GoPro Hero 3 Black .mp4 footage import--current best way?

I've read a lot in these forums about importing .mp4 footage into FCPX.  It seems that it used to be the case (and maybe still is?) that FCPX either wouldn't import .mp4 files, or wouldn't do a good or reliable job if it did.
I've been shooting some footage with a GoPro Hero 3 Black.  FCPX seems to import it just fine.  But I'm not sure if that's the best way to do it?  Should I be using another program (like GoPro's Cineform software) to first convert the Hero 3 .mp4 files to .mov files?  Or should I just let FCPX do it?
Also, I noticed something that seems odd when I'm importing these .mp4 files:  If I import them directly from the SD card that the GoPro stores them on, I can select in and out points in the .mp4 clips I'm importing.  But if I first copy the .mp4 files from the SD card to one of my hard drives, I cannot select in and out points when importing (I have to import the entire clip).  Why is this?
(I should mention, in case it is relevant, that the clips I cannot select in and out points for [the ones that I first copied to my hard drive] are 1080p 60 fps, and the ones that I can select in and out points for [the ones I'm importing directly from the card] are 720p 120 fps.)

This is easy. I do it all the time. FCPX ingests GoPro footage just fine. Optimize, and you're good to go.
BTW: A common hiccup occurs when dealing with over-cranked footage. (60fps or 120fps.) Be sure to "conform speed" to actuate the slo-mo. 'Tis also important to designate your project / timeline at 24fps or 30fps to realize the speed difference.
I've gotten burned in the past. I'll drag my over-cranked GoPro footage to the timeline. As it is the "first" clip layed into the timeline, the project assumes THAT speed as a default. (As per my preferences.) Thus, when I "conform speed," nothing seems to happen. That's because my project is displaying at the higher rate. A 60fps timeline showing footage shot at 60fps looks "normal speed."
FYI. (And disregard if you know all this.)

  • GoPro Hero Black 4k Project/Import Settings?

I've tried to import GoPro Hero3 Black MP4 footage into PP5.5 but only the audio imports so I'm assuming PP5.5 can't handle MP4's.  So, I'm having Cineform, a GoPro product, convert to AVI which is easily imported.
However, I'm not clear on how to set up a project for GoPro 4K footage.  Indeed, I'm not clear on the implications of the many choices one has when setting up a project.  If I choose the wrong one the project won't work?
    Thank you!

With this mixed bag of assets, you are going to have to compromise.
At first blush, I might want to start with a 3K sequence... up-scaling
the 1080, and downscaling the 4K.
If this ends up not working out, you can create a new Sequence with
different settings and copy / paste the clips into the new Sequence.
Your mix of frame rates is another issue.
I would pick the frame rate of the primary media source (hopefully
the 3K), and work in a Sequence that matches that frame rate.
If I set it to 1080 do I only get a small portion of the 3K and 4K footage?  Conversely, if I set it for 4K, are there huge black borders around the 3k and 2K footage?
    No.
You will use 'Scale to Frame Size' in the timeline
or a Motion Effect > Scale / Position to fill the frame.

    Hello,
I have a problem reading GoPro Hero Black 4 files (1080p 120 fps) on my iMac with Adobe Premiere Elements : the file is read but the quality is quite bad. When I watch it with other software like VLC or MPC, the quality is perfect but the video is sometimes slowed or there are some jumps in the reading.
What is the issue with this ?

  • Current (LV2012) best way to serve data across platforms

I'm interested in hearing what people would regard as the current best way do the following:
I'd like to publish data from labview in a format that can be read over a network across platforms. The data should be not just be visible, but it should be fairly simple for someone writing their own code, say on a Unix machine, to integrate this data into their programs. Some more specific are probably in order. In its simplest form we would like to transfer a 1d array of doubles (say of length  30) plus an image file (say 600x400 pixel jpeg) and update about every 5 second. The "client" would just read this data in at need, and there is no requirement that the client be able to access data other than the current data cluster at the moment it read the data -  unread data is just thrown away when the next update arrives. Is a webservice the only/best way to do this at this time?

you might want to check Shared Variables (OPC)
A stupid thought maybe, but File IO is always a possiblity as well, might not be the best one, but will certainly work....

