Genius Bar Guy Re-established Software to Solve Battery Problem 4S ???

iPhone 4S is  2-years-old and running iOS 7.1  was suddenly losing battery charge after a few hours in Standby mode.
I took it to the Apple Store and a guy from the Genius Bar took the phone into the back for 15 minutes and gave it back to me.
He said to try it for a few days.
He said it was a software problem and he had to "re-establish it to the normal software."
Anyone have a guess as to what that means?
Thanks, cb

What do you mean by "restored the device"
Did he back it up and restored factory settings? Then restored what he had backed up?
I should have asked him more questions.
Thanks, cb

  • I stumped a Genius Bar guy on two iPhone points

I recently went to the Soho Apple store and went over all my issues that I have with my iPhone. Most of them I have seen discussed over and over since the release (see my long list below). However here are two issues I have not seen discussed that are highly problematic. When I brought them up to a Genius Bar guy, he said I had found all the issues he knew of and didn't even know about these two:
First, from your contacts, if you click on an address to look it up in Maps, if that adress contains a Fl.#, Flr.# Fl # Fl. # Floor # or anything like that, Maps cannot find the address. If you delete the Floor number out of your contact, Maps locates the address without issue. Living in NYC, I have a lot of addresses with floor numbers, so this is really annoying.
Second, if you are on the phone, you cannot edit an existing contact, or create a new one. Why this is the case completely baffles me. Essentially, I have to write down someone's info if they give it to me over the phone and then add it after I've hung up.
I hope apple takes note of these two biggies and also...my long list of issues:
    No copy and paste
USB recognition in iTunes is buggy, though better since updates
Cannot txt to mutliple addresses or forward txts
    No picture texting
Freezes and crashes of all kinds, though better since updates
No search feature for address book; Spotlight please??
Email doesn't flip sideways like Safari
General volume is too low for phone, external speakers, ringer and alerts
Calender is not color coded for categories
    No Flash
All that said, I love my iPhone. I just hope Apple goes the distance in raising it from a B+ to and A+ device.
Note: I recently went to Scotland for a week. I texted quite a bit, made a few phone calls here and there and had $24 in additional charges on my bill. Not too bad. Just be sure to keep airplane mode on whenever you can, don't use Safari or any web based widgets and you shouldn't ring up a big bill overseas.

if that adress contains a Fl.#, Flr.# Fl # Fl. # Floor # or anything like that, Maps cannot find the address.
Google Maps used to have the same problem with Suite, St, #, etc, didn't it? Those seem okay now.
For fun, I just tried your "Flr#" variations using Google Maps for Windows Mobile (which is almost the same as iPhone but without animated pushpins). That version also fails to find the address... unless it's spelled out explicitly as "Floor", which works.
So it appears to be a Google problem. We should try the direct Google web service to confirm.
PS. So I started thinking. Hey, Google has a big office in New York. They even work on Maps there:
    http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/static.py?page=why-ny-ny.html
So don't they ever look up themselves? Wouldn't they figure out that "Flr" was a problem? Haha, no. Because their address is listed as:
    76 Ninth Avenue
    4th Floor
    New York, NY 10011
With "Floor" spelled out. Which works

  • TS1559 Genius bar guy tells me that iOS update and this procedure fried my wifi antenae

Have done this procedure several times after updating to 7.0.2. due to greyed out wifi.  Genius bar says wifi is dead... because the iOS update and this procedure fried/overheated the wifi antenae.  So I have to buy a new phone because I followed Apple's instructions?  Not cool, and in my opinion Apple should replace the phone.  Of course my warranty period is over, but when a manufacturer releases an update and a bug fix that you follow, which results in a fried phone... should they not take some responsibility?
This is a well documented problem, and many others have had phones replaced.

they usually only charge $19 if they need to do troubleshooting on a device and if they dont fix ur issue they refund it back. and even then they give exceptions to the fee left and right. plus, if u just want to talk to customer service or a senior advisor they WILL transfer u to them no matter what.

