Hardware problems after connecting external SSD

I bought a Sandisk 120 GB SSD for my new Mac mini (late 2012).
However, when I discovered that it seemed quite bothersome to put it inside the mini (although there is room for it), I bought an external case for it.
It was easy to put the drive inside, and it worked first-time. Of course... :-)
But a few times now, the WLAN speed of the mini got really slooow. And some other thing got me wondering about harware problems. The connection to the drive is a USB 3 cable that came with the case.
I talked to Apple support, and got satisfied with things, except that I got web page information on how to do a Apple Hardware test, that does not mention how to do, if you, as in the mini, do not have a DVD drive (and no DVD with the test software, I think...).
Now, I also tried one other thing - I moved the external drive to the other side of the mini, if it in some way affects the radio connection in the WLAN. We'll see how things work out.
The last thing, how to transfer things from the HD to the SSD, I will come to when I think that the hardware works ok. I'll wait a day or two.
Apple does not recommend running the OS from an external SSD, but for me I think it should work ok. Except that I got worried how to do if I have a drive failure.
I use Time Machine, and if I understand correctly, I can transfer everything from the internal HD containing about 100 GB to the SSD by doing a Time Machine Restore to it.
Any information on this would be interesting!
Thanks,
/groundliner

Why does not Restore work the other way around, to an external SSD? Seems a bit illogical.
The Time Machine backup is not bootable, but I came up with the idea of booting from the Recovery partition, with my Time Machine partition then being available for a Restore.
Thanks for the idea of using Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper, I've seen them mentioned. But the Apple guy I talked to thought (if I understood him correctly), that I could Restore to the external SSD, but that Apple recommends using internal SSDs.
Thanks for mentioning the Recovery Partition problem, but I now just installed a small startup partition on the internal 500 GB hard disk. So, I ought to have a recovery partition there, even if I reformat the Macintosh HD partition presently residing there. I am not familiar with exactly where the boot is tried, since the normal Startup Disk would be the external SSD. But, yes, the small startup partition should suffice, if I can boot from it (how?).
I had so much problems, partly from my own muddy thinking, using Migration Assistant for moving to the Mac mini, that I do not want that again.
I have an external, big Time Machine Backup Volume, that should suffice for backing up all other Volumes.
I have wanted to learn, and not missing simple things that could cause trouble, so I'm thankful for all ideas.
If neccessary I will buy the software to copy all files to the external SSD!
Thanks!

  • Laptop monitor goes black after connection external vga monitor

    Hey,
I have a Qosmio G50-10H, running windows 7 32-bit. After connecting an external monitor the internal laptop screen goes almost black. It's possible to see some elements on screen, but it's to dark grey to work on. It does not respond much to color or brightness adjustment (black to really dark grey). The main trouble is when disconnection the external monitor the internal monitor still is dark grey and still isn't responding much to adjustments. It's so dark on the brigthest adjustments that it is impossible to work on. I have downloaded latest driver for support, but still same problem.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi buddy,
That means the internal monitor is always dark grey even you start the notebook without external monitor?!
Well, in such cases it could be a LCD inverter malfunction. This part controls the backlight of LCD and if its defective, you can see a picture but its very dark/grey.
By the way: Do you notice the same behavior if you are in BIOS setup? So you can check if its Windows related problem or not.
In worst case you need help from an authorized service provider. They can check what the problem is exactly.

