Having to Choose a Document TWICE to Open in Acrobat

Lately every time I try to open a PDF in Acrobat I have had to go through the steps to open TWICE before it actually launches in the program. This happens whether I double click the PDF icon, drag the icon to Acrobat in my Dock or open from the File menu. I then have to doubleclick, drag, etc. one more time before the file will open.
I'm using Acrobat 9 Pro 9.1.2 on OSX 10.5.7
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

How many copies of Acrobat and/or Reader do you have on your machine? Where is the Acrobat application located? Does this happen withn any other application? You can try to delete your caches with an application like Onyx or Applejack.

    1. At the conclusion of the (failed) code is the file test.pdf indeed open in Acrobat?
    2. Is this an Acroform (not one made in Designer)?
    3. Is Protected Mode on?
    4. Is there any situation where this has worked (e.g. different document or release of Acrobat), or is this your first try?

  • Make a pdf document default to open in Acrobat on other computers

    Ok - so I know one must make their own computer default to use Acrobat to open pdf's... but I know most macs default to 'Mac Preview' and you have to manually change this. A lot of 'non computer type' people just don't bother. So I wondered if there is anyway to make the pdf itself open in Acrobat on other people's machines, despite what their defualt setting is?
    I've used links etc in my pdf to make it interactive, and they don't work well in Preview, so I want to make sure people are viewing it correctly. Any ideas? Thanks!

    It's not that simple as you have to take account of three things:
    Many third-party solutions have no forms support
    Some have bits of JS but not all - you may for example be in a mobile version of Reader, or in Acrobat with enterprise feature lockdown.
    Some third-party apps that do have rudimentary JS engines declare the same software ident strings as Acrobat or Reader, specifically to avoid triggering a detection script.
    Rather than using forms, the most efficient method is to use a layer (OCG) that is visible by default, and is subsequently hidden by a doc-level script. Most third-party apps, even those with no forms support, will still happily render OCG content. It'll even display if someone imports the PDF into an editing program.
    Getting code to reliably detect that it's running in the Acrobat Family is difficult but not impossible - but you don't trust the ident string until you know you're in Adobe code, instead you sniff for API objects inside try-catch loops, which the third-party apps cannot implement. Some of the security handler options are nice and Adobe-specific.

  • Online documents can't open after acrobat trial version

    I've had a trial-version of adobe acrobat but I don't have it anymore. Now all of a sudden, I can't open online document links in any browser because there is a note that says that I have to agree with som license agreement. How can I go back to opening my online documents with adobe reader??

    It still doesn't work. I just tried to delete adobe reader and reinstall it but this message still pops up when I want to open a link to a document. It is in danish but what it says is: "Before you continue, you have to start adobe acrobat and accept the end user agreement". But I don't have Adobe Acrobat on my computer!! And I don't want it...

  • How to check if document is still open

    I have the following problem with Adobe Acrobat Standard 9:
    I have a Java Applet that uses Adobe Acrobat to present documents to the user. The user is able to edit and save the document. When the user closes the document the document is stored in a database and therefore I somehow have to listen for when the document is closed to determine when to save the docuent in the database.
    The "listener" is implemented in a thread that executes every 500 ms. I use a product called Java2COM (NevaObject Technology) to communicate with the Adobe Object-model in Windows. The code to determine if the document is still open has this implementation:
    private boolean isValid() {
         synchronized (READ) {
              if (mDoc == 0) { //mDoc is the document registered in the COMIGlobalInterfaceTable
                   return false;
         boolean valid = false;
         COMIDispatch document = new COMIDispatch();
         COMDispParams params = null;
         COMVariant ans = null;
         try {
              COMIGlobalInterfaceTable.GetInterface(mDoc, document);
              params = new COMDispParams();
              ans = new COMVariant();
              COMExcepInfo exc = new COMExcepInfo();
              document.Invoke("IsValid",
                   COMIDispatch.LOCALE_SYSTEM_DEFAULT,
                   COMIDispatch.DISPATCH_METHOD,
                   params, ans, exc);
              valid = ans.asBoolean();
              } catch (COMException e) {
                   valid = !COM.isComAppAvslutad(e.hresult().getValue());
              } finally {
                   clear(params);
                   clear(ans);
                   release(document);
              return valid;
    A big part of the problem is that I have not managed to reproduce the problem in test mode... the problem occurs (so far) only in production mode.
    Most part of the code above is Java2COM-specific so my main question is this: Is using the method 'IsValid' in Acrobat's COM/OLE-api the correct way to check if a document is open/showed in Adobe Acrobat?

    Yes, but my problem is that I don't know at what point the user closes the document. For example:
    The user creates a new document (pdf) in my Java Applet.
    The Java Applet launches Acrobat Standard which presents a document to the user.
    The user edits the document, saves and then closes the document.
    The document is now to be stored in a document database... and therefore I have to somehow "listen" for when the document has been closed, I can't store it in the database before it has been properly closed.
    So what I do (or try to do) is ask Acrobat Standard if the document is still open in Acrobat Standard by calling its method IsValid in the COM-api. This is done in a thread that executes every 500 ms.
    There may be better ways to achieve this so any suggestion is appreciated.

  • Press Quality PDFs created in CS4 show as "damaged" when attempting to open in Acrobat 5

    I've been having problems creating PDFs that can be opened in Acrobat 5. While using InDesign CS4, I'm trying to print to the Adobe PDF driver using the Press Quality setting, which as it states "can be opened with Acrobat and Adobe Reader 5.0 and later." However, when someone tries to open the resulting PDFs in Acrobat 5, they get a message saying "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." They open just fine in Acrobat 9.
    I have been able to export to a PDF and get it to open successfully in Acrobat 5, but unfortunately this is not an option with one file I'm working on (I need to print color separations as a PDF and then pull it into PitStop Pro to make adjustments). Does anybody have any ideas as to why Acrobat 5 isn't able to read these PDFs?
    Running Windows Vista Business with SP1 on a Lenovo with an Intel Core2 Duo processor and 3GB of RAM.
    Thanks.

    If you print to the Adobe PDF printer you are creating a PS file that is then automatically loaded into Distiller for conversion to PDF. Printing to a different PS file should not make a difference, unless the PS driver is substantially different. You can also print to file with the Aodbe PDF printer and then convert with Distiller (eliminating the automatic Distiller step). If you are printing to a network location, that may be the issue. Acrobat has long had problems with some network connections. To check this out, you might print locally and then move the file to the network drive.
    In terms of posting a file, you have to put it on a separate server and then post the link.

  • Mavericks Pages 5 documents won't open

    I upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago. I have documents that were created in Pages ’09 that will no longer open. (Some will, and I don’t know what the difference is) When I try to open one, it either opens, no problem, or I get the message “The required index.xml file is missing”. This message is in a rectangle with an icon representative of Pages ’09 (the inkwell). Since it has this icon, I’m assuming that I was trying to open it in the ’09 version, which is what I intended to do. Since this didn’t work, I tried to “open with Pages.app (4.0.5)” and got the same message. I’m a little afraid to try to open it in Pages 5, since I’ve heard rumors that this could ruin the document. I’m at a loss, and, like everybody else, I have important documents that I need access to. After I upgraded I had both Pages ’09 and Pages 5 on my dock, instead of one of them being in the applications folder. I have looked briefly at pages 5 and determined that I prefer ’09. They are both still in my dock but I never open Pages 5. I’m using an iMac with 10.9.4. All my documents are in Pages ’09 and I want to open them in Pages ’09. What to do?

