Dear Experts; I have a general question which I have yet to test. Is it faster to use an ODBC driver to connect and retrieve data from an Oracle database than creating a .net webservices and using an XML to get the data for your web application. THank you

At some point in the architecture stack some component will need to access the database in order to get the information from the database. That component will need to use an Oracle client driver.

General question about iTunes Match and multiple libraries

Hello to everyone,
I have a general question about the iTunes Match service, which is available since yesterday in my country (Italy). Currently my library situation is the following:
Computer A (desktop, Windows 7): "big" iTunes library (about 20 GB), at the moment not associated with my Apple ID
Computer B (MacBook Air 2011): "small" iTunes library (about 5 GB), associated with my Apple ID
At the moment, both my iOS devices (iPhone 4 and iPad 2) are synchronized with the smaller library on the MacBook Air.
Question is as follows: should I subscribe to iTunes Match, would it be possible to upload the "big" library (provided I associate it with my Apple ID) to iCloud while keeping my devices synchronized with the "small" one?
Ideally, at the end of the day, the situation should be the following: both iOS devices with music from the small library + possibility of downloading songs from iCloud (coming from the big one). Is this possible?
Maybe the question sounds stupid, but I want to be sure about this before paying for the service.

Yes, you could also associate your larger library with iTunes match if you associated your Apple ID with it. However any purchases in the library made from another Apple ID will not be matched with iTunes much.
If both libraries are part of iTunes match, then all your devices will see all of the content from both libraries, which content you choose to have on those devices and which you have accessible via iTunes match is entirely up to you.

Question about Java,XSLT and XML

I am new to Java and XML. I'm not quite clear the relationship between Java,XSLT and XML.
To exercise, I am going to write a Java program that makes embedded calls to an XSLT processor(XALAN), to produce results for several constrained transformations from a given XML document(x.xml) such as:
1.Transform the x.xml (which satisfies d1.dtd) in such a way that it now conforms to the DTD d2.dtd. Output the resulting xx.xml document.
2.query some information from the x.xml and then form an Html output.
3.summary some information, do some statistics from the x.xml and then form an Html output.
I don't konw which java classes and XSLT functions might be used.(Actually I don't know how/where to start).
Can anyone give me some clue ?

You must provide XSLT stylesheeds to specify transformations (1), (2),
and (3); let's call those stylesheets task1.xsl and so on.
The following code will transform x.xml into xx.xml according to task1.xsl. It gives you an idea which packages and classes to use, but it doesn't teach you proper Java programming technics :)

General question about storage, networking, and using large amounts of data

I have been using a powermac tower G5 up until now. I bought my daughter a macbook pro 15" i7, talk about a zippy little machine. What a screamer. I can't believe how fast it is with final cut express, Aperture, and Photoshop. I tend to use higher end stuff, video, photos, etc. Hence I need not only a good fast processor, but the storage....need lots of hard disk space.
oh, did I mention I bought this for my daughter who's about to go off to college? Heh, when I'm home, she loses the machine to me.... *evil grin*
Anyways, I haven't considered using a laptop before for me personally as I just don't care for the small screen size, no mouse, and things like that.
Seems I've changed my opinion, esp seeing as the new mouse track pad is a game changer. I still am not crazy about the small screen size, but I can get over it.
The one thing I can't get around is the small disk storage. I have 4 TB on my big machine. Between my video, photography, and music, I am nearing a full TB of just raw stuff. If I count all the things I've stored, especially finished videos I make of photography projects, well you can image the chomping that occurs on disk storage.
So what is a man to do about storage?
I'm really getting hooked on this zippy little machine. The idea of dragging it around is compelling. Having my work not tied to a desk is fun.
but the lack of storage is sucky, terribly so.
I have one possible option, taking the G5 and making it a server. I can use it for backup and high speed transfer, working on the transfer part today.
I thought I'd poll the collective wisdom of the community and see what do you peeps think is the best overall way to handle such a situation?
What is the absolute fastest best way to use external drives? Firewire 800 is ok, but when working with 400gb aperture database files....
I'm hoping there is some way to start posturing myself to really use a laptop for my full computing experience.
Or am I trying to make a small portable machine act like a tower? Is this not a reasonable hope at this point in time?
I'm open to suggestions. I'm going to purchase something when my daughter takes this laptop with her to college. Either a new mac pro tower or laptop. I love the portability but need speed and massive storage.

