Help - Custom Jumpstart 10/09 x86 with ZFS

Hi,
I'm trying to Jumpstart Solaris 10/09 x86 with ZFS root paritition. Everything seems to be going okay. My problems are
1. The Server does not automatically boot after completing jumpstart
2. After installation, everytime I reboot the newly jumpstarted machine, I see the following messages on the console, that I don't see with regular installation
# init 6
propagating updated GRUB menu
File </boot/grub/menu.lst> propagation successful
File </etc/lu/GRUB_backup_menu> propagation successful
File </etc/lu/menu.cksum> propagation successful
File </sbin/bootadm> propagation successful
Do you know why I see this progagating message?
My rules.ok file is
root@dev # cat rules.ok
any - - my_profile -
# version=2 checksum=3418
root@dev #
root@dev # cat my_profile
install_type initial_install
system_type standalone
cluster SUNWCreq
pool rpool auto auto auto mirror c1t0d0s0 c1t1d0s0
bootenv installbe bename s10x_u8wos_08a dataset /var
root@dev #
Thank you,
Jacob

Okay, I figured out why I'm getting the File </boot/grub/menu.lst> propagation successful,etc. messages. Its because I had
bootenv installbe bename s10x_u8wos_08a dataset /var
in my jumpstart profile. When that line exists, another boot env is installed, also Live Upgrade is installed when that line exists. Removing that line Live Upgrade is not installed and an alternate boot environment is not installed. But now the problem is, I would like to have a separate dataset for /var and unfortunately it is not possible to create it without the bootenv line.
Does anyone know how I could have the "best of both worlds", ie have separate dataset for /var and not having to install a new boot env.
Thank you,
Jacob.

  • Boot from second hard drive with ZFS in Solaris 10 x86

    Hi,
    The usual menu.lst to boot Solaris10 x86 with a boot environment that contains a ZFS boot loader is this one
    title Solaris 10 5/08 s10x_nbu6wos_nightly X86
    findroot (pool_rpool,0,a)
    kernel$  /platform/i86pc/multiboot  -B $ZFS-BOOTFS
    module /platform/i86pc/boot_archive
    title Solaris failsafe
    findroot (pool_rpool,0,a)
    kernel /boot/multiboot kernel/unix -s    -B console=ttyb
    module /boot/x86.miniroot-safeI understand that to add an alternate boot disk, I have to play with installgrub and then attach it in the pool.
    But my question is : Is there a way to boot from my alternate hard disk by adding a new entry in menu.lst or is the only
    way is to modify the BIOS parameter?
    Thanks for your help,

    Thanks for your answer Alan,
    But ok, I imagineI can add a grub entry. But what I want to know is what is the exact way to boot from an alternate hard disk on Solaris 10u6
    x86.AFAIK there are only two ways to do this. Select the disks via BIOS which becomes a royal PITA in a short amount of time or play with a boot manager such as GRUB until you get the syntax right.
    Personally I put all OS's on the primary disks if possible to avoid these situations and if I have others to play with then you can easily mount them in or set them up as D: drive etc...
    The only exception would be in an enterprise setting where you need to do things such as mirroring but then again in those situations it's only one OS per machine anyways so it's much easier.
    So at the end, I am not sure what I have to configure and what is the procedure to boot from my alternate boot diskTry the grub homepage for the grub manual and hopefully for a mailing list or try a search engine.
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-5461/zfsboot-1?a=view
    has an example to follow of using -B.
    And moreover, the installgrub does not working for me :
    root@mac1 # zpool status
    pool: rpool
    state: ONLINE
    scrub: resilver completed after 0h2m with 0 errors on Thu Mar 26 10:56:24 2009
    config:
    NAME          STATE     READ WRITE CKSUM
    rpool         ONLINE       0     0     0
    mirror      ONLINE       0     0     0

    c5t4d0s0  ONLINE       0     0     0

    root@mac1 # installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c5t4d0s0

    You shouldn't need to do an installgrub if you installed Solaris. Try c5t4d0s0 not s2.

