HDCP ***** Apple!

Be careful when you download HD content from Apple, you might not be able to watch it! Apparently my Apple Cinema Display is not up to it because it is not HDCP compliant, therefore even though it is capable of displaying HD content from everywhere else, it won't from the iTunes store.
Also, I downloaded the preview for "The Event" and it downloaded both the HD and SD versions, however all I get is one entry for the movie and I get the HDCP error with no option the play the SD version that is hidden somewhere in iTunes. All I could do was drag the SD version out of iTunes, delete "The Event" in iTunes and then drag the SD version back in.
Seriously Apple? This ***** plain and simple, and was a terrible decision. I'm not buying a new glossy (crappy) Cinema Display just to watch your HD movies. I prefer my matte display, so you've now lost me as a customer for a new monitor and for HD downloads. Brilliant!

I had the same problem with my older DLP HD TV and managed to fix the problem with a HDMI Switcher that I had lying around. So I'm guessing there are two ways to get around this.
1) Run it through a HDCP compliant receiver.
2) Run it through a HDCP compliant HDMI switcher
Both of these may be very hit and miss.
I was bummed to at first but this solved it.

  • Apple TV HDCP error - very strange

    hello,
So my Apple TV is a couple years old now and I have never had any issues with it - it has been working with 3 different TVs of mine over the last couple years - I have just tried to use it in a different TV and I keep getting the HDCP error every time I try to play anything on it.
My friend uses his Apple TV perfectly fine on this TV and I have tried with his HDMI cable etc. and I still have the same error which makes me think it is an issue with the box itself.
It is still working just fine on my other TV it's just the new one it won't work on - I have tried all the usual diagnostics even resetting everything to factory settings.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Hi leistmacman,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the Apple TV is giving an HDCP error. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

I am having this same issue. Im not sure if this is the cause but I think this is keeping PowerDVD Ultra 11 from playing back Bluray under Windows 7 / Bootcamp

  • My experience with Apple TV and HDMI/HDCP issues

I am convinced that it is the software update to 4.2.2 from 4.2.1 that is causing this issue.  All forms of applications only worked once for me and then it reverted back to HDCP issues.  I read several postings everywhere including plenty at Apple's forum and AVS where people were very frustrated with this HDCP issues.  Anyways, here is what I did before taking it back to Apple store....I bought AUVIO high speed cables from Radio Shack which is rated very high and tried that and I still got HDCP issues when using NetFlix or AirPlay from iPad.  Youtube from Apple TV always worked well without HDCP complaints.
I packed everything back and took it to Apple Store (you can return without re-stocking fee up to 14 days from the day of purchase).  After 14 days, you cannot even return it and you can ONLY fix it.  I waited for a Technician.  They heard my complaints but didn't refute any of it (possibly because they have had numerous complaints on this product).  It took 5 minutes inside for them to test and see similar issues with the box that I had.  So, they have swapped it for a new box.  Before I left the store, I checked the settings including software version and Audio/Video settings in the Apple TV that is connected at the store.  I found three main differences none of which the Apple customer service staff agreed could be the reason for my problems (surprise!!)
    1.  The software update from the shelf and the one they were using was NOT updated to 4.2.2 (it was still running 4.2.1)
    2.  Because of the software update, the Audio/Video setting for HDMI had the options to toggle between Auto, RGBy, RGBhi & RGBlo bandwidth.  I believe this was in place to make the HDMI interface output as component with higher or lower bandwidth but the newer update will ONLY give you the Auto option (!!!)
    3.  They had this directly Ethernet wired and not through Wireless network and were recieving the all the full bar strength signals.  On the box that I returned, eventhough I have 18 Mbps speed at the house (any given time of the day), the Network speed test was taking a long time.  Moreover, after the Apple TV network test, it doesn't spit out the outcome of the tests (a BIG bummer and useless for testing).
Anyways, I took the new box and hooked it up directly to my SONY BRAVIA XBR3 TV to one of the HDMI ports, disabled the feature to send or recieve data to Apple directly and did NOT update the software.  It worked fine and have tested all of the options.  From what I have read so far (I have only spent 30 hours of my weekend on this when Apple product hookups are supposed to take 5 minutes ONLY), there is NO guarantee that it will work continuously as people have had things work on them for 6 months and then suddenly have the HDCP issues.
Will wait to see....if it continues to work....

