Help! UK Tiscali Broadband is killing us.

We are having very difficult time with Tiscali Broadband. On the 7th of September 2006 our tiscali broadband has decided to stop working. Until that day since beginning of March 2006 we have made contract, there is no trouble at all with 3 Macs we have at home (G3 DT OS9.2.2, iBook G3 800MHz OS10.3.9, Powerbook G4 867MHz OS10.3.9, connected via Belkin 56g wireless router). First, we lost internet, then e-mail. After a couple of days internet started working except security site (on line banking, ebay with security and tiscali webmail). Then e-mail came back but we still can't send out mail (we can receive it).
I have contacted tiscali and they gave me many suggestion for Windows and Internet Explorer (cos they dont support macs). I have tried cleaning up all the cache, up date browsers with no luck. Turned firewall on and off but nothing changed. Reatart router more than 10 times. DHCP on and off. MAC address filter on and off. No effect. We have found out that our old dial up connection to Orange works with no problem on all three machine - security site no problem at all.
I suspected that there might be something wrong with the major maintenance work they have done recently - boost up the bandwith to 8MB from 2MB. I have asked tiscali but they simply ignore and kindly told us to ask for help from Apple(!). I believe my router set up is correct but there might be a problem.
Do you have any suggestion what I can do?
Below is our set up.(didn't include G3DT OS9.2.2)
<Our computers>
1) Apple Mac PowerBook G4 867MHz, 1GB RAM, 20GB HD, OSX 10.3.9, Mozilla 1.7.13, Internet Explorer 5.2.3 and Safari 1.3.2
2) Apple Mac iBook G3 800MHz, 512MB RAM, 20GB HD, OSX 10.3.9, Internet Explorer 5.2.3 and Safari 1.3.2
<Modem/Router>
Belkin Wireless Modem Router 4Port, 802.11g, F5D7630-4A
Connecting to the PowerBook G4 via wireless 802.11g using Belkin 54g wireless PC card.
Conneciton to the iBook via cat5 Ethernet cable.
<Rounter Setting>
Connection Type PPPoA
User Name > (my username)
Password > (my password)
IP assigned by ISP > Yes
IP Address > n.a
Subnet Mask > n.a.
VPI/VCI > 0/38
Encapsulation > VC/MUX
Dial on Demand > No

Any suggestion will be appreciated cos me and my wife need internet for our research everyday and for making our life going, and having a kid means our life is rather busy... Thanks.
PowerMacG4 867MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, thanks for your help.
1. Look under System Preferences > Network > TCP/IP
What does it say: it should have an IP address, subnet, and router and also a DNS IPs, UNLESS its DHCP
IP = 192.168.2.4 (given by belkin router. distributed by me using MAC address filteering)
Subnet = 255.255.255.0 (belkin's default setting)
Router = 192.168.2.1 (belikins default setting)
DNS IP = assigned by ISP using DHCP so it doesn't appears in the pane.
Under PPPoE button
Nothing is ticekd (no PPPoE)
Under Apple Talk button
No Apple Talk
Under Proxies button
Only PASV is ticked (no proxies)
Under Ethernet button
Configure Automatically is selected
I hope it may of any help.
Thank you for your help.

  • Help Required - Slow Broadband

    I need help!
I've been suffering with slow broadband since joining BT in in November. When I signed up they estimated performance would be around 2Mb but I'm getting less than 25% of that.
The results from the broadband test are :-
Download Speed achieved 443 Kbps against a acceptable range of 50-500 Kbps
IP profile for line 500 Kbps
    DSL connection rate 576 Kbps (down-stream) 288 Kbps (up-stream)
I have fitted a BT accelerator with no improvement and tried moving my router to the master socket which also made no deference. I'm using the PC a lot more now and at times the performance is bordering on unusable so any help would be greatly appreciated.
When I initially switched I had two hubs fail in quick succession (one power supply failure and a replacement that would not restart from sleep mode) which caused the link to be up and down like a yo-yo in the first few weeks and I'm wondering if this has confused the exchange. The third router has been fine.