  • 10 update 6 - Jumpstart with ZFS root

    Please help me to solve the problem with jumpstart and root on zfs in update 6:
    On server:
    #grep pool profile
    pool zfs all auto auto auto
    ...ok, but on a client:
    #/sbin/install-solaris
    ...<skip>...
    ERROR: Field 1 - Keyword "auto" is invalid
    Solaris installation program exited.
    The manuals says that this keyword is appeared in the Update 6 (10/08).
    What's wrong?
    Thanks.

    Is it possible that someone could elaborate on the solution a little more? I copied the check file from the 10_08 DVD to no avail. The Solaris install root is 10/08 and I've correctly updated the solaris_media_locations file, but I still get this error. I cannot find a mention of the word "pool" in my profiles, but of course, I am using "rpool".
    ERROR: Field 1 - Keyword "pool" is invalid
    Solaris installation program exited.
    Thanks,

  • Solaris 10 x86 custom jumpstart pxe/dhcp install problem

    Ok, I have a custom jumpstart server installed and working (sort of...) when installing onto just a single client. It works perfect. It installs, reboots and comes up just fine. BUT...
    The DHCP portion of the server has 230 addresses allocated from an private IP block.
    The problem is, when i try to custom jumpstart 20 servers at the same time, the PXE portion times out and fails on all of the clients.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your answers.
    Yes, both machines have the same hardware exactly. Finally, I could find where the problem was.
    The file bootenv.rc, for some reason that I don't know, was corrupted: In it there was a correct line with bootpath variable correctly defined, but, at the end of the file, there was another line setting the bootpath variable to a long and incoherent string of chars. Booting in failsafe, mounting the system in /a, and removing that stupid line from the bootenv.rc, solved the problem.

  • Lucreate with zfs system

    Hello,
    Am relatively new to using liveupgrade to patch solaris 10 systems, but so far have found it to work pretty well. I have come across an oddity on a system that I would like to have explained. The system has solaris 10 installed, with one zfs pool rpool, and when I create an alternate BE to patch with: lucreate -n altBEname, it does not use the clone/snapshots of zfs to quickly create the alternate BE. It looks like it is creating a full copy (like lucreate does on our systems using ufs), and takes about 45 minutes to 1 hr to complete. On other solaris 10 systems installed with zfs, the lucreate command completes in a minute or so, and a snapshot along with the alternate BE is in the zfs list output. On this system there is no snapshot, only the alternate BE. Below is output from commands run on the system to show what I am trying to describe. Any ideas what might be the problem, thanks:

  • Solaris x86 with Oracle RAC 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0

