Help in choosing Elements 10 Organiser or iPhoto

Can experienced users please give me some bullet point advice?
Have used full version of Photoshop 6 on PC with all photos saved in folders with Explorer file structure.  The "library" is on disc retaining the same structure awaiting transfer to my new iMac v10.7.4.  I have an iPad3 and will probably upgrade my "unsmart" phone to an iPhone 4 or 5 shortly.  I would be grateful if any functionality advice bears in mind the use of my tablet and possible smart phone.  The majority of photos are purely of the home variety and only a few will ever be modified for printing etc.  A few will become art projects and may be intensively modified with versions moved to multi-media project folders once identified.
I have uploaded some photos from my camera direct to iPhoto and also imported them from there to Organiser.  I haven't formatted the camera card yet.  I have been experimenting with transfer procedures between the two photo managers and Editor and saving modified photos, experiencing problems and benefits and at the same time reading the forums/discussions to solve problems.  On the way, I've picked up the expected do's and dont's.  The main one is clearly that I need to decide between Organiser and iPhoto.  The second is that both of these are a better way of managing my library than the one-dimensional "tree" structure of Finder or Explorer.
Regardless of whether new photos are managed in Organiser or iPhoto, are they saved in the same location?
Is this a location I should move my library to?
Does it matter from the point of importing and future saving that uploaded photos and library may be different locations?
Presumably it would be better to import small batches of my library at a time to either manager to aid tagging/labelling/face recognition?
Is there any benefit in my situation in uploading new photos to Finder before importing to the chosen manager.
Given my hardware, actual and potential, and usage, what are the pros and cons of Organiser and iPhoto, or if this is too big an ask, which one might seem better suited?
Thanks for reading this far.
Neil

I'm not a Mac user, so I have no comment about Macs, iPads and iPhones.
I noted that certain photos might become intensively modified as part of art projects, the original kept in Organiser/iPhoto and the project version/s with a multi-media project folder elsewhere.  Are you saying this is not possible?
I'm saying the exact opposite. Your originals can be anywhere you want them to be. Your modified photos can be anywhere you want them to be, even if that is a different location than the originals. Emphasis on the word anywhere. Emphasis on the phrase "anywhere you want them to be". Done properly, PSE has no problem with this. By the way, you'd want the modified version to be known to PSE's Organizer as well as the original. Important point: The photos, both original and modified, must be on your hard disk. They are NOT stored within the Organizer. The Organizer knows where they are, and so can make use of them. A corrollary of this is that you need to do all photo management, including moving them should you so desire, via the Organizer, and not via your operating system.
Or because you seem to favour uploading photos directly to Organiser?  Is that because it is easier or functionally better?
When the photos come out of the camera (or other device), you can, in one step (if you want) copy them from the camera to their storage location on the hard disk, while simultaneously importing the photo into PSE's Organizer. One task for you the human user, but two tasks for the software. You are in complete control of where the photo gets stored. You can choose the default location, or you can choose a location that has specific meaning to you for your task.
Sounds like Barbara's advice would be very important at this point ... try the software and see if it meets your needs. PSE has a 30 day free trial.
At first, you mentioned PSE's ability to organize according to more than a single hierarchy, but your concerns seems to be putting the photos exactly where you need them, and not the organizing capabilities of PSE. I sense a disconnect here. The organizing capabilities (tags) in PSE allow you to basically ignore or forget the folder location, and so to be honest, I have no idea what folders my photos are in, but I can find them instantly by the tags in PSE; you seem to want very specific folder locations which is the opposite of my use of PSE.

  • Terrance Devlin answered a question about iPhoto (4-2012) re:copying iPhoto Library to an ExHD, and losing all the albums. I can't locate the "Choose Library" when I open iPhoto with the opt button. Can anyone help?

I tried to move my images (over 25,000) to an External Hard drive to open up some memory, hoping to make my computer run faster. It took three hours to move the images and I see them all in the mac's menus. However when I try to open them with iPhoto now, none appeared. and when I tried to import them back to the main HD they come in to iPhoto just fine, but not with the albums nor any of the massive organization i'd created in the original. this represents years of images, and I can't imagine that I'd have to recopy them into folders/albums again.
Terrance Devlin answered a similar question back in April of last year. He said to make sure the ExHD is formatted to MAC OS Extended (Journaled) and to move the library to the ExHD and then open iPhoto with the option button and select "Choose Library" from the resulting menu.
Command "I" tells me that the new drive is formatted correctly. I can't locate the "Choose Library" when I open iPhoto with the opt button.
First, I wondered if the application needs to be on the same drive as the Library. I sure would like to know if I can find out how to restore all the folders I had them in. Terrance's advice helped the user that had asked the question.

Can anyone help? I'm using iPhoto 5. My MAC is an OS X version 10.4.11.

