Guide - How to make the most out of your sp

This guide is designed to tell you
.what you should use for the smallest files with almost floorless results
2.some suggestions of how to get your files smaller without sacrificing much audio quality
if you have a flash player, or a hard disk based player and lots of music you want to get the best quality for the least file size. In my opinion a Lame encoded MP3 is probably your best option and if you just want to make your wav files less than a third of the size at a great quality just use 320kb
ps.
LAME will give you the best quality for the same amount of space.
However if you want to have lots of tracks on a small space and still get good quality here are the settings and FREE software you should use.
Razor Lame - An easy interface for the use of Lame (MP3 Encoder), extract the zip files into a folder
- http://www.dors.de/razorlame/index.php
Lame - get the latest lame bundle and add lame.exe to your razor lame folder this will allow razor lame to encode your wav files to MP3 using the latest and greatest version of lame.
before I tell you the settings and explain why I have chosen them, if you want to save time you can just paste this (-b 64 -m j -h -V -B 320 --resample 44.) into the custom options bit, this will set up my options without you having to fiddle about, under the expert tab (without the brackets) then tick only use custom options.
The settings - in the lame options do this.... choose MODE as Joint Stereo (this will use one channel when both channels are the same, then 2 when there different therefore less space) and set up your output directory (this is where all your mp3 will be sent after they have been encoded) this directory must be manually created by you otherwise razor lame will copy the mp3 to the folder of the original file. Ok this is going to sound silly, but choose your current bit rate as 64kbits (don?t worry this will be your minimum bit rate for a VBR file)
Now click the advanced tab, all you need to do here is set the optimisation to "Quality" this will mean the MP3s take longer to encode but the final result will be better quality for the same space.
Next click on the VBR tab, this stands for variable bit rate and allows the bit rate of the mp3 to change throughout the song giving busier parts a greater bit rate (to keep most of the sounds) and less busy part less bit rate as they do not need as much bit rate and it will save space. Click enable VBR and Choose 320kbps as your maximum bit rate.
Your VBR file can now use bit rates between 80kbps and 320kbps, but now you need to tell razor lame whether it should tend to use higher bit rates, or lots of lower bit rates, you do this with the quality option. I would advise you choose as this will give you great quality and a file only about 4% the size of the original.
Now all you have to do is click the audio processing tab and choose the output sampling frequency as 44. kHz
and encode away.
With these options your original wav files will be compressed to 0.4 of there size as wav files but have the quality of a normal 256kbps mp3 which is 0.8 the size of an original wav file. Which means you can now fit 30%-40% more tracks without loss of quality, or you could fit the same amount of mp3s with noticeably higher quality.
These files are as small as they can be whilst almost sounding perfect but here?s what you should consider if you want to reduce quality and size of file.
- Change the quality in the VBR tab, instead of one try 2-5, the bigger the number the more the compression but the worse the quality of the file.
- Lower the max bit rate for the VBR encoding, go into the VBR tab and select a lower bit rate, i wouldn?t advise going below 224kbit.
- Don?t use stereo, Lots of people don?t seem to care, stereo or mono though 2 speakers, if you use mono, instead of the 2 speakers playing slightly different things they will both play the same, this will save space and increase quality (so you could lower the quality setting a bit more).
At the end of the day there are lost of options for you to mess around with and its up to you to find what?s best for you, hopefully these guidelines are useful (however i would defiantly use lame)Message Edited by -Recoba- on -04-987 05:47 PMMessage Edited by -Recoba- on 03-02-2005 07:48 PM

  • Apex 3 + BI Publisher - how to make the most of it?

    Hi there
For evaluation purposes, I have downloaded and installed the standalone version of BI Publisher 10.1.3.3.2 in my machine. I modified the Apex settings to use BIP instead of Apache FOP that I was using before.
All is working fine. When I click the Print link, I get the a PDF file.
But the problem is exactly this: all is working fine... as before! I cannot see any obvious advantage of using BIP instead of FOP. I cannot see any new property that I can set or anything like this.
So, what new features are available to me in this new scenario? How to make the most of BIP and Apex? Is it something that I need to do on the BIP side rather than in Apex side? I need to justify the cost of BIP... ;)
    Any advice will be welcome...
    Cheers,
    Luis

