Handling exceptions at Sub-Process Level

Can we handle exceptions at Sub-Process level itself? Or do we need to transfer the exceptions to the main process and then only the admin user can handle them?

The same thing applies to subprocesses. A subprocess is just a process that has been invoked by another process and the same exception handling rules apply to it.
You can catch exceptions in any process using:
<li> logic at the activity level using a try/catch block
<li> an activity using an Exception transition
<li> a Group in the process using an Exception transition
<li> the process using an Exception Handler
At a minimum, catch the "Others" exception using the Exception Handler. This ensures uncaught exceptions are not sent to the End activity (the default) and the instances are not lost. This simple best practice will save you days of debugging and several calls to customer support to resolve.

  • Exception Handling of Screenflows inside Processes

    Greetings,
    We are currently encountering a problem where some unhandled Exceptions are not being caught in our BPM application.
    Whenever an exception occurs inside a process, BPM has provided a way of handling those exceptions by using the “Process Exception” activity (this looks like a small lightning bolt). All errors that are not caught but are of the compatible type would fall into this activity and get processed.
    The problem arises when your process has a Global Activity Interactive Screenflow. Whenever this screenflow encounters an error inside its flow, it does not get caught by the “Process Exception” activity even though this process was the one that invoked it.
    We can try to make some exception handling per automatic activity inside the Screenflow itself but this usually results in large try-catch statements and multiple connections to custom defined exception activities. This may not be the optimal solution to this.
    Would anyone be able to shed some light on this or offer some best practices on how to resolve these issues?
    Thank you very much!
    Oracle BPM Suite 10.3.2

    Wish I had a better answer for you. Telling you something that you already know, but if you've defined the Global's property with "Has instance access" then you can catch the exceptions in the process.
    Undoubtedly though, you've got a standalone Global or you would not be asking the question. The exception from a Global that does not have instance access can't get caught in the process because there was never an instance created for it inside the process.

  • What is the best way to handle Exception in Java?

    We are designing an application that will be developed using JSP + EJB .
    To deal with the exception part, we have thought about following solutions
    (1)All methods in EJB will be declare with throws clause, with the respect to the potential exceptions that can be thrown by method.
    We will catch only those exceptions, for which we can take alternative steps or further action when they occurred. All other exceptions will be thrown to the caller.
    (2)All JSP pages will have try/catch that catches exceptions thrown by EJB or by JSP code.
    (3)A common JSP file will be designated to handle Exception by setting isErrorPage property true and all JSP files are pointing to that particular file for exception handling.
    (4)Whenever any exception occurred in application, it will bubbled up and end user will get a common JSP page designed to handle exception.
    I am looking for the suggestions to improve this mechanism.
    Regards,
    Chetan

    The problem with the standard expection handling in a web environment is that all the potentially useful status information goes to the user, who probably won't make head nor tail of it. It also goes to the logs which someone might, or might not get arround to reading.
    What I do is to have a standard method called to deal with unanticipated exceptions and e-mail me a status report. This contains not just the extended stack trace (chasing any level of wrapped exception) but also details of the transaction being processed, including the user if known.
    Set up an e-mail alias with a list of people to receive these reports. Often you can have the problem fixed, and send the user an apologetic e-mail before they even get a complaint in.
    Create JSP tags to do this with any other per-page housekeeping.

  • Ttrigger Event Sub-Process from Java code.

    Hi All,
    Is there any way to trigger Event Sub-Process from Java code.
    My requirement is to trigger an Event SubProcess when a Approver clicks on REJECT button in HUMAN TASK.
    One way of achieving this is by placing a gateway after the human task and by validating the human task outcome and there by triggering a call to Event SubProcess.
    But we dont want to put a gateway after the human task. But instead we would like to trigger the Event SubProcess from the ADF task forms itself. ie, by calling a JavaCode.
    Please give me some pointers on achieving this task.
    Thanks
    Parker.

