Hi, I'm a bit worried about safety now. I just sold an old Apple G4 laptop to a random guy because it was completely broken.
It won't start up.
Now I'm scared that that person can manage to reboot the laptop and steal all my personal information. Is that likely/ possible? I looked at what sort of information is stored in one of my user accounts, and it's mainly applications - so my name, birthday and address and phone numbers are shown in some of the documents.
What can I do?
He said he wants to send this laptop to Bosnia where they repair it and resell it.
If the hard drive still inside, yes it is possible.
I would hope you can contact the person somehow. But you can always apply a "credit freeze" to all 3 credit reporting agencies where even you cannot add to your credit profile without lifting the freeze.
Maybe others will have more to offer.

oother laptops have 500gb or 250gb or 1tb so I was a bit worried about the macbook storage and if it will be enough?
The MacBook Air has an SSD, not a mechanical hard drive and since SSDs are more expensive drive sizes tend to be smaller. When I first installed an SSD in my previous notebook I went from having a 750GB mechanical drive to a 256GB SSD. That forced me to rethink how I used the drive since I was using about 600GB of that hard drive. I moved all my music, video, and photos to an external drive since I really didn’t need to keep all that stuff on my notebook which reduced my usage down to well below 300GB. I then began taking a look at the programs, utilities, templates, etc to see what I’d pack ratted away ‘just in case’. Removing most of that stuff took me down to just above 200GB.
The 13” MBA has an SD RAM slot and there are several different products that let you put a card in that doesn’t stick out like a normal SD card would. I have a 64GB card that I keep a selection of music, video, and photos. There are also mini USB cards that have just a little nob sticking out when inserted into the computer that can provide additional space.
Only you can determine if the trade-off for hard drive speed vs lost space (and longer battery life) is worth it. -
I was in the middle of the iOS 8 update and tried to turn my phone off (yes, I realize this was dumb) But what happened was it tried to reset. Now, my iphone 4s has the connect to itunes screen. I have tried to reset, recover, etc but I keep getting and error -51 message. Any ideas how I can get my phone working again? I am not worried about saving any info just having a phone to use!
Try a Hard Reset.....
Press and hold the Wake / Sleep button AND the Home button at the same time, keep them both pressed until the Apple Logo appears on the screen, it can take 10 or more seconds. Ignore the swipe to turn off message. -
Something to worry about or is it just router 'white noise'?
I don't think this is Arch specific, but felt the Newbie Corner would be an appropriate place to make this thread. I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question, but I seem to get a lot of blocked UDP packets from various IP's directed at port 55881 in particular. Occasionally, I'll also get attempted TCP connection requests to port 23, 445, and some ports in the 8000's. If this is something to worry about, what can I do to configure my system so that I can be at ease (or close enough)?
illusory wrote:My logs on my system check out well. The connection attempts I mentioned are all from my router's log. How can I check to make sure there isn't anything running listening in on those ports? What can I do to disable these services if necessary?
As a device, which faces internet, I guess it's normal for the router to detect some connection attempts either by mistake, or from port scanners, kids, etc...
The services run on your machines, not on the router. The only one on the router should be either telnet or httpd for configuration. In order to protect your internal network, you only need to disable remote adminitstration on the router (or whatever it is called in your case, that is the router should be accessible for administration only from the LAN) and port forwarding (also on the router, so that requests are not forwarded to the LAN). Got a new I phone moved all data of old one phone want to sell my old phone but if I delete data of old phone will it go off my new phone
Don't manually delete stuff off your old phone, just reset everything on it.

This was from October 21. This morning I got the same screen (MBP was on all night) but it was more 'graphic'. More little squares. What's going on?

Just created a new Apple ID. Now I'm worried about my credit card info from my old ID
Hello,
Not really sure where to ask this and I've been on the phone with apple all day so I don't want to call again haha. I recently had to change Apple IDs because I lost my password and recovery key (2 step verification) My question is will auto renewal subscriptions tied to that old account continue to take place or is that account (and the credit card number tied to it) effectively dead? I'm really not comfortable at all with the idea that my old ID could still be withdrawing from my bank account without my authorization.
Thanks,

Worrying about iMac with Logic Pro. (i mean big fan noise)
hi.
i am thinking about buying a new iMac with Apogee Ensemble. but i am a bit worried about the fan noise from imac when i use lots of plug-ins and etc.
well... the best way is to buy a Mac Pro and stash the machine in a machine room or a cabinet or something. but the budget is low here.
does anyone have any good ideas? do i have to take the fan noises? or is it really so powerful so that makes no such big fan noises?

