Honest opinion

In your opinion, Is ipad worth the $$$?

Yes, it is worth it to me. I bought it from Best Buy (64 GB 3G). During a recent auto trip it was ideal for my purposes. I used the photo storage to show photos to aged family members who could view the photos easily thanks to the generous screen size. The iBook feature is a wonder but beware it is a not a light weight device compared to the basic types of e-readers. Also, the Apple book library is rather sparce currently. With the nice speed of hotel wifi I enjoyed greatly the access to favorite web forums during the trip. I'm also a movie buff and it is a pleasure for viewing those.
I truly enjoy its portability, informality and ease of viewing for my aging eyes.
I don't recommend this device as a laptop substitute especially for work related purposes.

  • Honest opinion on the iphone

due to this new "price drop" im considering getting an iphone. im a student and couldnt get myself to spend $600 on a phone but now its a little more manageable. i cant really comprehend what the iphone actually has wrong with it. it seems like the people who talk bad about it are the people who dont have one. i need to know the truth about what works and what doesnt. i have a mac so i dont have to deal with that crappy windows corresponding junk.
i just wanna know from people that actually have one. i hear about all these "problems" and it makes me a little weary. ive been to the store and played with the phone many times and it seems really amazing.
so i guess the real question is... is it worth it???
and when you are texting can you turn the phone and have the keyboard horizontal while composing texts??

Definitely not worth the old price! And probably now, definitely worth the reduced price. Beautiful phone, Amazing interface; fun stops there. You are restricted to ATT and ATT is hit and miss; clear and crackly, in and out regardlesss of bars. Edge is slow. Synching is problamatic (windows/Outlook), the "real internet" lacks Flash and other real internet technologies, No games unless you have internet access, No IM, No MMS, No local storage, smartphone portion of device lacks smartphone features and conveniences, phone needs to be reset frequently, locks up quite a bit when trying to answer calls with BT headset, build quality looks great but case is separating from bezel, slippery to hold and extremely expensive to repair, no removeable battery, too many clicks (button presses) to access standard features like phone. You asked for an Honest opinion. My recommendation is to wait for the 2 iPhone rumored to be out this fall, or for the 2nd Generation iPhone. It is a cool phone, but bragging rights are gone, and fixes are slow to come. They've got an 8 cylinder hitting on 6. If you just need a phone, don't want smartphone features, and you have a lot of money, then go ahead and get it. If you need smartphone features then I'd say get something else and don't look back. My recommendation would be to get a much cheaper phone and buy the new iPod Touch. I think you'd get a lot more utility with that combo.
I know this won't be a popular post, but he did ask for an honest opinion, and this is mine. Flame me if you wish, but we all have our own perspectives, mine is just one of them. And yes, I did my homework, I do like the phone, but can find no way to justify the cost of it, the speed of patching, and the customer service.

  • I need an honest opinion on whether or not to buy a macbook now

Here's the deal-- I'm going to college in 4 weeks. I was really looking forward to finally buying a new computer-- my first laptop, my first Mac. I've been following developments in the Macbook line, reading these forums on and off, and I would like your honest opinion: should I buy a Macbook in the next two weeks or so, or do you think that it has too many problems to warrant paying 1500+ dollars?
I'm also going to college in a rather rural location, pretty far away from an Apple Store, so if problems do crop up, I would be basically relying on phone tech support.
My main worry are these reports of Macbooks shutting down without warning. I intend to use this computer for everything, including writing papers, and just the thought of my computer shutting down like that gets me frustrated.
So, do you think Apple has been working to fix these problems that people have been reporting? If you've recently bought a Macbook, are you happy with it? Should I go for this product, or wait until next summer or this Christmas, whenever they release the second generation? (Does anyone have any idea when that will happen, from past product release cycles?)
    Thank you for your advice.

    Hi there!
I just recently bought my first mac, a white Macbook 2.0 Ghz. I am one of those unfortunate souls who happened to get a mac which turns yellow due to sweet...you can imagine how ****** I was when I noticed the discoloration and read about the problem on these forums. Taking into consideration the money I paid, the problem I am facing, and the fact that its my first mac, I think you can accept my opinion as honest.
I say go for it. Even with the unsolved problem I have at the moment I love my mac. Its extremly practical, so easy to use and ever since I got the nack of it I've been encouraging all my friends to switch. When I purchased I was thinking of maybe selling it if I don't like it or getting windows, but I did neither. How long did it take to get the nack of it? I called a friend after I purchased and asked him to give me some tips. He said the most important is "always think of an easier solution, then in windows". He was so right Once i sat over a problem I had for 30 minutes trying to figure out what to do. Finally I searched these forums and than beat myself with a blunt object when I realized how simple it would have been to do what I was trying to. My friends make fun of me and say I praise mac so much I should work at their PR office.
I wouldn't worry about not being close to a store, because as many people mention on these forums also, using phone assistance is often better. Unless your talking to a genious, people in the store say the stupidest things sometimes...I am going to get my discoloration problem solved over the phone also, its much quicker than talking it to a store, even though I am in NY!
The only reason I think you may want to wait, is because supposedly the new os is coming out in august and you may want to get a mac with the new software, if its only a matter of weeks, but gets some info on that from others, cause I am not sure about the exact release date etc.
    Hope all goes well
    All the best
    Rob

  • Honest Opinion about Metalink3 replacing Customer Connection

I had a look at metalink3, and as a PeopleSoft Customer Connection user, I would definitely not log in to that site again.
Its by far the worst possible solution that Oracle has implemented...
    Honest Opinions PLEASE

You are right, it is becoming very painful to find something helpful through the knowledge tab. We should be able to expend the subject and see the subtitel without going inside, means often we have to go up and choose an other link if the first was wrong.
I don't know, but it seems the new design of the Oracle supports are not for technical people who wants fast search, and clear information.
By the new site, nothing help in that way.
One more thing is the search of product, no list, we are force to put something which exactly match to whatever exists...
Let's see by the coming Friday how Peoplesoft will be entirely intregated into Metalink3, but seems hopeless to get a better interface.
    Nicolas.