    Hi  jtahlborn, mohan
    yes the process is created from my java code.
    in my code iam creating a process like below and if it is running for a long i need to kill it from java.
    For that " Runtime.getRuntime().exec("taskkill /F /PID " +  7408); " is working fine.
    7408 is my process id in taskmgr created from java and iam manually passing the PID it to kill it.
    But i need to get the PID from java code.
    Thanks for your suggestions.
    Sample Code:
    public static void main(String args[])
            try {
              Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"cmd.exe","/c","start"});
              Field f = process.getClass().getDeclaredField( "handle");

  • System error in block parforEach: Exception why is process finished?

    Hi everybody,
    we split a message in BPM. Then we loop the multiline-container element.
    For each line-item we call a WebService synchrounous.
    We got a exception branch for system errors.
    Now we got the following problem:
    Our produces abount 3000 line-items.
    While processing e.g. item 1000 we got a system error and the BPM jumped into the execption branch. After processing the exception branch the process FINISHED!
    We assumed that the process would go on processing the remaining items!
    Is there a workaroud, that the process does go on with processing the remaining items?
    Regards Mario

    Hi,
    After handling the exception, the process will be continuing after that block. So you can try to put the block within a loop until all the line items get over.

  • Handling exception logging in a Java task scheduler program?

    I need to design a Task Scheduler Where
    1) User should be able to schedule multiple task at the same time.
    2) There should be proper error handling on failure of any task and should not affect the other running tasks.
    I found the related programme at http://www.roseindia.net/java/example/java/util/CertainAndRepeatTime.shtml
    My concern is about handling of point 2 in program provided at above link. Say I schedule a recurring mail send process in above program which will be run first time on 12 september 2011 at 2 am, and will be repeated after every 2 hours Say a one process fais at 8 am. I want to log it in log file with task name and time details. Now if I look at above programme i.e CertainAndRepeatTime.java. This program will exit once it schedules all the tasks. Where and how should handle the logging?
    Posted at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7377204/handling-exception-logging-in-a-java-task-scheduler-program but folks suggesting Quartz scheduler . My Limitation is that i can't for quartz because my project allows me to use only standard java library. Is there any way we can handle logging in the same programme in case of exception.

    Well, first of all I wouldn't trust any code from roseindia. So you might want to look for more reliable advice.
    As for your logging, you can add it for example to the TimerTask itself. I don't recommend adding logging to that roseindia cr*p though.

    Hi Abhi,
    in do_prepare_output you are getting mixed entity which is combination of bol entity and value node.
    you can get the bol entity from mixed node by calling a method get_model_node similarly to get value node entity get_value mode method is available check the class CL_BSP_WD_MIXED_NODE methos, you will get an idea.

  • How can I handle exception? - to give user more friendly notification

    Hi!
    User gets an error:
    'Error in mru internal routine: ORA-20001: Error in MRU: row= 1, ORA-20001: ORA-20001: Current version of data in database has changed since user initiated update process. current checksum =...'
    How can I handle this exception (when two users want to modify the same set of data at the same time)? I would like to hide the above error message and give user more friendly notification.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

    Thanks Vikas for your answer.
    These workarounds are really creative and I want to use one of them. BUT my problem is to 'catch' the exception/error when two users want to modify the same set of data at the same time.
    Those solutions which we can read about in this link you gave me describe handling exceptions in pl/sql processes. How can I catch the error I am talking about in pl/sql code?
    Code would be like this:
    DECLARE
    two_users EXCEPTION;
    BEGIN
    IF --catch the error
    THEN RAISE two_users;
    END IF;
    EXCEPTION WHEN two_users
    THEN :HIDDEN_ITEM := 'Error Message';
    END;
    What should I put in a place where there is '--catch the error' ??
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

