Getting rotating volume knob to work on HP keyboard

My Apple keyboard recently stopped recognizing the Tab key, so I dug an old HP keyboard out of the closet, model #3502H ("Designed for WIndows 98" it says on the botton). I don't care about most of the spurious buttons scattered around the periphery, with the exception of the play controls for iTunes.
The stop, previous, play/pause, next, mute and eject button all work, but the volume knob, a rotating dial, doesn't. And I tweak my playback volume a lot during the day.
Is there any way to get this to function? I seem to have a vague memory of using this keyboard for a while under OS X 10.5 and the volume worked fine then, but not under 10.6.6 it seems.
If there's no way to force the OS to recognize the volume knob how can I assign F-keys to volume up and down? I looked in the Keyboard pref pane and those don't seem to be listed.
Thanks.

I wrote three Applescripts and saved them as applications (AppleScript Editor is in the Utilities folder). I use a program called FastScripts (free if you use less then 10 scripts I think) to assign them to function keys. It's not a perfect solution but it works most of the time. An example of when it doesn't work is when I'm playing a game that completely takes over the screen.
Decrease volume script:
tell application "iTunes" to set vol to sound volume
set vol to vol - 5
tell application "iTunes" to set sound volume to vol
Increase volume script:
tell application "iTunes" to set vol to sound volume
set vol to vol + 5
tell application "iTunes" to set sound volume to vol
Play/Pause script:
tell application "iTunes" to playpause

  • Volume keys not working on wireless keyboard

    Hi guys!
My f10-11-12 keys are not working for volume purposes. I went into prefereces, keyboard, uncheck/check the "use F1, F2... blahblah" and the problem is still there.
    I am using a macbookpro 13" 10.6.6.
By the way, if I try to do the same in the built-in macbookpro keyboard it works
This post did not help either https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2298682?start=0&tstart=0
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for asnwering... Yes, of course I have tried because is how it works
It could be that fn key does not work, but it isnt since If I uncheck the box "use fn key for f1 f2 standar.." the volume keys still not working.

  • How can I get the volume to work on my ipad after the iOS 7.02 update?

The performance of my ipad plummeted after the iOS 7 and 7.0.2 updates. The apps crash and some do not work at all and worst of all, my volume does not work at all. Is there a way I can at least get the volume to work?
I was planning on purchasing a MacBook Pro but with all these issues I am reconsidering.

I have tried changing the volume both by using the volume buttons on the side and through settings.  I have updated all the apps. Closed and reopened a million times hoping it was just a one time deal but I have had continuous problems since the update on my ipad.
I love the update on my iphone but for some reason the ipad did not adjust well.  I really would like to get it fixed because I love my ipad but there is no use when the apps an volume do not work.

  • When I get a phone call or text message it will not make the sound. Just vibrate. But the switch is on normal. When I change it to vibrate the volume thing will not show. Nor will my up volume up key work. Is there any way to fix it?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

Without more information on your problem all I can suggest is:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • TS3274 How can I get the volume to work?

We have an iPad but can't get the volume to work?

Alright now if you are talking about issues using Safari, here a few things that you can try.
    1. Quit Safari completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    2. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    3. Clear Safari. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • I can't get the volume to work when I use firefox. It does work on internet explorer. What is going on?

I downloaded firefox in order to do some online training that I couldn't open in any other browser. I can't get the volume to work in this browser. I can use internet explorer and the volume works. But I can only do the training through firefox.

You can click the Volume icon on the Windows Taskbar near the clock and click the Mixer link at the bottom to open the mixer.<br />
You can adjust the volume level for each application in that window, so make sure that Firefox is not muted or set at a low level.<br />
Current Firefox versions use the plugin-container process to run plugins, so you need to check the volume setting for the plugin-container process.<br />
You will only see the Firefox program or the Plugin Container in the Mixer if you are on a website that plays sound.<br />

If in settings, music, volume limit is off then restart your phone first. Hold the home and off button down until the apple symbol comes up.

  • How do I get my volume to work?

I have the iphone4s and my volume won't work anymore. When I push the buttons on the side the little ringer icon shows up but not the little bar that tells you how high or low the volume is. Every now and then the volume will go on by itself but it only stays on for a couple seconds. When I talk on the phone it works and Siri works so it's not the speakers. Also I tried using a Bluetooth speaker and the volume doesn't work for that, but when I use an iHome it does work. Also when I FaceTime my volume works. But I can't play music or watch videos anymore.
I tried my headphones to see what would happen and at first they worked. But sometimes the music would stop and the same thing happened. There was no volume bar. So I unplugged my headphones and put them back in. That seemed to work and I just got used to listening to music like that. But these past couple days my headphones are hardly working and I'm so frustrated. Can someone please help with my problem.

    Hello there, Fruitloops25.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps for troubleshooting the issue you're describing:
iPhone: No sound or distorted sound from speaker
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts5180
Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
    Try turning off Bluetooth.
If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    Restart the iPhone.
If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
If the issue is not resolved, please contact Apple Support.