I figured it out. Had to go to general settings on the main screen and restart. Synch of audio is much better.

  • HT202157 Why does my apple TV say it needs hdcp compatibility.  It never said that before.  Now my apple tv is not working.

Why does my apple TV say it needs hdcp compatibility.  It never said that before.  Now my apple tv is not working.

    Hello Rickpoulette,
The following article provides further information and could very well help get your Apple TV and your television cooperating again.
If HDCP authentication does not succeed, you may see one of the following symptoms:
A message may appear on your television stating "This content requires HDCP for playback. HDCP isn't supported by your HDMI connection."
You may see periodic bands of static, or full screen static, flashing across your TV screen.
If you are experiencing either of the symptoms above, try playing the same content again for at least another 10 seconds. If the issue persists, try the following steps until the issue is resolved:
Connect your Apple TV (2nd generation) directly to your HDTV using an HDMI cable.
Set your Apple TV and HDTV to off or sleep mode
From the Apple TV interface, select: Settings -> Sleep Now.
Turn off your TV and wait for about 10 seconds.
    Turn your TV back on.
Press the Select button on your Apple TV remote to wake your Apple TV.
Some HDTVs may need a firmware update. Consult your TV manufacturer's user manual or online support pages for additional information about how to update your TV's firmware.
If available, try using a different HDMI to HDMI cable, such as an Apple HDMI to HDMI cable, directly between your Apple TV (2nd generation) and 720p HDCP-compatible HDTV.

  • Is it possible to input itunes into DVI/HDCP input from imac with Apple mini display portS?

Is it possible to input itunes into DVI/HDCP input from imac with Apple mini display port? Or is there another way?

The problem with itunes is needing a computer running it. or continuous internet connection.
A Time Capsule is AC mains powered.. no battery. Although you can certainly buy an older Gen4 TC and modify it ...
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
I have run my TC on a 12V SLA battery.. which would neatly meet that part of the functionality you want. But it is heavy and not really the rugged sort of device I think you want.
But I would look at other media players and other ways of storing movies than iTunes.. if you want to carry the whole lot around with you .. A bunch of SD cards even you could plug into the ipad??
    External storage for iPad?
A small cheap PC/Mac laptop with a 1TB hard disk  in it.. and 11" or 13" screen.. can often be a much better solution than lugging around multiple items so you can fit Apple devices into your life.

  • HT4428 My Apple TV will no longer display HDCP content.

Help, my Apple TV now complains (and will not display) about "This content requires HDCP for playback..."
The problem is it used to work, recently, now it will not. I have even tried playing shows that I have seen before.  It does play YOUTUBE, but nothing else.  I have not changed a single device in my system, so should be the same as a few days ago.  A bad update?
Has anyone else recently experienced this problem?

I have exactly the same issue, I can see the content that I have purchased and when I start a show or film I get error message after a few seconds. Apparantly it is only for the movies and shows, since I can see and hear my music, clues anyone?

  • HT1551 When use AirPlay to watch hbo go from my iPad on through my tv using Apple TV suddenly it stops and I get an error message that it needs to be played back using hdcp something or other.  Then I can't get it to come back on. Any ideas what is going

When I use airplay to watch hbo go through Apple TV it starts running. However for no apparent reason it will suddenly stop and the error message that I need hdcp something comes on and then I cannot continue watching it. It is so random happening after 40 min of viewing or 15 min or sometimes not letting it start at all. Support topics are no help. Any ideas?

  • HT204291 All of a sudden, my Apple TV requires HDCP for playback. It is directly connected to my HDTV and I never had any problems so far. Apple TV  also refuses to play movies rented from iTunes. What's going on?

Why does Apple TV suddenly requite HDCP for playback?
No mirroring possible, it even refuses to play films rented from iTunes.
Apple TV linked directly to HDTV via hdmi cable?