  • GoPro 3 Hero Black

HiI wrote to support and told them, that my mini SD Extreme Pro card does not work in my GoPro 3 Hero Black Edition, but they had never heard about the problem before. So I send them this: -------- The card is placed in my GoPro Hero 3 Black and is skipping frames. When I import it into FCP frames are missing. I read about other having the same problem here:abekislevitz.com/understanding-your-gopro-part-2/One guy wrote: SD card fables:

I bought a Sandisk Ultra 64GB with my Gopro 3 black in China. Since the recording of sound is out of phase with the image, and the image is not smooth, perhaps missing frames, I bought a Supreme PRO micro SD 64GB . Since the performance was still not good at all, I updated the camera firmware. The recording is strange. It appears to delay recording and is skipping frames, but this behaviour repeats identically every one (or two) seconds. Testing both memories with adapter on a lapto with h2testw t I got 9MB/s for Ultra and 18MB/s for Supreme PRO for writing.  To be honest, after updating the camera firmware, the performance of the Ultra is much better than the Supreme Pro. The question are:Are there too many fakes Sandisk out there? How adequate the Sandisk are for Gopro cameras? Is Sandisk selling defectives memories cheaply instead of destroying them? The Supreme Pro memory was bought at mercadolivre.com.br with a vendor called Silvio Saito.I lost confidence for both Sandisk and Gopro. By extreme coincidence, Gopro 3 Black Edition has been badly regarded by many people. Silver Edition appears to be better. I also heard that Gopro does not accept big memories. thanksCarlos

  • What is the best way to import and edit a large amount of footage?

    Hello Apple world,
As a newbie to Final Cut 10 I have a question regarding best ways to import footage. I'll give you a quick run down.
I have a 150 gig of gopro footage that I just hit 'import' to recently (from my external HD), it took around 10 hours to process it all.
Its all under one event, but then somewhat organised into dates etc. But it is very slow. I imported it all at once because it was all footage from the last 6 months of my Whistler/states/fiji trip and want to make a movie out of it, using clips from all over the time, not just in chronological order.
I have the latest mac book pro, 4 gig ram,2.4 GHz i7, 750 hard drive, with nothing else on the computer.
Ive read about creating proxy media, after ive imported, but am still somewhat confused as to the benefit. Does it create duplicates? that will fill up my pretty large HD as it is!
Can you suggest any ways that might make my laptop run a bit faster? Should i delete and work directly from external HD etc etc?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

    Hello,
I have a one question  is GoPro HERO 3 black available in stores now?
Or i have to Pre-order it or what?
I just want to go store and buy it.

    Hey repsuke,
Thanks for getting back to me on this. The only store in El Paso that might have one of these in stock is the store on Viscount Blvd. The best I can suggest is to try calling them, and ask if they can physically verify that this is in stock. All the stores in El Paso have this on order.

  • Premier CS6 importing 4k C-LOG Footage?? Best steps to import??

Premier CS6 importing 4k C-LOG Footage?? Best steps to import??

Are you speaking of the Canon 1D-C?  If so, I had good luck with the following workflow:
First, I used the EOS Movie Utility for the 1D-C to "stitch" together files into the original "broken" takes.  Double the media but c'est la vie!
Next, I used Mpeg Streamclip to transcode the motion jpeg files into 422 Prores files at the same size.  Those files imported beautifully and play well inside of Premiere.

  • Export GoPro Hero 4 2.7K video as 1080p leaves black bar on rendered video

    Hi,
I want to downscale and export some videos I shot with my Go Pro Hero4 Black at 2.7K resolution (2704x1520) to 1920x1080 with premier Pro CC. Every time I do (I have tried different render settings and codecs) I always end up with a thin black line across the very bottom bottom of the video. Anyone know how I can scale the video to fit 1920x1080 without this thin black line appearing?