    Here are Apple's instructions:
If you are using iPhoto ’06 or earlier, you will need to follow these steps to tell iPhoto where the Library is now located:
Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto. Keep the Option key held down until you are prompted to create or choose an iPhoto Library.
    Click Choose Library.
Locate and select the iPhoto Library in its new location.
    (from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229 )
Below (in the link below) is what you should see when holding down the option key and opening iPhoto. Keep holding down the option key until this dialogue comes up. You want to select the Choose Library button.

  • I need help organising my iPhoto please

Can someone help me with my iPhoto.
I have 14,400 photos in my iPhoto library.
I have albums which contain the photos from the library,as I assumed once you created an album it would eliminate them from the library.
Consequently I have lots of albums with what I thought was trying to was create some order ...but instead it's left me with photos everywhere.
To create more dilema,I lost my hard-drive a few years ago and had not backed up any photos(5 years worth)....luckily for me my brother had backed up some and put them back into iPhoto for me but for some reason I now have 3 and 4 of the same photo.
To make it more annoying the photos whilst there may be 3 of the same they are all different pixel sizes? Not sure how this happened?
I've also got 3,300 photos in trash that I'm too scared to delete incase I don't have that exact photo in the library.
Is there any easy way to sort this out, because the problem is getting worse as I try to create order?
Is it possible to organize them all into folders that way I can delete them from the library and trash ?
    Thanks in advance

Apr 6, 2013 9:07 AM (in response to flyinghostie)
Would you mind to clarify a few points, please?
I have 14,400 photos in my iPhoto library.
    o.k.
I have albums which contain the photos from the library,as I assumed once you created an album it would eliminate them from the library.
Consequently I have lots of albums with what I thought was trying to was create some order ...but instead it's left me with photos everywhere.
That part is not clear to me.
What kind of albums are you talking about? Do you mean iPhoto albums as seen in the "Albums" section of the source list?
Yes the albums are contained in the Albums section
as I assumed once you created an album it would eliminate them from the library.
Albums will index and organize the photos in your library, but not store them and not remove them from the library. All photos need to be contained in an event. When you are referring to "library", are you referring to your iPhoto library or to the "Library" section in the source list in the iPhoto window?
Yes the library I'm referring to is the Iphoto library.I do have Events also...will organising Events take them out of my Libraray?
.but instead it's left me with photos everywhere.
Perhaps you are confused by iPhoto showing you different views of the same photos.
The top part of the source list "Library" gives you access to all your photos based on the events, as list of all "Photos", organized by the Faces, or organized by the Places. You can access the same photos in four different ways.
The "Recent" section gives you access based on the date; but again you will see the very same photos, only grouped differently.
These are the access paths predefined by iPhoto. The "Albums" section and "Projects" section will give you additional custom structures to retrieve your photos, the access structure you define yourself. But it will not remove the default organisation created by iPhoto, only supplement it with your own custom structures.
To make it more annoying the photos whilst there may be 3 of the same they are all different pixel sizes? Not sure how this happened?
Now, this is probably caused by the way you reimported your photos into your new library. When you take the folders from an iPhoto library and simply import all folders, you will import each photo in three different sizes, for the library contains thumbnails, previews, and full size original image files and versions.
Would it be possible for you to repeat the import step from the backup your brother has made for you? It might be easier to sort your photos in the finder by size and only to import the full size image files, then to do that manually. What is the backup like, that your brother has made? Is it an iPhoto library or a folder containing photos and folders of your old iPhoto library?
I'm not sure how my brother saved the photos as it's been years since he re imported them for me,I'd rather do this myself than trouble him again.I've thought maybe I can set up a folder on my desktop and drag all the main photos from the library into there, then delete iPhoto and start all over again?
But before you proceed with deleting photos that you are not sure about, create a backup of the library, so you will be safe, if you accidentally delete too much.

  • Elements 8 Organiser will not load Photoshop as External Editor

For some years I've succesfully used Photoshop CS2 with Elements (various versions) Organiser as my photo file manager.  The Organiser allowed me to select Photoshop as the external editor and subsequently accepted/managed the edited photos from Photoshop when I closed the file there.  (I prefer the facilities of Organiser to those of Bridge; and other folk in the household prefer Elements Editor).
I recently upgraded from Photoshop CS2 to CS5 64bit.  Initially Elements 8 Organiser (which is 32bit) continued to call up Photoshop (CS5) as the external editor but has now ceased to do so.  There is still an option in Organiser's dropdown EDIT list to "Edit in Photoshop" and any thumbnails selected in the Organiser get the "being edited" label applied if I select the "Edit with Photoshop" option.  However, Photoshop does not open;  or, if I have Photoshop open already, the photos selected in Organiser do not appear in the Photoshop workspace for editing.
I cannot, either, find the "close external edit" option in Organiser. When I eventually close Organiser, it warns that I will lose any editing done with the external editor to those photos it thinks it has handed to Photoshop, even though there has not been any handover in fact.
I can chose, in Organiser, to edit the very same photos with Elements Editor, even though Organiser appears to think that they are currently being edited by Photoshop.  If I do edit such a photo in Elements Editor then close it, the Organiser becomes happy and forgets it thought Photoshop was involved at all.
Is there some switch in a config file somewhere that I can throw to get the Organiser to actually call up Photoshop and hand it the file(s)?  Or is this just an Adobe glitch?  Any help or clues would be much appreciated.

