GTX 680 as dedicated GPU

Is it possible to run a GTX 680 as a dedicated GPU in a MacPro along side of a stock ATI card that still performs as a display card?
Is it possible to power both cards with some kind of mod to the wiring harnesses inside the box, preferably that ?
Are there any configs needed within the OS or CS6 apps to get AE to utilize the GTX card?
I know Davinci Resolve can use GTX cards as GPU engines in a non-display mode.  We are looking to outfit a few MacPros like this and could use some guidance.  Thanks in advance for replies.

let me ask this question another way...
...Will AE get any kind of boost from running multiple GTX 680s?  Is there anything under the hood that has to happen to point AE at the additional GPU/CUDA cores?

    Have Radeon card in Mac Pro 5,1 driving 27" display. Want to use a GTX 680 for its GPU processing capability and continue using the Radeon for CPU display. Can I use 680 for GPU only? (No output connection used.)

    We just bought a GTX 680 to test on one of our editing suites, as a cheaper and still viable ugrade vs. buying all new MAC Pro's all around.
    So far, the installation of the card and setup has been easier than anything I've ever done on the PC end.
    MAC have the most beutifull insides of a computer I can ever imagine. Soooo pretty... *geek drool*
    But back on track!
    We've used the "hack" earlier to get some if the iMACs we have as well to support CUDA in Premiere and AfterEffects, however when applying this same "hack" to the GTX680 on a MAC Pro, I dont get CUDA listed as a rendering option in either PR or AE.
    Works fine on our iMACs, but I just cant get this one to work.
    (And by "hack" I mean adding the graphics card to the list of supported cards in the CUDA supported GPU list.

    I Installed the card Opned a PP file, went to project settings, grayed out  says Mercury Playback Software only, running OSX mavericks 10.9.2, NVIDIA driver NVIDIA CUDA 5.5.47 for MAC OS X release released 2014.03.05, going crazy cant get it to work

    Allent sorry for the late reply, I got premiere to see my card and activate the GPU acceleration but not open CL for some reason, heres an old article from a year ago that helped me get it to work, according to EVGA and Adobe I shoudlnt have to use this a hack, I did and now it least premiere pro is using Cuda.     Ive got the Creative Cloud deal, so my software is up to date (CS6) as of 8/16/12, and after installing my new GTX 680 4GB card and enabling it in Premiere and After Effects, I see a nice performance gain over my older GTX 550 ti 1.5GB.
    When I drop a finished H.264 Blu-ray file into a sequence and export it from Premiere into AME, my graphics card shows about 40-60% regular usage throughout the encoding, no matter what format I am exporting to. But if I just drop the same original H.264 file into AME and set it to the exact same encode output preset, then the graphics card is not used at all.
    Also, when you run GPUSniffer in the Encore program folder, you can see that it will not accept this card for GPU utilization. Ive looked all around for the Encore list of cards database it is pulling from, and Ive concluded that it must be in a compiled DLL file, so unlike Premiere, you cant modify it to detect the GPU. AME does not have either the list of supported cards or the GPUSniffer program in its program folder, so both of these programs will need the GTX 680 added to its list of supported cards by Adobe directly with an update, like they did with After Effects CS6.
    I can only imagine that transcoding in either programs would benefit from CUDA accelleration, like a few other transcoding apps out there already use.
    If Adobe is listening, the #1 thing I (all of us?) want in CS6 is for all transcoding products (Premiere direct export & projects, After Effects, Media Encoder direct file import, Encore) to utilize GTX 670 680 and 690 cards for accelleration out of the box. I dont want to use some 3rd party transcoder to get GPU aided transcoding, I want my CS6 Master Collection to be able to do it. Not too much to ask right?

