Hotspot usage

I want to use my hotspot instead of WiFi but it won't work as long as WiFi is available. Is there a way to make it work? The bandwidth is much better on my phone than what my ISP offers at home. I am trying to stream HD movies, and the performance is terrible.

Thanks for that. What I later discovered was that on my iPhone 5S, a warning pops up when turning on the hotspot if a WiFi connection is already available. By accepting "turn on WiFi", it then works. HD movies are now streaming properly. Hopefully this post will help others with a similar problem.

  • Detect enabled internet connection sharing (hotspot usage) on Windows Phone 8.1

    My WindowsPhone 8.1 application displays the current network/internet connection (e.g. the SSID/connection profile when connected to a WLAN). For retrieving this information, I use the following snippet:
    var ssid= ""
    foreach (var connectionProfile in NetworkInformation.GetConnectionProfiles())
    if (connectionProfile.IsWlanConnectionProfile && connectionProfile.GetNetworkConnectivityLevel() != NetworkConnectivityLevel.None)
    ssid = connectionProfile.ProfileName;
    break;
    I'd like to show some additional info when the phone has internet sharing enabled (acts as hotspot). What's the most reliable way to find this out?

    Hi Ronald,
    I think there is no way to detect if windows phone enable the internet sharing, if you want customer know the current state, you can consider about this:
    How to use the connection settings task for Windows Phone 8 to navigate user to the connection setting page.

  • Seeking some straight answers on "share everything" and mobile hotspots

    Hello all;
    I get a sense from reading other posts that the "share everything" plan is -- to say the least -- not going over too well among most Verizon customers.  However I'm one case for which I think it might actually be beneficial.  Here's the facts.  My wife has an iphone -- 2GB data per month.  I have a regular phone -- basic 39.99 per month for calls with no extras, not even texting.  Right now both phones are set up as individual lines under my account number; nothing is shared.  I went through the simple calculator Verizon had on the site, and the monthly cost came out to about what we're paying now --$140 plus "other fees" (whatever than means).
    So it seems to me that it might be a good move, just it case I ever had a need for accessing data on my "dumb" phone -- which right now is pay as you go.  Also, since my wife uses wifi most of the time, it would appear that the 2GB per month would be more than adequate for both of us.  Am I missing something here?  Some fee or hidden costs that I'm overlooking?
    Second quesiton:  Verizon indicates that mobile hotspot is "free" with the share everything plan.  Does this mean that we could use my wife's iPhone as a hotspot in order to use our wifi-only iPad when we are in location that does not have wifi service?  Sorry if that's an obvious question, but I don't really find a clear explaination of this on Verizon's site.  Also, I assume hotspot usage counts against the monthly data allowance?  Or is that a whole separate charge we would get hit with?
    Thanks in advance for any and all enlightenment on these issues!

Some fee or hidden costs that I'm overlooking? you aren't missing anything. most users use well below 2 gigs, especially if they use wifi often.
    Second quesiton:  Verizon indicates that mobile hotspot is "free" with the share everything plan.  Does this mean that we could use my wife's iPhone as a hotspot in order to use our wifi-only iPad when we are in location that does not have wifi service? yes Sorry if that's an obvious question, but I don't really find a clear explaination of this on Verizon's site.  Also, I assume hotspot usage counts against the monthly data allowance? yes Or is that a whole separate charge we would get hit with? no seperate charge. you're looking at about $160 total (after taxes and fees). however, keep in mind that if you start using her hot spot for wifi access for your ipad, your data could go up pretty quickly so you will want to monitor it closely for a while.
    Thanks in advance for any and all enlightenment on these issues!
    basically, you are looking at $140 (as jimfitzgerald stated) plus about $20 in taxes and fees for unlimited talk and text on both phones and 2 gigs of data that can be used via hotspot from the iphone. it's that simple.