  • Okay. I want your *honest* opinion

Once upon a time, I needed an MP3 player so I decided to get one at Wal-Mart. It was the Creative Zen Micro and it was almost 200 hundred dollars. This player brought me much joy throughout but eventually, it stopped wanting to connect to the computer 8 out of 0 times. Now it still works and you can play music on it and stuff but this had me fed up. Flash forward a year, a month and some odd days and I decide that it's time for a new MP3 player. I surf the web, going to Wal-Mart's website and voila! I find a Creative Zen Vision: M and it's only 200 dollars! Considering that my 5 gig Zen Micro was almost that much I felt that I'd be getting a deal with this 30 gig player that also plays videos!?Flash forward some odd days. This player acts up just like the Micro did; it doesn't want to connect when I want it to. Maybe about 7 out of 0 times it connects. Even worse, one day it decided to freeze on me and I had to reset it. It took me to Recovery Mode where I saw 4 options:?Clean UpFormat AllReload FirmwareReboot?I tried to Clean Up, but nothing. I Reboot several times only for the player to come back to Recovery Mode. It's been in this stage for almost 3 days now. Some would say I need new firmware (which is probably true) but how can I get that if the player doesn't connect to the computer at all? It doesn't even recognize it. I've tried many, MANY different things including today, I tried following the directions to get it to be recognized but to no avail. The question is this: Do I say 3rd time is the charm and fork over another 200 bucks for one more Creative Zen Vision or do I pay the extra 50 bucks and get a white iPod Video? My brother has used Apple iPods all his life and aside from him smashing the screen on one, his has worked fine. But to be perfectly honest, I don't want to get an iPod that much; I find that Creative's Zen Vision: M is one of the most attracti've players that I've ever seen. Mine is a light blue and while it worked, I was in Heaven (and I don't even believe in God:P)!?Now I'm just pissed. What would you do?!

Well, first step, when did you buy the Vision? If it was less than a year ago, you could likely get it repaired cheaper than you can buy a new one. In this case, you may wish to contact Customer Support and see what options you have available.

  • Need honest opinion :)

Hey guys need some honest opinions here. I want to get 2 of the MSI lightning 7970's. Well I was also looking @ the powercolor HD 7970 vortex ll it has a nice core clock of 1100MHZ and 1425 memory. The msi lightning has 1070 mhz and 1400MHZ, now according to actual MHZ specs the powercolor is faster, but we all know the MSI is faster. Well I can get the powercolor for almost $100 cheaper its $399 vs $489 MSI. I need a new case and buy going with the power color I can get the one i want because I save almost $200.00, if I go with the MSI it will be a while beofer i can get the case I want but I really do need one know, I currently use a alienware aurora R3 and cards will be sandwhiched to tight, so i really need a case. What are your guys thoughs of the powercolor vortex card?

This is a MSI forum and we can't discuss or recommend products competing with MSI products anyway.
The MSI Radeon 7970 Lightning is a great card. It features a way advanced custom MSI PCB with the unique GPU reactor (an add-on PCB that holds additional tantalum capacitors, which helps providing power for the GPU in extreme situations). It also offers the unique triple overvolting feature when using MSI Afterburner.
The Lightning would therefor be a perfect choice after all.

  • I need someones honest opinion about my classe's lab final

hello, my name is Professor John Mane, i am teaching AP java in a high school and would like to know if anyone thinks that this would be good for the lab final- i would like to know if anyone can do it and if can, how long it takes you to do it,
    thank you
Write a class whose ultimate purpose is to either sum al the numbers or take the product of all numbers between 2 limits, skipping numbers, if desired, at regular intervals. The user is given the opportunity to specify the operation (sum or multiply), the limits (either decreasing to increasing or increasing to decreasing), and the skip interval (for example the user wants to sum every third number between 2 and 9 = 2 + 5 + 8 = 15). The user is also given the option to either add or multiply this calculated value to the previously calculated result. At the conclusion of the operation, the user is asked if (s)he wants to continue or to terminate the program. If continue is the option, the whole process begins again.
There will be a test program whose only job will be to create an object which is an instance of this class and to print out job completed x times (where x indicates the number of calculations performed) after the user elects to terminate. It is required that the class have a constructor, a public method to process input and control the flow of execution from the users point of view, and non public methods to do the calculation and print out the results (when invoking a method from within a class, no object or class needs to be provided; just supply the name of the method).
I plan to begin grading on december 30th, so i would like to know if anyone out there can do this- and if can please send me the finished project- my email is [email protected]

bsampieri: yes, it's a ploy. Even assuming a teacher had decided to wait until this late in the semester to come up with an assignment, do you really think they would've decided on when they wanted to start grading it rather than, you know, when they would assign it?
Also, who introduces themselves as "my name is Professor John Mane"? For that matter, why would someone with the title "professor" be teaching an "AP Java" (high school) class?
And isn't "AP Java" really "AP Computer Science"? This doesn't really prove he or she isn't a professor as much as it proves that he or she is a dolt who doesn't even know the name of the class.
Let's see, there's also the aforementioned fact that "send me the finished project" is inconsistent with the desire to see "if it's a good lab final". If he or she is really a professor, they should have no problem actually doing it themselves. And if they can't do it themselves, they really shouldn't be assigning it to kids just learning the language.
I'd add that teachers wouldn't tend to give an assignment like this due over the holidays, but apparently this guy's teacher is enough of an arse to do that very thing. Unless the OP is giving themselves enough time to customize the code so that a google search for it won't find this thread.
I sincerely hope no one answers this jackanape, so that he or she will have wasted all the time coming up with this elaborate scheme and still fail his or her assignment.