    Hi, I have written a 'proof-of-concept' (i.e. unsupported beta) NVidia H264-encoder plugin for Adobe Premeire Pro CS6. If you are interested in trying it, go the following forum-post:http://forums.adobe.com/message/5458381
    Couple of notes:
    (0) GPU requirement: NVidia "Kepler" GPU or later (desktop GTX650 or higher, laptop GT650M or higher.)  The plugin uses the new dedicated hardware-encoder (NVENC) introduced with the 2012 Kepler GPU.
    (1) the "ideal" best-case speedup (over Mainconcept H264) is roughly 4-5x on a consumer desktop PC (single-socket PC, Intel i5-3570K).  Naturally actual results vary on the source-video/render.
    (2) Interlaced video encoding is NOT supported.  (I couldn't get this to work; I think it's a GPU-driver issue.)  
    (3) Only uncompressed PCM-audio is supported (no AAC/AC-3 audio.) Also, multiplexing is limited to MPEG-2 TS.  If you want to generate *.MP4 files, you'll need to do your own offline postprocessing outside of Adobe.
    (4) In terms of picture-quality (artifacts, compression efficiency), NVidia hardware (GPU) encoding is still inferior to software-only solutions (such as Mainconcept or x264.)
    In short, don't expect the NVENC-plugin to replace software-encoding any time soon.  It's not a production-quality product.  And even if it were, software-encoding still has a place in a real workflow;  until consumer hardware-GPU encoding can match the video-quality of the Mainconcept encoder, you'll still be using Mainconcept to do your final production video renders.
    cuda is meant for general computing including encoding.
    if you performe h246 encoding using cuda on gtx680 it can be done 1 minutes for a video that takes 90 minutes on i7 cpu.
    At that speed, the output of the hardware-encoder would be so poor, the video may as well be disposable.  NVENC is NOT faster than Intel Quicksync; actually Quicksync can be substantially faster.  But NVENC (currently) holds the slight edge in compression-quality.
    Off on a tangent, CUDA in MPE acceleration offers both speed-advantage and quality-advantage, because the CUDA video-frame processing is highly parallelizable, and can exploit the GPU's numerous floating-point computational-arrays to speed-up processing and do more complex processing.  That's a double-win.  So what does this have to do with encoding?  Right now, hardware video-encoding (which comes after the video-rendering step) only offers improved speed.  My experience with NVENC has shown me it does not improved video-quality.  At best, it is comparable to good (and slower) software-encoding when allowed high video-bitrates.  At lower video-bitrates (such as Youtube streaming), software-encoding is still A LOT better.

  • $4300 build - i7 3930 / GTX 680 - did I screw it up?

    Hello everybody-
    I am finally (actually) going to build my first editing PC, and I would like a once-over from the community to see if I've made any glaringly bad choices here.  I plan on using this machine to edit mostly DSLR H.264 & AVCHD codecs using CS6 and After Effects, but I would be happy if it could also handle the occasional higher-bandwidth footage, say 2k or 4k resolution files from a RED camera or Alexa?
    Also I opted not to attempt a huge monstrous RAID array in this build, at least at first, but I would like the leeway to go down that path in a few years if I need to.
    Big questions still in my mind that I would like some input on:
    1)  Cooling.  Can I rely on stock fans that come with my case or should I plan on replacing them with better ones?  What's the best way to decide what cooling configuration to use in my box?  Should I plan on using things like RAM cooling or dedicated disc cooling?
    2)  I have a few hundred bucks left in my budget, but if I don't have to spend it I'd rather not.  If you had $300 or so left to pump into improvements to this build, how would you spend it?