    Hi Luis,
Difficult question to answer in the forums, since it's very much a 'visual wow' factor seeing the BIP integration in action.
However, going into marketting-mode for a moment (please excuse me, I don't do it often!), APEX Evangelists are holding some advanced APEX Training in London in March in which Dimitri Gielis will be doing a masterclass session in APEX/BIP and FOP integration (amongst many other things).
Here's a direct link to the training for more information -
    http://eurotraining.apex-evangelists.com
Like I say, it's a difficult question to answer in the forum, however just sitting and watching someone who knows their way around the products is usually enough to provide a pretty convincing argument to management on why that big BIP fee might be justified!
    Hope this helps,
    John.

  • Need advice on how to get the most out of iDVD.

My wife and I do wedding Photography - Videography as a source of extra income.
My question is: How can I produce the highest image quality dvd for our clients using iDVD.
I dont quite under stand the difference between exporting from iMovie to iDVD and Sharing the
movie from iMovie to the media browser, then opening iDVD and adding the movie that way.
I shoot the movies with my Sony HDR-SR12 Camera and edit the footage with iMovie 09'.
"please explain slowly and clearly" I am good with what I already know, however can quickly get
confused when taking on new methods and or terminology...
    Thanks in advance.

My question is: How can I produce the highest image quality dvd for our clients using iDVD.
    "please explain slowly and clearly"
    If only it WERE simple.....
Your camera shoots HD video in AVCHD format. DVDs use mpg-2 compression and are really 4:3 devices; 16:9 content is anamorphically squeezed to the SD format. DVD players unsqueeze it on playback.
Converting you HD AVCHD video to anamorphically squeezed mpg-2 content offers lots of opportunities for quality loss.
You can try simply 'Sharing' your iMovie '09 movie with iDVD but I expect this will not produce maximum quality.
I probably would choose the Share>Export using QuickTime option and then select the QuickTime Option>Video Setting of Apple Intermediate Codec. This conversion may take quite a while.
For single layer media, if your content is under 60 minutes Best Performance encoding will probably give you the best results; if it's over 60 and under 120 minutes use Professional Quality. Personally, I try to stay away from DL media.
What I suggest you do is create a short (say 15 minute) demo video clip and then try the various output option from iMovie and encoding options in iDVD to see what you like.
When the iApps first came out (about 8 years ago), most prosumer video shooting was done in the DV format (digital video on mini-tape cassettes). DV is an easy format to edit because it is 'lightly' compressed and all the information needed to edit is easily accessible. The newer formats (like your AVCHD) are much more highly compressed and are more complicated to work with.

  • How to make the fade out effect.

    Hi Everyone!
Can someone go through the steps for me in regards to making this effect below.
Where the stripes are faded out down the page.
Would indesign be the best place to make this in?

InDesign is good for doing that. I created three layers (no required, but helps to isolate the elements).
    First, create a colored background.
Second, make a layer for the white bars. I duplicated one, then used Object > Transform Again > Transform Again to make the rest. Then I grouped them.
Apply the Effect called Gradient Feather to the group. Adjust the settings as shown.
    Add a type layer.

  • How to get the most out of my setup...

As most of you know if you've read previous posts, I've recently had trouble with my hard disks, so, after I finish this project I'm ready to 'revamp' my setup, so it's ready for future use and some advice would be really useful...
I have a Mac Pro machine, two years old, Quad-core Intel Xeon, 2.8ghz processor, 8gb memory.
2 internal Hard Disks - 1 Capacity 297.77gb and the other 465.44gb, I've been using the smaller one as bootup disk for apps and os x and the bigger one for capture scratch.
Then I have a USB external hard disk plugged in which is 1TB and backs up all my data with Time Machine.
I also have one more external Hard disk, which is 297.77gb and has more input options (USB, firewire 400 and 800) but I like to keep this space to transport data, however at the moment I'm using it as a temporary startup disk with OS X and Final Cut, to finish my current project.
So, after reading previous posts and knowing I work as a film editor, what do you suggest I do?
My plan is to backup all files from internal disks to external ones, while I perform Disk warrior directory maintenance. I'll try to clear some data and then I'll set it up as it was.
I can't think of a more appropriate way for it all to work?
Ultimately I'd just like to get it back to working to its full potential, so I can do my work with confidence.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Rendering times are pretty much based on processor speed if I have that right. Not much you can do about that other than buy a new computer. Your day to day work in the finder and accessing of files would be faster with your boot drive internal. One thing you can do is ensure your FCP System Settings are on the fastest disk you have. If you put a pair of drives internal and made a RAID volume for them you would improve your write speed when capturing and for any other read/write operations. You would have to be sure you kept that backed up properly because you double the odds of a failure when two drives spread the data between them. There are many RAID options.
You could also bump up the RAM but you'd have to look at your processes to see if you are being limited by RAM. I'm guessing not but it's not impossible. If you are accessing scratch disks due to RAM limitations that would be one thing you could do.
I would never bother connecting an external via USB if there was an esata or firewire option. I use an esata card internally to give me access to estata storage. I also keep an external FW800 drive for a mirror backup of my boot drive. All my data and booting is internal with all my backups external. Each internal has an external and I have additional externals that I keep off site to protect against fire and theft.

  • How to get the most out of a Macbook Pro?

I'm about to attend Full Sail University for a baccalaureate in Game Design. They'll be sending me a brand new macbook pro with a bunch of software, and I'll be using it 8+ hours per day. I want to have this laptop last at least the 4 years I'll be in college, and then some. What are some things that I can do to make sure this thing stays in top condition?
I've already looked around for some cooling pads, as I know that would be one essential. What are others?

If the school does not purchase it, then you should - Apple Care Protection Plan.

  • How do i stop the popup that says "...choose from thousands of add ons" or "...to get the most out of your browser, learn about our latest features". it bugs. thanks

i just downloaded the new browser

Hi Nancy………. thanks for the reply and suggestion. I’ve had a look and I’m afraid that’s not for me. I spent the best part of a year learning probably just 1% of Dreamweaver and building a new site from templates, so to even think about such major changes now is not an option. Thanks anyway. I need something that does not involve changing the code or templates etc. as I’ve finally got it all working just fine and I daren’t touch it. I have too much on my plate now writing the content.
With my current small site I have tried just turning off the router and this works fine for the browsers once you tell them to work off-line. But Dreamweaver persists in trying to load the ads from the internet and gets all huffy when it can’t. Is there not some simple way to tell it to just use the ads it downloaded a minute ago?
What about the local server thing? Would that work? Either as something installed on the actual machine I’m working from, or on one of the others connected to my router? How would that differ in what I’m doing now and would Dreamweaver actually give up looking to the internet for the ads?
    Regards
    Brian.

  • Get the most out of a Mega PC

    Hi. I'm new :D
I recently bought a Mega 651 to make a bit of a media project
[that I don't really need since my internet PC is already next to the TV and stereo]
and now I am looking at how to get the most out of it.
So I'm interesting in knowing what you've done, or know can be done, with this box. Be it software, hardware or modifications. I know there are alot of threads out there, and I've read alot of them, but I wanted to do a new one which focused a bit on possibilities.
I've fitted mine with a celeron 2.4, 1 gig ram, and a 80 or so GB HDD.
The box is as noisy as a 21" industry rack   I have to do something about it.
Some of the blame has to be put on the disk and I'm gonna replace it when I have time for two windows reinstallations
So, here are some conversation starters.
    Motherboard
MS-6760. Does it conform to any size/form standard?
Are there other motherboards that can be fitted into this box?
Would the boards of other Mega PCs fit? Are they available for sales?
    Power Supply Unit
Something is making noise, even when I remove the hard drive.
The PSU in my box is a FSP250-60MS, max 250 W.
However, on a review I saw it to be fitted with an ENHANCE ENP-2920, 200 W.
I understand the PSU is custom made to give power to the HIFI parts. But are there alternatives that will fit? Are there alternatives if I don't need the radio/CD? Or are the dimentions all wrong anyway... (Measured it to roughly something like 7x14x10 cm)
    System fans
The PSU, the CPU and the mainboard have fans. Has anyone had any luck in reducing noise by replacing any of these? What is required (screws, soldering...), are the fan sizes standard? Did you burn down your house?
    Remote Control Unit
I believe the key word here is "Girder". I've briefly encountered this program before - a program to read the signal of a remote, and assign actions. If I remember correctly, it is not freeware? Is it so, that the remote can be used with  Girder? Will Girder read another remote on the same sensor? Are there alternatives to Girder?
    Display
From what I've read, this display is no fun what so ever. Or? Anyone done anything neat with it?
    TV/Video
I have a ATI all in wonder lying around somewhere, TV tuner and video out. Are you people all using the default TV software or are there alternatives worth playing with?
    Radio Software
Anyone using something other than the default MSI software?
    Media Center Software
I've never tried anything like Media Portal and frankly I'm a bit uncertain of what makes it different from a media player. What are you using, and why?
Anything else you'd like to mention?
    Please do!
It's okay if you point me to another thread that already describes something like this, as long as you leave a hint at what you're finding interesting in the other thread. And you only have to answer the questions you want to
    Let the ideas flow.
    .t