  • Presenter 8 crashes after connecting external Firewire cam

    Good day,
We often organize workshops and conferences which I sometimes record with an external camera for later reference by our own staff or to make them available to clients who couldn't attend the presentations.
For a long time I was looking for a tool to synchronise PowerPoint slides with spoken recorded comment (audio/video), since I don't believe in just making slides available to people who couldn't attend the presentation, without the spoken comments of the speaker.
I also believe in slides with as less text as possible, but more with images, schemes and animations to support the speaker's message. But in such a case, the spoken comment is an essential part of the presentation to get the message, since the slides as-such alone don't tell enough.
I installed the trial version of Adobe Presenter 8 to test its suitability for our company marketing and presentation needs.
Adobe Presenter 8 seems to work perfect to synchronise Powerpoint slides and screen actions, together with video recorded by an external webcam, connected via USB to my notebook or via the internal webcam in my notebook.
However, I also want to record presentations, presented in our auditorium and meeting rooms and I want to synchronise in realtime (= during the actual presentation) the Powerpoint slides together with the video/audio from the speaker.  The realtime option avoids the work of recording the speaker on tape or in an MPG or FLV during the actual presentation, uploading the A/V file to my PC and doing the PowerPoint/audio/video synchronisation work afterwards by going through the whole presentation again.
To record the video I therefore use an external semi-pro videocamera (JVC DV-500), since this gives me better possibilities to frame the right image, zoom in/out, better lens, etc ...  in comparison with an ordinary webcam.  The JVC DV-500 can be connected to a computer via a Firewire I/F.
This always worked perfect when we recorded and streamed video/audio using Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2.  Adobe Flash Encoder recognizes the via FireWire connected external cam without a problem.
But, when using Adobe Presenter 8 within PowerPoint 2010 to start recording a presentation, and when I switch on the power switch on the external JVC-cam, Adobe Presenter 8 crashes, showing an error "Application encountered an internal error ... report to product support forums, etc ..." and "Adobe-Pr-VC.exe doesn't work anymore", and creating some error log and dump-files on my notebook.
After switching off the external cam and keeping it switched off, and manually deleting in Task Manager still running instances of Presenter-software (Adobe_Pr_VC.exe), and restarting PowerPoint, everything works well again with the USB or internal webcam.
Already deleted Presenter from my notebook, cleaned up registry with CCleaner, reinstalled Presenter, but error keeps on coming back.
Someone any ideas what causes this error?
Software conflict, driver conflict, Adobe Presenter incompatible with external A/V devices, no support of FireWire I/F, ... ?
    Configuration:
    Fujitsu notebook LifeBook T5010
    Windows 7 Pro SP1  32-bit (Dutch version)
Microsoft Office 2010 Pro Plus (Dutch version)
    Creative webcam connected via USB
External JVC DV-500 videocamera connected via build-in Firewire I/F
Firewire driver was installed by Windows automatically when connecting the cam (msdv.sys 6.1.7600.16385)
The only other real-time encoding software installed is Adobe Flash Media Live encoder 3.2.
Some other usual Adobe stuff (flash player, shockwave player, AIR, reader X, )
The possibility of connecting an external cam to record the speaker and synchronise the PowerPoint and/or screen actions in realtime, would greatly enhance our work.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
started Presenter's Video Creator in troubleshoot mode with external Firewire connected cam switched off.
    1. Video Creator started in troubleshoot mode (got the 'troubleshoot' message)
    2. default active cam was the USB webcam (HD screen, SD cam)
    3. started recording
    4. everything worked normal
    5. stopped recording
Result looked fine. Got the normal troubleshoot message, asking to send log files.  Did not do this, since there was no error at this time.
Then repeated the process with exteral FireWire cam.
    1. Video Creator started in troubleshoot mode
    2. default active cam was the USB webcam (HD screen, SD cam)
    3. powered on external JVC camera connected to the notebook via FireWire
    4. Video Creator crashed after windows detected (beep sound) an active appliance on the FireWire port.
Could not even stop recording with Video Creator in a normal way to go to the "send error log to Adobe" procedure.
Instead got a box with the message: "Applications encountered an internal error. If the problem persists, please report on product support forums or contact the support team."
Had to shut down Adobe_Pr_VC.exe manually in Task Manager.
Tried the same procedure with another FireWire appliance, a DV video recorder with a tape of a previously recorded conference session.
Same error, as soon as I powered on the videorecorder, and Windows detected (beep sound) an active appliance on the FireWire port, Video Creator crashed with the same error message as above.
I can't go through the whole workflow to send the error logs to Adobe, since Video Creator crashes from the moment the power of a FireWire appliance is switched on.
No possibility to stop recording in a normal way (SHIFT-END or clicking the icon in system tray).
Had to manually shut down Adobe_Pr_VC.exe in Task Manager again.
Tried again with Adobe Flash Media Live Encorder 3.2 to see how this application reacts, to be sure there is nothing wrong with my notebook or the Windows O/S.
    1. started Flash Media Encoder with external FireWire cam switched off
    2. saw 2 active devices : build in Sirius webcam and external USB Creative webcam
    3. saw image of my webcam in the encoder monitor windows
    4. switched on power on external JVC camera, connected via FireWire
    5. Flash Media Encoder immediatelly recognized "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR". Selected this and image of external cam was shown in the encoder monitor windows.
    6. Could stream FireWire cam image to an external streaming service without a problem.
Conclusion:  a FireWire connected cam does work with other Adobe software. Must be something wrong in the Video Creator software.
Sorry I can't send you the log files, since app in both normal and troubleshoot mode crashes prematurely.
Hope my explanation helps you a bit to find a solution.