  • Honest Opinion of Infinity

    Hello guys and gals,
After 3 days of completely misunderstanding from both myself and BT (Mostly) I ordered my Infinity Option 2. I leave in Earlsfield and the best broadband speed I get at the moment is 1.7MBps (yes I know) so BT is my only option. But spending 24 hours in here reading about the service , P2P restrictions and that unlimited is not unlimited I am getting really worried that I made a huge mistake... But at least I can still cancel my order and not get locked in a 18 month poor service and a broadband that is not really quick unless you want to read TEXT HTML pages which I can do easily with my Iphone almost ..
I am not a huge downloader but I am fair I will say. Anything between 50GB to 150GB a month I will say but its all mostly in P2P ... I dont download games or movies (as I have a Blockbuster Home membership for 12pounds a month on nice bluray quality) but I do download TV shows that I cant purchase in UK (Greek or Australian TV SHows not illegal) ..
I have been with Sky (easynet) for 3 years now and the connection has not ONCE dropped or not worked but the speed of 1.7M is a bit annoying just as I paying the same as others that get speeds of 20MB..
So what is your true experience of BT and if I should keep my order.. I need to have P2P connectivity (and I have read all the forums) but I can deal with P2P been at off peak hours as long as I can get good speeds off-peak.. At the monent I get 210Kbp/s MAX at all times ......
I really want to give BT a chance but the India helpdesk and order taking was appalling and look I am not British  myself but at least get a call centre that can speak English and can use some common sense instead of reading a paper sheet infront of them...
Any feedback would be highly appreciated as I have a week to cancel the order... I wonder if this post will ever make it to the forums
    Mario
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had a new line and Infinity Option 2 installed on Tuesday (8th February).  My IP profile for Infinity is:  38.7 mbit down & 10 mbit up.  So far I've not had any issues with speed - regardless of the time of day/night.
I use Sky Player a lot (daughters don't let me near the Sky remote most of the time so Sky Player is perfect for watching what I want on my laptops or desktops) and it works flawlessly at the top quality at full screen.  I also have another line with Sky Unlimited on it which is also pretty good, but it would stutter/freeze from time to time when watching live football via Sky Player.
Since having Infinity installed I have run 2 speed tests via the BT Speed Tester - (images for the results can be viewed by clicking on my name and viewing my image gallery) -
    Test1: Throughput= 33349 Kbps download & 7308 Kbps upload
    Test2: Throughput= 32951 Kbps download & 7890 Kbps upload
    Test3: Throughput= 34853 Kbps download & 8233 Kbps upload
    Test4: Throughput= 33765 Kbps download & 7982 Kbps upload
    Test5: Throughput= 35320 Kbps download & 8207 Kbps upload
    Test6: Throughput= 32541 Kbps download & 8066 Kbps upload
Speeds have been constant for me & I've been keeping an eye on things via various speed testers and via downloading files.
BBC i-player works flawlessly - used it to watch Panorama & Being Human to name but a few things.
As for dealings with BT staff - I have only dealt with sales of late and they sorted out a human error with my original line & Infinity install order without any fuss.  I've had a phone line with BT for about 15 or so years and never had any great problems when needing work done to fix any faults.  This is the first time I have been with BT as an ISP though and I have had no dealings with Tech Support other than what I have seen here on the forums.
I hope this helps give you an idea of how things are going from my point of view as a new internet customer with BT, but an old hand with regards being a land line customer.
I can't say anything negative regarding my experiences so far as there's been nothing there to complain about, but be sure I'll soon say if I run into problems.
    Kind regards... Tom