here are a few replies to your queries about the Mega 651:
    Motherboard:
this is a custom built board designed for the mega 651. you might find that the boards in other megas MIGHT work, but they are not available for sale
in any case, i think the 865 and 180 would be different anyway as they use a different LCD display and i imagine the connector might be slightly different
    Power Supply Unit:
again this is a custom design for the Mega series, the only way you might quieten it down is by opening it up and replacing the fan for a quiet type
    System fans:
having looked inside my mega 651 a few times, there is only one fan for the CPU, the chipset is passively cooled. the cpu fan noise has never really bothered me as it is temperature controlled - when the cpu is under load it does speed up, when it is not it stops! as far as i can see, the heatsink/fan is also a custom design
    Display:
forget about it - msi won't release any SDKs for this and probably never will
    TV / Video:
you can use any tv card and its software that you are happy with - there is no specific reason to use an MSI card
    media center software:
the intervideo software provided with the mega 180 and 865 also works with the 651 (if you can get hold of it anywhere). however it is a load of rubbish, and if you do need anything like that, then media portal is going to be your best bet
    find out more at http://mediaportal.sourceforge.net
the trick with these mega pcs is not to expect too much from them!! they are a nice idea, but i think they were rushed to the market too soon in order to steal a march on their other SFF rivals - the next generation of mega PC will hopefully address all the issues we've experienced and make them proper HTPCs!!
    good luck!

  • Getting the most out of my dual core cpu

hi all, i have written an app which loops through a for loop within a for loop to send out tasks
    i.e.
    for( int i = 0; i < train.length; i++)
    //load training file
    for( int j = 0; j < test.length; j++ )
    //load testing file
    //train vs test
now that i have purchased aintel dual core e6600, what should i do to make the most out of it, system monitor currently tells me that one cpu is maxed out nad say 10% of the second cpu is in use so basically one cpu is idle, i would much rather be doing two of these tests at once, one by each cpu...i was thinking of making the tarin vs test part a thread and just keep calling start, but i am worried that as once the start has been made, another will be started and so on...and i dont want hundreds waiting to go as i ahve millions of these tests to do and i wont be able to hold it all in memory so i only want two running at a time, can anyone please help by offering some suggestions
    thanks
    Danny =)

i dont think you can control this from java.
Chances are that there is either a java version for that CPU + OS, in which case the JVM knowns what it is running on and how to make the system calls to manage the CPUs it uses. I really have 'doubt' that this is the case.
Most likely the JVM knows nothing about the dual core and the OS takes care of it, and even more likely the OS doesnt know anything about dual core and the hardware takes care of it.
i would think that its done mostly in hardware and a little bit on the OS level. I dont think applications should care about schedueling and let the OS/HW take care of that.

