You've checked the purchase history on your account (Store > View My Account on your computer's iTunes) ?     thanks. yes i am aware of the VoiceOver feature but it is NOT the solution to my problem. as you said, it is a solution to a different set of issues. i want the text to speech ability because i there are books i need to read but do not have the time to sit down and read them and have become used to listening to them read to me either by a professional human reader or with the text to speech software on the Kindle.
    I think Apple makes the best audio devices but i am really disappointed in this inexplainable shortcoming. if apple can give us siri they ought to be able to design a nice little button that i can push to turn on text to speech while i am in a document, book, magazine or webpage. clearly it is possible as apple has added the "reader" button in safari to have web pages dropped into the reader format.
    thanks for your suggestion though, it is what everyone suggests but it does not address the issue.

    Select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History on your computer.
    Currently, if your purchase happens to be your most recent purchase you will not be redirected to the report form, in this case use the report a problem option from the invoice that was emailed to you.

    Try this:
    Open your iBooks app on your iPad
    Select the Store Button at the top
    Select Purchased at the bottom
    You will see your AppleID on the right at the bottom, then Redeem, then Support
    Click on your Apple ID, and when the AppleID window comes up with the options, Sign Out
    Then Sign In again and try redownloading your book

    This happend to me too. 10:30 am on March 4 an app was purchased, using my store credit and charging the remaining amount to my bank. I don't even have a smart phone that has apps. I have sent a request to Customer Service. Itunes has a security problem.

    The app may have been free to download, but did you then make any in-app purchases within it to unlock extra features ?     You can turn off in-app purchases on your device via Settings > General > Restrictions > In-App Purchases 'off'

Am persevering thru it, will get there eventually, as I had already tried to press the Report a Problem link on the invoice, but it won' t connect to iTunes store on my iPad, it keeps saying can't connect.
