Getting into my library

I had to reinstall windows on my computer, well now when i plug my ipod into my computer it recognizes my ipod but will not let me access my library. Basically it wants me to sync my ipod but this will make me lose all of my songs on my ipod, when all i really want to do is get into my original library. Any answers?

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc. press "Cancel". Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list, from there click on the iPod icon to bring up the Summary tab and change the update setting to manually manage songs and videos and click Apply. Once you are in manual mode you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Once you are connected you can change the setting to manual as described above: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
If you had no back up for your original library and lost the songs when you reinstalled Windows. once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

SharePod Windows Only
iPodRip Mac & Windows

Music Rescue Mac & Windows
iPodCopy Mac and Windows

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync

Thank You. This helps me alot to get into the masters and to see events and photos in a utilitarian way, but it is not as easy as viewing the normal iphoto format to find photos.  Can I do something else or did I not do something right to not see normal iphoto in Time Machine ?

You may be able to extract the hard drive from the broken computer, mount it in an external drive bay and recover the library from it. Otherwise see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • HT1349 "iTunes has stopped working" and I can't get into my library..what do I do now?

When I try to get into my itunes icon, a message comes up saying 'iTunes is not working'.  I am beside myself as I have a lot of musice in this account. I can't get in on my computer (windows 7 professional) & therefore also not on my apple tv.  Now what? It's been working fine until now!!!  And I hate apple phone support! It is non-existent for this!

That looks like a GPU issue (or possibly a display problem, but less likely).  Your best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  They will be able to give you a definitive diagnosis for FREE.  I note that you have a pre-unibody MBP which they may or may not offer to repair, depending upon the age.
    Ciao.

  • I can't get iphoto to launch anymore. Can't get into iphoto library either

We have iphoto 7.1.5.  I can no longer get iphoto to open at all.  It immediately tells me there was a problem launching the application.  We recently added dropbox and I wonder if that is interfering in some way.  In an effort to fix the problem, I disabled the automatic connection between dropbox and my computer (I think.)  Also removed Mackeeper as mentioned in other posts.  Any suggestions?

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new iPhoto 08 library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • ITunes won't allow me to get into any library or playlist?

After updateing to the new iTunes 10.5, everytime I try and access my music library or anyother tab on the left hand side of iTunes, all I get is a red cirle with a line through it and it won't allow me access.
    Starting to get really frustrating!
Can anyone help and tell me why it might be doing this?

You are signed in with the same account that you originally bought them with, and they are exactly the same albums e.g. the versions that you bought haven't been removed and new/different versions put in the store instead ? What you can redownload will show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage - you could also check to see if they are hidden : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919

  • Problem with getting into iPhoto library after downloading an update for iPhoto. It is saying it is locked on a locked disk. how do we fix this?

Have an OS X 10.9.4 and having problems with iPhoto library after installing iPhoto version 9.5.1 This has locked the iPhoto Library on a locked disk. Any idea on how we unlock this disk?

First, if you've moved the iPhoto library to an external drive, make sure that drive is mounted by opening it in the Finder.
The issue can be caused by sharing the photo library on a network (against Apple's advice) or by opening it in more than one local user account at the same time. You may be able to clear the error by logging out or restarting the computer. If not, do as follows.
Quit iPhoto if it's running, locally or on any file-sharing client. Select the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Usually it's in the Pictures folder, but you may have moved it somewhere else. Right-click or control-click the library icon and select
              Show Package Contents
from the popup menu. In the folder that opens, navigate to
    Database/apdb/lockfile.pid
and move that file, if it exists, to the Trash. Close the Finder window.

  • HT4915 When i did my itunes match, there were some duplicated albums and songs.  I have gone into my library and deleted the duplicates, but they still show up on my iphone as duplicates.  What can i do to get rid of them?

When I did my itunes match, there were some duplicated albums and songs in my library.  I have gone back into my library from my computer, and deleted the duplicates.  When I did so, itunes did not ask me if I wanted to delete them from the cloud.  They are still showing up on my iphone as duplicates in the cloud.  What can I do to get them from showing up in my iphone?

They are not on the iphone in the first place.  It is just a setting that allows you to see the songs that are available in icloud, but not on your iphone.  If you turn the setting to off, then you no longer see the songs that are in icloud, but NOT on your iphone.

    Hello there, Capricious13.
There are great pointers in the following Knowledge Base article. Depending on where you see the content and where you want to get it to, this should guide you to putting it in the right place:

  • When I try to sync my music on my iPhone 4 I have a tab at the top that says 'on this iPhone' The music in that tab is always on my phone but does not show in my itunes library.  How can I get it into my library?

When I try to sync my music on my iPhone 4 I have a tab at the top that says 'on this iPhone'.  This is at the end of all the other tabs like info, ringtones, music etc. The music in that tab is always on my phone but does not show in my itunes library.  How can I get it into my library?  It doesn't sync either.

The new iTunes has a somewhat different look from the previous version.  You can get the old look back if you prefer it by doing View > Show Sidebar in iTunes.  Or you can adapt to the new look.

  • HT1660 i have two independent itunes libraries on my computer right now. how do i consolidate them into one library? how do i get rid of duplicate files?

i have two independent itunes libraries on my computer right now. how do i consolidate them into one library? how do i get rid of duplicate files?

    Hello rmunsey,
Thank you for the question.  It sounds like you have two separate iTunes Libraries but would like to add the music from one to the other to have one consolidated library.
If you know where the files are for each library, I recommend opening one iTunes Library in iTunes and importing the files from the other library using the following steps:
    Open iTunes
From the File menu, choose one of the following choices:
    MacAdd to Library
    Windows
    Add File to Library
    Add Folder to Library
Navigate to and select the file or folder that you want to add
Adding music and other content to iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1473
Next, you can search for duplicates:
Choose View > Show Duplicate Items to show duplicate items (matches are based on the song name and artist). If you have multiple versions of the same song (for example, live and studio versions, or versions from different albums) you can hold the Alt or Option key (for Mac OS X) or the Shift key (for Windows) and choose View > Show Exact Duplicate Items. This will show only duplicate songs having the same name, artist, and album.
How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2905
This should help you identify the duplicates all at one time so that you can delete the extra versions of songs.

  • Can't get songs from my iPod into the library on my new mac

I recently had to get a new hard-drive on my dell laptop, and iTunes was uninstalled from the computer. When I re-installed iTunes, my iPod was not being recognized by the laptop, so none of my songs on my iPod were in the library anymore.
Now I have a new MacBook, and my iPod is being recognized, but I can't get most of my songs from my iPod into the library in iTunes.
I'm sure there is an easy solution, but I can't figure it out!

  • I have updated iTunes on my computer and my iPod nano 4 is up to date but not all music shows up in my iTunes library..only the purchased songs..what happened and how do I get them back into the library?

The music library in the updated version of iTunes is grossly incomplete although the music still remains on my iPod. Why did this happen and how do I get the music back into the library?

    Hi Dalegu219,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iTunes library is on an external hard drive, but iTunes is not recognizing the library, first make sure the right library is selected.
You can use these steps to make sure iTunes is opening the library on your external drive:
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you're using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu, choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
If you're using a Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
You should see one of these screens:
Pick Choose Library and locate the library on your external hard drive.
    From:
iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one - Apple Support
If the right library is selected, but you do not see your songs, try re-creating the library using the instructions found here:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists - Apple Support
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

Are you sure it was error 0604 since I never heard of that error, it does not appear in the list of errors in the following and a search of Apple's support site gets no hits.  However, error 1604 is list and users have reported that error number.  If 1604 is the error number the following tell yu wnat to do when you click on that error number:
