Hard Drive Wiped Out - Can I Save My iTunes?

My hard drive is going to be wiped clean, icnluding all my iTunes files. Can I "reverse sync" from my iPod nano once I reinstall iTunes or will I have to back up externally using a flash card? If I do backup externally, will a simple transfer to a flash card work?
Dell   Windows XP   iPod Nano

If you know you are going to be wiping the drive before hand, then I would say definitely try to make a backup of your iTunes folder now just in case. But to answer your specific question about iPod to computer transfer...

  • Hard drive wiped out - can i restore songs from my ipod back to my computer

My computer hard drive is completly wiped out and my itunes back up with all my music is gone.
Is there a way to take what is on my ipod and transfer back to my new computer?

    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.
    Music from iPod to computer.
There's also another method. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), there's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
The above methods will depend on what version of iTunes you are running.
I can't vouch that any of them will work with iTunes version 7.

  • HT204406 Hard Drive wiped out - Can I rebuild the library with iTunes Match?

My hard drive and external back of my entire music library (15,000+ songs) were completely deleted. I would like to recover this in some way other than loading each single CD one at a time again. I have iTunes Match so I was wondering if there is someway for me to rebuild my library via download from the cloud or something so that I can maintain a new physical copy of the files on my computer again? Or will I have to do this from my iPod?

    Hello Mclary101,
Thanks for your question! Im sorry to hear about your computer but it sounds like you had iTunes Match turned on before this happened. You should be able to use this article to get your music in iTunes Match re downloaded:
iTunes: How to add a computer or iOS device to iTunes Match
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4913
To add a computer to iTunes Match
Open the latest version of iTunes on the computer you intend to add. You can download the latest version of iTunes here.
Sign in with the Apple ID you use with iTunes Match.
Choose Store > Turn On iTunes Match.
Click the Add This Computer button.
When prompted, enter your Apple ID password.
iTunes will automatically begin scanning your computer's library for matches.
A status indicator will allow you to track progress. You may also manually pause and resume the process at any time by clicking the Stop or Start button.
Once iTunes has completed matching and uploading your iTunes library, your music in iCloud will be integrated into your local music library. A download button will appear to the right of any content that you have in iCloud that doesn't already exist on your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • HT1351 I recently had my hard drive wiped out by a virus and had to reinstall windows and itunes. When i hooked up my ipod it didnt automatically sync my songs on my ipod with the library. How do I do this manually?

I recently had my hard drive wiped out by a virus and had to reinstall windows and itunes. When I hooked up my ipod it did not transfer my songs from my ipod to my itunes library. How do I do this?

iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from the computer's iTunes library to the iPod.  You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchsed from the iTunes Store).
However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.  (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Once the song files are on your computer's drive, you can add them to your new iTunes library.  (Going forward, you should use a backup strategy, and include your iTunes data in what gets backed up.  Then, you would be able to recover your complete iTunes library, including things like playlists and ratings.)

  • My mac hard drive crashed. Can I restore my iTunes library from my iPod to my new hard drive?

My mac hard drive crashed, and had to be replaced. Can I restore my iTunes library from my iPod to my new hard drive? About 2500 songs, some from iTunes store, most from other online sources or my own CDs.

To restore non-purchased music on the iTunes Store to iTunes from the iPod, you need a third-party application as Senuti > http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/ You can use others, but this has worked perfectly for me

  • PC hard drive wiped out, how do I transfer to new one?

Our home PC (running Windows XP) had to have it's hard drive replaced, therefore I lost everything I had on itunes (I know, I know, I should have had it all backed up!). I spoke to a great guy on the helpline, who told me how to at least get all my purchased back on once I'd reinstalled itunes, but not all my purchases were put back on, including songs and some movies.
First question: How do I solve this? I obviously don't want to have to purchase the missing items again.
Second question: The very helpful itunes guy on the phone prompted me through the steps to get my purchased music off my ipod, which I vaguely remember how to do, but can someone please remind me?! I have changed itunes on the PC to manually manage, so my ipod doesn't get wiped when I plug it in.
Third question: I now have a laptop (running Windows Vista) and have installed itunes on it, but I would like to use this now as my main 'computer' as it were, instead of the PC. Can anyone tell me how to go about this? I'm frightened of plugging in my ipod and wiping everything off!
If anyone can help I will be eternally grateful!!! Thanks!

Please take a look at this forum this will help your case.http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12115655#12115655

  • Replacing hard drive ... can I save my iWeb and iPhoto folders?

Hi, I'm giving in my MacBook Pro for repair tomorrow. Is it possible to save what I have in my iWeb to transfer over to a new hard drive as well as my iPhoto folders?

Is your Macbook going in for repair because the HD is broken?
Then it is not possible to get back your file's If the HD is damaged and doesn't work, then you can't get your file's back easy. There are some company's who can do this, but those costs a enormous lot off money!
Is the HD is going to be replace for a bigger or faster drive?
Yes, then you can put the HD in a external encosure. This will make it possible to acces the disk with the USB or FireWire port on your Mac.
This is a nice and cheap enclosure:
    http://www.cooldrives.com/usbesal2hadr1.html
You can always try to put a broken HD in such a enclosure. Sometime's you are really lucky and can still get back the file's.
Always have a back-up off your important Data!
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!
Please see the "helpfull" and "solved" button's on top off this message! Apple: Why reward points?