  • Hotspot Not Working on Z10 After Software Release 10.3.1.1565

    Hi,
    Since the last update of OS Ver 10.3.1.1565 hotspot on my Z10 is not working and every time I try to connect receive a message, "Regulations in This Country Prohibit Mobile Hotspot Usage"
    I am using Warid Telecom (Pakistan) LTE connection and after shifting to LTE hotspot was working but since the last OS update problem started.
    A friend of mine using BB Z3 and he also received and updated the same OS update but his hotspot is working, just checked yesterday.
    What could be the possibel issue and solution?
    Regards,

    First, let me just say I don't think it's worth the trouble.  This is where the OS is headed.  If you downgrade, you make yourself vulnerable to the FREAK web attacks and lose many useful upgrades.
    However, if you just can't live with it I'd downgrade using an autoloader:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-10-OS-Device-Software/Upgrading-OS10-devices-using...
    Once it's reloaded then you can restore the backup you have.  Again, I don't think it's worth it but it's your call.  I recommend making a backup now, in case you decide later it was a mistake and want to upgrade again and want your data back.

  • Unable to Create Wifi Hotspot after OS update

    I have just updated the OS on my Q5 to 10.2.424.  When I now try to create a WIFI Hotspot I get the message"Regulations in this country prohibit Mobile Hotspot usage."  This is not true and how do I roll back to the previous OS to get this working again?

     Apparently do do not know quite what a WiFi hotspot is. You don't create one on your computer you can access one if there is one in the vicinity of your computer. Read this for better understanding:

  • Very fed up with Verizon Wireless customer service, wanting to cancel?