    Having two versions of Pages on your Mac is a royal pain. The correct version of Pages '09 for Mavericks is v4.3. Apple has a downloadable update here. I am current with both, including Pages v5.2.2. Your opening errors may be due to that Pages v4.0.5 running on Mavericks and needing a newer v4.3. Run Disk Utility from /Applications/Utilities after updating Pages ’09 per above, and verify/repair your permissions.
    I have dragged and dropped Pages '09 from /Applications/iWork '09, and Pages v5.2.2 from /Applications onto my Dock, so the icons are adjacent. You should drag and drop each of your Pages Dock icons out on to your Desktop about two inches and release them to remove them from the Dock. Don't worry, these are aliases to the real applications. Now drag/drop each of the Pages applications back onto the Dock as I have done. You will now know exactly where these icons point back to the individual application locations.
    In System Preferences > Security & Privacy (click the gold lock), under Allow apps downloaded from: mine is set to Mac App Store and identified developers. I am wondering if you have FileVault enabled for your boot drive? I have never seen your dialog as posted, so try my settings.
    With both applications installed on your Mac, you can only open Pages ’09 documents as follows, and double-click will always open them in Pages v5+.
    Launch Pages ’09, and open the document via the application File chooser
    Right-click on the ’09 document, and from the Open With sub-menu, select Pages (v4.n)
    Drag and drop the ’09 document onto the Pages ’09 Dock icon.
    Pages v5.2+ will open a Pages ’09 document without asking if you want too. As Pages v5.2+ is about 110 features/functionality less than Pages ’09 v4.3, it will also silently filter content from your ’09 documents as it opens them. This has been a catastrophe for those without backups.
    For forward organizational purposes, I would recommend that you create a custom tag name and color in Finder Preferences for explicit identification of your Pages ’09 documents. You can change this color and tag name in the open document title when you roll over the file name. Then you have both a visual clue to avoid opening these in Pages v5+, and the tag name allows you to use an Finder Window, or Spotlight search on that name to exclusive find Pages ’09 documents. Here is an example of a Finder tag: Pages search:

  • Not able to copying files/folders from one Document Library to another Document Library using Open with Browser functionality

    Hi All,
    We have SharePoint Production server 2013 where users are complaining that they are not able to copy or move files from one document library to another document library using “Open with Explorer” functionality.
    We tried to activate publishing features on production server but it did not work. We users reported following errors:
    Copying files from one document library to another document library:
    Tried to map the document libraries and still not get the error to copy files:
    In our UAT environment we are able to copy and move folders from using “Open with Explorer” though.
    We have tried to simulate in the UAT environment but could not reproduce the production environment.
    Any pointers about this issue would be highly appertained.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi John and all,
    One the newly created web applications that we created few days back and navigated to document library, clicked on “Open with Explorer”, we get this error.
    We're having a problem opening this location in file explorer. Add this website to your trusted and try again.
    We added to the trusted site in Internet Explorer for this web application, cleared the cache and open the site with same document library but still get the same above error.
    However, another existing web application (In same the Farm) that we are troubleshooting at the moment, we are able click on “Open with Explorer”,  login in credentials opens and we entered the details we are able to open the document
    library and tried to follow these steps:
    From Windows Explorer (using with Open with Explorer), tried to copy or move a files to
    source document library.
    From Windows Explorer moved this file to another destination document library and we got this error.
    What we have to achieve is users should be able to copy files and folders using
    Open with Explorer functionality. We don’t know why Open with Explorer
    functionality not work working for our environment.
    Are we doing something wrong?
    We have referred to following websites.
    we hope concepts of copying / Moving files are similar as SharePoint 2010. Our production environment is SharePoint 2013.

  • Is there some way of getting adobe to work without having to download a document first, then adobe will show the pages.

    Hello,
    I am trying to find out what I can do, to get adobe to open up a pdf file so that I can read all pages, without having to download the document first. I get the first page only; then I download and have access to all pages. Then I delete. Seems like such a long process. Is there another way? Do I need to download a different adobe?
    Thanks for your help.

    How are you seeing your document on iCloud from your laptop? Web browser, or OS X Pages open dialog?
    If you have MS Word or .pages formatted files parked on iCloud, the web interface will not permit their download as PDF, and in fact, PDF is an inactive option in that download menu for these word processing files. There is no copy facility available, but duplicate functionality exists from the iWork category within the iCloud web presence.
    If you have Pages v4.2 or later installed on your (assumption: Mac) laptop, launch Pages and in the open file dialog, select iCloud on the dialog toolbar. Now, press and hold the option key as you drag and drop a copy of our document from iCloud to your desktop. The reverse works also.
    See if you can open that document on your laptop now.