Storage:
1. Replace the drive with a larger one. Up to 1 TB is now available for notebook drives.
2. Get a portable external drive for additional storage needs. See the options at OWC as an example.
Drive speed:
1. FW 800 should be fast enough for your work. If the computer has an ExpressCard slot then consider a card supporting full speed eSATA. You may then achieve speeds closer to the internal bus.
A laptop is not a tower so stop thinking of or comparing to your tower. Besides the laptop's speed compared to your G5 is more like comparing a Ford Focus to a Ferrari F150.
As for "polling" opinions here: polling is forbidden by the forums' Terms of Use.

Questions about Using Lightroom and Print Studio Pro

I want to use Print Studio pro via the lightroom plugin since as I understand it, that is the only way to ensure a 16-bit file is being passed to the printer (on Windows). However, I am a little confused about how the image is being rendered. Is lightroom applying a default output sharpening to the file before handing it off to Print Studio Pro or Does Print Studio Pro manage resolution and Output sharpening based on the media and print size you choose?
So basically I am wondering if there is any output sharpening being applied, and when is it applied. The possibilities I think would be:
Lightroom is applying a default output sharpening when rendering the file to TIF for Print Studio Pro (If this is the case, what setting is being applied and is it possible to change it?)
Print Studio Pro is applying output sharpening based on media type and print size, or applying a generiz amount of sharpening that does not take into account media or size.
No Sharpening is being applied. In this case, I should probably be exporting this file manually with output sharpening applied and then opening in Print Studio Pro
The other question I have is if when using the plugin is the TIF file that is being generated in 16-bit pro-photo to ensure the maximum amount of color data?
Because if Print Studio Pro is not applying sharpening I think it may just be better to print through the lightroom tool even though it renders down to 8-bit because the amount of control I have via the lightroom print module would be far more advantageous than any color data I am losing by printing in 8-bit.
Anyone know the answer to all this?

I had similar questions when I first got my Pro-100.
1. You can call up PSP from any module, so I assume it is ignoring print module settings.
2. If I select a Saved Print, which adjusts the print module settings specific to that print, and the open PSP the paper settings in PSP are not what is in LR, supporting the "ignore" conclusion.
3. I ran some test prints using LR to print at three different output sharpening settings (Off, Standard, High) to ensure I could see a difference (I did).
4. I ran four test prints: LR-Standard, XPS driver, LR-Standard regular driver, PSP using standard driver and PSP using XPS driver. I couldn't see any difference between the four prints.
Since LR is such an easy printing process I haven't seen a reason to use PSP.

General question about sound libraries and instruments in Logic

Hello all...
I am possibly looking to upgrade from Logic Express 8 to Logic Pro, mostly to take advantage of the vast sound library's and software instruments. My question is to those who are familiar with the sounds, vintage instruments etc. I have a Nord Stage piano with incredible acoustic and electric piano samples...I'm thinking of selling my Nord but I don't want to lose the incredible instrument recreations...can the sounds in Logic Pro compete with the real thing for trained ears?

I see this type of question all the time.
It doesn't matter.
When someone listens to your song it doesn't matter what type of instrument you use, real or not.
If the melody isn't there, no one is going to remember your song.
You know when you get the song right when people hum it while walking, taking the bus, etc...
What they don't talk about is, hey, Sweetsonic used a pretty good Nord on that one song....
Buy Logic 8 cause the massive amount of instruments you get with it will help you explore other instruments, which can lead to a creative song.
Look at the Beatles, when George Harrison experimented with the Sitar, they got more classic songs.

New to Apple, questions about using Windows, and other things

Hello all,
Today is my first day as an Apple owner. It's funny because I'm also a MCSE, MCSA, and MCP.
I purchased a 24" iMac, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, and 1TB Hard Drive.
I want to use Windows on my Mac so that I don't have to keep switching over to my PC. My main reason for using Windows is so that I can continue to enjoy my PC Games... mostly racing and D&D games.
So my question is... how does Windows run on bootcamp? Can I still use all of my USB controllers (like my steering wheels, joysticks, etc?)
I really havent even turned on my iMac... been too amazed at just looking at it for the first day (and also rearranging my home office).
I really just want to know from those of you who have PCs AND Macs, if you still find yourself having to go back to your PC because of incompatibilities or performance issues on the iMac?

