  • Questions re: Licensing & Feature Availability of the DSC module

    Hello,
I transferred a project to another development PC. When I opened it, some of my network shared variables (NSV's) were flagged with Feature Errors: "Initial Value: Not licensed or cannot be edited outside of LabVIEW." I found out that it's because I didn't install the DSC Module on the newer machine; removing the "initial value" feature made the error message disappear.
That error itself wasn't a big deal, but it got me thinking and investigating. http://www.ni.com/white-paper/4679/en says:
If you want to use the features of the LabVIEW DSC Module, you must host the shared variables on Windows. The LabVIEW DSC Module adds the following functionality to network-published shared variables:
    · Historical logging to NI Citadel database.
    · Networked alarms and alarm logging.
    · Scaling.
    · User-based security.
    · Initial value.
    · The ability to create custom I/O servers.
    · Integration of the LabVIEW event structure with the shared variable.
    · LabVIEW VIs to programmatically control all aspects of shared variables and the shared variable engine.
    Question 1
I did not realize that the Initial Value feature was part of the DSC Module. If I use it in a project, does that mean that my customer would need to buy a DSC runtime license? (I'm not using any other DSC feature)
    Question 2
In my project, the NSV's in question were hosted on a cRIO target, yet my prototype (which had Initial Value enabled) ran happily without issues. This contradicts the documentation above which says "you must host the shared variables on Windows". Is this expected?
    Question 3
I created a new NSV on my new machine (which doesn't have DSC installed). I saw the "Scaling" option. Is Scaling part of the DSC module or not?
    Question 4
Initial Value and Scaling are generic features, unrelated to data logging/supervisory control. Why are they in the DSC Module? Should they not be in the base SV Engine?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
    1. Yes, any build that uses DSC features require a runtime license.
    2. That's a recommendation for more reliable operations.
    3. No, it is a native LabVIEW capability. The DSC modules simply adds more features regarding communication to protocols, alarming, etc
    4. Initial value, Yes. Scaling, no. I believe is for easy access. Old school method is the one shown in here at the section "Initialize Your Shared Variables".

  • LabVIEW DSC 2011 / OPC Client IO Server / Can I write to the OPC Server using OPC Groups?

    Hi
I am using LabVIEW DSC module as a OPC client. My Shared Variables are binded to automation system OPC Server via "OPC Client IO Server".
On the OPC Server side it seems that the every write commands comes like one item at time, not like grouped.
Now I have tested this with the NI OPC Server as server and KepServer and LabVIEW DSC IO Server as OPC Clients.
When I use the NI OPC Server : OPC Diagnostics there are different events messages when the update request comes from KepServer or LabVIEW DSC.
There are log files on attachements for both write events.

Data from the LabVIEW DSC OPC Client.txt ‏18 KB

    Hello Pentsi,
I have received confirmation (from the PSE in the US) that DSC doesn't support group writes
There however work-arounds that might provide a solution:
    - The first solution I had in mind was like this. Update the 50 OPC items as fast as possible.
Then use a 51st item as synchronization OPC item to check/indicate if new data has arrived/has been set/is available.
So LabVIEW sets 50 OPC values as fast as possible. The 51st value becomes goes from false to true when the first 50 values are written.
When this (51st) value is true on the OPC server you can read out the first 50 values (from the non-LabVIEW side). When you've read out these values, then you can set the 51st value back to false (from the non-LabVIEW side).
In the meanwhile at the LabVIEW side you wait until the 51st value goes back from true to false.
When it becomes false, then you write again those 50 values and afterwards set the 51st synchronization value from false to true.
    And this keeps on going...
Note: Keep in mind that you only have to monitor one event at the side of the Automation System OPC Server in this case (the 51st) and based on an event occuring over there you can just do a group read of the 50 others. Also keep in mind that the maximum rate (6500 updates per second) from inside LabVIEW with the DSC Module OPC client I/O server was also mentioned in this document (http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/63C043359F1E12538625726E005BCD0C?OpenDocument).
Could this be a possible solution for your problem?
If you're using one of the OPC servers in this list (http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/6417#toc19), then you can also use NI OPC Servers to update tags instead, which supports a faster update rate.

