Today I got an early 2009 iMac from a family member, I would like to restore it back to its factory settings as if I was setting up a brand new computer. He does not have the discs that were originally with the iMac when he first purchased it. It is currently running on Mavericks OSX. Is it possible for me to restore this computer back to factory settings without the discs?

if you have a Mac or a PC with iTunes installed you may be able to do this. If your screen is broken but your iPhone still reacts to touch you have to just turn it off, and if your iPhone doesn't respond to touch, you have to hold both home and power buttons for about 7 seconds (it might not work from the first try) so that it shuts down. Afterwards get your lightning to USB cable connected to the computer but not to the phone. You hold your phone's home button and while holding it, you connect it to the cable, iTunes should say something like "iTunes detected iPhone in recovery mode"and a window with a restore button should pop up. You click on the restore button and iTunes will walk you through the process afterwards. If the iPhone has Find my iPhone feature activated you will have to enter your Apple ID password at the activation process after the iPhone is restored.

i just did this right now and my system so so fresh and pure.

After I enter my password in my Mac mini, my screen turns black. I know it is there, ( i can hear the assistant), but I cannot see anything. i went to Genius and they said hold Control, Option, P, R on the re-boot to get back to factory settings...

I went to the Genius bar and they told me to Control, Option, P, R on a reboot to restore the settings, but with a wireless KeyBoard it does not work. I installed my standard PC keyboard, but am not sure what keys renase the display back to factory settings.

Command and S.
Type in:
/sbin/fsck -fy

but it doesn't reboot it. HELP!

You can't; that procedure will cause it to rerun the Setup Assistant, but it isn't an actual factory reset. If you want to use it anyway, use 'shutdown -h now' as the final command.
The computer shouldn't be sold without its original disks.

What OS did the Mac come pre-installed with, or have you upgraded it to Lion or Mountain Lion? You should be able to re-install using Internet Recovery, if you were on either of those OS's.
Restart holding down Command + Alt (Option) + r
You'll probably prompted for your Apple ID and you'll need to have the Mac connected to the internet - ideally via ethernet cable, although wifi should be OK if you have a reliable connection.

While trying to back up my iPhone i keep getting the error message that it cannot read the contents of my phone... It then directs me to restore it back to factory settings. Anyone know why this is happening?

I've used this same iTunes account multiple times to back up phones and restore them when I've gotten new devices. I have restored this device as well once before, but i want it as up to date as possible becuase I am getting the iPhone 6 tomorrow. I've run a diagnostics test and under the connectivity test its saying there is no iPhone found, as well as under the sync test. I've gone through all the steps and what the possible problem could be (un-installing and re-installing, making sure all the software is active and up to date on my computer and making sure everything is installed correctly and running properly) and I'm still getting the same error message. I'm out of options and idea. Please help!

How can I restore a phone to factory settings without a menu or "Options"

My daughters phone. 1 year old. She can text and rec texts. Call and receive calls. Alarm clock works. When she hits menu it is blank. She has no Applications. Also the hour glass spins for a minute or two before it turns on. We went to ATT store and they suggested restoring the phone. THat isn't an option becuase she doesn't have the "OPTIONS BUTTON" available to her.
She called tech support thru ATT and they were not able to make any suggestions. ANy ideas.
And NO she did not ever back up her phone to her computer.

Have you done a battery-pop reboot? It can clear some things up. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation.
After that, you can decide if you want to to a Wipe...but one step at a time.