I have no doubt that you and I haven't been reading the same posts, but I was under the impression that most people were much more infuriated that there was no announcement or run up to the launch (and thus they bought L9 just before).
Actually, we have been reading the same posts! Apple, historically, have never (and I do mean NEVER) pre-announce releases of Logic Pro. They are always announced on release day, even going back to before the Mac App Store, when boxed versions were still available. Apple do have quite a generous refund policy, so I suggest that anyone who feels cheated could always 'report an issue' via the link in the receipt email and try and obtain a refund. Personally, I would never buy a current version of Logic Pro until July was over, but as I've been using it for over 11 years now (before Apple bought Emagic), I guess I'm very familiar with the release times.
So why not keep support for EXSManager/Keymap, or at least a download link for paying customers. There is no other program that can do what it did unless you want to go back to an old version of Logic and utilise functionality that they removed yet is still relevant today.
Redmatica wouldn't have been allowed (under the terms and conditions of the buyout), to keep making the EXSManager, it would have been illegal as it's now an Apple product. That's like saying why didn't Emagic keep making a version of Logic for the PC after Apple bought them, because they obviously weren't allowed under the terms and conditions because it became an Apple product. While I can understand your frustration, you also have to understand the legalities that take place during takeovers and buyouts, as it's really not as simple as it may at first appear. -
Hi Three times in two days now i have received an email explaining how i can reset my apple ID passwword etc. Ive had this email before but only once and ignored as we are advised . Three times in two days though, bit worried, any ideas??
Is it just letting you know how to reset you password or saying it's trying to be reset?
If it's just letting you know how to I wouldn't worry, but if it says it's trying to then call apple and you'll have to talk to account security. -
What do I need to worry about when running a VI for an extended amount of time?
Hi, I'm fairly new to LabVIEW as a program, but not new to programming as a whole.
I'm attempting to build a VI which will, hopefully, be run continuously and take data for weeks-months at a time.
I've never built a VI, let alone a program, which will be run continuously for so long, and so I'm unsure as to what I should be concerned about. I'm looking right now at optimizing, as best I can, memory allocation, algorithms, etc. but I suppose my main question is: What should I really be worrying about when programming a VI which will be run continuously for an extended period of time?
Solved!
Go to Solution.In the structure of your VI's, be certain that you are not repetively creating things such as references to queues, or file references, or DAQ tasks, or anything without closing them. I was working on one application where a DAQ task was getting created every loop iteration and not being closed. It crashed the PC hard with a blue screen of death after about 20 minutes of operation, through debugging and before I found the cause, I saw I had about 80,000 to 100,000 iterations of a loop fairly consistently before the crash.
If this loop had run at a slower rate, it might have taken days or weeks before the PC would have crashed. It would have seemed infrequent and would have taken longer to debug because I would never have seent the pattern. If it takes a few failures before you discover the problem, it is a lot quicker to find the explanation after a few failures at 20 minutes per failure as opposed to 20 days per failure. The problem was eventually found in a subVI several layers down and fixed.
So if you pay attention to these things early enough, then hopefully they won't pop up and bite you weeks or months into a critical run of the program. -
Dump Analysis: High ITAB-name-numbers - s.th. to worry about?
Hi Folks,
I'm currently involved with a project implementing SAP CRM-Service and while analysing some dumps for error TSV_TNEW_OCCURS_NO_ROLL_MEMORY I noticed that the number of lines in the internal tables wasn't all that high but that the internally assigned numbers for the itab-names where a lot higher than anything I have seen so far. I'm therefore now wondering if this is something to worry about or if this "normal" for a CRM-Service system.

I'm used to seeing eg. IT_123 but not these 9 digits long numbers. As the routine this abended in is called from one of our custom-programs I'm just a bit concerned that some internal tables might not be properly cleared/refreshed/freed after usage.
Thanks for any feedback you have!
Cheers
Baerbel
P.S.: I'm sorry for not participating more in the forums but work just keeps interfering!Hi Samuel,
thanks for your quick reply!
To answer your question, I_IBINWA_REC is just a workarea not an internal table. And all the tables I see in the dump-information don't have many entries, they seem all to be in the 1 or at most 2-digit range. This low number of entries compared to the high number of itab-names is what actually had me worried. Something has to be filling up the available memory and I'd like to pinpoint what it is.
It is possible that the program got squeezed from all sides as it abended during conversion activity with lots of activity in the system.
I am glad to read, though, that these high itab-numbers are seen elsewhere as well!
Cheers