Using BootCamp, your Windows experience is no different than if running it on a similarly configured PC. If you went with a VM running under Mac OS X (like VMWare or Parallels), there are a number of differences. However, using BootCamp you have a Mac-branded PC.
I'd point out that people have been dual-booting operating systems in this fashion for decades. Windows has no obvious in-built support for doing so, but other operating systems (like Linux, FreeBSD, etc.) have always very clearly and explicitly supported dual-booting (on Macs and regular PCs) from the get go.

Questions about using Rescue and Recovery backup / Alternatives

I have used R&R, created DVD backup set, restored to a new HD. All worked great. Now a few months later I'd like to create another DVD BU set. Apparently we can only create ONE R&R dvd? It tells me I can continue to create the BU dvd set or cancel. My son has an identical X61 tablet and he could not create R&R the first time on DVD. I burned him a copy of mine and he was able to restore to his new HD. So, why restrict to a single copy of a dvd which is easily duplicated?
Question: Is the old R&R dvd compatable with new version of R&R (4.2x)? Can I continue to use it with new dvd BU sets?
Second: has anyone found a good backup utility like Casper which allows complete HD BU to an external drive? This is something I always did before the Lenovo, kept a spare HD to simply plug in in case the operating one failed, great BU. Casper will NOT work with Vista and the X61. Worked with them for several weeks, no progress. Created some hard to remove problems as well.

I do weekly BU to an external TBHD using the Thinkvantage utility but my confidence is not complete.

Question about using threads and synchronizing objects

I am not that familiar and I have 2 questions.
QUESTION 1
I have a server which just sits and accepts incomming connections, then I spawn off a new thread which implements Runnable, and then call the run method. But the loop would not iterate, it would just sit inside the run method (which has rather long loop in it). I changed the class to extend Thread and called the start() method, rather than run(), and everything worked out fine.
Anyone know why this is?
QUESTION 2
So I am building a client server chat application where a user can be in multiple chat rooms. I have this personObject which has output/input streams. In the personObject, I create writeObject/ readObject method, which simply does as it implies.
I figured that I should make these methods synchronized, to ensure things run smoothly. however, when I made a call to readObject, which sat there and waited, and then made a call to writeObject, I would not enter the writeObject method. I took out the synchronized on the writeObject, and everything worked out fine.
I was under the assumption that synchronizing a method only synchronized on that method, not on the whole class. How come then was I not able to enter the writeObject method?
The more I think about it, I don't think I need to have these methods synchronized, but I thought it wouldn't hurt.

You should still implement Runnable, rather than extending Thread. Like this: Runnable r = new MyRunnable();
Thread t = new Thread(r);
t.start(); run() is just another method. Nothing special about it as far as multithreading or anything else goes.
start() is the method that actually spawns a new thread of execution.

the writeObject method?When you synchronize, you obtain a lock. As long as you hold that lock--until you exit the sync block or call wait()--no other thread can enter that block or any other block that obtains the same lock.
Two synchronized methods on the same object rely on obtaining the same lock--there's one lock for each object.

Some General Questions about using SSL sockets

1 Since both SSL and TLS rely on public-key cryptography, can I use it efficiently for encrypting large amount of data transfer within a network? Or I�ll be better off using secret key.
2 If I understand correctly, I can install client/server certificate (public key) along with the software installation. Is that right? In other words, I don�t have to create them programmatically.
3 To convert our unsecured client/server application, is it enough to replace plain sockets with SSL sockets and use a self signed certificate for the server? (Ours is a closed network and we don�t require any client authentication).
4 How does SSL handles server to server communications?
5 How do you encrypt data ( some of the fields) in a text file?

hey there.
1.yes you can use it to encrypt large amounts of data, and heres why:
when you use SSL, it uses public key encryption to first tranfser across a private key. then from then on the data is simply private key encrypted, which is relatively fast and easy.
2. Yes, you may chose to make them programatically or not
4. the question doesn't really make sense. In the end, what is a Server and what is a Client is up to your application. From SSL's point of view, you just have two machines with Sockets on either side that are connected. You can use SSLSocket.setClientMode(boolean) to choose which of those socket will act as the "server" for the purpose of the authentication handsake.