  • Interesting Battery rehab Suggestion from a Genius Bar guy

I have a 2003-vintage PB17 a friend gave me when he upgraded. I believe the battery is original, and it shows 87% health and 106 cycles--not bad for an old machine. Still it shuts down at between 60 and 70 percent. If I start to charge it, its level grows slowly for a while and then jumps to 100 percent.
Normally I'm 350 miles from an Apple Store but on a recent trip to Portland OR, I packed the PB17 along for a visit to the Apple Store in Washington Square Mall. The genius confirmed that, based on serial number, the battery was probably original and that there were no warranty extensions or repair programs for 17" batteries.
However, based on the fact that the computer shuts down at about the same point each time, he suggested that one of several internal cells within the battery was failing to reset. He said I should let the battery run down and let it recharge to some point below the cut-off range (60-70 percent in my case), then run down the battery again and recharge.
I haven't had time to do this yet but thought I'd offer it for those with similar battery behavior.
Another tidbit of info he had was that the backup battery was rechargeable. I knew it was in the G3 PowerBooks but thought is was not in the G4s. I tend to agree with him; the first time the battery croaked, the computer had been off power for a long time and I got a total shutdown, The second time, after running a lot on A/C, the backup battery held function until I could get the PB back on wall power.

I would say untrue. Just my opinion though as I (and am sure that person) don't have access to the source code.
With that said, I have had the iPhone since Day 1 and have not had an issue with the battery or how it reads it's charge.
However, my wifes phone has on a couple of occasions not shown a full charge after being plugged in all night (to outlet, not computer thus sleep mode not an issue). A turn of and on did not correct it (as turning the phone off just puts it to sleep, it doesn't reboot the OS). But a reboot fixed it instantly.
Read this thread about the OS and reboots.

  • Has anyone solved battery problem on the S5IS

So far  duracell coppertop NMH 1600mah promaster and nothing seems to last operating camera with external flash and no LCD monitor on to get any life, does anyone make a battery pack or grip for more capacity.

    Hi Crackers,
I think you're on the right track, in using Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries, but we recommend using NiMH batteries with a 2500 milliamp hour capacity.  More is better, still.
    I hope this is helpful.

  • GR Stress - software on my desktop after Genius Bar visit

Anyone have an idea what GR Stress does or is?
It seems like the Genius Bar guys left it on my machine after a recent check up visit ...

This application was left on my MacBook Pro after a recent visit to the Apple Store. I thought my hard drive was bad so one of the geniuses must have run this GR Stress application. I haven't dug into it very far, but it seems like it opens several instances of Chess and Grapher and monitors the performance of the machine.

  • !! Projects VANISHED. Complete iMovie failure. Genius Bar at a loss. HELP!!

I bought a brand new iMac 2.4 Ghz two weeks ago, SPECIFICALLY so I could "upgrade" to imovie 08 and cut movies of my son. iMovie worked FLAWLESSLY for the first 10 days, no problems whatsoever. I created several projects, using video clips from my iPhoto (these thumbnails all loaded seemlessly from the start. I use a Canon Powershot SD900 and the video clips are amazing in resolution, 5 times better than any camcorder video, hence I was ONLY working from iPhoto video clips from my digital still camera (I have a lot of them - 45 Gs in my iPhoto). Anyway, opened iMovie an hour after working in it previously, and 'POOF' nearly all of my projects were gone. In addition, everything was completely grayed out, clips wouldn't load, iMovie frozen. Called Apple care and tried clearing my chache, etc. No luck. Took it to the Benius Bar and (long story short, after 2 days in genius bar) they transfered all my user files onto ANOTHER brand new iMAC and now I have two (out of 9) projects 'recovered' but iMovie freezes and acts like its on drugs. Can't edit. Can't open a new project. Total Movie failure. Useless. The Genius bar is at a loss. Says the total iMovie failure may be because I have a single piece of data (a video clip, a photo, even a song) that is corrupted. What the @#$%? Somebody PLEASE help!

Sorry to learn that you have not been able to find a solution.
I knew which clip was corrupted because it was the only one that would not permit any editing. Fortunately, it was that easy.
If you had just one iMovie that you were working on, and you could open new projects, you could copy/paste half of the movie to a new project and see which half plays well. Then with the problem half, copy/paste another half to a new project and see if you can keep repeating the process until you isolate the corrupted clip. It is tedious, but works. However, you said you could not even open a new project in iMovie, so I don't think this solution will be helpful in your situation.
You will probably need a radical approach and will just have to start over. It will be a lot of work to redo several projects, but well worth the time if it works. Look at how much time you have spent trying to recover/fix/figure out what is going on. Plus, you have all your video clips, and the second construction usually goes faster because you remember how you had it the first time.
So, unless the Genius bar guys have a better solution, I would trash all your Movie projects and files, reinstall iMovie, and start over with the creation of your iMovies. Be sure to repair permissions before and after reinstallation. You should then have a pristine iMovie app, so you should be able to open it without problems.
If all is ok so far, reimport the video clips, but do just one at a time. That way, you will see which, if any, one of them is a problem clip. You may never find out exactly what went wrong, and if you don't completely start over, you may run into this problem again and again.