  • My opinion on WD Raptor as boot drive

After doing much research, I decided to buy the WD 150 ADFD and use it as a boot drive in my MacPro 2.66. In the other drive bays, I have two WD RE320's as RAID 0, and a single WD 500 for storage.
The reason I'm posting is not to specifically ask a question, but to give my honest opinion on whether a single Raptor makes for a good boot drive or not. As I did my research on the web, I found the general consensus that the Raptor was the drive to buy if you could afford it. The noise was supposed to be not that noticiable, and the speed vs lack of storage was a reasonable trade-off. It's supposed to be the premium SATA drive! As it turns out, I found that consensus to be wrong, and my trust in others opinions is going to cost me a 15% restocking fee. I bought a Raptor last week and have been trying it out over the holidays. I'm sending it back tomorrow and eating the restocking fee that Newegg charges for returns.
The reason I'm returning the drive is because, first off, the speed is not that significant when you consider the premium you are paying for it. The Raptor shaved about 3 seconds off my boot time. Big deal (sarcasm). Applications open maybe a second or two faster (big deal again), though it's hard to tell on my MacPro because it's so fast to begin with. As for general "snappiness" to the OS and general computing, I found NO discernable difference between the Raptor and the stock Seagate that shipped with the computer. Working with Final Cut Pro, I didn't notice any difference in performance and that is my primary application. The RAID 0 is probably having more positive effect on rendering than the Raptor. Then there is the noise... first let me say that the Raptor is quiet when it's at idle. I have no issue with that. The problem for me is that when the head starts seeking, the sound is jarring. Like microwave popcorn? Tadadadadadada...tick....tick....tick....tadadadadada.
What makes the seek noise so bad is that the computer is normally so quiet by comparison. So, if I'm sitting in my office and it's really quiet, all I hear is the faint sound of my X1900 fan. Then the Raptor kicks in and it's like finger nails going across a chalk board. Okay... maybe that an exaggeration, but it really is distracting! I also really hate when the Raptor just does a random loud click when your surfing the web or not doing anything disk intensive. Like, as I'm writing this post... click.......(silence)................... click, click...............(silence)... you get the idea. None of my other drives do that.
I think the Raptor is probably the way to go if your using them in a Raid configuration AND in an area with fairly loud ambient sound, or if you have a tendency to always have music on. However, if you are fairly sensitive to jarring noise and don't need to worry about shaving a few seconds off boot times, then I suggest to go with something besides the single Raptor as boot. Raptors in RAID is another issue entirely and I'm not knocking that. What I am knocking is when I read where someone posts that the noise in their Raptors in RAID are barely noticable. I call BS on that so beware.
I'm sending my Raptor back soon as I get an RMA and going back to the stock Seagate until I figure out what else to use. Maybe the WD SE 320 Caviar or the Maxline Pro? Something around 320GB for OS and applications only and a Windows partition.
    Any suggestions?
Thanks for reading. Your comments are appreciated!
    Al

To be honest, I haven't run extensive scientific
tests but the ones I did perform didn't show much of
an advantage using a single Raptor as the
OS/application boot drive. Last night I booted off
the Raptor and then loaded a Final Cut project and
rendered out the timeline. The scratch disk was set
to the RAID and the media was coming off a storage
drive. It took 4 minutes 49 seconds to render the
timeline. Next, I booted off the stock Seagate 160
(7200.09) and ran the same render. The OS was an
exact same version that I'm running on the Raptor (I
had cloned the Seagate from the Raptor using
SuperDuper!). Anyway, I ran the render on the same
file and it took exactly the same amount of time. 4
    minutes 49 seconds.
Again, am I missing something here?
    You are not missing anything.
Using a "fast disk" as the system drive will improve some things, and if you are used to an older, slower disk drive then you'll probably notice a bigger difference. A Raptor in a macpro for OS use is only going to help marginally, in the way you have noted. Better, but not that much.
I'm not sure about your expectation of seeing FCP perform better in your test though. I wouldn't expect there to be any improvement there. Rendering speed tends to be limited by processing rather than disk speed for a start. Where a fast drive helps is when applications need fast reads and writes. Writing a 100GB self-contained movie from the FCP timeline to some external storage wont be speeded up no matter what system drive you have (unless the original footage is stored on the OS disk of course!). The speed will be dictated by the drive your writing to and the drive you are reading from. Unless you have set your scratch disk as your boot drive or footage is stored there or you're writing to it then the boot drive will have no effect.
Like everything in computer land, whether you need that extra power, speed, size etc always erm... "depends". having just 5% extra kick might be the difference between a realtime preview or a render for eg.
I agree with a "vibe" I am picking up from you though: that all those reviews and user comments on the web can be very misleading. If you've spent $50 more on something then its not easy to admit (even to yourself) that it wasn't ~really~ worth it. Once you see the quoted benchmarks for yourself and the 2sec reduction at boot most folks will feel the purchase was worth it. Will it make you work better? Not really. I went from a G3 B/W mac to a MacPro but the music I make is no more jolly than it was before
If you ~really~ want to see big improvements to any standard drive you have to look at RAID and more specialist solutions like scsi and fibre channel - but even these wont make your processor work any quicker!

  • Failure to fix my cable for over a year and a half! HELP!