    Let me start by saying I've had Verizon since it was Bell Atlantic Mobile.  As a current customer I have 7 phones and a hotspot, my monthly billing is somewhere in the neighborhood of $600 a month, my service has never been turned off for non payment.  I know in today's wireless this doesn't make me a special customer, if anything just a good customer to have if you are lucky enough to have me.
    I only call into Verizon customer service when I need something.  Not want, not to complain, only need something.  Lets give some examples.  I received a $3,000 bill in the mail that had a ton of international LD charges on it.  So I call into Verizon because me nor my wife knows anyone in the Caribbean.  Not one to jump to judgement I politely called my wife first and asked if maybe she had a pool boy that went home to S. America that she was keeping in touch with, she assured me that she did not so then I called VZW.  It ended up being fraudulent activity that I spent a good deal of a day or so ensuring they were going to credit it off, and to VZ credit they did.  As annoying as that it, I understand that it happens.  Lets rewind to my previous phone call a month before this happen.
    I added my wife to my plan, and my rate actually remained the same with the new plan (we won't complained that obviously that means I was over-billed for maybe two to three years if I can add a line and the rate is the same) so I was happy.  What I wasn't happy about was when I added her onto my plan I saw my upgrade date had been moved from 22 mo (which is what I agreed too, signed for, and used too) to the full 24 mo.  Calling into VZ customer service I just wanted what was fair, the ability to upgrade at 22 mo.  After being told no, hung up on by a supervisor (accidentally I'm sure) while they "researched" my current, 7 line $500 a mo account, and then calling in a finally getting someone who gave a rip, they told me I would manually be allowed to upgrade but I would just have to call into customer service and not go into a store.  To me this was fair, but again a good hour wasted trying to receive what I deemed fair to myself.
    So, ff to after the $3k bill, which occurred after seeing my upgrade date changed, while my pregnant wife is out, and I'm at work I attempt to call her and I receive a fast busy on my cell.  I message her, same thing.  I log into my online account to see if I have forgotten to pay the bill and its paid, however I see my two devices has been changed from my i phones to some old Samsung phones.  Unfrigginbelievable.  Some one, some how, has swapped my phones with someone else phones.  Once again I check with my other lines to see if something happened accidentally, I was almost sure one of my sisters (one of the 7 lines) had went into a store and screwed up the account.  I called both (I own an ATT iphone as well) and neither has changed anything.  I then called VZ from my ATT phone and ask them WTH happened?  Being a former telecommunications rep I ask all the relevant questions (can you give me a location id where the change was made?  Was it online or a store? etc), after being blamed of changing it myself, I finally got my original phones turned back on for my wife and I.  However I then address the obvious with the representative, "honey your customer accounts are being hacked, and it's serious, I've been hit twice in three months."  Knowing this rep is on the bottom rung, will probably mention it to her supervisor who won't do anything about it, I also forward a suspicious text to VZ fraud dept as well.  While on the phone Im assure this won't happen again and for "safety and security" we changed my verification password.
    So lets count, we have my account hacked once and my phones swapped, we have my numbers hacked and used for LD calls to the tune of $3k, and we have me adding a line and seeing my upgrade date has changed.  This is from July to DEC 2013
    FF to 2014 Jan, my father is concern about his hotspot usage and would like to know why he keeps coming close to usage.  After explaining to my dad he shouldn't be using his ipad to view anything on NFLX he assures me he is not.  So I call in to verify what line is using up all the data usage on the account, when asked to verify my code, you know that code we assuredly had changed a few months earlier, Im told I need to go into a store and show ID.  Not sure about everyone else but I don't really like near a corporate VZ store, and secondly I can verify my SS, address on both accounts, all MTN's, when the phones were activated etc.  Yeah I just don't have the verification code that you guys supposedly changed after I requested a specific code since my account has been HACKED 2x in 6 mo.  Oh yeah, ALL I WANT IS USAGE ON MY ACCOUNT to see who's hogging the data.  Sigh.  After reasoning with the representative (and threatening to take the day off to escalate this up to the call center director if I need to so I can find out who is using up the most data) he gives me this information, and finally corrects my pass code.  I apologized to the rep because I know he's just doing his job, but at this point every time I need something simple from VZ it's an act of congress.
    So lets go to what is the final straw for me, my wife and I welcomed our first child into the world on Feb 7th.  On the day we took him home it was raining pretty bad and her phone dropped and basically became water damage, once I had time to call in I was simply going to upgrade my line (remember that promise to upgrade manually if I call customer service) and switch my phone to hers.  Well I call in an after not finding the note (on hold 15 mins, then once the nice young lady came on line she had me on hold for maybe another 5, and her advising me of all she couldn't do), they finally locate the note that I am allowed to upgrade and bill my phone to my account EXCEPT an iphone.  Not to sound like a pretentious apple whore but everything I use is aapl.  Two laptops, one desktop, 3 iphones, 2 ipads, 2 ipods and a partridge in a iphone tree.  Yeah Im that guy.  At this point I tell her (VZ customer service rep) of my last 6 mo. with VZ and at this point, Im beyond frustrated.  My wife needs a phone and Im supposedly allowed to upgrade yet again VZ is telling me what they can't do.  Im not asking for a free phone, I just wanted to pay for a 64gb, iphone 5s, and switch my existing phone over to my wife number.
    I ask the representative to just take ownership of this, I cannot spend hours on the phone with VZ every time I call in.  At this point I wanted one of two things, either allow me to upgrade my phone line or just zero out the contracts on these two lines and allow me to leave.  I have been more than patient and understanding with VZ.  At this point I believe any rational objective person can agree,  VZ and I need to break up at this point. Even the representative is in a bit of disbelief, she assures me she or someone will call me last night.
    Well now it's today.  Ball is in your court VZ.  Im a good day away from buying the domain, www.VerizonETFclassaction.com, tweeting it at you, making it a comment page until some ambulance chasing attorney decides to make it a class action case.  I couldn't care less about the money as much as Im demanding FAIR customer service to customers like myself that dealing with your nonchalant bullying.  So I ask you, what do you think is fair at this point?  Contact me directly.  Thanks.

    Well that's several minutes of my life reading this long post that I'll never get back....
    I'll explain somethings to you. 1...This is not a direct message board to a vzw rep or higher who will read your post. 2. Yes, although things that happened to you are unfortunate, YOU have to take ownership of your account. Verizon does not babysit accounts. 3. Also due to high cases of fraud vzw does not allow I phones to billed to consumer (and possibly business) accounts. I never understood why cell phone carriers allowed phones to be billed to the account anyway. If you want or need the phone that bad pay for it like any other customer. If you can't do that and want to "break up" over it, be my guest. However any lines still under contract will be subject to a valid etf owed by yourself. 4. It was well publicized that upgrade dates would be changed going forward from date of said announcement. This was in bill notifications and print media. It's not Verizon fault that you may not receive a paper bill however if you log in your account you can regular see notifications.
    congrats on the baby, sorry for the wet phone (again not a vzw issue)
    See a pattern here?