    Hello,
    Maybe you can help me (new on RMAN backup) in doing this.
    I have configured a single Oracle 10g database to have backup with RMAN with following steps:
    1. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/rman_scripts
    2. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/logs
    3. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/tracking
    4. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/c_backup
    5. $ sqlplus sys/<password> as sysdba
    6. SQL> alter system set db_recovery_file_dest_size = 50G scope=both;
    7. SQL> alter system set db_recovery_file_dest='${ ORACLE_BASE}/flash_recovery_ area' scope=both;
    8. SQL> alter system set log_archive_dest_10='location= use_db_recovery_file_dest';
    9. SQL> shutdown immediate
    10. SQL> startup nomount
    11. SQL> alter database archivelog;
    12. SQL> alter database open;
    13. SQL> alter database enable block change tracking using file '${ORACLE_BASE}/tracking/rman_ change_track.f';
    14. $ rman target /
    15. RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK
    TO '/var/opt/oracle/flash_ recovery_area/ORCL/c_backup/% F';
    16. RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    17. RMAN> CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
    18. RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;
    19. RMAN> exit
    I need to configure incremental backup with RMAN on a two node Solaris x86 with Oracle RAC 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 installation.
    We also use ASM to store database files, and have Oracle software installed on separate file systems (two Oracle roots for Node1 and Node2).
    I have following questions:
    1) where to put Flash Recovery Area (FRA)?
    I saw recommendations to put FRA on the ASM, is this the best way to do it?
    2) Can I put FRA on another file system (not on the ASM) which is available only from Node1? This way I can save space on the ASM.
    3) Is it possible/recommended to run RMAN from Node1 only?
    Below is the script used to run RMAN on the normal Oracle database (without RAC) which I need to change :
    =============================================================================================
    2.0 Oracle backup script: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh
    Use this for daily backups, possiblly as a cron job.
    Once a week run this: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh FULL
    All other days of the week: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh INCREMENTAL
    Note: You may have to change ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_BASE below to match your database.
    =============================================================================================
    #!/usr/bin/ksh
    ORACLE_SID=orcl
    ORACLE_BASE=/opt/app/oracle
    ORACLE_HOME=${ORACLE_BASE}/product/10.2.0/db_1
    PATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/bin:/usr/bin
    LOGDIR=${ORACLE_BASE}/logs
    LOGFILE=${LOGDIR}/rman.log
    if [[ $# < 1 ]]
    then
    echo "usage: backup.sh FULL|INCREMENTAL"
    exit;
    fi
    BACKUPTYPE=${1}
    full='FULL'
    incremental='INCREMENTAL'
    if [[ $BACKUPTYPE == $full ]]
    then
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append << eof
    run {
    backup database;
    SQL 'alter system archive log current';
    backup archivelog all;
    delete noprompt obsolete;
    exit;
    eof
    echo ''
    fi
    if [[ $BACKUPTYPE == $incremental ]]
    then
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append << eof
    run {
    backup database;
    backup incremental level 1 database;
    SQL 'alter system archive log current';
    backup archivelog all;
    delete noprompt obsolete;
    exit;
    eof
    echo ''
    fi

    Hi [email protected],
    Q1) where to put Flash Recovery Area (FRA)?
    A1) With RAC: on the shared storage
    I saw recommendations to put FRA on the ASM, is this the best way to do it?
    If you want your backups to be available for both nodes you have to use shared storage or tape using an mml library.
    So if you want to use the FRA for rman backups and the database is on ASM just make ASM the standard for the FRA as well.
    Q2) Can I put FRA on another file system (not on the ASM) which is available only from Node1? This way I can save space on the ASM.
    A2) Than you cannot recover in case Node1 is down. Best would be to send your storage admin to a training course so he can manage the clustered raw devices needed for ASM.
    Q3) Is it possible/recommended to run RMAN from Node1 only?
    A3) No see A2.

    Tycho

  • How to create a full system image for Solaris 10 with ZFS

    Dear friend,
    could you please advice which way to create a full system image for Solaris 10 with ZFS is trusted and practically used?
    I'm searching the analogy like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image but with ZFS support.
    I have x86 server Sun Netra X4270.

  • Custom reports do not run with error message: Routine FDPREP cannot read ..

    Hi
    Can anybody help me with this issue pls?
    The dev system is cloned from production a few days ago. After running the post clone procedure, the dev is working fine except when we are trying to run custom reports, it errorred out with error message - Routine FDPREP cannot read the file /fmis/11.5.0/reports/US/POXPRPO1.rep. I have checked the env files, and they seem ok. $CUSTOM_TOP is set to the correct value. Other standard Oracle reports are running properly. The custom report file extension is in low case (.rdf). I've even tried to compile the report manually by using rwcon60.sh, the rep file was created under that folder but concurrent manager is still giving the same error message. So I am suspecting whther it is the path issue, as from the error message we can see up there, it is not showing the absolute path. Can anyone pls shed some lights on this for me?
    Thanks!
    Liang

    Hi hsawwan,
    Echo $FMIS_TOP(Custom Top) returns /global/app/fdev/home/fdevapp/findevappl/fmis/11.5.0, which is the correct path.
    Interesting thing is I checked the custom forms and they are working properly , our current configuration is form server and web server are sitting on one node, and CM, admin and database are sitting on the other node. So it seems it is the CM node settings caused the problem. However, I've just compared the APPSORA.env, customfindev_XXXXXX.env $FMIS_TOP (Custom Top) on the two nodes, and nothing seems out of ordinary.
    Thanks,
    Liang

    Anyone have a similar experience with this release?