  • How to get the most of PowerBook G3 233Mhz

its been a while since I dint post on Apple discussions, about one year ago, I was thinking I would get a PowerBook G3 Pismo, one year later evry thing was diffrent, I ordered a 233Mhz PowerBook G3 Wallstreet (It was the only choice with the money I had) and now I really want to know how to get the most out of it.
I want to do the following
    -Browse the web
    -Listen to music
    -do keynote presentations
    -word proccesing
    -storage
The powerBook that I am going to get comes with a nice 233Mhz G3 chip, 64MB of RAM a 12 inch screen and running Mac OS 9.2.2 (my favorite).
I have alot of knowledge on old Macintosh, and I know almost anything if some asks me things about acient macintosh, but you know, some times you need a little help from other mac fans and share your thoughts...
So what apps should I get? I do know that if you use the commom low requirements apps, It will run smoothly.

    iBook,
Yes, you can add a USB 1.1 or 2.0 PC card to the PCMCIA/CardBus slot. A few suggestions:
-Combo FireWire/USB CardBus PC cards do not work well with OS 9.x; either the USB or FireWire port does not work. This is a software problem in 9.x since these combos work fine under 10.x. My suggestion would be to buy a separate USB PC card and/or FireWire PC card for your connectivity.
-USB 2.0 PC cards will only run at the slower USB 1.1 speeds under 9.x but this is fine for printers, etc. If you wanted to connect an HD, I would use the FireWire interface.
-FireWire and USB PC cards supply insufficient bus power to power a FireWire or USB HD; any device like a printer or HD will have or should have its own power supply.
-Since FireWire and USB are not native to the Wallstreet, the necessary USB and FireWire extensions have not been installed. Open your Extensions Mananger and see if you have these extensions:
    USB Mass Storage Extension
    USB Support
    USB Mass Storage Support
    USB Software Locator
    USB Device Extension
If the above are not present, I recommend you download this USB extension package from OWC; they assembled various version numbers of the Apple USB extensions to correct a problem OS 9.2.2 has with USB PC cards but they can be used with any version of OS 8.6 > 9.2.2.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech/ftp/usb/usbextensions.sit
A file titled 'usbextensions.sit' will appear on your desktop assuming you have set the browser to download files to your desktop. Double-click the file to decompress it and you will have a folder on the desktop with these extensions:
    USB Support v1.4.1
    USB Software Locator v1.5.6
    USB Device Extension v1.5.6
    USB Mass Storage Support v2.0.4
    USB Mass Storage Extension v2.0.4
Highlight all five extensions, then drag them on top of the closed System Folder icon; they will be automatically installed in the Extensions folder. Before restarting, go to Apple menu > Control Panels > Energy Saver > Advanced Settings and uncheck 'Allow Processor Cycling' for •BOTH• the power adapter and battery. If not unchecked (disabled), the powerbook will freeze with a USB PC card.
Now restart to make the USB extensions active. Insert the USB PC card; you should see a USB PC card icon on the desktop. Connect a USB mouse (there is sufficient power for it) and test the USB PC card.
If no desktop USB PC card icon appears, make sure the PC card is fully inserted. You may have to place a hand on the side of the powerbook opposite the PC card slot so you can push hard. If the card fails to seat, the card slot may be in the locked position. Push an opened paperclip into the small hole next to the slot to unlock, then try the card again.

  • How do you make the most of any "free" services/ca...