  • Help please! Broadband & TV upgrade

    Hey all!
I was just wondering, I live in a flat above a family business (bar & restuarant). My Grandmother already has a type of BT internet fitted but it's not BT Infinity.
The signal I get in my living room & in other places around the flat has a very weak signal which does not stay connected all the time. My Grandmother recently wanted to upgrade to BT Infinity (& the tv upgrade) for my sake so I am able to get my work done online without any interruption from the connection, BUT because when she first got everything installed under the business they are trying to charge her quite a bit more money ontop of her orignal contract even though my Grandmother is only wanting to get the package deal for me in the flat for my benefit..
What I am wanting to find out, is there a way I am able to get everything converted for the flat use rather than the businesses use thats not going to stress & confuse my Grandmother anymore than she already is with all this 'high tech' stuff as she would say. Thanks a million for your time, hope to hear some good news !
    Regards,
    J.Nelson

As its Business broadband, then you cannot add BT Vision to it anyway. As its part of the family business, then it would have to stay as a business line.
You would be better getting your own Residential Broadband line installed
If you just want a stronger signal, then you can buy things to boost the wireless signal.

  • Help with Ethernet broadband please

Forgive me for asking what are probably simple questions - but I am having trouble with Ethernet broadband and I cant find answers anywhere ( including from my ISP ) . Thanks in advance for any help here !
I have a blue and white 700 MHZ g3 imac running OSX 10.2.8 and OS 9.2 . I recently had Ethernet broadband hooked up - it connects to the net for a couple minutes , then wont receive for hours, then works for an hour, then not, etc. The ISP says that the D-Link router they installed is getting a continously strong signal - that they cant see anything wrong from thier end . The guys who installed the receiver thing-ey on the outside of my house also configured the Ethernet setup . Should I re-set up all that ? What do I need to know from the ISP to do that ? Do I have to boot up in OS9 and set up the Ethernet there also ?
I dont have an Airport card but that shoul;dnt matter right ? I only have the one computer .

Please post in the CRT iMac discussions. Thank you.

  • Message for TISCALI broadband users!

Have posted this somewhere else, but thought it needed a direct thread.
I've been experiencing some technical hiccups with itunes and downloading generally. So I emailed Tiscali with my concerns. Tiscali seem to be aware of the problemo and are trying to correct it.
Here is what they had to say to me...
Regarding your concern, I understand that you are unable to download music from itunes website. You have tried disabling Anti-virus and firewall, however, the issue persists.
Many of our customers are experiencing this issue. We have forward this issue to our network Team who are already investigating on it. I assure you that it will be resolved very soon.
    Hope this helps.

‘Thanks to reports from our customers regarding some difficulties in downloading ‘iTunes’ we have identified a problem with our network configuration which we believe is causing the issue, we are in the process of developing a resolution which, we hope will ready to implement in the early stages on next week (commencing 5th June). We appreciate your patience and aplogise for the difficulties you may have experienced whilst we have worked to resolve this concern.’

If you don't want to do a fresh install, just do a Repair Install:
follow carefully what's below it may well be flaky a clean install is preferable

If you don't want to do a fresh install, just do a Repair Install:
Boot to the Windows CD. Do not press F2 or anything else, just wait until it gets to the point where it is asking if you want to "set up Windows XP now, Press Enter" or "Repair a Windows XP Installation Using Recovery Console".
Do NOT choose Recovery Console. Instead, choose to Set up Windows XP now.
On the next screen, it will ask you to choose "R" to repair the current Windows XP installation. **Do NOT press escape because that will install XP clean**. Instead, choose R to repair the current XP installation.
Follow the prompts to repair your XP installation.
    Warnings:
    1) A Repair Install usually has worked pretty nicely for me in the past. However, everything has risks. These risks are YOURS not anyone elses
    2) The repair USUALLY works nicely and will leave all your settings, data, and programs intact, but you will have to reinstall all Windows Critical Updates and Service Packs after you do the repair. Because of this, disconnect your internet connection (unless you have a hardware firewall) until after the Repair is complete and you activate your software firewall. At that point, reinstall all critical Windows Updates and Service Packs.
    3) I'm telling you to disconnect your internet connection because otherwise you will get a virus between the time when the repair is done and you finish installing critical updates, if you don't have a firewall running.
    4) Backup your drive before doing anything I've mentioned above. Don't blame us if you lose all your stuff!!!
Now, if you need better instructions, refer to Microsoft's own instructions for repairing your installation:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341
Read everything there closely. You probably want to do Method 2, but don't skip down to there until you read everything else first.