Failure to fix my cable for over a year and a half! HELP!
I regretfully have to inform you that I might have to discontinue using Comcast, for the following reasons if I cannot et you to resolve these issues. It should be noted that this is something that I do not want to have to do. However, basically I have no choice.
    1. Repeated and Constant Internet Issues and Poor TV Quality for over a year.
    2. A substandard quality of service, just even compared to my next door neighbors who has Comcast. The service has issues daily. Not a week has gone bye without an issue either small or large.
    3. Constant and repeated interrupt of service and an overall low quality of product. Time Outs, High Ping rates into the 100s and 200s, Cable Light Off, Poor Quality of TV picture, fuzzy, Digital Blocking even on non-digital channels with or without box, Occasional CB Radio chatter over interment connection <-(the odd one).
    4. The constant run around from the employee’s at Comcast and Service Department who either are unable to fix my problem, or unwilling to fix my problem, or have no one qualified to fix the problem. The amount of service calls and tech support personal I have had come to my house and had to call is so numerous I cannot even recall the amount.
    5. Paying full price for a substandard quality and product while others around me do not have too. Including my next door neighbor which does not seem to have an issue.
    The Story-
I purchased this house over a year and a half ago. Note; I did think it was odd that the pervious owner of this house had Comcast TV, but a DSL internet connection (I know now why he had to do that). In a brief conversation with him recently when he was visiting our next door neighbors he told me of how he had the same issues and had to switch to DSL.
I am, and always have been an avid Cable user and in particular for the Internet as the Broadband just makes it so much more enjoyable. I used Time Warner Cable for over 7-years prior to “having to” use Comcast with great service and good connection and a highly enjoyable time over the internet playing games and surfing the web. I have to use the words :“having too”, as you are the only Broad Band Internet connection in my area currently (I moved to the Burbs, not the Boonies) so I still don’t understand why my choices are limited. Must be nice to have a Monopoly though. : ), and I am starting to think this maybe part of my problems and why nothing is being done.
In any case, my internet use is for entertainment only. Surfing the Web, playing video games, Online Classes, and whatnot. Nothing life treating, or a must have service and basically, fun for the family, not for frustration. I like to use Cable as I never have to worry about the line cutting out or losing connection. This used to be the case, but with Comcast I do have to worry about this, and it happens often. Simply put: it is NOT always ON as advertised, at least for me.
    The Issues-
From day one, I have had nothing but repeated and constant issues with my internet service. I don’t even think I had Comcast a week before I had to make my fist service call. See I was used to another Cable service and silly me expected my cable to work. From there it was all downhill. I have had so many service calls its actually outlandish and would be funny if it was someone else. Its like a TV sitcom actually.
Each and every service call goes the same way. Tech comes out, stands around, recognizes the problem and leaves. No fixes mind you, and the reasons are below.
    Recent History-
With the internet on the fritz again and only seeming to get worse I decided to call and have someone come out and check it. A preemptive strike on my part in other words, before it totally blew out like it does and taking days for it to come back on. I have been dealing with this for over a year getting kind of frustrated with the whole process.
I talk to the service department and they also see the issue (sporadic interrupt of service and poor quality). With so many problems and the list ever growing most likely on my report the service guy said he would send a Line Tech out to check my problem on Monday (the ninth).
I think to myself finally some progress and it only took a year, a real Line Tech my issue is sure to be solved.
Unfortunately, the apparent Line Tech does and did the same as every other tech sent to the house. Set around for 20 or so minutes futzing around with the computer. Notes the issue of single loss and poor TV quality makes some notes and says sign here. *take note of paragraph below about Line Tech.
Around Thursday, I call up the service department basically asking if and when my service problems will be fixed. With little shock and surprise I was told that nothing is scheduled the last service call the Line Tech was not really a Line Tech and I should have been called back and or at least informed of that a Line Tech was not scheduled to be sent. This is normal by the way.
The Phone Tech checked my service and found that an issue did exist and proceeded to tell my that he would advise his supervisor of the issue. He also stated that if someone had not called me by 6:00PM this coming Saturday, that I could call and he would expedite matters.
    Tick-Tock-Tick-Tock-Tick-Tock-Tick-Tock
Saturday at 6:20PM I call up the service department, punch in my phone number and low and behold I’m sent immediately to the Clams Department instead of the Service Department LOL.
After explaining the issue to the Clams Department (my thinking is at this point is; why pay for it if its not working and they wont fix it) I am transferred to the Service Department after a brief expiation of the issue. I guess I am a little late with my bill, but can you blame me?
    The Run Around-
Talking to a new service persona again which is the same with ever tech sent to the house (Never the same one twice). Apparently nothing is on my report about this call I made earlier, or he does not note it.