  • FBL5N - cleared document display by 'Open at key date'

    We are on ECC 6.0 and have recently upgraded from SP9 to SP15 in Financials. The users are saying that the report S_ALR_87012198 (which works the same way as FBL5N transaction) is now displaying the cleared documents differently.
    For example, we have the following documents:
    - invoice (RV) with posting date 11/01/09 and clearing date 11/20/09;
    - payment (DZ) with posting date = clearing date = 11/20/09.
    When the users run the transaction or report for Cleared Documents by using Clearing Date 11/20/09, both documents are displayed. However, when the users run the transaction for Cleared Documents by using 'Open at Key Date' 11/20/09 then only invoice (RV) is displayed.
    The documentation suggests that 'open at key date' should include items that are open before or on the 'key date'. Also our users are saying that it used to display both documents with 'Open at Key Date' before the service pack upgrade, but, unfortunately, we're unable to verify this.
    Could someone with lower version please verify how 'open at key date' option works for cleared documents? And is there any documentation that explains this?
    Thank you.

    > as the standard sap doesnt display the cleared and open items on "Open at key date"
    Thanks for your reply. Just to clarify - there are two 'Open at key date' fields in FBL5N. First field pertains to the 'Open documents' radio-button and second field - to the Cleared documents radio-button. When the users choose 'Cleared documents' and fill in the second 'Open at key date' field, they expect to see the items that are currently closed, but that were open on the specified key date. And SAP does, indeed, display them, just in a rather strange manner (it seems that DZ document is never "open", according to the screen's logic).
    It seems that we'll need to write to SAP for clarification, but I was hoping that someone could at least verify whether this, in fact, has anything to do with the support packs.

  • How can I get pdf documents to automatically open in Adobe rather than Nitro Pro?

    Hi,
    When I bought my PC it had Nitro Pro installed (a paid for PDF programme, that you get for free for 3 months). The free trial has now ended. However, any pdf document I try to open will automatically try to open in Nitro Pro.
    To solve it, I save it to my PC, then ask it to open in Adobe reader. That works, but seems a lot of work. Surely it must be possible to somehow let the pdf doc know that it should open in Acrobat.
    Any suggestions?

    Highlight the PDF, right click and choose "Open with", click on "Choose default program", select Adobe REader then select "Always use the selected program to open this type of file".

  • Document cannot be opened from iCloud

    I seem to be having an issue with documents saved in iCloud.
    Thing is its not every document & it seems to be random.
    I use Pages for all of my invoicing & quotes & i always save them in iCloud so i have access on my iPad & iPhone as well as my Mac
    I have today finished a quote & an invoice both from the Pages app on my Macbook Pro which i saved into iCloud as i always do
    This was a couple of hours ago i have just tried to open the invoice on my iPad & i get a message "Document Can't be opened" i also get this mesage on my iPhone too
    On my Mac in the pages app i now get "********* invoice" could'nt be opened
    I have now also tried to open this from iCloud.com also but i now get this
    Thing is i have the latest version of Pages installed on all my devices.
    I have printed a copy of this when i wrote the invoice but i now need to add something to it & e mail it to the customer.
    The only way to do this now is to rewrite the whole invoice as i cannot open it at all on any device, I have noticed that i can quick veiw them from the iCloud folder from within the app but the documents that now wont open i cannot ive also just tried to use the open recent from the file menu the document now has added -tef to the end of the title this cold be relevant.
    As you can imagine i really could do with finding a way to get back recover or just be able to open the documents this has affected.
    Any help here guys would be greatly appreciated
    Thank you

    My girlfriend's sister is having the same problem. We managed to get the pages file onto a PC to have a look and it's a folder called "name.pages-tef"
    Inside the folder are the following:
    If I open the index.db file with a text editor, I can see the text but it's surrounded by gobbledygook code.
    Any help would be much appreciated as it's 3 months worth of notes apparently. If you try and share it as Pages file, PDF or Word from the Pages app on iPad where it is or from iCloud, it fails. Literally just need to be able to print this so she can get her notes back.

    But I think you are actually trying to open the scans from the Open dialog. Open is for Pages or other WP documents, not for images.
    You import the scans by either dragging them into Pages or by going Menu > Insert > Choose…

  • "Choose a Language" Instead of Opening a Scanned .pdf

    Reader 10 cannot 'read' .pdf attached to email. I get a dropdown box asking me to choose a language. This has happened with three different attachments (scans of documenhts) on two emails from different sources. I uninstalled 10, rebooted and then reinstalled 10. Any clues or suggestions?

    What is your operating system?
    What is your email client?
    Has it ever worked correctly before?  If so, what changed?
    After you choose the language, does it open correctly?
    Does this not happen when the PDF is not a scanned, but a text-based document?