  • Please help - extremely slow broadband/ technical ...

    Hi there,
for approx 2 weeks now there has been a change in our broadband connection. We have always experienced an acceptable broadband speed, but something suddenly changed recently and has left our broadband incredibly slow.
I noticed there was a BT openworld van in our street approx two weeks ago who seemed to be there for the whole day working on the telephone pole. Since he left that afternoon we have had terrible problems with our connection.
We are no longer able to do simple things such as stream videos, download anything or even open multiple tabs when browsing - its just too slow!
I did try a speed test linked from these forums which showed that the IP profile for my line is 135kbps, download speed achieved was 116kbps and "an upstream test was not conducted on this line due to a technical issue"
I'll be totally honest and say this all means nothing to me - I just want my broadband restored to its former self and actually be able to use it properly!
    HELP!

I run the initial speedtest using my ethernet cable - those hub readings were wifi connection.

  • Multiple iPhoto Libraries - HELP or my wife may kill me!!!

    Greetings,
I read Old Toads article on switching Libraries and I thought I would try it out. I copied the current library to an exteral drive (Apple + D) so I would have a safe copy.
Then I made another copy of that so I would have my current library, a back up library and the library I was going to work on.
The libraries all had a size of approx 68GB. So, I cut the test library down to photos from 2008 (still over 6000 photos) and closed iphoto.
When I opened it back up using the (apple key to select the original library from my main drive, it loads only the 6000 pictures from 2008. Where did the rest of the images go? Any of the libraries I open now only show the photos from 2008.
The library sizes on my external drive all say 68GB but the library on my main drive only shows as 30GB.
So, I think the photos are all still there but I can't find them...
PLEASE Help or I am a dead man!!!

I read Old Toads article on switching Libraries and I thought I would try it out. I copied the current library to an exteral drive (Apple + D) so I would have a safe copy.
Command (apple) D duplicates a file (or folder) - it does not move it - how did you move the copy to teh external drive?
Then I made another copy of that so I would have my current library, a back up library and the library I was going to work on.
The libraries all had a size of approx 68GB. So, I cut the test library down to photos from 2008 (still over 6000 photos) and closed iphoto.
I'm assuming that you did this using iPhoto - is that correct?
When I opened it back up using the (apple key to select the original library from my main drive, it loads only the 6000 pictures from 2008. Where did the rest of the images go? Any of the libraries I open now only show the photos from 2008.
You do not switch libraries by using the command (Apple) key - you switch by depressing the option key while launching iPhoto - is this what you did to switch libraries?
I'm thinking that you may just be opening the cut down library over and over and not switching to the back up libraries
The library sizes on my external drive all say 68GB but the library on my main drive only shows as 30GB.
So, I think the photos are all still there but I can't find them...
PLEASE Help or I am a dead man!!!
Depress the option (alt) key and launch iPhoto and try each of the three libraries that you see as options in the select libraries function