    It is not recommended to use the Powercon (or any other square wave generating UPS for that matter) with a Silverstone power supply, or just about any current high end power supply out there today. Unfortunately, the sine-wave models are quite a bit more expensive. Just do a Google search if you want to learn more about why today's high-end power supplies don't like square wave power if you are curious.
    Here's what I know about a few of APC's SmartUPS line which does provide true sine-wave output:
    - SUA1500 unit is rated at 980 watts and would absolutely be strong enough for your build; even with a 1500 watt rated power supply you will not be exceeding what this unit can provide. I love this model and use it for an overclocked 6-core rig with 10+ drives and the current it provides is more solid than the wall socket in my study at home (has Corsair AX1200 p/s). When a render kicks in, the ups often senses "brownout" (not enough voltage) and starts powering the PC instead of letting the wall socket do it alone.
    - SUA2200 units are rated for 1980 watts but they are VERY heavy. I used to have both a APC UPS 2200 and 3000 model and got tired of the man-handling that is required to lift or move the bulk.
    - APC SmartUPS units are very expensive new, but very affordable on CraigsList. I picked up two SUA1500 units that looked like new but were 3 to 5 years old and there batteries were completely shot - one was $60, the other $75. eBay has them too, but shipping is pretty high because they are so heavy. New batteries are just under $200.
    - I only have SUA units; APC replaced this line with "LCD" SmartUPS models about a year ago. I don't recommend used SmartUPS models that do not have a USB connection for your PC. First of all serial ports are not compatible with most new PCs and more importantly these units could be REALLY old (6-10+ years old).

  • Photoshop CC 2014.2.1 not detecting my dedicated GPU

    When I open Photoshop, I get the following error message:
    "3D features require a minimum of 512MB of vRAM. Photoshop has detected less than that on your system.
    Updating the driver of your graphics card may resolve the issue."
    I am running a laptop PC with an integrated graphics card (Intel HD4600) and a dedicated Nvidia GTX 675M with 2 GB of vRAM.
    I switch between the two adapters with the press of a single button, for power-saving purposes.
    I always run at high-performance with the dedicated GPU active when running Photoshop.
    I run the latest driver from Nvidia, and in the Nvidia control panel I manually set the preferences for Photoshop to utilize the dedicated GPU. But it still does not detect my main graphics adapter.
    I checked the system information in Photoshop and cannot make sense of it. Why would it be unable to detect the GPU when every GPU demanding software I have run so far (a lot) have been able to..
    I have checked google and the very forums and found the problem in various forms with no real solution for it so far. Hopefully someone on these forums can help, considering I am paying a monthly fee for the program and the support that comes with it

    But as mentioned in my initial post, I deactivate the integrated graphics adapter when using Photoshop, or any software that demands decent graphical processing power.
    I only have it activated when in power-saving mode. And of course I update to the newest display drivers via the GeForce Experience or through their website.
    Point is, I have never had any problems with any software whatsoever in detecting the proper GPU and utilizing it's power. The only software unable to register my dedicated video card is Photoshop.

    I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
    What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
    I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!

    Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
    Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
    Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?

  • Ref GTX 680 2nd DVI port stopped working

    I'm having trouble with my GTX 680 second DVI port. It seems to register that it's connected, but doesn't have any signal.
    Now, it's worked perfectly for weeks... until I replugged it yesterday.
    My set-up (that used to work):
    >DVI port 1 goes to main monitor
    >DVI port 2 goes to second monitor
    >HDMI port clones DVI port 2 and goes to TV
    And this is what I did:
    >Unplug 2nd DVI port, use it temporarily for another machine
    >Replug hours later, not working
    And what I've tried:
    >rebooting
    >reseating the GPU
    >blowing dust out of the GPU
    >emptying my computer for power (pull out powerplug, hold power button for 30 seconds)
    >clearing CMOS
    >different drivers (both with and without clean install option)
    >plugging monitors into 2nd DVI port (no signal from any monitors)
    >tried DVI to DVI, DVI to VGA, and DVI to HDMI - nothing seems to work

    >tried the onboard DVI port for 2nd monitor, works but then I can't "clone" it to my TV.
    It also doesn't seem to get any signal during POST and BOOT (tried both monitors).
    The monitor also appears in "Screen Resolution" but as "Available display output: on Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000," but it doesn't work.
    When I messed around with it, trying to get it work, it also had an option to "force VGA" or something like that - but that did not work either.

