Hdd upgrade with multiple partitions

I currently have a 250gb hdd with lion and a bootcamp partition of windows 7.
I would like to upgrade my hdd because I am running out of room.
I understand that I could most likely back up the entire drive to an external, then install the new hdd and reinstall the backed up data. That should put both partitions the way they were onto the new hdd. At least that is what I think.
But I would like to have a bigger partition for windows and I am unsure how I would do this correctly. I don't know if reinstalling the backed up data to the new drive, deleting the bootcamp partition, then creating a new partition and reinstalling my same windows would work. Would I even be able to install windows a second time on the same computer without having to buy another key?
Final thoughts:
     1. Will backing up the entire drive to an external, then install the new hdd and reinstall the backed up data put both partitions the way they were onto the          new hdd?
          a. Will the OSX partition get all the new space?
     2. How do I get a bigger windows partition on the new hdd, while keeping all of my existing windows content?

Use Windows software to backup your Windows system. When you setup your new Windows partition on the new hard drive reinstall Windows then restore your backup from the backup drive you use for Windows. You don't need another key as long as you don't have the same key active on more than one computer.
Similarly, for OS X backup your current system to an OS X backup drive. See the following:

Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive. Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure. You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume. Click on the Restart button. You should boot from the new drive. Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

Installing Lion clean on hard drive with multiple partitions

I have a spring 2008 24" iMac running Snow Leopard.
I am about to put a new 2TB hard drive in it and after I do that I want to do a clean install of Lion on it.
I do not want to upgrade my Snow Leopard install to Lion. I will keep it on my back up drive as a fallback incase of serious workflow incompatiblities with the new OS.
For my workflow I create and use multiple partitions (Mac OS, Windows and multiple HFS+ for data) on my hard drive and I have seen that Lion creates it's own hidden recovery partition as well for the recovery functionality.
My questions are:
1) Will I have issues running Lion on a partition on a hard drive with multiple partitions that have different file systems?
2) If I install Lion into one of these partitions will it create it's recovery partition within the space of the partition it is being installed into?
3) I will be creating a clean install by downloading Lion using the App Store and then burning an installer DVD using instructions I found elsewhere and then using that to do the install on the new drive. Is that the best route to take?
All my current data I will have on a backup external hard drive and after I complete the Lion install on the new larger drive I will manually reinstall all my software and move my data back from my backup drive to the new drive one partition at a time except of course for OS partition. I keep all my real user data outside of that partition anyway.

You will most likely run into the error message that "Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk" if you have multiple partitions set up, especially if they were not set up using Bootcamp and/or have serveral different file systems.
You can confirm that the Recovery Partition will not be installed by checking Disk Utility for your current partition map scheme.
This is most definitely not the end of the world as it is quite easy to create an external Recovery disk.
1) No, you shouldn't have issues running Lion, but Recovery HD will not be created.
2) No, and in your case it doesn't sound like it will be installed on your internal drive at all.
3) Yes. If you begin with an empty partition, then install Lion that would be considered a clean install.

Concerning your question:
You didn't tell us what you want to do with your table or your set of tables.
As tables are not only storage units but usually bear semantics - read: if data is stored in one table it means something else than the same data in a different table - partitioned tables cannot simply be substituted by multiple tables.
Looked at it on a storage technology level, table partitions are practically the same as tables. Each partition has got its own delta store & can be loaded and displaced to/from memory independent from the others.
Generally speaking there shouldn't be too many performance differences between a partitioned table and multiple tables.
However, when dealing with partitioned tables, the additional step of determining the partition to work on is always required. If computing the result of the partitioning function takes a major share in your total runtime (which is unlikely) then partitioned tables could have a negative performance impact.
Having said this: as with all performance related questions, to get a conclusive answer you need to measure the times required for both alternatives.

Backup to AirDisk with Multiple Partitions Using Time Machine?

Hello All,
I've seen some discussion on the net that suggests it is possible to have one USB drive with multiple partitions connected to an Airport Extreme so that Time Machine can be used to back up several machines to different partitions of that drive. I've got the drive partitioned and attached to the AE. I can see the partitions through Finder but Time Machine does not see anything. Can anyone clarify for me what I need to do in order for TM to see those partitions?

Thanks so much for the reference! Merely reformatting the partitions as indicated in the link did the trick. I did not need to use the command line call to get the drives to appear. A key first step after partitioning seems to be opening a Finder window, clicking on the Airport Express shared volume and then clicking on each partition you want to be able to access. This seems to register each partition. Only then are the partitions available to Time Machine.