Even if you shoot at 2.7K or 4K and put it in a timeline, render it out at 1080p you will see better results than shooting at 1080p.  I shoot in 4K with the goPro Hero 4 black and the GH4.  4K is great.
I thought apple would allow us to export 4K from iMovie 10.0.06 but you can only share a 4K clip in the browser not the entire project.  hopefully this is just an update away.
FCPX is the way to go with 4K.

  • Can't do GoPro Hero 3 lens corrections in Photoshop CC

I'm a creative cloud subscriber. I just watched a great video on Adobe TV showing me how Photoshop CC can do lens corrections for GoPro Hero 3 black edition cameras. However, when I imported my GoPro Hero 3 footage into Photoshop CC, GoPro did not appear as a camera maker. I shot the video in 1080, with ProTune on, in Camera RAW. Maybe that's why I don't see GoPro... Any ideas?

I was initially mystified by this as well.  Here is what I finally figured out:
    1.  From bridge, open a GoPro .mp4 file in Photoshop.
    2.  Filter > Lens Correction.  Pull down GoPro under camera; GoPro Hero 3 Black under camera model and lens.
    3.  Click OK.
To add additional video clips, hit the "+" sign at the right side of the Timeline panel.  Apply the Lens Correction filter to these, as well.

  • Frame rate issues with GoPro Hero

    Hi everyone,
I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 on a Windows XP machine.
I'm very new to the world of editing so please bear with me.
I have a GoPro Hero 1080p camera and I'm filming motorsport.
I have been recording in 1080p but after doing some research most people seem to be recording in 720p which utilises 60fps in the NTSC setting.
When I come to edit in Adobe the imported clips are shown as 59.96fps not 60fps! The closest I can get is 59.94fps. The outputed footage looks awful.
These are the project settings I have used:
It might be worth explaing that the fottage is stored on the memory card as a .avi. My method of importing the clips is to change the file extention to .mov and then Adobe excepts them. Is this the best method?
Sorry for the all the long winded questions but all help would be greatly receieved.
    Thanks in advance.
    Nick

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I am alot closer to being able to finally edit my video.
Bill, your article was just what I needed, so thank you.
This link seems to have a good amount of info plus this one from Bill has pointed me in the right direction.
I believe the below settings are right for my 720P 60fps (well 59.94 after converting from MP4 to .MOV)
I am now unsure whether to use DROP-FRAME TIMCODE, NON DROP-FRAME TIMECODE or FRAMES?
Please bear with me, sorry for all the questions! The next bit is what file format and compressor to use.
I am trying to make the footage for YouTube. I believe these 2 sections will make my project settings perfect for the footage.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Premiere CC for Mac - How do I fix fisheye from a GoPro Hero 3+ video?

    Hi all,
First up, I'm very new to Premiere - my experience is probably less than 2 hours at this point.  To disspell any concern over whether or not I'm using a licensed copy of Pr - yes, I am.  I subscribe to Creative Cloud because of my need for Lr, Ps and Ai.
Anyway, I've got a GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition camera and would like to learn how to remove the fisheye effect caused by the crazy wide video that produces.  In 1920x1080 "SuperView" I think it's some like 170+ degrees of view vs 127 degrees in "normal" wide mode.  Those figures might not be 100% correct but they're close.
With SuperView there's some insane fisheye going on - as you'd expect, I guess.  Using the GoPro software there's an option to remove it but that produces video with an aspect ratio that looks squashed.  People are super tall and I lose some of the captured video at the top & bottom when watching.
In Premiere for Windows, I believe there's a video effect calls Lens Distortion - it's not there on my Mac version of Premiere CC.  The tutorial I watched set the Lens Distortion to -27 and I'd like to try it.  Can't though - that effect isn't there.
Is it possible to remove fisheye using Premiere CC for Mac only i.e. completely bypass the GoPro software?  If anyone's wondering why I want to bypass the GoPro software - the answer is "just coz."
    Thanks

The 2014 release of Premiere Pro CC now has presets for specific GoPro models. This is true in PPro for Mac, too. Check out the Effects tab in the Project panel: Presets > Lens Distortion Removal > GoPro > [your specific model] > [your specific GoPro footage's mode]. Drag the effect to your clip and watch the barrel distortion go away.