I wonder if we can get a consensus of views that could contribute to a sticky on how to get the best value for money from BTBBA (and the other BT services that this is based upon).
I'm constantly confused so please excuse my ignorance:
    Calls:
We have three family members on different mobile numbers, all using the same account. We're on 600 minutes - and this usually does for all of us. I'm on the HTC s620; my wife is on an old vanilla Nokia (don't ask) and my daughter is getting our new HTC Hero ("free") upgrade.
We all try to make calls to other mobiles from our mobiles (to make the best use of the included minutes from the 600 minute monthly allowance).
We also have a BT Broadband Talk account on our land-line, so when at home we tend to make calls to other landlines from our landline in the "free" periods. I assume that BTBBT is cheaper than standard BT Option 1 for land-line calls out of the free period, but I really don't know for sure!
Even in the Broadband Talk free periods we make calls to other mobiles on our own mobiles as we assume that - even if we go over our 600-minute allowance, these inter-mobile calls will still be cheaper from a mobile than via BTBBT. Is that correct?
I often link my s620 to the wi-fi network at home for casual (slow) web browsing, and then find that - on the odd occasion that someone calls us on our Broadband Talk number, my mobile will ring as well! I can live with that!
As a previous BT Fusion user I was used to the idea that I could multiply my free minutes by calling on my mobile through the hub, but that's old hat now. I'm given to understand that the new benefit is that I can make calls via BT Openzone, but I don't know if these cost me or not? And what about BT Fon - if I can find a FON connection and make a call, does that cost, or not?
If we don't use our 600 minutes in any one month I assume that the surplus rolls over. All of them, or is there a roll-over cap? If I roll over 100 minutes after month 1, and then have 150 minutes unused at the end of month 2, how many minutes will be rolled over to month 3?
    Texts:
We have a big family text allowance, although having added some text blocks I'm a bit confused about the total allowance as the bill is so complicated to read. It seems we have 400 free texts included in the 600 minute bundle. To that I've added one or two blocks of texts; there's a bill entry for BT Mobile: 200 texts, and also a bill entry for BT Mobile: 300 Texts as well as an entry for the 400 Free Texts. However I'm only being billed for a BT Mobile: 200 Texts Bundle. Not complaining! Of course this could be because I upgraded part way through a month from 200 to 300 extra - but I'm thoroughly confused!
    Data:
We've been super cautious about data. I switched to my current s620 (unused by my wife who didn't like the form factor) when my s710 started to fall apart. When I tried to activate this phone its software needed to be completely updated (not surprising as it had sat unused in its box for 16 months). A very patient lady from BT remotely connected to my PC to assist in getting the correct software on to the s620. However, she omitted to tell me that the default state would mean that all my emails would be flooding on to the s620 and I'd incur a whopping data bill as we only have the bundled free 10MB of Data. BT Customer Service have since done two credits - spanning two bills - for over £60 + VAT for erroneous data charges resulting from my software upgrade. For that I am very thankful!!
Now that the HTC Hero is about to arrive I've decided to subscribe to the £5 Data charge for an  extra 500MB per month. I s that correct  - total allowance will now be 510MB?
From what I've heard it is not easy to monitor your own account's data use. Is there an App for the Hero? Can I check anywhere from the HTC s620?
What is the best strategy for getting free Data on the Hero? I'm assuming that the following is free - (a) connecting via WiFi on your own BT Home Hub (or someone else's BT Hub with their PIN/permission); (b) connecting via BT FON (c) using one's free monthly allowance on BT Openzone - how much data or time is this, and is it cost-effective to add to this data allowance, compared with overshooting on the BTBBA 500MB allowance?
    Other tips:
As well as providing some responses and/or confirmation for the above, does anyone have some more tips for how to get the best value for money out of BT, with a mix of:
    BT land line
    BT Home Hub 2.0
    BT Broadband Talk account
BT BBA To Go Mobile account
    Voice

Mobile Data via BT BBA To Go (Also, would a mobile dongle be a worthwhile/cost-eeffective back-up if you were about to go over the 500MB limit? Although I agree with everyone else who would like a larger allowance available than 500MB - especially on a 600 minute bundle being shard by two or three users)
    BT Vision
I pay a lot to BT every month and I still don't regard myself as anywhere near expert enough in how to use/combine the services for the best value for our money.
    HELP Please!!!

    Wow!
I'm not going to be of much use regarding answers but I sure am going to watching this post like a hawk for any replies. My package is a slightly diluted version of this and I do find the BBtalk and data limits hard to make the most of as well.
If nothing else this totally highlights how complicated BT have managed to make their packages.
A cynic would assume that they are trying to catch us out at every step and for us to either be overspending or not really getting the moneys worth.

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It is not safe to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In thePartition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

    Hi there,
Download a piece of software called TinkerTool - that might just solve your problem. I have used it myself to change the system fonts on my iMac. It is software and not an app.
    Good wishes,
    John.

  • How do I make the most of contacts for iPhone?

Hi, I've had the iPhone 4 since Dec, 2009. So I know very well how to use it. I've been re-watching the iPhone adds, and I really like how well the contacts are organized on the ads, and I was wondering, how can I make my contacts list look good and organized for each contact? How do you do this? any advice will help, I really want to make the most of my iPhone.

What do you mean good and organized?
If you want to add more information to the contact card, you can tap on the contact card of the person you want to edit, then select the Edit button at the top left corner. This will provide you with all the different options that are available to you to add.
At the very bottom there is one that says "add field", tapping on that gives you a few more options like Job Title, Department, Instant Message, Birthday etc.
This article says iCloud, but it's the same process even if you don't have iCloud:
