HFM or Essbase for consolidation?

We are having a spirited debate on our project team about data flow and whether we need HFM or just use Essbase for simple consolidation and reporting along with Planning.
First - here is a quick backstory. We have used essbase for very simple corporate consolidation at a very high level. We have 4 companies we are consolidating with different charts of accounts and GL systems. We are now developing a Hyperion Planning application that pulls in detailed actual information at the trial balance level and want to rework our consolidation application to do the same to be consistent. One of our companies has multiple currencies we will need to convert eventually (they have a stand alone Hyperion app now).
The main question is what functionality would we gain by developing an HFM application to complement our planning app and using a single ASO cube on top of them for reporting versus just using Essbase and Planning?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Aside from the simple fact that it's a better product (just teasing), there are a few key factors in the decision whether to use HFM rather than Essbase for consolidations. Ask whether you need:
1) Journal Entries, including all of the audit trail associated with them.
2) Very flexible currency translation.
3) Consolidation rules including intercompany eliminations. I understand Essbase can be made to do this, but I also believe it is non-trivial to set up and maintain.
4) Complex consolidation logic including Organization By Period.
5) Process Management.
6) Data and Task Audit
I'm sure there are man more differences, but the above represent the most commonly discussed differences. If you don't need any of the above, and you already own Essbase and have in-house expertise to manage the system, then Essbase may be the right choice for you.

  • OBIEE report with HFM and Essbase Data source

    Hi All,
Just want your though can we get the data from HFM and Essbase data source in a single report i.e. for some account i want to show budget data from HFM and Forecast data from essbase in a single OBIEE report? If yes how can we model both Data source in rpd?

It possible but the challenge is to try to align the account hierarchy and the entity hierarchy between Essbase and HFM. HFM is looking the data at a top side consolidation level where planning will have more granular details to forecast correctly. The best solution is either to build a custom table in to import both sources, or to use HFM data into Essbase, or to use EPMA. The best in class solution stays to align hierarchies and metadata across applications. We implemented BI Financials Dashboard for the General Ledger, built a custom Dashboard connected in Real Time to Planning and are installing OFMA to connect HFM. Once done, you can rationalize metadata if not done before and start to link the different data into single reports. You will also have to ensure the data is refreshed at the same time to avoid inconsistency.

  • EAL Security in HFM or Essbase?

Does anyone know what the best way of managing EAL security for an HFM to Essbase via EAL data flow? Is the end user security best managed in HFM or in Essbase (assuming that is the way it works for an EAL cube)? Does the security need to be managed in both HFM and Essbase or can it just be managed in the Essbase filters?
Any help on the best way to provision and manage user security for an EAL solution would be greatly appreciated.

EAL creates an essbase cube and does not push down any security from HFM, so it will be a combination of provisoning users/group to the essbase cube through through HSS and then essbase filters for security on the members.

    Hi,
I need to create a report for consolidation purpose.
The report should contain the same information as the FBL3N sum for several GL accounts for all company codes, one line per account and for eaxh company code one row.
I would like to use the report painter to create such a report, but I do not know the correct library for that.
Or does anybody know a better way to create such a report?

I've seen this issue several times.
Run FR independently and see if you are still able to connect.
First make sure essbase is running. Try sample connection using maxl.
    Check if ports are open.

  • Payments for Consolidated billing

how receipts are applied to the Consolidated billing number?
    Thanks,
    Prudhvi.
    www.erpschools.com

    Hi
Hope you know the set up for Consolidation Billing. If you enable the Show Billing Number check box in system options form in AR, then while creating Sales Invoices you will find the Transaction number field split into two. One for Consolidated Billing and the other field for Transaction Number.
When you create a Receipt and apply to an Invoice also, you will find the same two fields for Transaction number. You can choose the Consolidated billing number and the Transaction Number to whcih you want to apply the receipt
    Hope this helps

  • Process Chain for Consolidation Functions

    Hi Team,
We have created a process chain for consolidation function as required by client, but we want the process chain to check the preceding  task status and only on successfully completion it should  proceed to next task. Is there a standard program or function module which does this, please update.
Also we would like to pass dynamic permanent parameter values for the variants of task.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Collet,
We have created a process chain  as  below:
Period Initialization - Data Collection -LDS - Calculation of RE - Validation of RFD - Interunit Elimination -COI.
I have created the Separate variants for  each of the above functions with program UCBATCH01.and the process chain is working fine.
But we want the process chain to check the task status before it proceed to next task execution and stop if any error occurs in the task. Also we want the  dynamic selection of parameters from Permanent Parameters of Consolidation Monitor.

  • Fiscal year for consolidation

    Hi All,
Anyone knows how to maintain the fiscal year for consolidation ?
I'm trying to post some transaction and I hit this error message
"No postable ledger/FY variant found for cons unit ICFNBT (dim FN)"
    Thanks,
    Melissa

    Hi,
Refer the fallowing SAP notes regarding your.
    981570 , 793716.
    Reason and Prerequisites:
As of Release ECC 6.0 (mySAP ERP 2005), the new "Realtime update: Ledger selection" standard function replaces the modification solution from Note 793716 for older releases.
This problem is caused by a program error.
    Solution:
    Implement the program corrections.

  • SEM-BCS Preparation for Consolidation Group Changes

    Hi All,
Is the task "Preparation for Consolidation Group Changes" only implemented when Consolidation of Investments has also been implemented?
Does "Preparation for Consolidation Group Changes" have any value on its own?
Any comments, replies or suggestions most welcome.

    Hi,
I think that prep for cons group changes is independent (but supplementary to) from CoI.
See what is said in help:
"When in the middle of a fiscal year a consolidation unit is either acquired by a consolidation group (acquisition), divested from a consolidation group (divestiture), or <b>changes its accounting technique</b> (method change), the following data must be adjusted:
    - Reported financial data
    - Standardized financial data
    - Consolidated data with posting level 20"
As you can see, not only consolidated data are to be changed, but also Standardized and Reported.
Moreover, as is seen above, changes of accounting technique will also trigger such activities.
    So, my answers:
    1. No
    2. Yes.
    Best regards,
    Eugene

  • Carrying forward accounts with value as '0' (zero) for consolidation

    Hi,
I have a query regarding carrying forward accounts with value as '0' (zero) for consolidation. Actually when there is any account having zero value then on calculating contribution the value is carried only to Parent Currency Total dimension. After proportion level the value for that account becomes null. Can anyone suggest if there is a way where i can carry the value 'zero' till value dimension "Contribution Total".
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
couldn't you do a rule that copies from PCT to proportion level ( either this level or one above that lets you have rule input)

  • EDI for Consolidated Invoice

    Hi All,
We have a requirement to send EDI to customer who are on Consolidated Invoice. I have used standard SAP Idoc Type INVOIC02 with message type INVOIC. I used the Output type RD01 and then created a Consolidated Invoice. The problem is the segments that are populated for this IDOC type doesn't have the reference Invoices. Does anyone of you have an idea on what is the standard IDOC type that i can use for EDI for Consolidated Invoice. I will appreciate if someone can help me in this. I treid reading various threads and the experts here are mentioning about EDI 811.
Can anyone of you help me in this regard.
    Thanks
    Ashit Taneja

    Hi,
Can you throw some more light on what is the IDOC type that i need to use for that. I can understand you are saying that 811 is for Consolidated Invoice, but i need some more clarity on the IDOC type, the message type and the segments which are populated. I tried using the IDOC type INVOIC, but the segments that are populated has only the Consolidated Invoice number and doesn't have the referenced Invoices.

  • Preparation for Consolidation in SEM-BCS.

    Hello All,
I’m implementing SEM - BCS (BW-based). I have the following versions:
    - R/3: SAP ECC 6.0
    - BW: 7.0
    - SEM: 6.0
What do I have to customize in R/3 in order to extract the correct data to BW?
Do I have to do all the customization in transaction SPRO (Enterprise Controlling -> Integration: Preparation for Consolidation)?
I know that I have to create the companies and assign them to the company codes. I also have to create group chart of accounts and assign it to the transactional chart of accounts.
Can I do this in the account master data or do I have to have a Financial Statement Version for the Group?
Is it necessary to maintain Transaction Types for Consolidation?
Do I have to customize the Consolidation Staging Ledger and extract the data from here to BW?
I think I have to customize all this, but because all this transactions are in EC-CS customizing and I want to implement SEM - BCS (in BW), I’m not sure if this is the right path.
    Can anyone help me?
    Regards,
    Helena