    This release like the previous one require updating "check" script for rules.ok from this release. The notes also indicate your host should have the latest firmware (prom) release. I'd make sure the blade 100 is supported. double check your entries for this host in bootparams to assure you removed the old and re-added this release. Mostly I'd "boot net -v install" so you can see the verbose output which should show you the issue just before dumping you into the menu. I have installed this release via normal jumpstart in V240 and T2000 clients with no issue. However I have an upgrade from 8/07 that fails when checking diskspace so I can't say upgrades work. From your description it almost seems like it's not finding the sysidcfg at all but your verbose boot will show all the details.
    good luck, JB

  • ./setup_install_server failing with ZFS

    I recently upgraded my jumpstart server to 10/08 with ZFS boot. My installation media is located under /export/install/media, where /export/install is a ZFS file system (zpool1/install).
    I'm trying to add Solaris 9 installation media, but setup_install_client errors as follows:
    2009-01-14 12:06:44 # ./setup_install_server /export/install/media/Solaris_9_905hw_sparc
    ERROR: zpool1/install is not a local filesystem, cannot export /export/install/media/Solaris_9_905hw_sparc for install clients
    2009-01-14 12:06:58 #I assume setup_install_client from older install media isn't smart enough to handle an underlying ZFS file system. Is there some way around this?

    You could probably hack setup_install_server to not worry about that check. Or you could just copy of the image directory yourself to the correct location.

  • Client Push on Windows 7 x86 with IE9 open.

    I everyone, I need to validate something.
    I am currently deploying SCCM 2012 R2 for a client of mine.
    They are using mainly Windows 7 with SP1 x86 with IE9 installed.
    When doing  client push from the console or installing any SCCM agent update, we are getting an error message stating the IE just crashed and the error is talking about IEFrame.dl:
    Doing the same thing on a Windows 7 with SP1 x64 is not getting an error message.
    Anyone can reproduce the error on is side? Or anyone know a workaround for this issue?
    We are talking about SCCM 2012 R2 CU3 doing a client push on a Windows 7 with SP1.
    There is no update done on Windows (I was using the default install.wim at first then applied all updates) and IE9 is installed (installation file downloaded at
    http://techdows.com/2011/03/download-ie9-final-offlinestandalone-installer.html).
    I will try the same thing with a all the updates installed on Windows 7 x86.
    Thank you for your help.
    Mathieu

    After some troubleshooting and a bit of luck, the problem is the following:
    The December update KB3008923 (Cumulative Update for IE December 2014) was causing the problem on IE9.
    The update released on January 2015 KB3025945 is fixing the issue.
    This is not an update available through WSUS so you have to look for it at
    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com.
    There is a bit more information, the problem is recurring but I did not found which task was causing the error so it was not only the installation that was causing the problem. After installing the KB3008923, the problem was present on any x86 Windows 7
    computer running any version of configMgr agent (tested on 2012 SP1 and 2012 R2).
    After installing the January update, the problem is gone.

  • Custom Jumpstart CDs

    I'm having a hell of a time making a Solaris 8 custom jumpstart CD. I've got as far as booting from the CD, installing everything but then when the system reboots, I get a "file not executable" error. There's nothing useful on the hard disk ...
    The relevant blueprint says to use "Software CD 1" as a template for the slices. Does this mean the first software CD or the install CD? Much of the documentation for this process talks about using CD "1 of 2" but I have three - an install CD and two software CDs.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi
    I believe it's referring to Software CD 1 of 2 and 2 of 2.
    You don't need to use the first "install" CD to load Solaris. This just seem to give you the Web Kiosk loader.
    regards