  • Problems after connecting USB 1.1 devices to an unpowered USB hub

After connecting a mouse, usb stick and an external hardrive to an unpowered USB 2.0 hub, I now get no response from any of those devices, though they had been working fine before. Other devices that I have since plugged into that same usb slot work just fine. What could possibly have happened??? I appreciate any insight!

    Nance,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
You did not mention if each one of these devices still works when plugged directly into the USB 1.1 port. If they do, then I cannot explain the problem. If they do not, it is possible the USB 1.1 port was overloaded with all three devices connected to the unpowered USB 2.0 hub. You may have gotten such a warning on the screen.
If you have not done so, I would disconnect all devices, shut down the powerbook, then reset the PRAM.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Now test each device by connecting directly to the USB 1.1 port.
If both the USB stick and USB HD (I am assuming that you have an unpowered 2.5" HD) were mounted on the computer's desktop when this 'possible' power shortfall occurred, it could have corrupted both devices so they will not longer mount properly. Connect each device to the USB 1.1 port, then see if Disk Utility can see the device and repair any damage. The mouse may no longer work if the preferences or other software was corrupted.
If you are running an unpowered HD, I would recommend a powered USB 2.0 hub so you can connect other devices without worry.

  • Mackbook internal keyboard fails to work after connecting external keyboard

I am using 13 inch alum macbook. The keyboard and trackpad has always been good.
Today, I tried to connect it to an external wireless logitech keyboard. Initially things do not work. Macbook does not recognize the external keyboard, and ask me to press the key on the right hand side of the left shift key. I tried to press a couple of times, and realized that the wireless keyboard has been running out of battery (has not been using that for a while). After I changed the new batteries, things are connected. However, I am not sure what key I pressed to answer macbook's question. Anyway, most keys work as expected (the 26 letters), but windows key on the external keyboard works as the apple command key. Then I downloaded the doublecommand software trying to remap keys.
Suddenly, I found that the external keyboard fails to work. I then try the internal keyboard, which fails as well. I then disconnect the external keyboard/mouse/display, and restart the machine. The trackpad works ok, but the internal keyboard still fails to work and thus I can not login (can not enter my password). Restarted a couple of times and the situation remains.
I tend to believe this is a software problem related to the mess up of the external keyboard. I tried to boot the machine using the original installation DVD and repaired the permissions of the hardisk. This did not fix the problem.
    Please help. Thanks.

    Problem solved.
It was the "doublecommand" software that I installed after connecting the external keyboard.
I called the Apple Technical Support. They helped me to boot into the safe mode (press Shift when turn on your computer until you see the login screen), and uninstall the software. Things are back to normal.
Apple technical support is very professional and knowledgeable. Thanks.