    GANSHA,
what you are telling me is:
    - I don´t have to do the customization in ECC. The only thing I have to do is, identify the tables and extract the data I need to BW.
But this way, how does the system know, which postings are from group companies or not?
The company code in R/3 is equivalent to company (consolidation unit role) in BCS. The Group companies are created in BCS and the companies in BCS are under those group companies.
If I were you, I would check whether Fiscal Year Variant is same across all company codes in R/3. I would also check whether parallel currencies are activated or not. Non-activation of parallel currency is not issue, but I will try to understand what are all the currencies involved and the currency translation flow.
I have created the companies in ECC in order to fill the "Trading Partner" field in the master data ( vendor, customer and G/L accounts) and to use on FI postings.
Yes, you have taken the right steps.
I have created the transaction types in ECC in order to use them on FI postings.
None of this is necessary? I don’t have all the company codes in SAP, some of the data will be uploaded to BW by file.
The transaction types in ECC are different from the transaction types (also known as Movement Types) in BCS. You will continue to maintain the FI transaction types.
Regarding the chart of accounts, I don’t have a group chart of accounts. For what I understand there’s two ways:
    - creating a group chart of accounts in ECC and in BW will be available as part of the GL account master data
    or
    - creating Financial statement items for consolidation in ECC, Build a Financial Statement Version for the Group (linking the operational chart of accounts to the consolidation items).
I think, this is the only way for me to use the consolidation staging ledger (totals table GLT3)? Or am I wrong?
What you are telling me is that I don’t have to do this in ECC, but in BCS customizing?
I’m confused ... please help me!!!
    Helena
In your ECC, whether GLT3 table is activated? In many clients' companies, GLT3 table is not activated. The GL totals data is available in BSEG table.
If you do not have Group COA/ Group GL accounts maintained now, there are many ways to get GL totals data with Group GL level info added. You have already mentioned the steps.
One more method is create a custom mapping table of Operational GL accounts with Group GL accounts outside R/3 (to be maintained as part of BW) and make your R/3 GL totals data to flow thru this table, so that the final data in BW is available in both operational GL accounts and Group GL accounts. Developers will be able to help you.

  • Partner Segment as part of New GL function for consolidation purpose

    Dear SAP colleagues,
I have the following questions around Partner Segment as part of the New GL function:
    1. Has anybody added partner segment (Field PSEGMENT) to the Coding Block as part of the New GL function yet?
    2. Can we display or add partner segments on all relevant postings?
    3. What other alternatives exist for consolidation in BCS lower than company code?
    4. Who has some documentation around why partner segments should be added to the coding block?
    5. Who has business requirements for adding partner segments and documentation?
In advance thank you very for any help that can be provided.

Hi Partner segment s required if you prepare consolidation for segments. This field can help the consolidation system to identify inter segment transactions for profit elimination. Trading partner field is used to identify Intercompany Postings and it will help legal entity consolidation.

  • Diff between valid for consolidation and aggregation property in ODI column

    Hi John,
I have a query regarding the columns when we revers the dimensions in ODI. In the columns tab of each dimension, there is valid for consolidation column. What does this column to when we select it. Coz any how i will be using the aggregation for plan type where i will be giving the consolidation operator. Could you please let me know the differences between them
And also there is one more column Operation. What does this do

    Hi,
You can ignore the "valid for consolidation column" as far as I am aware it is not used.
Operation is for different types of load, these are
Update (default)–Adds, updates, or moves the member being loaded.
Delete Level 0–Deletes the member being loaded if it has no children.
Delete Idescendants–Deletes the member being loaded and all of its descendants.
Delete Descendants–Deletes the descendants of the member being loaded, but does
    not delete the member itself.

  • FI-GL Activating for Consolidation SEM BCS

    Hello together,
can somebody tell me in a few steps how to activate the FI-GL (0FI_GL_6) that it can be used for consolidation in SEM BCS. My problem is that FI_GL_6 (and also FIGL_C10 for new FI-GL) have not all required fields for consolidation in SEM BCS, especially movement type is missing.
I know how to use the BCS data collection functionality "load of data stream" and I also know how to activate the BI Content for FI (and how to connect the data basis from BCS with the "FI Cube" via source data basis).
But how can I prepare the FI Cube (DataSource, InfoSource) that it concludes all neccessary informations?
I need following InfoObjects in the BI Content: how to?
these InfoObjects are not containend in the standard FI-GL Business Content...or do you know other possibilities for getting FI-GL data in BW and ready for consolidation in BCS?

    Hi MP M,
Hi Install all the components related to that flow.I mean Datasource,Transfer rules,Infosource,Update rules,Cube. Then nothing is missing in this flow which are in BI Content.
For the Info objects not in the flow
Search them individually from the BI Content and Install them.Later you map them respective fields in the transfer rules manually. Then maintain update rules to them.