General Question about JRE - Versions and backward compatibility etc

Could someone maybe help me with this query?
I've got a group of network users who use a total of four java applications which I am told require different versions of the Java Runtime Environment to run.
Is it therefore possible to have muliple versions of the RTE installed on one user machine to make all applications work at once or is it simply a case of having to have only one version of the JRE.
I'm talking mainly about in house applications so I guess if some of them are incompatible with the latest JRE then the answer might be to find out what the problem is and fix the application so it works in the lates jre - or am I missing something?

First of all, it is possible to keep several JRE installed in Windows. For example, my PC has JRE 1.3.1.8, 1.4.0.1, 1.4.2.6.
Second. A tecnology exists to cause a Windowst to run a specific JRE for a specific Java applet. Please see the text below.
HTML Applet Configuration
� The standard (Internet) method of calling Java Runtime when using a Java Applet is to use an Applet tag within the HTML file itself specifying the applet details (example below). This tries to attach itself to Microsoft Java Runtime registry CLSID as detailed above.

Newbie question about using vectors and arrays

I'm fairly new to JME development and java in general. I need some help in regards to Vectors and 1 dimensional arrays. I'm developing a blackberry midlet and am saving the queried info i pull back from my server side application with each record saved into the array and subsequently each array saved as an element in the vector, thereby creating a 2D "array".
However I'm having a problem accessing the elements in the array. Here is a sample of what I mean and where I get stuck:

General Questions About Use of Hyperion for Reporting

Hi,I'm investigating whether we can use Hyperion reporting tools for my company. Can anyone help with the ff:What is the difference between Hyperion Reports and SQR? From the docs I've seen, SQR seems more flexible than Reports? Or are they used for different purposes? Can I use Hyperion Reports with DB2 or Oracle databases? Before I posted my code, I double-checked my syntax and think I found the problem. I using Fragments at the beginning of my page, and at the end, to construct a wrapper table where I can put some fancier graphics, etc. I'm using the fragments and plain old HTML because using another gridpanel on each page is a bit cumbersome, and also I need the flexibility of possibly doing some dynamic things to this table... Because each fragment doesn't have matching tags to complete the page, I think that's screwing up the designer, as you suggested. For instance, here is my fragment at the top of each page :

General questions about imported video and audio clips

Hey guys. I'm a new Apple convert so forgive me if I ask extremely stupid questions.
1. If I import a video file that has audio in it, am I able to separate the audio from the video? I want to edit in pictures over some of the video but keep the audio playing over it. Is this possible in FCE?
2. I've started a project on FCE and I can't hear the audio from an mp3 file I downloaded. I know I have to convert it to an AIFF file (which I thought I did, at 16bits), but I still can't hear it. Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks for the reply. As to my first question, I assume then when I import a video clip with audio on it, FCE will automatically split the two?
As to my second question, thanks for the link, but I already tried it and still no audio. Is there something I need to fix in the playback? I'm still not clear on what the RT tab does. Maybe it's something with that?

Newbie question - general question about e-mail sync

Hi,
I have a general question about email sync and BlackBerry smartphones. Are there any devices that allow email syncing with a Microsoft Exchange 2007 system that do not require the BlackBerry Enterprise server?
Thanks; sorry if this has been asked before but I was unable to find it in the forums, documentation, etc. Everything I found assumes that for this kind of environment you will be using a BlackBerry Enterprise solution, but I can't assume.

If the Exchange server has anything that faces the internet (OWA, POP, IMAP), then BIS can be used to handle email (only email...calendar and contacts require BES to sync OTA).
Or, a PC, inside the network (but with an internet path) and logged into the email server (using Outlook), can be left running, using the RIM Desktop Software's Desktop Redirector capability to forward messages to the BB.
Those are basically the options.