  • Multiple errors with DSC modules modbus master and slave

    Hi,
I've searched quite a lot of posts but haven't found solution for my problem. I'm playing with LabVIEW DSC module and it's modbus master and slave functionalities. Even the LabVIEWs own modbus examples (Modbus Simulator and Fundamentals) seem to work randomly or not at all: When checking the Variable Manager utility Modbus Simulator (i.e. modbus slave/server) seems to deploy variables correctly with good quality but Modbus Fundamentals (i.e. modbus master/client) most often shows unknown value or bad quality for all the variables. When running the VIs I get 'Error -1950679035 Unable to locate variable in the Shared Variable Engine' and sometimes some other errors too. If the Modbus Simulator (slave/server) is expected to work fine I guess I should get two slaves communicating, but this isn't happening either. So maybe Modbus Simulator example isn't working either.
I've tried undeploying and deploying the libraries, stopping and starting the SVE, booting PC, reinstalling DSC module, and setting firewall and antivirus software off. This problem is going on with two different computers, both of which have recently installed LabVIEW 2011, first PC with Win XP and second PC with Win 7. No other OPC servers should be installed to these computers. And what is really interesting, the problem seems to have nothing to do with my network since Simulator and Fundamentals examples are not working even if the network cable is unplugged!
Any suggestions? Replies are highly appreciated!

V8 has the same feature, but the words are different.
The Generator typically uses the Driver time base, and the Gl. Var Write is writing once per block.
So, to see all values, you must have a block size of one.
I set up the Driver timebase to 10 Hz, block size of 1. The Generator and the Read Variable default to the Driver timebase.
The Generator is making a 2 Hz Rectangle waveform. YOu can see that it's shifted, but otherwise intact.

  • Security Vulnerabilities in LabVIEW DSC and Lookout - W32/Sdbot.worm

    The LabVIEW DSC
module and Lookout install the Microsoft MSDE 2000 database. By default, the 'sa' password is left blank.  Several viruses exploit this this known security vulnerability in MSDE 2000.
You can prevent infection by applying a secure 'sa' password to MSDE 2000.
Make sure the MSSQL Server service is running
Execute the following command line (replace new_password with the desired password):
    osql -U"sa" -P"" -Q"sp_password NULL, 'new_password', 'sa'"
In particular, variants of the W32/Sdbot.worm virus are known to exploit this vulnerability.
Refer to this KB or the DSC Module readme for more information.

    1) I believe all LabVIEW DSC systems since 7.0
    2) You should see an SQL Server icon in the system tray and selecting it you will see a green arrow if it is running and a red square if it is not. If you have the full version of SQL Server installed or a version such as 2005 this might be different. In my case for the Microsoft SQL Server Development Edition I have a separate application called SQL Server Configuration Manager inside the start menu that shows an overview over this and other things.
    3) Click on the icon in the system tray and select start, or go to above mentioned Configuration Manager if available or if you want to go on the deepest level go to the Administrative Tools Control Panel and select Services and in there make the SQL Server service started.
    4) I would think a real command console to be a bit more appropriate as you can see the feedback if something went wrong.
    5) If the Firewall is worth anything I would strongly expect this yes.

  • How can I install (download) a Labview FPGA code onto Altera FPGA chip using Labview FPGA module?

    Hi there
Guys i'm a very new labview user (PhD student), my project is about ( design and implementation of a high speed-yet sophisticated system using Labview environment then install this project's code (using Labview FPGA module) onto Altera-made FPGA chip).
so kindly, can any body help me in this?...is there any way to connect labview with Altera FPGA?...please anything would be said 'd be of great benifits
    thanks a lot in advance.

as previously mentioned, labview fpga only supports national instruments targets utilizing xilinx fpgas. the hdl generated by labview fpga is encrypted and cannot be used to synthesize a design outside the labview fpga design flow.
however, if you must use labview for your project, it might be possible for you to design the system in labview and use one of the labview embedded modules ( http://www.ni.com/embedded )to generate c code which you can then port to systemc and compile for the altera fpga. i'm not saying it will be easy, but it should be possible.