The new service tech while helpful and curious taking the brunt of my frustrations at this point goes through the same procedures that I have been through so many times now I know them by hart. I acknowledge the fact ahead of time to myself that my tone although frustrated is nothing personal, and the service tech should not take it personally. Its just that at this point I’m beyond frustrated. I try to be as understanding and curious as I can while he tries to help me.
I explain the repeated problems and what is going on. In this instants the service tech mentions something about some service package (come kind of other signal maybe being sent to the modem).
At the time my internet is somewhat working with only a few time outs and just above normal pings so I cant really blame him for not seeing an issue. I’m mainly calling just to find out why I didn’t receive a phone call, or get another appointment to have this checked into.
My service was cutting out right before I called, which is why I called. The service tech just happened to check my service while it was working for 20 or so minutes. : P
Although, I am sure the Tech knew what he was doing and seemed very knowledgeable and probably thought he had resolved an issue that has been plaguing me for over a year now I knew nothing had changed. (this has happened before by the way same exact procedure in fact, and must be part of the training).
I’m trying to hold my volume down and not get too upset. Its not the techs fault and probably does not know I have gone through this procedure before. I want to try to explain this but he is busy trying to work his magic. I remain calm, but I even made the statement that I would probably be calling him back in 15-minutes. I try to end the conversation and phone call as politely as I can. Its not his fault, his just trying to do a job.
    Anthony
    Case Number: 053300005
Well not even five minutes later you will never guess what………… Pings start dropping and the internet is cutting out on me.
    The Problem-
The problem has been defined as a Line Issue, and an On and Off interrupt of service. At this point even the TV is being affected. From the first time I called (like over a year ago) the issue is defined to me as an On OFF issue.
The Problem trying to get this fix-
You apparently have no Line Techs.
The Pole near my house is apparently a Forbidden Area that no one must go near. LOL
You cannot get these people to go near it apparently. They only classify the problem and go away never to be seen nor heard from again.
Now honestly I can understand with employee issues seeing this happening from time to time, but not for over a year and with service calls up in the tens and twenties…..
    Worst of All-
I think the worst part of all of this is I have become so used to the poor and substandard quality of service. So used to it that I only call or complain when its totally out or is visually not working correctly and can be tested. I don’t call and complain because its not working as Advertised, because in fact it really never did or does.
I also, don’t call a lot of the times because of dealing with the service department. If its working at that moment they cannot define the problems. Not really anyone’s fault as it looks like its working even if the pings are in the 200 range or currently no time outs are accruing. I mean at least its working, and they say Speed is not Guaranteed anyway.
    The Forgotten and Unanswered Questions-
I don’t know about the rest of you but sometimes while talking to people I forget to ask questions or the question does not come to mind until the conversation is over with. In any case, the Phone Service Tech said that what he did should have been done along time ago.
    However, if my cable was somehow magically fixed by what he did I still have these questions;
1.What happened to my Service Call and why did no one call my by 6:00PM today?
-I waited around for the call actually, and I really would like to get this issue resolved.
    2. Why is my TV picture still bad?
    3. Although my internet seemed to be working today and only cut out once for a brief period of time why did the supposed fix of the Phone Tech double and even triple my pings, and still occasionally cuts out?
This is usually when I can tell its going to start acting up as the interrupts become more frequent and growing in intensity and length. I always have them anyway I am used to it.
However, on the other hand, I am already seeing time outs and interrupts and should I be paying full price for a lower quality of service compared just to my next door neighbor ?
This is a very hard question for me to ask myself. I like using Cable rather than a Dialup Service, but there is also the whole principle to the matter as well.
*Should I pay full price for a service that is substandard to everyone else’s?
*Should I pay full price for the same connecting I used to get a discount for, because of the poor quality?
*Should I call and complain everyday and turn this into a daily ritual? I cant keep taking time off from work to wait for someone who does nothing except stand around and futz with the computer for 20mintes and recognize the issue.
*Should I have to complain so much and go through the process which is like pulling teeth to get you guys to do something about it?
Maybe this is all my fault, and I am doing something wrong. What do I have to do to get this fixed? I don’t want to have to get DSL, so someone please help me. What am I doing wrong. I cannot keep taking time off from work to have someone come out only to recognize I have an issue and never fix it.
    To Whomever at Comcast:
Is it so wrong of me to want, after a year of having repeated service calls with no resolution to the issue to ask, and request, that the cable service provided to me is the same as everyone else’s?
    If you handed noticed-
Well if you haven’t noticed by now I am really tying to get this situation fixed and resolved. Mostly because, it is to the point where I am going to have to stop using Comcast and get DSL, or AOL or something because its more reliable. Which I really don’t want to do in the first place cable is supposed to be reliable and always on and faster.
A little over a year not and I am running out of options though.
    Seriously Cant anyone help?