    Sounds probable, but if you look at the first link I posted where other's have similar issues (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=142971.msg1066807#msg1066807) he tried swapping his GPU and it did not work for him. It might of course still be that the connection is just bad on my GPU and something else for him.
    I'll wait a while and see if other's can come up with some good suggestions. If not, I guess I have to RMA it.

    I have heard that a Evga GTX 680 PC graphics card could be used in a Mac 5,1 mid 2010 without flashing it ?
    What else would I need, don't want to shell out $$ for a Mac card if I don't have to.

    680 is supported on windows, i dont recall if its in the 11.02 update on mac but if not then you can add to the supported cards txt file.
    not sure why its a 6 minute video as it should take you about a minute to add to yout txt file

  • CC 2014 and GTX 680 Graphics Card for Mac

    I am using a NVIDA GTX 680 card for Mac and with Premiere CC and I can use the Mercury Engine with Cuda. I am running a Mac Pro 12 Core with OS 10.8.5. When I launched CC 2014 it told me to update the Cuda drivers for my card otherwise Premiere could not access the Cuda drivers. Question I have is does anyone know the driver numbers I need to have and do I have to upgrade to Mavericks to take advantage of the drivers. Once these drivers are installed will it interfere with using Cuda in Premiere CC?

    i am planing to upgrade my pc (i7 950 , win 7 64 ultimate, 24gb ram )  and i have CS6 production premium with latestest updates. Right now i have evga gtx 580 3GB classified.... i bought last year as i oonly had pci e 2, so decided there were no point to pay more for gtx 680 ..... but Now i will upgrade everything Cpu, mother board and so on..... so will get pci e 3.0
    Anyway i d like to find out is it worth for me as CS6 owner to upgrade my GPU as well? does CS6 with latest updates supports newer GPUs like gtx 680 or 690 or 780 or that gtx Titan?
    BTW what is that GeForce GTX TITAN? is it much different from 780? it was easier to understand when there was just numbers in the name .....but now Titan - what is it? the price difference is like double....
    i just use Premier for now and still learning , so mostly my consirns are if newer card will work with cs 6 and if i will get some gain? also is it important to get more GB in GPU memory?

    as i understood you guys do some manipulation with the code in order to support latest cards, after that is done - latest cards are fully supported, same as if that would be a natively supported cards? i have not decided yet but i maybe get 780 or titan if its 100% supported
    and if i remember dual gpu cards are not supported with CS6 , as well as sli . or it was changed with latest updates?

    I used to have a crappy old graphic card and recently upgraded to a EVGA GTX 680 4GB (CLASSIFIED model).
    My systems specs are:
    i7 930 @ 2.8Mhz

    Win 7 64 Ultimate

    PP CS6 (6.0.3) installed on SSD drive
    Scratch disk - Source/Export are seperate drives (both 3TB USB 3.0 drives)
    I am currently editing a music video with DSLR 1080p footage. At most, 2 layers of footage, basic transitions and some sharpening/color correction layers. Nothing that my old card was fussy about.
    The MPE (GPU CUDA acceleration) is enabled in Premiere Pro. I do see a difference when building my clips, the timeline stays mostly yellow instead of completely red. My CPU isn't freaking out as it used to with my old card, so I do see a performance increase at that level.  However, if I try to render my timeline or export, it takes so long! To export my 3 minute music video clip, I takes approx. 43 minutes (in 720p).
    I know each video project is unique, but similar projects processed with my old card appeared to be exported/rendered faster than with my new card.
    What am I doing wrong? Any obvious pointers?
    Any help/tips will be appreciated.