  • LabVIEW 8.6.1 DSC Module and SQL Server Agent

I had the following system constellation:
    - LabVIEW Professional Dev System 8.6.1 installed (complete)
    - SQL Server 2005 Express
Since Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 is no longer distributed, I had to install SQL Server 2008 Express on my system, too.
Everything is working fine, but after installing the 2008 Express version the SQL Server Agent appears in the '2008 instance!
This is quite good, but normaly the Express editions doesn't contain the Agent...?!
Since LV8.5 (?) the DSC module uses Microsoft SQL Server Express, right? (--> This is very good, but the documentation of the DSC module is more than bad.!!)
Is there any context between SQL 2008 Express <--> LV DSC??

    Hi _avr_,
There's no documentation about LV DSC
supporting SQL Express 2008 because it's not supported. It may work if
you were to detach the database and reattach it, but it's something we
    have not tested.
You are writing, that SQL Server 2005 Express is no longer distributed, however this is a Software which is a part of Installation Pack of a DSC Module. So if you have the DVD for LabVIEW with DSC Module you could install it without any problem. For DSC Module 8.6 we included the SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 on the DVD.
I do not really now why in your case the Agent is appering. You have right, the SQL Server 2008 Express does not contain any Agent.I do not have any explenation for it.
NI supports only DSC with SQL Server 2005 Express. The DSC Module 2009 is also working with SQL Server 2005 Express SP1. For Windows 7 SQL 2005 SP3 is recomended.
I would suggest you to deinstall the SQL Server 2008 Express.

Hi, When you connect to NI OPC Server by creating New I/O Server > OPC Client. You will see all registered OPC Servers running on local machine or remote machine. I used KepServerEx from Kepware and LSIS OPC Server from LG with no problems. Just make sure that the OPC server is running.
    Hope it helps

  • LabView 2014 - DSC module with Ethernet Modbus: Error 56

    Sorry,
I try to connect modbus by Labview 2014 DSC module like this figure, and it occurred error code 56 at "Read Input Registers",
I have look for many soluctions, but still fail, can someone help me? thank you very much!

Did you confirm the address and port of your slave device is correct? Also, is your device a modbus master device or slave device?
I suggest you to read the help first, and then run the corresponding example
You can run the two example to test if the modbus function is OK. Then you can come back to test your third party device.

  • Response time between LabVIEW w/DSC module and RSLinx OPC server hosting FlexLogix PLC tags too long

We are experiencing communication response time delays between LabVIEW with DSC module and RsLinx OPC Server hosting all FlexLogix PLC tags (around 500-600 tags).
The nominal response time for the system watchdog is < 500ms, but we occasionally have spikes of up to 1.5 seconds once every few days even when the system is idling.
Changing more than six PLC connected shared variables at the same time from LabVIEW also causes the watchdog response times to spike above 500ms.
Our watchdog is programmed so that LabVIEW toggles the watchdog bit to 1 as soon the shared variable event detects that the PLC has toggled it to 0. The PLC, however, waits 300 ms until it toggles it.
    Our system:
    Windows XP SP3
    LabVIEW 9 F3
    RSLinx Opc Server v2.54
    Allen Bradley FlexLogix PLC

What is your update rate set for in the RSLink OPC server?
You aren't toggling the same flag from both ends are you?

  • LabView DSC, RSLinx, SLC505 and Data transfer (Best way for large blocks of data?)

I am currently programming in Labview 6.1 with the Datalogging and
Supervisory Control module to transfer 720 floating point numbers to a
SLC505 Allen Bradley PLC (with ethernet) using RSLinx as an OPC server. I
have found that using the Datasocket Write takes about 30 - 40 seconds, and
making the tags and writing to them takes about the same amount of time. Is
it possible to transfer this data faster?
    Thanks,
    Michael Thomson (Surcher)

    Cyril,
I was just experimenting with different ways to transfer the data from the
computer to the PLC. In the past I have built large tag databases with
specific tag names. This made the code rather cumbersome when you wanted to
write to a large group of tags with descriptive names. I was just using
datasocket write as a way to transfer the data to the plc using code to
build the url and without having the DSC engine running. I have found that
importing the tags right from the tag configuration editor with the names
being simply the PLC addresses and then accessing them with the tag write is
considerably faster (under 5 seconds). I can then build the names in an
embedded for/next loop and change them to a tag name before I write to each
    one. The appli
cation is a user interface that allows the machine operator
to pick what kind of arch to put on cabinet door part. With the selections
chosen I calculate the servo moves and download the data to the PLC.
    Thanks for the link!
