nov 3rd 2009. I am not a big fan of Best Buy, but I was able to buy my Canon 5D Mark II camera from one of their retail store in NYC, when nobody else had them in stock. This great camera is still hard to find in retail stores. Thanks for everyone's posts on the Quad's shipping date, at least we know we are not alone in the wait and anticipation!

  • New NI CompactRIO calls the question, "¿Quien is mas macho, Intel quad-core Atom or 4-year-old i7?"

Perhaps you remember the Saturday Night Live TV sketch from 1979 where Bill Murray played a game show host who asked the show’s titular question, “¿Quien es mas macho?”
Today, Matt Spexarth, Principal Product Manager for Embedded Systems at National Instruments (NI), called the NI CompactRIO controller introduced this week at NI Week—the model cRIO-9039, which pairs a 1.91GHz, quad-core Intel Atom CPU with a Xilinx Kintex-7 325T FPGA—the highest-performance CompactRIO ever released. That includes the existing cRIO-9082 controller, which pairs a 1.33GHz, dual-core Intel i7 CPU and a Xilinx Spartan-6 LX150 FPGA. So both the processor and the FPGA have been upgraded in the new CompactRIO controller. The NI cRIO-9039 controller es mas macho.
NI Model cRIO-9039 Controller in an 8-slot CompactRIO Chassis
The new NI CompactRIO controller runs security-enhanced NI Linux Real-Time. It has an SDHC card slot for non-volatile storage and can directly operate a local, graphical UI (user interface) as a human-machine interface. Another key performance feature, noted Spexarth, is a bank of DDR3 SDRAM attached directly to the Kintex-7 FPGA to allow the FPGA to directly handle large data sets, to process large FFTs for example.
As with the entire line of NI CompactRIO controllers, you program the cRIO-9039 controller using NI’s LabVIEW graphical development environment with its many add-on modules including LabVIEW FPGA. In addition, the new CompactRIO controller maintain compatibility with the many CompactRIO plug-in I/O hardware modules.

    Whygirl,
it reads as though an internal disk upgrade (and possibly a battery replacement) would suffice for you, and those two together would be far less expensive than a new MacBook Pro. Yes, you could install either a HDD or a SSD in place of its current internal HDD. You could look at the Hitachi Travelstar 7K1000 as an example of a suitable 1 TB HDD; SSDs are more expensive per unit of storage than a HDD, but might be worth the extra cost if your apps are disk-bound. (I put a Samsung 840 PRO into my 13-inch Mid 2010 model, and it’s been working well.) Note that Chrome might be responsible for the extra heat (and the extra heat is responsible for the increased volume from the fans kicking in); Chrome isn’t optimized for use on 64-bit versions of OS X, like 10.8.5.

  • Powermac g5 quad core reboot issue, led etc.

Hey guys. Gals. Whomever. Have a g5 quad core that has been bullet proof solid until recently. Annoying little red led popped up. (under the 1st ram slot, which co-incidentally is empty.) Then a second red one (Under 4th ram slot, 1" or so in from the edge of the board) went on..
When both comes on, nothing happens..
What has been happening is this.. one red led is on, and the computer spontaneously sleeps. I played around a bit with istat pro, and think it may have been because the fans were running full blast, and the temp was still rising. (no coolant leaks, etc). I set the performance to "reduced" and all seems well.. Apple guys suggested re-installing osx with an archived installation to save all my other stuff, and I figured "hey, why not.."
Then it got weird. Computer will NOT restart. If I restart the computer from apparently any state, it simply makes the tone, both led's come on, and it goes to a grey screen with a mac apple on it and does nothing else. Eventually the fans kick on full blast, and I have to hold the power button to turn off. And that is after inserting the disc, running the little prompts, and having the computer restart it self.
    I have seen
-file folder w. question mark prior to apple
-flickering of the screen when boots up. (white, then black, then desktop etc)
    I have...
    -checked vid cable for tightness
-removed all firewire devices (only had one a high speed camera card reader)
-unplugged everything and hit the pvram reset button
-removed the battery on the motherboard
-shut the machine down, stuck the osx disc in, and restarted.
all to no real avail. The machine boots and works fine from cold. Will NOT restart.
If the osx disc is in, it goes to grey screen with apple on it, and after like 20 secs the fans go on full blast, and the dvd winds up to a zillion rpms. Nothing more..
I have a apple wireless aluminum keyboard, and have tried to boot with the cmd option p r ,or o f settings and nothing happens. not sure if the machine recognizes this keyboard early enough in it's boot to be of any use.
    Currently
    -no led's on.
    -reduced performance setting
    -can't restart computer
    -can't install/reinstall osx

    2/18/09 9:19:36 AM com.apple.loginwindow[35] Shutdown NOW!
2/18/09 9:19:36 AM com.apple.loginwindow[35] System shutdown time has arrived
That seems to correspond with me manually shutting it down..
I fired it up with the disc in the drive and it went further than before... actually went to grey screen w apple and rotating disc thing. Then the lights came on. I booted it with the plexi shield off.. The plexi light went on (yellow) and when it was all said and done (Hung up) it had more lights on than before..
One light above 1st ram slot
one below ram slot (over temp)
    checksum light (as you wrote)
    Yellow shield is off light
    red light under that one..
I can read the descriptions on most of htem, the red under the yellow got away from me.
I will have to take it in to get fixed.. BUT theproblem is this.. there is no one near me.
I called apple yesterday and they said "XX" ct, which is 2 hrs and a boat ride away...
There are some regular computer techs in town but they have been less than impressive..
    Thoughts?
