Help with iPod 3G... firmware won't boot anymore... please help!

I own an iPod 3G since August 2003.
It always worked well...
but a few days ago I went to turn it on (after not having turned it on for 3 weeks) and it booted, because the Apple logo appears, but it just won't go in!
So I get the Apple logo all the time, until the battery's flat!
After the battery got flat, I tried recharging, but all it does is run the Apple logo again (but I'm pretty sure it does recharge, even though the bar doesnt appear).
I can still put the iPod on Diagnostic Mode... that still works, but not the actual iPod firmware.
I've tried connecting it to the computer too, but nothing happens, Windows says that the USB device wasn't detected.
Please help me!
ps: i did an HDD Scan and after about 5 minutes it said HDD Pass (or something like that)
i did a USB disk scan and it kept scanning and after 30 minutes nothing changed so I gave up (the ipod was really heating up)
windows just recognizes that there's a device connected, but doesnt recognize the device
What is wrong?

Hi: Try this link,,,,,
I can't get passed the Apple Logo

I have my post dont want to duplicate it

The problem doesn't lie with your feed, although it does contain an error - you have given a non-existent sub-category. You need to stick to the categories and sub-categories listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#categories
Subscribing to your feed from the iTunes Store page work as such, but the episodes throw up an error message. The problem lies with your episode media files: you are trying to stream them. Pasting the URL into a browser produces a download (where it should play the file) of a small file which does not play and in fact is a text file containing (in the case of ep.2) this:
    [Reference]
    Ref1=http://stream.riverratdoc.com/RiverratDoc/episode2.mp3?MSWMExt=.asf
    Ref2=http://70.33.177.247:80/RiverratDoc/episode2.mp3?MSWMExt=.asf
You must provide a direct link to the actual mp3 file. Streaming won't work. The test is that if you paste the URL of the media file (as given in the feed) into the address bar of a browser it should play the file.

  • 8800, battery symbol with red line through it. Won't boot. Please help!!!

I recently bought a 8800 and when I inserted a battery, all I got was a battery symbol with a red line through it on a dim screen.  I changed batteries, tried to charge it via USB and from a wall outlet to no avail.  I tried cleaning the contacts and tried uploading t a new  OS, but it wont recognize the phone being connected when it actually is.    I am at the end of my rope with this phone and can't figure out what else to do.  Is it just gone? Please help me
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Leave the device to charge 2-3 hours, and then, still connected to the USB cable, remove the the battery from the device a few seconds and reinsert it. If it boots--leave it to charge to 100% (check Options > Status for the percentage).
If it doesn't boot--try using a wall outlet charger if you are not. If you are connected via USB to the PC, make certain that you have Desktop Manager (or the USB device drivers) installed, which you can download below.

  • Satellite m300 won't boot! please help!

    Hi,
I've got a bit of an issue here.. I have a Satellite m300.. a white one..
and it won't boot... I've had this very issue before but it turned out to be an external USB HDD that stopped it from booting up but now even with everything removed it still won't boot.
And it was fine until yesterday, it just gave up.. I am away from home for work so I have all the work stuff and unfortunately without my recovery cd, but my guess is that it won't even read it..
    So this is what happens..
    turn on..
all light come on.. including power and all the white lights around the keypad..
and then maybe 5 sedconds later caplock and numlock(?) green lights flash..
then it's a dead still.. no HDD activities or sound.. just dead quite..
the screen remains black blank through out..
it seems to get stuck here before reaching the post screen.
i thought the power button usually took more than just a push to turn off? it instantly swithces off with a single push of the power button..
I think this laptop is like on sleep or something and can't seem to wak up.. maybe?
    And it has vista.
Please help.. I have some important work files I need to recover at least before formatting..
and that has to wait till I get home which won't be for a month or so..
which also lets me take it back for warranty as well..
    any help appreciated!!!
    cheers,
    Min

Disconnect all devices from motherboard : AGP/memory/drives/floppy/USB/PCI cards etc. take out the 20pin & 4pin PSU connectors and reset the motherboards

Assemble PSU connectors ,only one DIMM module and graphics card and turn it on and se if you get a post .
Just removed all components. I reset the CMOS. I then reconnected the 20pin and 4pin, 1 stick ram, and the video card (no ide devices, no mouse, keyboard cd drives) and the monitor doesn't show up. I also tried another monitor so it isn't the monitor.
Could it have a bad AGP port?
Any other suggestions? I am thouroughly stumped. Also the power and reset buttons don't work no matter what configuaration I put the front panel connectors in. The Power LED is lit up and it doesn't work and the reset light is off and it doesn't work.
Also noticed one of my fans connected to one of the two other fan pins on the motherboard isn't working.
    What a nightmare.

  • My iMac won't boot up please help

Please help me. My iMac just won't start up. Thank you

Does it try at al, or no sign of anything at all?
Can you boot from your Install Disc holding c key?
Does holding Option or alt key at bootup show any choices?
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

  • My iPod Touch 4 won't charge. Please help?