    Part/3-
    Swami
    Wed/Jan/18
    An eventful day-
Just a few minutes ago, got a phone call from the Comcast Cable GUY (2:20pm). He then Says he’s been working on trying to find the problem from 1 O’clock. Apparently, and maybe the case, (it was a brief conversation and he will get back to me later) but maybe some part has gone bad somewhere and he said he was waiting on a phone call from someone else.
In any case, he said that they are trying to clear up the problem and that its been running better sense the Jan/14.….? Not here it hasn’t. LOL We also had a brief discussion about how due to my repeated use of the internet that maybe I notices this more than other people do. My next door neighbor does not seem to have any issues last time I talk to them. But the guy said someone who lives on Broadway (few streets over) has been having issues too so maybe its this part.
I said; So I should see some improvement today… silence…and a brief pause….. After I find out what the problem is Ill come over and discuss it with you so you know exactly what is going on.
I do have a feeling I am going to be told this is going to take weeks to fix or at least awhile. Apparently a Part is needed maybe. Ill have to wait until the guy shows and gives me a full explanation though.
I called my wife and told her of the event and she is pretty emphatic about returning the TV cable box as the TV picture is better without it and she only really looks at the local or 3-like 70 anyway. She was like “Bad Part?” well its been bad for over a year then! We should get a refund for the whole year then… Sorry Comcast she is on a Refund Kick… I just want it to work.
    Part/4-
The Tech Supervisor Mark, showed up at my door and tried to explain the issues. I felt kind of bad cause I probably know he got Chewed on along with some other people probably. At least they sent someone older and who looked like he had more experience and knew what he was talking about and could actually find the issue.
I tried to be as apologetic as I could, and tried to explain that its just because this has been such a persistent issue over the past year and a half, and I have had way too many service calls for this not to be fix by now. I even went so far as to explain; it’s a new year and we are trying to get this problem finally fixed. I was also quick to mention how nice it was outside and that at least it was a good day to run around outside. I would have felt really bad if it was raining or snowing out, but it was a nice day probably upper 60s and sunny.
We briefly discussed the issues and he said he and some others (I guess) had been working t the Head End fixing some issues… Which actually might have fixed my TV picture, seems better right now currently though. Currently NO digital Blocking on any channels currently, but as I said, it’s a sporadic issue popping up one day and going away the next or the problem lasting weeks and months then nothing for a few days and weeks.
Mark, tried to explain that maybe the problem that I might been having (apparently along with a few others) was that a Temporary Line was connected on the MAIN. Basically 1” Main Line Cable run it to cable like that’s in your house (cant remember but off hand I think its 5, 10 or 15 gauge cable) and back to 1” Main Line Cable. It was all a little technical, I just nodded and said yes, and at least you might have found the issue right?
He didn’t know how long that had been like that, and I said; probably for over three years as the previous owner had issues too, or at least sense I had bought this house about a year and a half.
I went so far as to showed him some print screens of some of the issues I have been having, and I know he noticed all the yellow recites in my computer room. : P Unfortunately, I deleted all my old Print Screen saves when the guy last Monday (ninth) showed up and said he would fix the line, or at least track it down. I only had one from the previous night to show him or something.
In any case, while discussing this Mark, said the guy that came out the other Monday never filled out a work order or something like that. I basically tried to explain that is the kind of thing I have been dealing with for little over a year. Tech after Tech after Tech; as I looked at all the yellow recites on top of my computer desk.
Mark also, basically said, I should have pretty fast cable considering I only have two nodes and then basically it runs back to Comcast, or something like that. However, that Temporary Line is probably causing the issues. No definite date on a fix, but maybe 24-hours or a few days, but the matter had been expedited or something like that. *Cross fingers*
That’s the real issue with this cable, its sporadic, and comes and goes. I’m pretty sure they are going to try to replace that line, but you know what….. I have heard that before actually. I have actually heard that for over a year now. Even the expedited part. : P
Mark tried to thank me for pointing out this issue, and made some comment about how its actually helping them….but………. I can kind of tell he had been getting yelled at or something by someone. It was not obvious, but I could tell.
I felt kind of bad about that, but… That happens when you work for someone, and the people who work for you (below you) don’t do what they are supposed too.
I kind of tried to briefly explain to Mark about the issue again and that usually by the time a Supervisor gets out the issue has cleared up for a time….. Odd how that works by the way. But basically I got the old…well it looks like its working ok now and you should have seen some improvements over the last few days… thingy..
We started talking about that Temporary Line being connected again and I walked Mark to the door and we said our goodbyes and I apologized again for being such a pain in the about this whole matter.
    Part/5-
I called the wife and told here about everything. The first thing she asked is; is it fixed? She is still not happy especially when I tired to explain what the issue was and probably was and that at least maybe they found it.
I have no idea of what kind of onward action maybe on my part in the end if things don’t get better. Its like trying to argue with the old Bell Telephone Company when that was the only phone company in the US and no other phone companies existed.
I hope to one day, be a satisfied Comcast Customer, but to date I have yet to feel that way, at least with the Internet in any case and that’s only because I really don’t watch TV.
I am also, hoping when, and if, some LINE is replaced somewhere that I see some drastic improvement along with apparently a lot of other people in my community and a lot less issues also. I still don’t believe that I should be just setting for; Ok well at least its ON now, or the light has finally stopped flashing.
    All a SNAFU?
That’s highly questionable at this point, and I have to be honest with you. This is going on a year and a half of dealing with this. This SNAFU, could be the case, but it seems more like policy, or a standing Comcast Company Directive actually if you want my honest opinion. I don’t know what the Maintenance Budget is for my area, but you might want to consider doubling it, or tripling it.
I really don’t care actually when this is fixed, as long as the issue is fixed. I cannot make a final judgment until it is finally fixed and go on and try to take further action onward from that point.
Thus far I have only been given an explanation. I don’t know if anyone at Comcast realize exactly how many times I have had an explanation given too me though (either on the phone with a service tech or from an actual person “tech” at my house). The list is extensive of the actual explanations I have had over the past year and a half, but my favorite one is; squirrels.
    Part/6-
We are still waiting on phone calls from people who said they would call us back today and check what’s going on. Both of us, (me and the wife) are slowly losing momentum again as this whole issue gets dragged out for weeks and weeks at a time.
She is tired and I’m tired too, and Comcast is warring us down again it looks like. My wife was like; “do I have to call them, I really didn’t have a good day anyway and I’m tired. They were supposed to call us anyway, lets wait.”
I tried to make a phone call (half heartedly, I myself as I’m tired too) as Carla (at my local Comcast office) wanted to know how the service call went, but after repeated attempts and being shuffled off to Billing, and then being put on hold : P ……and its actually getting close to dinner time. Maybe after dinner if I don’t just fall asleep first.
So, in the end its still hang on for a few more days, and or, wait to have the problem fixed. Your guess is as good as mine, people. More Smoke and Mirrors or an actual Fix. Your guess is as good as mine.
As for me, I’m going to bed, I’m worn out. Maybe a new line to replace that temporary one, maybe just saying I might get a new line to replace that temporary one.
The Saga continues. Maybe it will end someday.