  • Rant about Apple Service and Genius Bar!

I bought my daughter a MacBook a week ago as a graduation gift for college. She had an '02 Ibook with a logic board that went out over 3 times. We took the plunge and bought the new computer. It's great and she loves it. Took the Ibook to the Applestore as they will transfer her old files to her new computer within one week without a charge. Initially, we were told we had to buy Pro
care for $99.00 for this service, but one of the sales clerks mentioned, in passing, that files are transferable from one Mac to another within 7 days. We literally had our charge card in the hands of the sales guy who looked rather embarassed when we learned that this was a free service. Do these guys get some sort of commission on these "add-ons?". So, after several so-called experts on the process, we were finally hooked up with one of their techy guys who said they'd remove the hard drive from the Ibook and create a folder on her new hard drive with her old files. It was going to take 2 days to do the transfer...
After 3 days, we called the store. They pulled the paperwork and said the transfer was complete. My daughter dashed in rush hour traffic to get her computer as she has finals this week. She brings the computer home without checking, and when opened....nothing..nada...no files...exactly the same as when we dropped it off. We called the store...too busy to take our call...said they'd call us back. After two hours, they called. Suggested we type in a name of a file that she knew was on the computer. She did...zero results. No files. no pics, no nothing.
Okay...my rant. We have to take the computer back, and no doubt, they'll end up keeping it for another 3 days or so. Should I insist they do the transfer while we wait?
IMO, most of the staff I've worked with at the Apple stores I've visited have been a bit "odd". Yes, they are techy, but I can't seem to find a simple answer to a simple question. Most of them act flustered and the files transfer should not have been a big deal. Everytime I turned around, I was being directed to the "add" ons. I did buy Applecare, but no, not interested in .Mac. I have no need for that program.
I have owned Apples and Mac for over 20 years. I am no expert, but I often find myself avoiding the sales staff. I do a lot of my shopping on-line....however, this was something I could not do myself, due to the logic board being out.

Okay..so the "Genius" Bar guy tells us that the firewire cord will fail once the logic board starts to go out...( we can boot the Ibook up for about 3 minutes before the horizontal lines appear) However, originally we were told that that shouldn't be a problem. So, I fiddle around last night after talking to two managers at the Apple store convincing them that NO, the file transfer was never completed as requested despite ther insistence that the files must be on her new Mac book. Believe me, we searched the entire harddrive, and since the computer was new, it was easy to see that her 900 pics were NOT on the new computer...
Anyway, voilla...the Ibook hard drive showed up with the firewire cord and I was able to transfer most of what she wanted. It took me a long time and it was tedious, but she got her pics and files and now we don't have to return to the Apple store. The manager, of course, apologized, but offered no other explanation other than "I don't know what happened".
Okay...so they missed the boat. It's not the end of the world, but it does serve as a reminder to double check one's service/paperwork and computer prior to leaving the Apple store....

  • Aperture ate my picture files and they are not recoverable.  The guy at the Genius Bar told me to Trash the App, empty Trash, then go to Purchases and reinstall.  But Purchases says it is "Installed" so it does not let me download it again.  HELP!!!!

Aperture ate my picture files and they are not recoverable.  The guy at the Genius Bar told me to Trash the App, empty Trash, then go to Purchases and reinstall.  But Purchases says it is "Installed" so it does not let me download it again.  HELP!!!!

I typed Aperture into Spotlight and sure enough it did show up.
It looks like it is supposed to be in Apps.
    But it is not there.
So I clicked on the spotlight Aperture and it opened up the App!!!!
But I do not know where it is to move it!
    How can I find it?
While Aperture is running and you are seeing it in the Dock, ctrl-click (or right click) the Dock icon.
You will see a contextual menu. Click on "Options", then select "Show in Finder".
And check the "keep in Dock" mark, so you will not lose it from the Dock.

  • I bought my MacBook pro in May 2012. for whatever reason the screensaver will not turn on. Took it in to genius bar. They said the software had to be deleted and reloaded. Which they did around 3 weeks ago. Everything was working fine. Now anymore again

Is anyone else having problems with their screen saver not turning on?  My was working when I first bought the lap top. Then it stopped activating, I could get it to come on from a hot corner, or if I powered off the lap top and the next time I would boot on it would work for a few days but then it would stop. Made an appointment with the Genius bar and they suggested to wipe clean the HD and re-install the software Mountain Lion.  Which was done.  It worked fine for a few weeks, now it has stopped again, and I can not even get it to stay on by activating it from the Hot Corners.
Anyone else having the same problem?  And if so what have you done to try and correct it?  Apple ran a check on my MacBook and they said there is nothing mechanically wrong with the MacBook that it is the software?????