Ok so my iPod Touch ran out of battery and I went to go charge it and then it won't charge. I tried 3 different charger cords and different outlets and it won't charge and it just charged last night, what is wrong with it? Please help.

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Intel iMac won't boot up, please help.

Yesterday I downloaded the iPhone 2.1 Software Update, I then lost two thirds of my contacts, I managed to get them back using the Sync System, I then downloaded the Security Update, which failed "Due to an error" and was "put in the Trash". My computer then crashed, I restarted it and now it won't boot up, it gets as far as the White Screen with the Apple Logo on it with the Spinning Bars "loading" icon underneath, it was like that for over an hour last night and I've tried again this morning and it's the same. has my hard drive gone or is there some less (I hope) final reason for this? Is there an equivalent to Windoze safe mode or similar?
    Please help urgently.
    Thank You

Try this qst... Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
If that doesn't help, Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
If we still don't have it, try without a Tiger Disk, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • IMac G5 HD Won't Boot. Please Help.

I have an iMac G5 (Power PC) which has been running OS 10.5.8 without any issues until today.
When starting, I have a grey screen with the Apple logo, but the wheel beneath keeps turning and the computer will not boot up. I've tried to start it many times, and I just get the grey screen, etc.   P.S.  I do have a Time Capsule connected via Ethernet and Time Machine was active until this problem today.  The TC is disconnected at this point, as I was afraid I'd lose that back up.
    Here is what I tried:
I disconnected everything except the keyboard and mouse (not internet/modem/Time Capsule)
I booted from the Leopard Disk, and ran Disk Utility. Message said the the HD appears to be OK
I booted from Drive Genius and ran the following:
    1.  Repair-Verify:  Message was that HD appears OK
    2.  Repair-Repair:  Message was that HD appears OK
    3.  Repair-Rebuild:  Had a few invalid volumes.  Message was that the Volume Header and HD repaired successfully
    4.  Repair-Preferences;  SAID THERE IS A CORRUPT PREFERENCE:   /bin/sh:xargs:command not found (There was no way that I saw to fix this!)
    5.  Scan for Bad Blocks:  None found
I tried to start the computer again, but I still get the grey screen, Apple Logo, and constant spinning of the wheel WITHOUT a start.  It appears that the HD is not 'Dead' but has some issue, perhaps the corrupt preference listed.
So, I need help with my next step. Would any of the following work and if more than one, what order would be best?
    1.  Use the Leopard Install Disk to 'Restore from Time Machine Backup'?  (Never have done this, so I'm clueless)
    2.  Use the Leopard Install Disk and 'Archive and Install' the OS?  Can I do this since the HD has the updates to OS 10.5.8?
    3.  Use the Leopard Install Disk to Erase and Reinstall the OS and then migrate from the Time Capsule (Never have done this either)
    4.  AND, if none of this works, I'm assuming I could go get a new iMac and restore everything from the Time Capsule/Time Machine, even though there the OS in a new machine would be upgraded and also Intel Processor.  Yes?
In any case....PLEASE HELP if you can.....and THANKS

Thanks for trying to help with this :-).  I started as you suggested and here are the last few lines:

well if you've droped it before you've probably damaged the hardware. The only thing we can tell you is that you need to take it to apple and let them look at it.

  • I need some help with my java game using applets, CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP

    Hi,
I am in the process of creating a RPG program using Java. I am not very experienced with java, however the problem i am currently facing is something i can't seem to figure out. I would like to draw a simple grid where a character (indicated by a filled circle) moves around this grid collecting items (indicated by a red rectangle). When the character moves on top of the grid with the item, i would like it to disappear. Right now i am not worrying about the fact that the item will reappear after the character moves away again, because sometimes, when the character moves over the item, nothing happens/another item disappears. i have been at this for 4 days and still cannot figure out what is goign on. can somebody please help me? it would be most appreciated.
    Thanks
PS if i needed to send you my code, how do i do it?

    Thank you for replying.
The thing is, I am taking java as a course, and it is necessary for me to start off this way (this is for my summative evaluation). i agree with you on the fact, however, that i should go in small steps. i have been doing that until this point, and my frustration caused me to jump around randomly for an answer. I also think that it may just be a bug, but i have no clue as to how to fix it, as i need to show my teacher at least a part of what i was doing by sometime next week. Here is my code for anybody willing to go through it:

  • HT201210 help with iPod touch that won't restore

trying to restore a not-so-new iPod Touch that is frozen.  When I do this in iTunes I get an error message that says it can't restore because "device isn't eligible for the requested build".  Anything else I can do?

This device is not eligible for the requested build (Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194")
Update to the latest version of iTunes. Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) users may need to download iTunes 10.6.3.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

  • My macbook 2011 won't boot up please help!!!

    Hi there
I hope someone can help me. I have a macbook 2011 and the other week it wouldn't boot up. It went into t a screen with the apple logo and a progress bar appeared. I waited ages but got stuck. I did some research and thought I would buy a new hard drive which I then replaced, all seemed well as it was back to its old self but now the issue has come back. I cant access the hardware test and was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what I can do or how I can access this some other way. I am not sure what could be causing the problem. i am running the macbook on the latest OSX. Any help would be amazing!