  • OfficeJet 8500 Pro A910 display freezed on "Printing in progress"

    Hi,
I've a problem with my OfficeJet 8500 Pro A910. When I send a file to print the print queue on PC shows "Print error" and on the printer display appears "Printing in progress" but nothing is printed. At this point I must switch off the printer, wait some seconds, switch on the printer and send again the file to the printer, so the file is finally printed.
The printer is plugged by wired network and I've the same error on Windows 8 and Windows 7 PC. Why?

Hello and thank you for your update.
In my honest opinion and from my experience working in this field, it could be anything at this point. Your printer may be having an issue where the screen is freezing when you send a command to the printer.
You want to try everything before you determine it's your printer that is at fault.
Make sure you have this printer plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector?
Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall your software? (To make sure that's not a possible cause)
How long have you been experiencing this issue for?
Also, try a hard reset. Click here to perform this step.
Let me know your troubleshooting steps and I will continue to assist you further.

  • Upgrade question for laptop to run PPro CS6/CC

    All,
I've spent the last several days reading, researching and generally getting up to speed on what my options are re hardware moving forward, and though I've been a lurker/user of these forums (and others) for years, this is my first time engaging directly now that I feel I know a bit more. I must also say how incredible a resource the regular users like Harm Millard have been to self-taught but enthusiastic newbies like me - thank you!
I've been a longtime self-taught, relatively light but still barely pro Premiere Pro user for the past ten years. For the past couple of years, I've been barely getting by using CS4 on my once-top-of-the-line Dell Precision M6500 laptop running Win7 Pro 32-bit. The M6500 is by far my favorite PC I've ever owned and is still rocking, even with older specs (listed below), but it is time to grow up, bite the bullet and (hopefully) upgrade this machine so that I can take advantage of CS6/CC and do a bit more heavy lifting (basic color correction, light After Effects, etc).
I currently shoot on a Sony AX2000 in AVCHD, but am starting to do more work on my Canon t3i and am close to moving up to a Canon 5D mk3, so will be using more HD MOV files in the near future, possibly alongside the old AVCHD footage. Most of my exports are for HD web uploads, but also occasionally export to DVD. I do not anticipate stepping up to Red footage or the like in the near or mid future.
My current laptop specs are as follows:
    Win7 32-bit
    4GB RAM
    Intel i7 quad core M620 (2.67GHz)
    500GB 7200rpm HDD
    Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M
I've already ordered a RAM upgrade to get me to 16GB, have Win7 64-bit ready to install, and just bought 2 x 750GB 7200rpm HDD (Western Digital). Instead of investing in an all new machine (laptop or desktop), and considering the amazing stability and longevity (so far) of the M6500, I'd like to try and see if I can get this machine to a place where I can take advantage of CS6/CC and have it run stably and somewhat fast. I realize it's not the best option, and that getting an all-new tricked out desktop is the preferred option, but for budget reasons, that's not possible right now.
    Here's my plan:
Upgrade so that system will be:
    Win7 64bit
    16 GB RAM
    2 x 750GB 7200rpm HDDs (internal)
rest of the system listed above would remain the same as above - namely CPU and graphics card
The machine can also support a mSATA mini SSD (up to 256GB), but I haven't splurged for that yet. I'm  trying to figure out whether to use the two new HDDs in RAID 0 and have the OS, project files, cache, source footage and export files all on those two RAIDed drives, or whether it would make a truly huge difference to add another internal SSD as the boot/OS/Program Files drive and leave the RAID 0 configuration to handle all video and project files. I've read enough to assume that adding the SSD is the preferred option, but it's pricey, and what I'm trying to determine is whether or not it's really worth the cost vs a straight 2-HDD RAID 0 configuration.
I've read a lot about the dangers of RAID 0, but am not too concerned about failures since I use an online backup system (Sugarsync) for all my document files (this machine doubles as my main work PC) and I regularly back up all source and exported video files.
On a separate note, I realize that my graphics card is not listed among the supported cards for CS6/CC - is that going to cause stability and/or significant performance issues, or will it work since I won't be doing 4k/Red files? Is the CUDA hack an option for me? I have the option of upgrading the card to a supported card (Nividia M5000), but it's hugely pricey (close to $2k) and unless it will make the machine an absolute stud for years to come, it's not worth it.
So in short (yeah right ), here are my questions:
Does my proposed new system have the juice to handle what I want to do?
Which HDD setup is preferred, and by what degree (do I absolutely have to get the SSD to make this work?):
    2 x 750GB 7200rpm HDDs in RAID 0 for the entire machine
1 x SSD (what size is minimum recommended?) as boot/OS plus 2x750GB HDDs in RAID 0
Will my existing Quadro 2800M graphics card make the other RAM/HDD upgrades a waste of money?
Is my existing CPU powerful enough to warrant these other upgrades?
Sorry for the long post, and thanks for any help you guys can provide!

    Van,
Tough love - I'm going to give you my honest opinion here, but it does make me feel bad since you seem to have already ordered parts before you posted.
    1. In a word no. Your processor is dual core. You really want at least quad core + hyperthreading for the media that you will be pushing around. The Quadro 2800M only has 96 CUDA cores and DDR3 (slow) memory. BTW, task manager shows 4 "cores" when you have a dual-core + hyperthreading.
    2. I'd choose 2. - much nicer - worth the cost
    3. yes
    4. no
So what to do if you cut bait on your current plan and get a new laptop. Check out recent (< 6 mths old) threads here for lots of discussion at various price points. Gamers laptops and Sager/Clevo models definitely offer the best bang for the buck for laptops to run Premiere, mostly due to the GTX video line trouncing the Quadro line for performance for the price. I loved the Dell M6500 in its time. If you want to replace it with something current day the M6700 is good, but I like what HP is doing for the 17" workstation class even better in 2013. If you can buy a few months, I suspect the new smaller die size 22nm Intel cpus will be really help for laptop performance (desktops have just about all the cpu cooling capacity required, but in laptops cooling through tiny tiny coolers and tiny, tiny, quiet fans is way limited - so, the new lower wattage, cooler 22nm cpus should be much larger boost for laptop users than workstations).
I suspect that I would really enjoy editing on a well thought out $1500 Asus, even better on a $2200 Sager, and would have similar performance with the support of HP or Dell at closer to a $3000 price point for the media you mention above. ADK sells Sager/Clevo laptops and has much better support for video (and audio) editors than HP or Dell ever dreamed to provide; prices would be a bit more than www Sager dealers but ADK is a no-brainer if you want "real" support and a machine that is tweaked for Adobe.

    Jim