  • I updated my iPad to iOS7 and since then my iPad2 does not have sound (says no SOUND EFFECT). I already got it checked by Genius Bar who say that it is not a software problem.

Have done all suggested things including toggle and change in settings. Still it keeps showing a bell (which shows sound effects) but does not enable change of sound / sound in apps.
On Saturday, 3rd may2014 I got an appointment with Genius Bar at WEST 14th street NYC which initially said that this looks like settings issue. So they reset my iPad settings.
When this did not work, they also reloaded the iOS. Even that did not solve the problem. They conveyed that this is a hardware problem and thus they can solve this (except for replacement for which they will charge $250 for an iPad 2.)
However the ringer sound is coming perfect ( the sound is not available in any of the apps but the same speaker works for ringer).
HOW IS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE A HARDWARE PROBLEM THEN? ALSO WHY CAN APPLE NOT CHANGE THE SPEAKERS?
When I conveyed that this is APPLE specific issue, they flatly denied and conveyed that there are NO such cases. When I offered to show it on Aple community, they say THIS HAPPENS TO ONLY A SMALL MINORITY AND IS NOT CONSIDERED A "KNOWN ISSUE".
I HAD GONE AT THE SAME TIME FOR CHANGING MY IPHONE's speaker (for that too, they said that they can only replace my phone with a hefty payment rather than changing the speakers).
THIS AMPLY SHOWED THAT THEY HAD NO INTENTION OF SERVICING THE INSTRUMENTS AND THEY WERE ONLY THINKING OF HOW TO INCREASE SALES BY DRAWING ON THE OLD INVENTORY.
    SHOWS RIDICULOUS ATTITUDE OF APPLE.

After I upgraded to Mavericks I was also having this message when I tried to update. There was a previous post about this problem which offered this simple solution which worked for me:

Re: Recently upgraded to Maverick from SnowLeopard. Unable to get updates from App store.
Mar 15, 2014 9:05 AM (in response to Terence Devlin)
Got it! Thanx.  What I did was go to my account, check that they had my new ID and Password which they did, then hit reset button. All fixed.

  • My battery life between charges on my ipad 1 has plummeted to about 2 hours.  The guy at the genius bar suggested it might be an app (unfortunately I didn't have the device with me).  Does anyone know of apps that cause heavy drains on power?  Thanks!

The battery life between charges on my iPad has plummeted to about 2 hours.  The guy at the genius bar said the charge should last about 10 hours and suggested it might be an app (unfortunately I didn't have the device with me and the nearest Apple Store to me is 2 hours away).  Does anyone know of apps that cause heavy drains on power?  It also does not charge when it is plugged into my MacBook while I am using the iPad but it does when I am not using the iPad.  I mostly use the iPad to read e-mails, play Team Lava games, read books through iBooks or Kobo and the ABC Player.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

Restore is about the only option left, short reinstalling the whole thing as new.
Before you restore, go to I tunes and turn off automatic sync.  Then plug the machine in.  Upload any photos that you have taken with the pad into I photos, or where ever you keep your pictures.  Then, in I tunes, transfer any purchases.
If any apps or purchased music get lost in the process, you can download them again for free.
You do not want to make a backup of what you have on the pad now. If you do, when you restore, you will simply recreate the same problem.
What you want to do is restore from a prior backup.  Do that.
Then run the system status app and see what the CPU numbers look like.  If they are ok, then you can start to re add apps until the problem shows up.
If this does not do it, then the last step is to set the pad up as new.  Check the numbers, then add the apps and settings back one by one.    While it is likely to be an app, it may be a setting somewhere.

  • IMac to Genius bar 5 times, problem never solved...