I attached a LaCie external drive to back up photos and iTunes on iMac running Mountain Lion OS. I'm trying to resize partitions to back up but after attaching I'm having problems restarting and/or shutting down. I keep getting gray screen And have to shut down to start up. • HDD problem after installing new SSD

i bought a Kingstone SSD 60GB, and procced to a clean installation in my HP DV7-1020us laptop wich i love. All nice and good... i got out the HDD, install SSD in previously used HDD slot, install windows 7 on SSD partition, put the HDD in second hard drive bay that was it.
The problem is... after couples shuts down of my laptop (still working good), one time when i started, my laptop spent like 10-15 mins trying to start up the windows , ( i could hear my old HDD working hard) and after that i wanted to reach my HDD but i couldnt... i double click on the partition i want to open and my HDD starts working hard hard and in the end it says that i need to format it so i can acces it.  My hdd haves 3 partitions... i runned disk checks and repairs and still doing the same. I finally formated all of it... all of my HDD partitions including the Recovery partition. My HDD works fine until i shut down my laptop for the first time after formating, then another 10-15 mins to start up and shut down the windows. Also if i connect my hdd via USB everything is fine ( if i previously format the HDD and connect it via USB).  But if i move it back into my laptop in my sata slot things goes bad again. Also if i wait 10 mins at start up, get the hdd out and connect it via usb it still runs very ver very slow, and one partition asks me for formating. So i'm thinking that my second sata slot connection does something bad to my hdd.
I'm thinking that my second sata slot haves some problems... what should i do? I dont like my HDD working on my USB, it's a laptop, everything has to be integrated.
Oh and if i move my ssd from first sata slot to my second one, it says  "please insert bootable device...."
Thank you, if u need more information please ask me

    Hi mykey651,
Thank you for your query, I will do my utmost to assist you.
I grasp you have installed a SSD drive as the main drive and the original drive as a secondary. All works well until you reboot and then it is unable to locate the SSD.
Here is a link to HP Notebook Hard Drives & Solid State Drives Identifying, Preventing, Diagnosing and Recovering from...
If that has not helped, I suggest you go out to the bios and restore the defaults.  This will reset the system and make it scan for  installed hardware.  This should help it to find the new SSD as the boot drive.
Here are two more documents that may be of help.

  • HD problem after connecting to new Mac Pro

Went to our first MUG meeting of the years tonight. And took along my Lacie 500gig firewire external H/D. This was going to be used to demo the new iTunes 7 app. The computer being used was a new Mac Pro duo core intel etc.
When I plugged the H/d in to the Firewire 400 socket on this machine it would not mount. So sadly the demo would have to wait for another meeting.
MORE SADLY.... when I returned home and tried to connect it to my 15" iMac it would not mount..... What has happened??
It is more than obvious to me that my hard-drive has been corrupted by trying to use it with Apples latest entry into the market.
I have swapped cords Ports etc. The drive does power up when I start the computer and sounds like it is going to mount... Profiler does not show it...
    any help would be appreciated...

Seems that I have a solution.... It would seem after some troubleshooting that the FireWire 400 port in no longer working.... why? I can only guess. The other FireWire 800 and USB 2 ports are fine.... Thankfully I am still in the warrantee window....
Let me say that this is the first and only problem I have had with Lacie H/D's....other than ...."Make sure that you initialize it before adding any files to it"... I know it is supposed to be Plug & Play with Mac, But I am betting it will think it is connected to a PC....unless you take the initializing step...

    Hi mate
Sorry but you message I really hard to understand
What I understand is that you connected an external keyboard to the Qosmio and now the notebook does not boot up correctly. Is it right?
What to say; maybe you should disable the USB legacy mode in BIOS.
    Please check this!
To get into the BIOS press F2 and while powering up the notebook.

  • TG797n v3 dropping connection after connecting External HDD

Hi All, I have a Seagate SRD00F2 external HDD that I'd like to network on the TG797n v3. Problem is, as soon as I connect it the whole modem starts to drop out and reboot itself. The HDD has an external power supply, but not a switch to power it up. After reading some other posts I'm concerned that this hard drive still needs USB power as well which is causing the modem to crash/reboot. Would a powered USB hub be sufficient to connect the two devices, or do I need to change my external hard drive? Product suggestions would be appreciated.

hey , Thats' a 2 TB harddrive, right? Which of the ports on the TG797 do you have it connected to - the back, or the side? I'm a tad confused, because the Seagate has it's own power supply, and you should not need a powered hub as well. I know some people have had issues, because IIRC, this is a USB3 drive. So some steps I suggest - run a test on the Seagate drive by connecting it to a PC and run the Seagate diagnostics (download them from Seagate), just to eliminate the drive as havig an issueTry a different port on the ModemTry a different USB drive as well, as I doubt the modem will like the separate hub, for instance As an aside,  after the modem reboots, does it "see" the Seagate drive, or does the TGN797 continue to misbehave?