    Hi Seraphiel07.
I have a very similar issue. Hardware involved:
Apple MacMini (Mid 2011) - OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple TV (3rd Generation). Home Sharing (access) enabled.
Apple MacBook Pro (15" Mid-2009). OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple iPad 2 (Wifi only). iOS 6
    Apple iPhone 4S. iOS 6
    All connected through:
Apple Time Capsule 8.0211n (4th Gen)
I have an iTunes library on the MacBook Pro, shared over "Home Sharing" and another (duplicate content, different library name) iTunes library on my MacMini, which is also accessed through the Apple TV.
All software is current (as of Sep 26th).
All movies are iTunes purchases. 80 in total.
All files are purchased (and home shared) under one account.
My last two iTunes purchases both HD movies on 09/17/2012 and 09/05/2012 refuse to appear on any device accessing either of the two Libraries over Home Sharing. It should be noted that every other movie (the other 78) all show up and play correctly. I therefore know it is not an issue with connectivity, otherwise I would see zero movies available.
    I have:
    1. Removed all content from each Library and re-added
    2. Upgraded the OS on the MacMini 10.8.2
    3. Tested viewing the two missing movies on other Apple devices and no luck.
    4. Turn home sharing on and off within iTunes and also on each device.
It would appear to me that the issue is with the files themselves, rather than the devices as different devices and different versions have been tested.
    All comments welcome.

  • If I am using my Apple TV without hdmi cords do I always lose hdcp playback? If not, which adapters or cords must I purchase so my Apple TV still works optimally?

If I am using my Apple TV without hdmi cords do I always lose hdcp playback? If not, which adapters or cords must I purchase so my Apple TV still works opitmallly?

Ok thank you so much, for your timely response.
    RESPONSES:
    1)   When I set up my iMac, I did not transfer any data directly from my windows PC.  I simply used the same iTunes login and account.  I have access to all of the files via the "Purchased" section of the iTunes store.  If I click "Download Previous Purchases"  text, I can download ALL of the purchases I have ever made.
    2)   I have the Apple TV 2, so good news, question answered.  I thought maybe it was the Apple TV 1, but it is the Black model, so bam.  Good response for you.  Well the whole damned reply is an awesome response, just pointing out that one piece of awesome.  I stated that it was an Apple TV 2, and yet you were still good enough to figure I could be mistaken, and provide me with knowleedge just incase.
    QUESTIONS:
    3)   So can my iMac not stream the data directly from itunes, without download?  Apple TV can, but perhaps that is something among many things that maker it unique, and awesome.
    SERIOUSLY.... THANK YOU...
I work in the computer support section for the Military.  The only problem is we use Windows , lol.  Well that and i've been gone for nearly 6 months on recover.  I go back next month though I hope.  But working in that field gives me the abilty to judge responses that run inside the same vein.  Your response was so awesome that I half thought I might have written it myself.

  • Apple tv not letting me play movies saying HDCP playback not supported

Apple tv, go into netflix try to play movies, wont let me say's HDCP playback not supported. Called netflix tryed various things, they believe it's the apple device itself, tryed to contact apple of course you have to buy $35 pkg for support , so now I don't want to pay that I would rather just go buy another apple tv which would cost my $100 but would I still have the same issue?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
The first thing to check is that your TV is HDCP compliant. If you are sure that it is:
Check that the HDMI cable is correctly seated at both ends.
Try disconnecting the cable and connecting it again.
    Try another HDMI cable.
Try the Apple TV with another TV

  • Apple TV and HDCP Compliance

What do I have to do to make my Apple TV HDCP compliant so that I can watch TV?

Ok but how do I get my Apple TV to work.  My software is updated. But I keep getting a notice to unhook and re hook up my HDMI cable. This is not working.  Is my Apple hardware non compatible?

  • Apple TV Software 2.4 and "HDCP Off"

My Apple TV worked fine until I upgraded the software to 2.4. Now, no HD material will play, citing an HDCP problem. I checked the settings, and under Settings>General>About, I can see that the TV
Connection is set at HDM (HDCP off). And there's no way I can see to turn it on.
Any ideas? Or do we just wait for a software upgrade?
    Thanks.

I've actually gotten a bit extreme. I've unplugged all cables, including power cables, and have left the equipment off for the night. The next morning, I've plugged everything back, and still no HD on the Apple TV.
My baseline is the satellite dish -- all the cables I'm using work with the satellite (in HD), and both the of the HDMI slots on the television work with the satellite dish (in HD).
And the Apple TV works fine for SD material purchased from the Apple Store -- but not HD material purchased from the Apple Store. And my ATV settings show HDCP to be off.
I also checked my manual for the television, and there is no way to turn HDCP on (or off).