It could be the drive cable, and it might have been the drive cable all along. The following article has a list of symptoms describing drive and drive related problems:
    Hard Drive Problems
If you could get an external drive with an OS installed on it you could boot from that and try and figure out what's going on. Be advised that Snow Leopard and earlier OSes may not recognize the internal drive's volume if it's Yosemite and they won't make sense of Core Storage because it didn't exist when they were released. Another option might be to boot off the install media if you have it and see what's up with the drive or if it's even visible.
The following articles about resets may help, but don't hold your breath:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
How to reset your Mac's NVRAM, PRAM, and SMC | Macworld
I rather doubt that will do it. If you have the install media I'd use it and see what's up before proceeding.

  • Help with ipod and computer shut downs...please.

I've posted this in two other forums to no avail -- lots of views, but no help.
My family now has 3 ipods (we only had 1 before) and yesterday I was trying to get them all set up - updates on the actual ipod, and I've updated itunes to 7.5. There are two issues here:
    1) I am not able to register ANY of the ipods. I get all the way through the process to the very end and then it gives me an error message (after clicking the "No thanks" at the bottom of the page that asks if you want to download the videos) saying that the service couldn't be found? Or something like that. Ok, fine...I can handle not being able to register them for the time being.
    2) I could keep itunes on all day long, as long as the Ipod is NOT CONNECTED. As soon as I connect the ipod (any of the 3 new ones - they all do the same thing) - ok, maybe not as soon as, but shortly thereafter - my entire computer shuts down. No error message, no blue screen of death, no warning - it just shuts down. It might be after I move a song from the "purchased" folder to the actual ipod. Or, as happened yesterday, it's right smack in the middle of a download (happened with both videos AND songs) and then of course, I have to try and purchase it again. I'm not even sure if it took my money already, but if it did, I'm SOL because I paid, but don't have the video/song since it never finished downloading.
I've done everything that's been recommended to me - I disabled all my start up programs (except the windows ones) and that didn't resolve anything.
    My system is as follows:
Windows XP Home Edition (all updated except for microsoft office 2003)
    Service Pack 2
    AMD Athalon 64 3000+
    1.81 GHz
    2GB RAM
Not sure what else you need to know, to try and help me resolve this. Thanks for your time.

  • Xserve DP G4 won't boot anymore. Help!

I'm getting to the end of my rope here.
I got a Xserve G4 (1st gen.) MacRack1,1 and last week, proceeded to check it out by installing the only OS I had on CDs, which is 10.3.
Installation went without a hitch, but not being able to install the latest Remote Desktop was a no go. So, I've got a unused copy of Leopard 10.5 Server from work. Tried to install it. Of course, at some point, the installer said I couldn't install because there wasn't enough memory. Duh! So, I did receive 3 512MB chips today and put them in. Then, I started booting into Open Firmware until I realized that I had to reset the PRAM. Tried to reset the PRAM both by holding Command-Option-P-R at startup and then, since it was not working, I tried from OF, using 'reset-nvram' and 'reset-all'. Each time, the machine would reboot right into OF again! If I would try to boot with 'mac-boot', it would start from the 10.3 CD (as it doesn't seem to know that there is a 180GB drive in it, which I don't think my attempt to install 10.5 did erase, but maybe I"m wrong). So, anyway, it would start booting with the Apple logo on the gray screen and the circular progress indicator. It would take a long time and then, the Apple logo would be replaced by a "prohibited" sign. The progress indicator would still spin so initially, I let it go but after 10 minutes and still nothing, I thought something was wrong.
So, thinking that maybe the memory I put in it was bad, I removed the 3 sticks I had just put in. Again, tried to reset the PRAM from OF, still no go. It will constantly boot into Open Firmware.
Then, I thought ok, maybe the lithium battery that powers the PRAM is dead. Pulled it out and checked it with my electronic multimeter and the reading was 3.665V.
I also tried to boot into target disk mode and connect to my MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro would see an Apple firewire device but no drive would mount. Disk Utility would not show any drive. I have 2 180GB drive that are mirrored, btw.
So, what the f... is wrong with this machine? I'm just about to throw it in the trash bin!
Anybody knows what I should try?
    Thanks in advance!
    -desperate in CA

Lots of elements there - hard to know where to start…
FWIW I've never, ever reset the PRAM on any of my XServes - even after upgrading memory. It's just never been necessary so I'm going to ignore all the stuff about PRAM and OF since I think it's a red herring.
... installing the only OS I had on CDs, which is 10.3.
Is this 10.3 Server or just client? If it's client, is it from a retail box or a set of disks bundled with a specific machine (most bundled disks only boot the specific model they're bundled with).
Server, BTW, comes with the Remote Desktop agent pre-installed. The Server OS also supports remote installation.
The MacBook Pro would see an Apple firewire device but no drive would mount
It sounds to me like the boot volume is host - possibly from the failed 10.5 install. At this point I think your best option is to go back to the bootable CD you have (10.3) and restart from there - at least as far as booting the system to where you can reformat the disks to a known state.