    Todd has some stuff he wrote in help files about this stuff... spread out over various areas of forums ( ae, pre pro, etc. ).. and basically what you're getting out of cuda with cool card is very good and fast ( using graph card ram, gpu etc ). So really ...it does make editing faster and smoother etc...
    BUT when you get to the export stage you're using the CPU , not the GPU anymore...although I think you can play around with pre rendering stuff and maybe then use 'rendered' files ...and gain a fraction of time on export.. I'm not experienced much with this at all...so what I'm saying is based on what I've read over the last year or so here in the forums etc.
    What you call " basic" and simple really isn't so basic and simple in terms of what the program(s) is doing.. as the stuff has is really math intensive ( cpu is working it's little heart out )...and you are getting the product..but it's gonna take the time it takes using what it can use....
    sorry, but there's no magic solution to making changes and then switching from gpu to cpu final export etc.
    I just bought a custom made computer I call the " pig " ( it is HUGE )..and working with mov h264 native ( which is great cause before that had to be converted to avi etc ).. in the long run I save ton of time editing native with pig, but exports are slow even with pig...its fact of life , but cs6 and pig is doing well with it so far...

  • GTX 580 3GB or GTX 680 2GB

    Hello all, I have a question.
    I recently built a x79 3930k sys, I bought a EVGA gtx 580 3GB for the PP MPE....EVGA has a step-up program for 90 days I can step up to a better card. I just bought the card march 3, so I still have a few months. However, I entered their que for a step-up to the gtx 680 2GB for the up in Cuda Cores... but for I have learned from some videos is Adobe After Effects will use all the VRAM (3GB for my 580) and get some sorta performance increase??? Can anyone explain to me what I would be missing
    going down to 2GB from 3GB of vram .. I can also cancel my step-up and still reenter for 2 more months.. to see if EVGA offers the 4GB version by then. At that point I would reenter the step up program and upgrade to the gtx 680 4GB....   as it stands I only pay shipping (8.40) for the jump to the 680 2GB, the 4GB version might cost a bit more ($50-100) what the heck should I do... Though I am not using after effects at the moment I anticipate heavy usage.. I am not worried about applying the hack for the 680...

    Difficult question to answer at this moment. It depends on a number of things. What kind of material do you edit? If it includes RED 4K or EPIC 5K, I would definitely wait for the 4 GB version, but if you don't do that regularly or only in small amounts then the 2 GB version may suffice. The GTX 680 has of course the advantage of being PCIe-3.0 which can be put to good use on your 2011 platform and supports three or four monitors, something the 580 can't do. Whether the 680 will be faster than the 580 with 3 GB remains to be seen. The number of CUDA cores has tripled, but the memory bus was reduced from 384 to 256 bits, and it is not yet clear what impact that will have on performance.
    A second thing to consider is your intended AE use, which you say will be heavy in the future. Tthe fact that After Effects can use multiple GPUs for CUDA computation (for the ray-traced 3D renderer) makes using some GPU setups sensible that may have been a waste for Premiere Pro.
    IMO, you currently have the following options, including the announced but not yet available 4 GB versions of the 680:
    1. Stick to the 580, but add a 560 Ti for AE and steering a third monitor.
    2. Step up to the 680 2 GB for steering a third monitor, but with the risk of running out of VRAM with RED or EPIC material and thus the reduction to software mode only.
    3. Step up to the 680 4 GB for steering a third monitor without the risk of software mode fallback.
    4. Take a gamble that the 685/690 with a 384 bit memory bus may be announced in the near future (not likely).

  • PS6 Video using NVIDIA GTX 680 card in 2009 Mac Pro OS 10.9.4- slow.

    Hi,
    I just put a GTX 680 in my juiced up Mac Pro, replacing the original NVDIA 120... and the speeds in PS6 doing video seem to be exactly the same as before..... What are the settings I should have in preferences? Do I need a driver or anything? Looking in the graphics card part of PS6 prefs, it seems to be registering the 680..... and everything works... but I see no difference in any speed.
    Any advice?

    I've done all the preferences I can find online.
    If I turn "use Graphics processor" to "off"... it seems to make no difference to the video speeds- playback, export...
    Have I just wasted $700 on the GTX 680?
    I'm running Photoshop CS6 Extended.... does this mean the videon editing does NOT use the GPU?
    Please offer some insight, advice or information...