I purchased 2 iPhone 5's the first day they came out. Black 64gb for myself and white 32gb for my wife. She is having somewhat the same issues as you have. Wifi is weak and keeps dropping the signal, and also her phone almost never has LTE. And we are in a very strong Verizon LTE area in north Los Angeles county. My phone has never had any signal issues, wifi or LTE. I have been researching the issue to no avail. I though maybe the white with the brushed alluminum may cause signal issues, but haven't found anything on that and posts about the black one haven't problems blew that theory up.
I have also changed the SIM card and the phone itself and still the same problem. I saw a post about someone getting their phone swapped out and the apple rep told him not to restore the phone, but to just set it up as new. I have yet to try it, gonna try this weekend.. But it makes sense! I, like you have 6 apple devices (2 iPhone 5's, 2 iPhone 4's apple tv3, and the ipad3) and have no issues running all my devices via router.
So I am thinking about the history of the restores and backups and my wife is the only one that went from the 4 to the 5.. Every other device was setup as new. So my theory is that he iphone 5 has issues when you restore from previous backups.. Maybe something a little different from the backups of the previous models create issues in the iPhone 5's?
Like I said, I'm going to give it a shot this weekend and see what happens. If you get a chance to try this before, please let me know if it works and if I try before you I will update you.
Good luck and hopefully we can get these wonderful phones working like they should!

Worried about deleted HDD Recovery files
Hi,
I recently deleted HDD Recovery files off the second partioned hard drive on my laptop so I could merge it into one hardrive.
Upon doing so I realised HDDRecovery may important.
However I am a bit confused if you backed this up to DVD/CD which I have done anyway is this the same utility?
So therefore I would have nothing to worry about?Hi
The HDD recovery was a useful option which would allow you to recovery the notebook without the usage of the Recovery DVD.
You could simply recover the notebook using the HDD recovery option.
But now this will not be possible because you have changed, deleted the HDD partition and therefore you could use only the recovery disk.
I think it will not help to copy the HDD recovery files to the new partition because the previous HDD recovery contained some hidden signs and flags which pointed to the HDD recovery settings -
Worrying about viruses on Windows 8 through bootcamp.
So im going to be installing Windows 8 on my Macbook Pro (Ill list the specs below) for games, as there just arent enough decent games for OS X. As the topic states, im going to be using Bootcamp. Ive done my research on how to do it, im well informed on the subject, and im confident I will be able to do it easily. Im not one of those idiots that says Macs cant get viruses, as I completely understand the real reason why there are less viruses on Mac than on Windows. What im worried about is a possible virus on the Windows side of the computer, and it affecting the OS X side. Is this possible? Say I accidentally contract a virus that basically turns my computer into a block of metal. Will it only be the Windows part of the computer? Or will the entire computer be screwed? I doubt ill be getting a virus, im very careful. Im just wondering. Because of the price, I will not be able to replace this Mac, so I need to know that I wont ruin it just to play some games.
2 GHz Intel Quad-Core i7
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel Iris Pro 1024 MB
OS X 10.9.2on osx the virus scanners are really more about trying to create a market then they are
something one needs to install
Not really. That's simply a common myth, often spread even by high-level members here. We're getting a bit off the topic of malware on Windows in Boot Camp, though, so for those who are also concerned with protecting their Macs from malware, see my Mac Malware Guide. -
Should I worry about the following warning?
I have the following:
public class Record
private RecordMetadata metadata;
private List<Field<? extends Object>> data;
(snip)
public <T> void setValue( String fieldName, T value )
int fieldIndex = this.metadata.getFieldIndex( fieldName );
this.data.set( fieldIndex, new Field<T>( value ) );
public <T> T getValue( Class<T> clazz, String fieldName )
int fieldIndex = this.metadata.getFieldIndex( fieldName );
Field<? extends Object> field = this.data.get( fieldIndex );
return (T) field.getValue( );
}In the last line (return in getValue) I'm getting the following warning (as reported by Eclipse):
Type safety: The cast from capture-of ? extends Object to T is actually checking against the erased type Object
What does this exactly mean? Should I worry about it? Should I do what I'm trying to do in another way?
Thanks in advance, best regards
Josepublic <T> T getValue( Class<T> clazz, String
ng fieldName )
int fieldIndex = this.metadata.getFieldIndex(
dex( fieldName );
Field<? extends Object> field = this.data.get(
get( fieldIndex );
return (T) field.getValue( );
You are not making use of the Class object that you're passing to
getValue. You could use it to get rid of the warning:
return clazz.cast(field.getValue());