  • Second hard drive added but can't save any files to it

My 250 GB hard drive failed and was replaced under warrantee (thank God I had backed it up a week earlier)
I had the operating system and application loaded on the 250GB drive and everything works fine. I had the dealer add a 500 GB Seagate Ultra 16 for storing all my data. I have a 500 GB external hard drive for back up. I am not able to save any data or create folders in the 500GB internal hard drive. My system profiler shows that its loaded. What do i need to do so taht i can use it for storing my data.

The drive must first be partitioned then formatted:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

  • Hard drive wiped out - service battery ?

I am living in Amman Jordan until the end of the year. My MacBook Pro has been running slow and the battery was draining faster than normal. I noticed it said Service Battery. I took it in to an "authorized Apple store" here and the tech said he would take a look. At the time I had a bad feeling. The next day after no word I called and he was saying something about the hard drive had crashed. ?? I took it in for the battery now he is rambling on about my hard drive. He said upgrading the software would help and he would wipe everything off. I told him no as I didn't know what I had backed up and wanted to make sure I didn't lose everything. Something was lost in translation because when I picked up my Mac tonight he had upgraded my computer to Mavericks and wiped my hard drive clean! *** with no back up!? Now I am sitting here in Amman Jordan with only a partial backup all my applications gone - no pages, no iPhoto - nada! Furious doesn't even begin to describe my feelings. How do I get these apps back. I don't want iPhoto 11 and I definitely don't want to pay for new apps! I just want my old programs back and do what I can to rebuild my Mac from the last Time Machine backup.  Seeking help on how to do this. And of course this didn't help my battery which still says service battery - what is the solution to that. I don't want anyone else in this country touching my computer! Can the service battery issue wait until 2015? When I return to the States

You should be able to re-download any purchased items from the App Store Purchase page: Download past purchases. If you require assistance, then see Mac App Store Customer Service.
Not knowing how much you use the battery it's hard to tell how long it will last, but if it requires service then it hasn't much time left. However, you can continue using it on AC power from the charger. If the battery is user-replaceable, then you may want to order a new battery online and install it yourself.

  • Hard drive wiped out unable to sync to restore. help!

i had a problem with songs skipping or jump to next. i restored it with same problem and was told to wipe the hard drive. lost os unable to sync (syncs but unable to restore)from itune. help please.

The iTunes content sync is one-way: Computer to phone. You can transfer iTunes purchased music & apps: Connect your phone, iTunes running, first make sure your computer is authorized: Store>Authorize this Computer, then: File>Transfer Purchases. For music ripped on your own, you'll have to use third-party software to first extract such from your phone, as Apple makes no provisions to do so. Do this before you do anything else:

  • Hard drive wiped- syncing my ipod with new itunes download?

I recently had to wipe my hard drive because my computer got a virus I wasn't able to clear out any other way. I re-downloaded itunes and tried to sync my Ipod to it. (I wasn't able to back up any files.. not even pictures.. before the system restore) Anyway I was wondering if there is any way to copy the music on my Ipod to my itunes library? I tried to sync it, but it said it would erase the music on my Ipod currently. ***** for me because that is the only place i have my music stored except a few cds in my car. HELP!!! Am I SOL?
newest version of Itunes available, Windows Vista x64, Ipod Nano 5th gen

If you connect your ipod to your computer then look in the hidden folder labeled "iPod_Control" . (This is on a Mac version, but i think it's the same for Windows) and in "Music" is all your music mixed up in different folders. Just drag the MUSIC folder onto itunes then BAM! It's done ;D
Source:... This is what I did when this EXACT thing happened to me ;D

  • Which external hard drive should I use to save my iTunes library?

    Hi,
So I have collected so much music and movies in iTunes that my internal HD is practically full.  (Library is over 500GB of 1TB and the rest is taken up with my apps and programs.)  It's time to purchase an external hard drive to transfer my library to.  Furthermore, I currently have a 2TB WD My Book for Mac that I am currently using for backup.  The My Book is also full and Time Machine is deleting the oldest backups to make room for the current ones.
Here is where I need everyones advice.  I am planning on purchasing a 3TB WD My Book for Mac.  I am planning on purchasing more movies for iTunes.  Which external hard drive should I use for what?  Option A or B
Option A:  Put my iTunes library on the 2TB external hard drive and use the 3TB for backup
Option B:  Put my iTunes library on the 3TB external hard drive and continue to use the 2TB for backup
Also please give me your reasoning.
    Thanks everyone for your responses!

    Limnos,
So, let's go one step further with this.  I read your reply to moving iTunes library to an external hard drive: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4594518?tstart=0  However, if I move the iTunes library, will this include all the movies and apps that I have purchased?
    Thanks!!!!

    Either of these should help.
    http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
    http://www.whatsizemac.com/
Or search 'disk size' in the App Store.
Be carefull with what you delete & have a backup BEFORE you start, you may also want to reboot to try to free any memory that may have been written to disk.