Time Machine doesn't like external drives with multiple partitions

I've had a problem with Time Machine on both 10.5.0 & 10.5.1 - Time Machine could not create the initial backup regardless of all the things I tried.
I have a Powerbook with a 300Gb Maxtor connected via firewire 800. This drive had been partitioned into three partitions (which I've used with other backup tools without problem).
Apparently the problem I had been having with Time Machine was that there were three separate partitions on the external drive. As soon as I took a chance and wiped all of those partitions and made a single partition, everything was fine.
I had called Apple Tech Support shortly after I got Leopard and when I discovered the problem with Time Machine. I specifically asked if there would be a problem from the multiple partitions and they didn't think there would be, but they were sure. Looks like Apple was wrong.
If you are having problems with Time Machine with a drive that has multiple partitions, trying changing your external into a single partition drive.

You will note that I was referring to a Powerbook and the Apple Partition Scheme. There might be something different happening for Intel/GUID users.
10.5.1 did address other issues with other partition types. Time Machine seems to have trouble with certain partition schemes. I'm not surprised that multiple partitions and GUID works because of things like bootcamp. Apple probably tested specifically for that type of config. They may not have worked all the bugs out of multiple partitions on a Apple Partition Scheme.

Mid09 MBP: SSD/HDD upgrade, running bootcamp, partitions advice needed

Hi, I recently just put in a Vertex 2 128GB SSD into the optical bay, and still have my original 500GB 5400RPM drive.
Currently I have the 500gb split in half, for OSX and BOOTCAMP, and I am planning to reformat everything and install Lion.
Would it be a good idea to split the SSD into two partitions, and buy a new 1TB HDD 5400RPM and split that in half as well? (Is the 1TB 5400rpm drive the fastest HDD I can get right now? Which brand?)
I plan to do some light gaming on the bootcamp side, and produce music/use Logic Pro on OSX.
How else could I split the partitions for maximum optimization? OSX/Bootcamp are equally important. Thank you for your time.

The SSD should go into the former HD spot and the HD go into the optical or you'll have problems.

Target Mode with multiple partitions??? Also file sharing

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my older G4 using a firewire cable. My G4 has 2 hard drives, and one is divided in to 2 partitions. When I restart my G4 in target mode only the drive that is my start-up disk shows up.
Is there any way around this?
I've thought about just connecting my computers through file sharing but it only lets me share files in my public drive. Is there a way to share all of my files?

Lets say the Username on Machine#1 is jk1, Username on Machine #2 is jk2, and is an admin on #2...
Then from Machine#1 use Go>Network, type in the name of Machine #2, (use the actual IP if the name can't find it), it should come up with the Dialog box with jk1 filled in for the name and asking for the password... but you have to change the name to jk2, (the one with permissions on Machine #2 to see everything), then type in the password of jk2.
The only thing I can see why this wouldn't work for you is if Machine #1 can't find #2, or Permissions need Fixing on #2.

(OS X Lion) cant install windows on HD with multiple partitions

I have installed os x 10.7 lion the day it rolled out from the app store and everything was good. But now, I decided to re-install windows 7 on my macbook on lion. I currently have 2 partitions: 1 for media files and the main partition for the os files. But I cant use boot camp because it keeps on notifying me that i can only have one partition so I could install windows through boot camp. Is that the thing with lion, when I was able to do the same with snow leopard?
Now, I figured that I could not really do anything about and decided to install windows on a single partition and everything went well, though I am still sick that I had to copy everything on one parition.
My next question is: how come that after everytime I get to install windows, the partition does not recognize it anymore after I try to divide the mac partition on disk utility? Here's the scenario, I am able to install windows properly, so I boot to the lion parition and divide it into 2 through disk utility (making the total number of partitions to 3), so I could have one partition I could access both on windows and lion, but after that, when I try to boot windows, the system does not recognize the boot camped anymore. Do I have to stick with just 2 partitions(1 for lion and 1 for windows)? Or there is something wrong with my windows installation?
I am certain that I do not erase the windows partition as I can still the files on that partition through the finder.
I am in need of serious help here. Please.

Use Fusion, or Parallels. They are better for running Winblows, and you don't have to reboot in to it, you simply run Win 7 as an app. I have tried Boot Camp, a few times since it first came available, and it has always been cumbersome, and problematic, to use, and allows typical Winblows issues to happen. Running Win 7 virtual seems to not have those same issues.
Until I retire, soon, I still have to use Windows, along with Macs, Linux, and UNIX, but after that, it all goes, except for the Macs - no more headaches.
Give Fusion, or Parallels a try, they are cheap, and work really well.