  • Calling BPM Sub Process from another BPM Process - Stuck at Sub Process

    Hi
    JDeveloper 11.1.1.6, BPM 11.1.1.6, WLS 10.3.6
    I am trying to Call a BPM Process from another BPM Process. Both the processes are defined in the same BPM Project.
    Both the Processes have 'None' Start and End activities.
    The 'Parent Process' has a 'Call Activity' which calls the 'Sub Process'.
    The Sub process takes a parameter of payload object as input and returns output (also same payload object)
    I have passed the payload object from parent to sub process in the 'Data Associations'.
    The Start and End activities in the sub process also have the data associations set where I am passing the payload object from parent process to child process.
    When I run the process and see the Enterprise Manager console - Audit Trail / Flow tabs,
    Flow Tab - The progress of the process is showing only till the Calling of the sub process in the Parent Process. It does not show the Sub Process.
    Audit Trail Tab - Shows that the Sub Process is called but has not reached to the End of the Sub process.
    The audit trail does not have links to the sub process activities.
    I cannot see any exceptions as well in the audit trail.
    How can I find out why the process is stuck? Or what is going on in the process?
    Please let me know if my explanation is not clear?
    Thanks for any help
    Regards
    Sameer

    Thanks for replying.
    I have another Sub Process with Start and End events as Message Events and used Send Task and Receive Task (Implementation : Process Call) in the Main process to invoke the sub process asynchronously.
    Then, the Sub Process is shown in the 'Flow Trace' as child of the main process.
    In this particular one, I used 'Call Activity' to call the sub process.
    So the Audit trail is showing the sub process as a child.
    But what I was trying to say is that the audit trail did not have links to the entries in the 'Event' column (in Enterprice manager - instance window). (like Instance entered activity, Instance left activity etc).
    I was intending to use these links to see the payload information and try to debug if there is any problem with the code.
    The actual problem I was trying to say in the post is that, even after the user responds to the activity (User Task - Approval) in the Sub process,
    the audit trail is not proceeding further.
    In the Sub process definition, after the user task, there is End with none implementation.
    Hope it is clear now.
    Thanks and Regards

  • Fault handling policy for a process in the fault-binding.xml

    Can I specify a fault handling policy for a specific process using fault handling framework 10.1.3.3?
    <process faultPolicy="DefaultPolicy"/>
    I cannot specify the name of the process according to the xsd :(
    Can this be achieved?
    I have a two different partner links in different processes having the same name. If I add the partner link to the fault-binding.xml what would be the result?
    Note: I cannot use bpel.xml to specify the fault policies as of now.

    The fault policy bindings file does not allow you to specify a specific fault policy for an individual processes. You can only do this for all BPEL processes (eg: process Level) or at finer grained levels such as partner link levels.
    You might be able to use the partner link level for any services that call the process in which you wnat to error handle (eg: Process C needs to be error handled. Process A and B call C so for the partner link names for invoking C could have the fault policy defined for them). Therefore any faults returned from C could propagate back to process A / B and be handled within by the policy outside of Process C. Obviously if this apporach was used you would not want to use process level definitions as C would continue to use this.
    If the partner links were of the same name, they should both be handled by the fault policy that is defined withiin the Fault policy (e.g Partner Link level definitions)
    An approach that can be used is to specify the fault policy within the bpel.xml file. The information would be added as follows:
    </partnerLinkBindings>
    <!-- Start of Definition-->
    <faultPolicyBindings>
    <process faultPolicy="AProcessFaultPolicy"/>
    <partnerLink faultPolicy="APartnerLinnkPolicy">
    <name>insertSSN_dbAdapter</name>
    <name>Another_Adapter</name>
    </partnerLink>
    </faultPolicyBindings>
    <!-- End of Definition -->
    </BPELProcess>
    </BPELSuitcase>
    However, I noted you said you were unable to do this. I wasn't sure if this was for technical/governamce reasons or knowledge reasons (unsure where to place to the details.
    Hope that helps and does not confuse matters

    Hi,
    This can be done, using the Triggers functionality, and a trigger that detects a certain type of error in a log and calls a web service.
    Someone more experienced than me in writing triggers would probably need to help with an example.

    Mike