  • Please Help--10.4.6 is killing my Mac Mini

Please help. I am new to Mac.
I have a Mac Mini G4. I installed through Software Update 10.4.6. Partway through through the installation process, the system said there was an error, that the package was moved to the trash and that I should try re-installing. So, I did. And the same thing happened again. I tried re-booting the computer. In "About This Mac" it says that I have 10.4.6. But now, everything is messed up. I can't mount any disk images on the desktop (I checked, and .dmg files are associated with the right application). I can't even install any software. Someone had posted an ftp that had 10.4.6 as a .sit file rather than a .dmg. However, when I downloaded it and tried to run the installation package, partway through, it stopped saying, "There were errors during installation. Please try installing again later." I tried to "Archive and Install" from the Tiger DVD (10.4.0), and, early on in the installation, it gave me the same "error" message. I tried to repair disk permission (I hadn't done than before downloading the update), but it just hangs there (how long is it supposed to take anyway). Moreover, Mail won't launch and while Safari launches, it crashes. Firefox works. Please, please help me. I don't understand what's going on.
    Mac Mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thank God, everything is OK, again.
I posted my question on two forums, “Using Mac OS X Tiger” and “Installation & Setup” because I wasn’t sure which one to go to, and received useful information from everyone involved.
I want to profusely thank everyone who helped, not least Dr. Smoke and his extremely useful Web site: www.thexlab.com
    Here’s what I did:
First, I tried to Repair Disk from the Tiger install DVD. The repair failed, gave me the following error:
    “Invalid volume free block count
should be 15966423 instead of 15966422
Error: underlying task reported failure on exist
    1HFS Volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on Volume 1
    Could not be repaired”
In looking through Dr. Smoke’s site, I saw that it said that third party applications like Disk Warrior might be able to help. It reminded me that my friend made me get that program when he sold me his Mini (sorry I didn’t mention it earlier). I booted from the Disk Warrior CD and told it to repair the disk. And guess what: it actually worked!
While I still had the same problems: could not mount disk images, etc. I was at least able to do an Archive Install of 10.4 (I followed all the specific instructions as outlined). And that worked, too. Now, everything is working again!
I updated to 10.4.5 (I figured that was the last one working OK, so go with what works. I am sure 10.4.6 is fine, but as the xlab Web site notes, “Before installing software updates, you should decide if "now" is the right time.” And, frankly, after what I have been through, “now” is certainly not the right time.
One last question: all the applications seem to be working just fine. How do I delete the “Previous Systems” folder? Where is it located? Is the procedure the same as the one outlined in this document, “Mac OS X 10.2: How to Delete a Previous Systems Folder” (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25461) or is it different for 10.4?
Again, thank you so very, very much for your help. I really appreciated it.
    Best,
    Amir

  • Req. Help: iOS 8.1 upgrade killed sending email

Has anyone else encountered a situation where, after going from 8.0.2 > 8.1 you continued to receive mail, but were unable to send it?
    [Gory Details]
Took the upgrade last night as there hadn't been an overwhelming number of horror stories making the rounds.  Did so after turning off all other applications, etc..
All seemed after the restart so I went to bed.  This morning I grab the phone and began my day.  Part of my duties include documenting, by photo, items after they arrive in a warehouse and emailing them to interested parties.
Imagine my surprise when I later called and asked if they'd gotten my emails to hear "Huh?" as the response.  This, after sending a picture of my (cliche alert) cat, to a friend who runs a rescue organization last night and getting an instant reply (it *was* funny).
So I looked and sure enough, they were all hanging in my outbox.
I tried resending, no good (this is an Exchange server account).  On a whim I tried my other account, which is IMAP/SMTP, with a fresh test mail.  Didn't send there either.
    So I then:
I restarted my phone, no improvement.
I tried a trick from an old iOS 4.3 thread and turned the SMTP server off and on (it HUNG on Verifying for *for*EVER*) and resent from that account.  It went.  w00t!
I changed one of the work emails to my home email settings and resent.  BOOM! Off it went.
However, there's no option to turn off anything in an Exchange account and I can't be sending work emails through my home account.
Other than deleting work account and reentering everything again, would anyone have a cure?
I'm on a 64Gb, Verizon, iPhone 6 Plus and would appreciate any help you can give.

If emails are stuck in your outbox, then delete the account and re add it.
Or talk to your IT dept since your having issues with your work email account.

  • Newbie here, seeking help re. Broadband usage.

I'm only 11 days into Dec and the monitor tells me I've used 30gb of my 40gb allowance!
Does BT provide itemised daily analysis of my BB usage as I'd like to see where I'm using this?  The monitor on the BT website just seems to give the cumulative figs.
I have been watching a lot of Lovefilm [films and tv episodes] on my tablet via wireless connection.  Could this be the reason for my high usage?  If so, approx. what usage count would a 120min film normally have please?
    Thanks

Watching TV series and movies will encounter high bandwidth especially if you're watching HD videos. If you intend to keep watching series or movies in the future I would suggest upgrading to an unlimited usage package as £5 for 5Gb is rather expensive in my eyes.
You can monitor your usage if you download a netowrk monitor tool, though this will not tell you where you used it. There are probably ones which do but you will more than likely have to pay a subscription or a one time fee to use the program.