Upgrading with multiple lines

My phone (primary line) is available for an upgrade in October, but my wife's (secondary line) isn't until April. We're both grandfathered with the unlimited data plans. If I upgrade mine in October, the family plan will convert to the tiered data plan. What does this do for my wife's phone? Will she continue to have unlimited data until she upgrades, or will she be forced into the tiered system? Is there a way that she can early upgrade as well, without having to pay full price?

As long as you go into the tiered data when you upgrade in October your wife will be able to keep her unlimited until she upgrades. If you want to upgrade your wife's phone in October as well you could pay the ETF which would probably be about $100ish with how long you have been on contract. You also may be able to get the upgrade in October if you've been with Verizon long enough but that is no guarantee.

3.1 upgrade with multiple databases

We have 3 Oracle databases (10g) with APEX on a server. Two databases run with APEX 3.0 & one still runs with APEX 2.
I want to upgrade to APEX 3.1. I ran the apexins script against the APEX 2 database, but now I'm faced with the step of copying the new 3.1 images over the old image file. My questions is what will happen to my existing 3.0 APEX installations if I copy the new image files?

By “on the same server” you probably mean the same HTTP server. This is a supported configuration. A single OHS can support more than one APEX instance, and they don’t have to be the same version. A single database can’t support more than one version of APEX.

New ‘images’ directory, for a newer version, usually add features – icons, themes, templates etc. – to the directory, and don’t delete old stuff. Even the built-in JavaScript library maintains backward compatibility. That means that early version of APEX, like 2.x, can find anything it needs in an ‘images’ directory from 3.x version.

I’m not sure what you mean by compatible, but the 3.1 version of ‘images’ is quite different – content and structure wise - from the 3.1 version. Still, application that was built using 3.0 should run with the 3.1 ‘images’ version. The reverse direction is, of course, not possible.

Time Machine Restore with Multiple Partitions

The Hard Drive failed on my iMac and it was replaced. I am trying to restore from the Time Machine Backup BUT...
I had my old hard drive partitioned into System and Data. The User directories were on the Data partition.
Booting from the DVD I was able to restore the System Partition but there are no home directories for the Users. I cannot log in.
Somehow I need to recreate the User home directories so that I can log in and finish restoring the data.
Worse Case I know that I could do a fresh install of the OS and then get at the data from the backup - but of course I would prefer to restore the entire system.
I do not want to have partitions on the new hard drive - that was a bad idea (partitioning is a bad habit I developed by using windoze!).
My setup is:
- iMac (System being restored)
- Time Capsule
- MacBook

you can restore them using time machine while logged in as root as i said.

it's an option but it's better to use Time machine as it should preserve the permissions.
I can see them with PathFinder but of course the regular Finder does not access them.
you should copy the whole user directories. they are visible in finder.
- Or - I suppose when I log in as Root I should be able to access the Time Machine directly and restore them to the proper location?

Db_hotbackup with multiple partition DB

We are using the C++ version of BDB, and our DB is getting large, so we want to break the DB file into multiple files using the set_partitions function when the DB is opened. We also use the db_hotbackup to backup our DB periodically while the DB is in use. However, what I noticed was that db_hotbackup ONLY copies the <dbname>.db file, but not the _dbp.<dbname>.db.nnn files (which contains the real data).
Here is the command I used: db_hotbackup -cv -h <env dir> -b <backup dir>

Upgrading with multiple serials on account

Right now I have two serials on my account, CS4 Production Premium and CS5 Design Standard. If I upgrade to Creative Cloud, which serial would the upgrade be applied to? My company is wanting me to upgrade my copy of CS4 to Creative Cloud and give CS5 to another employee but I'm not seeing a way to remove that serial from my account... I just don't want to upgrade the wrong product.

So the OP can get the Cloud without tying it to an existing CS serial number (per his original Q).
The mere fact of owning a previous version serial qualifies him for Intro Pricing for the Cloud. No other effect on previous version licenses or serials.
In essence, they'll have six activations available (2 x CS4, 2 x CS5 and 2 x CS6 Cloud).

Encrypting an external disk with two partitions

I have a large external disk that I'm going to be using for Carbon Copy Cloner backups. I want the disk to have two partitions, and I want the whole thing to be encrypted with Full Disk Encryption. Should I (a) first partition the disk and then encrypt each partition, or (b) encrypt the physical disk and then partition the result? I think (a) is the best path (it looks like it's at least possible), but advice would be appreciated -- thanks!

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
I have tried these:
1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
Thoughts and suggestions?

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system not booting in your Lenovo G560 laptop.
As you have mentioned that the system not booting, please try to remove the RAM and turn on the system and check if you can hear any beep sound. Also try to clean the RAM slots and check for the issue.