    Graham,
I have tried to persuade Elements Organiser to reconsider Photoshop as an external editor by going to the "Editing" section of Elements Preferences dialogues and specifying Photoshop.exe.  However, no matter which version of Photoshop.exe I point at (64bit CS5, 32bit CS5 or even the old 32bit CS2) Elements tells me that it automatically already has Photoshop as an external editor and I don't need to specify it as such.
On trying to exit the Preferences/Editing dialogue, Elements then pops up another dialogue box that tells me that "The path you chose for the external editing application is invalid.  Please correct the path or choose another external editor".  I need to uncheck the "Use a supplementary editing application" to stop this box re-popping.
The Elements EDIT drop down menu still shows Photoshop as an available editing application.  However, as described in the original post, Photoshop does not load or pick up any file specified for Photoshop editing within Elements Organiser.
I've also tried resetting Elements Organiser Preferences to their default.  This does not make any difference to the problem either.  There is an Organiser glitch I think.  I am begining to think it will need a Registry fix ..... but of what I have no real idea; and it isn't a good idea to mess with the Registry in a haphazard way.
Perhaps I should try a reload of Elements from scratch, after saving my Catalogue file somewhere safe?

  • Saving pictures edited in Elements 6 back to iPhoto

I am have started editing pictures in Elements 6 by choosing that as the default editor. When I try to save the picture back to iPhoto it does not show up in the folder it seems to be saved to. Am I having several senior moments here? I go File > SaveAs and choose the event file in iPhoto.

This also may be of some help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Pls Help a newbie - editing photos in PS8 - iPhoto

    Hi
I've got a brand new mac - never had a mac before so bear with me. I am trying to learn this iPhoto etc. Just installed Photoshop Elements 8. But I am at a loss as how to use it all.
I manage to set PSE as the editor from iPhoto. I learned that I need to start in iPhoto when I want to edit or open anything. Done. When I edit a photo in PSE and click 'save', iPhoto nicely updates the image in the library.
But when I make copy (I do not want to touch the original file so make a new image file) it gets stored somewhere else on the computer and is not visible in iPhoto. Importing it did not work either (although I am still not clear WHERE it is saved).
How on earth can I keep all my image files (which will consist of originals (jpg and tiffs) and edited photos (jpg and tiff) together? I was hoping iPhoto would be the ideal (I am a previous pc user so am used to just storing things in 'my documents' and 'my images').
    Please help!
    Thank you very much.

what is the function of iphoto over standard folders?
FIles in folders give you just that: files in folders.
Photos in iPhoto (or Aperture) give you unlimited ways to categorise, organise and find any photo in your collection, plus multiple ways to share those photos.
For instance I often use the following to illustrate ways in which you can organise with iPhoto:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 25k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
(Try do that with files and folders!)
On top of that: Pics in iPhoto or Aperture are available in every single Open... or Attach... window in the entire OS etc etc etc

You are probably choosing the obvious file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. The actual editor is hidden away inside the Support Files folder. The PSE file at the top level of the PSE folder in Applications is just an alias for the welcome screen and what you're describing is exactly what happens when you choose that. You want this one:

  • How to create/choose a sales organisation?

    Hello everybody,
i am working with mySAP CRM trying to create a marketing campaign. I am struggling how to create / use a sales organisation.
What i can do is create a sales organisation (within "create organisation modell", sorry using the german version, so definitions are maybe not correct)
When i now want to create a Product catalog, i have to choose a sales organisation, but it just say "no values found"
So my question is, is there a need to activate my sales organisation, or is something else wrong.
Hopefully some of you can help.
    Best regards
    Heinz

    Hi Heinz,
Once you make changes to org model, if it has to be visible for applicaitons working on the model. You have to perform the following activity:
    1. Goto SAP CRM IMG Menu: Customer Relationship Management ->Master Data -> Organizational Management -> Tools -> Update List of Organizational Objects
Execute the object for Sales Org.
    2. Also Check the consistency of the attribute assignments to the organizational units in the SAP CRM IMG Menu: Customer Relationship Management -> Master Data -> Organizational Management -> Tools ->Check Settings for  Attribute Maintenance
    3. Also, perform Org data settings check in the SAP CRM IMG Menu: Customer Relationship Management -> Master Data -> Organizational Management -> Tools -> Organizational Data Settings Check
    4. Execute Report HRBCI_ATTRIBUTES_BUFFER_UPDATE is used to buffer the attributes of organizational management objects. To enable buffering you have to maintain view T77OMATTR.
Use transaction SE38 to execute the report.
Try doing these, it might help you.

  • I have set up my photos in Adobe Elements 12 organiser and wish to download them to Snapfish in order to create a photobook, but it seems I am unable to do this.  Adobe do not provide a hardcopy photobook service

I have set up my photos in Adobe Elements 12 organiser and wish to download them to Snapfish in order to create a photobook, but it seems I am unable to do this.  Adobe do not provide a hardcopy photobook service.  Can anyone help me please?  I don't want to have to reformat all my photos.  It has taken me the whole week to do it in Adobe Elements.  I was unaware that Adobe no longer have this service as it misleadingly appears that they do.

You are in the wrong forum.  We don't do Elements here.
This is the Photoshop proper forum.  There's no "Organizer" (American spelling) in Photoshop.
    The "Elements" forum is here:
Community: Photoshop Elements | Adobe Community
Incidentally you are not addressing Adobe here.
I've been using Adobe products for very, very close to 30 years, and I have never hear of an "Adobe photo book service".

Hi, Unfortunately, the People and Events tas aren't quite the same as they were in previous versions. I would like to be able to have groups for each, we might see that enhancement one day. Coming from PSE 8, you will find quite a few changes - if you need further help just ask on the forum. Brian

Be grateful for your help with Photoshop Elements which I have been using for several years.  Does Elements need to have access to ‘My Pictures’ on Windows as when I remove Photos from ‘My Pictures’, Elements later, when backing up, gives a message that it is unable to ‘reconnect’ to the same picture on elements.  On other occasions when removing a photo from Elements catalogue I also get a similar message when backing up saying ‘unable to reconnect’.  1. Is there a relationship between Elements and My Pictures and is Elements dependant on    the Windows ‘My Pictures’? 2. Why does some photos in Elements in some cases cause them to multiply e.g. double; triple; quadruple; and on occasions even more?  Is there something I need to do to stop this or an easy way I can remove the multiples without spending hours doing it manually one by one?  Am I doing something wrong? My O/S is Windows XP SP2 and windows Vista on my Laptop.  I have been using Elements 5 and have just purchased Photoshop Elements 8.0. (Upgrade) and about to install it. Be grateful for any advice as I do enjoy using the program if only I can resolve this issue.  I am not a PC wiz and mainly use Elements to catalogue photos from which I compile collections and from them slide shows with music.  Any advice appreciated Sonny.t PS Have tried to post this previously but without success so hoping to see message appear and a +response

The organizer doesn't care where you send your photos when you download them via the downloader or where they happen to be when you first bring them in if you use the Get Photos command, but once your pics are in the Organizer, you *must* move them from within organizer or it can't find them. You don't have to use My Pictures at all if you don't want to, but regardless of the folder where you put your photos, if you want them someplace else, you use organizer to do it.

  • Help me choose a Macbook Pro

Hey everyone, I need some help in choosing which Macbook Pro is right for me.
Basically I'm wondering which of these 2 would be a better choice.

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB471LL/A?mco=MTEzMjIzODU
    What are the main differences?
4gb of ram should be sufficient and I doubt I would ever upgrade to 8gb.
as for graphics, I would mostly only need a mac that would allow me to play the latest Sims games. the first has a graphics memory of 512 and the second has 256.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Help me choose a 865PE board

    Hi,
I need some help in choosing the best(most feature packed, fast etc.) MSI 865PE motherboard.
There are two boards that are pretty identical and trying to find the difference between them has been difficult. They are the Neo2-FIS2R and Neo2-PFISR.
Which one of these two should I buy? They cost about the same. What are the major differences between them?
    Please help me in choosing.
    Thanks!

The faster Prescott's are no longer shown, so maybe they are being re-spec'd again.
Great, I did see this link earlier but I'm confused by several things and please excuse my ignorance but I have been out of the Hardware scene for 4-5 months which is a long time in hight tech.
First thing on this table that I see on the P version is "P4EE Support" what is this? and why does the first table not support it?
On the first table it had a column "PCB Ver." what is this and where can it be found on my computer or Mobo?
So from looking at this link then I can safely say that I can buy a prescott CPU and it will run fine on my neo2 FIS2R?
faster Prescott's, so are there variations in the CPU and will my board be able to handle the faster ones?
Sorry about all the questions but if I can get answers to these then it would be extremely helpful.

    UPDATED:
I do find these two tables very confusing and there is little explanation, To me the first table is saying that all the boards only support P4's and not prescott? the second table is saying that only the Extreme Edition supports prescott?
but the second table also lists the FIS2R etc so its all very confusing????