  • Problems with connecting external Hd and iPod

Hi all, I really hope someone here can help and this problem is driving me up the wall!!
Before i installed Mavericks i could simply plug in my 2tb WD My Passport external hd into my usb and use it how you normally would but since going over to Mavericks i get this message appear...
The only way i can use the drive is to keep it plugged into my Macbook and restart it and then i can use it as normal.
I've contacted Wd (who are pretty useless) and have followed the steps they've suggested such as backing up the drive and re-enstalling Mavericks. I've also re-enstalled the driver software from the Wd page but still i get this. I can plug the HD into my partners Mac and it works straight away.
And now recently I have the same problem when i connect my ipod classic into my Macbook. The ipod shows in finder but not in itunes. I've also took that back to factory settings and then re-enstalled it but again, I have to restart the computer to get it to show in itunes.
I've gone into disk utily and followed the repair disk procedure and that only goes so far then does nothing!
I'm no expert with all the tecnical stuff so please bear that in mind if you have an answer for me, thanks

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    { ls -@ORen /S*/*/E*/IOSto*; codesign -vv $_ 2>&1; } | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Problem after upgrading to SSD

    Hello,
I just bought a new Samsung 850 evo 120 gb to boost my 5yrs old notebook's performance (HP dv6-1360ev).
Tried to install windows 8.1 pro failed a few times as the notebook shut down unexpectedly. I assumed that that was an overheating problem, as the fan was working like crazy.  After i managed to install the OS (please dont laugh: did it outside of the house because it was freezing cold), i run PC Wizard and find out that the CPU diode is at 98 Celcius before it shuts down.
I put back my old HDD with windows 7 Home Edition and the system runs smooth and cool. Any ideas? Maybe the 3D V-NAND is not compatible with my CPU?
System: Intel Core Duo [email protected], 4GB RAM DDR3, Ati HD 4650 1GB RAM
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi @thodorix ,
If you restore the defaults this should have the hardware update. Once this is done, here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system at the time of purchase. if you do an update with the BIOS this should help.
Are you still working with Windows 7?

  • Problem in connecting external URLs from Java ME Platform SDK 3.0

    Hello all,
I am building a mobile application using Java ME Platform SDK 3.0. My application needs to connect to external web services. I have finished development of first module and it is running perfectly from actual mobile device. But the problem is:
While developing the application I am used to test it with given mobile Emulators in Java ME Platform SDK 3.0. During this test I am not able to connect to external web service if I am testing if within local intranet using proxy server. To solve this I have configured Proxy Setting in the IDE at:
Tools Menu -> Options -> General -> Manual Proxy Settings and given HTTP Proxy Server and it's Port. The same proxy settings are there in all web browsers in my machine.
But It is giving error like:
    Unknown error 10054 during socket::read
Strange thing is that the same application is running perfectly If my PC is not in Intranet and connected to internet directly.
Please help me that how can I set proxy settings in Java ME Platform SDK 3.0 to get in working?
Any suggestions regarding this will be helpful for me.
Thanks to spare some time and read my post,
    Tejas.

    Hi Tejas,
it should work. I tested it right now and my proxy was used without any problems. The way how you set proxy settings is correct.
Could you try following to verify that it is a proxy problem or not, please?
    1. run demo application "Demos" (from Start Page or File->Open Sample Project)
    2. choose "HttpView" midlet and start it
    3. choose "cnn"
    4. if proxy is set correctly, you will see page source; otherwise you will get an error message
If the demo runs fine, the problem is probably somewhere else in the communication.
There is one limitation in proxy settings. Only proxy without username and password is supported. Isn't it your case?
    Regards,
    Radko