I have a 2011 iMac 27" and it never had any problems.  However, a little over a month ago, it started to make a noise that sounded like a very loud fan, a high pitched cricket sound.  I decided to take it into the Apple store to get looked at and fixed.
    Trip 1:
I took the computer to my local store and informed them of the problem.  They said it sounded like a fan just like I said and they took it in.  They called me the next day to inform me that it was fixed.  When I arrived, they told me that nothing was done, they said there was a lot of dust in the computer and they blew it out and it seemed to fix the problem, so I said ok.  This trip was no charge.
When I arrived home I plugged in the computer and turned it on, the noise immeditely returned and was louder then when I dropped it off the first time, back to the Apple store.
    Trip 2:
This time I returned and I was dealing with the same guy.  I told him that when I got home it was louder than when I dropped it off.  He said that well it must be the fan then and that they would open up the machine and replace it.  I left it again overnight and was called again the next day to pick it up and was relieved that it was fixed.  I returned to the Apple store and picked up my machine.  This trip I paid for labor and parts.
When I returned home, the computer seemed ok for about an hour or so.  Once the computer got going and heated up, the noise was back and never stopped.
I was pretty upset and was a little frustrated that it was still making noise.  At this time I was finishing up the semester of school and needed my computer so it was a day or two before I could return to the store.
    Trip 3:
When I returned to the Apple store this time, I again met with the same employee.  He was aware of the issue at this point and apologized.  He heard the noise again in full blast and said that it must be coming from the other fan.  The first fan they replaced was the optical drive fan and this time they were goign to replace the CPU fan.  I was frustrated but I just wanted it fixed.  I dropped it off and was just hoping this would be solved.  They replaced the fan and I once again picked it up.  This time I didnt pay for labor but I did have to pay for the new fan, even though I previously paid for a fan that I didn't need.
The same as last time, when I returned home, the computer was ok for a little bit of time and then once the computer got started up again, it was very loud.  At this point I was getting upset but I didn't know what the options were excecpt to bring it back in.
    Trip 4:
This time at the Apple store, the old employee saw me come in with the iMac and no joke, he ignored me.  He was with another customer but he never looked in my direction once, even when he had to go into the back or in a drawer.  I even jokingly said to him, "the noise just won't go away man" and he didn't even look up at me.  This time my computer wouldn't even turn on, the new genius had plugged it in with two different cords and outlets and it wasn't turning on.  I told the employee that it was working fine when I turned it off to bring it in and etc.  He wrote up a report that said it wasn't turning on and that they would have to fix that issue before they could troubleshoot the noise.  Right before I left I asked, could we please try to turn it on one more time before I go.  It instantly turned on and it was loud.  This employee said it was coming from the power supply and that it was that fan or the unit itself.  So I dropped it off.
I was called the next day to pick it up.  To note, I was never called to tell me what the issue was or if it was ok to fix it or at what price.  This time I went to pick it up and they had replaced the power supply.  I asked why I was being charged as it was the 4th time it has been in for the same issue and all they did for me was take about 50% off the price.  I still had to pay for the labor and parts with a discount.  I didn't feel like making a scene since I felt like it was finally fixed and over with.
As before, the computer was very loud and the noise never went away.  I couldn't help but think to myself, are they just opening the computer, replacing these parts at random and just hoping it works.  All it would take is to have the computer running with it open and stop each fan one by one to see if the noise stops and if it does, replace that fan, if not, it's something else.  I have no idea what they are doing in there.
    Trip 5:
There was no way that I was going to return to the same store.  I drove an hour away to go to another Apple store.  I dropped it off, explained all the issues and the same issue of not turning on happened.  Once again, it worked fine at home, besides the noise, but wouldn't turn on at Apple.  This time we never got it started.  He said that it was the power supply.  When I picked it up, they had replaced the power supply and charged me nothing.  I remember walking out of the store with my girlfriend and making a bet that the issue wouldn't be fixed.
When I got home, the computer was quiet and I was finally like omg, is it possible.  Unfortunetaly I was only able to test it for a few minutes as I had to leave for a trip to my brothers wedding for a week.  I got home last night and turned on my computer, and the noise was right there, loud as ever.
I have made 5 trips to the Apple store, paid multiple times, lots of gas and the issue is not fixed.  I have no idea what to do at this point and I am really frustrated.  It is almost impossible to sit here to even write this listening to the noise.
Who do I need to write, what do I do to solve this?
Here is a video I just recorded of the noise:

    Thanks,
    Chris

Though if the system was out of warranty you would have rightly paid for a repair, the fact that you were apparently charged for unnecessary repairs would most certainly seem to me to be incorrect and unfair.
Did you talk to the manager of the Apple Store about the issue? If not, I would suggest you first do that. Call the store, ask to speak with the manager, and calmly explain the situation, explaining that you paid for multiple repairs that did not solve the problem and that the "shotgun" approach the technician took toward solving the problem was unprofessional and led to you having to pay for multple repairs that still have not solved the problem.
If the store manager will not help, call Apple Customer Relations at 1-800-767-2775, again calmly and politely explain the entire situation, and ask for help in obtaining a real resolution to the problem. At the minimum I would expect that all of the charges currently incurred should be refunded to you since none have corrected the problem, though of course I can't speak for Apple and so can't guaranteee what resolution if any they'll offer.
    Regards.