  • No Longer Grandfathering Unlimited Data Plan

    To say that I am disappointed in Verizon is an understatement. I have been with Verizon for over 15 years and have had the same unlimited plan for as long as I can remember. We were unaware that Verizon would no longer be honoring the existing data plan when upgrading your phone and this policy was not made clear when we purchased a new phone recently. When I noted the change to my account and called Verizon, I was given the standard customer service response “we are changing with the new market trying to keep current for our customers”, which is nonsense. As has been discussed here and all over the internet, Verizon is simply gouging their customers for more money with fewer options. They tried to indicate that other carriers do not offer unlimited and they are keeping up with the competition. The truth is that Verizon was ahead of the curve when they offered their unlimited plans during the infancy of the smartphone and now that they are so popular and commonplace with everyone needing a data plan, they see that they can charge more for less. Most mobile companies did away with the unlimited plans long ago but those of us who grandfathered in, have been elated with our service plans that new customers longed to have. Since then, customers have clamored for unlimited plans and the other providers are coming back around to give the people what they want. Unlimited, not share plans. The thought that Verizon is taking away the very plans that their customers are demanding and their competitors are giving is crazy. Verizon is well aware that their customers are unhappy as you can see by the damage control on these forums. At every turn they are closing and deleting posts and discussions that are addressing this travesty. My family, just like many others I have heard from, will be switching to a carrier with an unlimited data plan when our contracts are up. I will be sad to leave Verizon after all these years.

    If Verizon brought back unlimited the network would be slow and you be back here complaining about that. Try studying up on how things work then come back here and complain. These other companies offer "unlimited" data not unlimited data and you should know this. Frankly you and all the unlimited data people are doing Verizon and the rest of it's customers a favor by leaving. You realize your phones have this thing called wi-fi?
    Sprint already has plenty of complaints about how slow it's network is. And they barely have any 4G out there. Just wait until they have 4G everywhere and they get more customers like you that want to max out their connections.
    Sprint's "unlimited data" plan fine print
    Everything Data Plan:  Includes $10 Premium Data add-on for smartphones (no discounts apply). Sprint Mobile Hotspot (MHS): Optional $19.99 or $49.99 add-on to allow your tablet or compatible phone to provide data usage for other Wi-Fi enabled devices. No discounts apply. Connectivity dependent upon compatibility and speeds may vary.  Includes either 2GB or 6GB of on-network data usage with additional data charges of $0.05/MB. 100 MB or 300 MB off-network data limit is combination of tablet/phone and hotspot usage. Additional off-network data charges for tablets is $0.25/MB. Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network roaming usage in a month exceeds (1) voice: 800 minutes. or a majority of minutes; or (2) data: 300 MBs or a majority of KBs.
    Ok so you are going to have to pay $10 extra PER smartphone on top of the advertised price. You are going to have to pay a minimum of $20 if you want to use hotspot then you only get 2 GB for that $20. And you're limited to 300 MB a month if you are outside a Sprint area. Not to mention you're speeed is limited to a max of 256 kbps. Not to mention not many Sprint areas have 4G so you'll be limited to 3G speeds. Sounds wonderful. Enjoy.

  • $3000  bill!!!!

       Hello, I  have a  billing  issue I need resolved. Last December I upgraded our plan and added another phone. The Verizon associate was helpful, he looked at our plan and decided the  share everything plan was a good  fit. He said the plan had unlimited phone minutes and  unlimited texting. As we started to leave he said ‘’ hold on, you qualify for a free hotspot as part of your upgrade’’.  There was no discussion of hotspot usage limits, so I never gave it another  thought. The hotspot was used by my daughter  for months with no  issues. She took it to school  and evidently several friends tapped into it and then when I got that months  invoice, I saw the large amount , I suspended service, and found out I was looking at a $1800 bill for the first half of the  current month.
                     I have been dealing with  Verizon daily , with mixed success. One fellow named Gerald from Connecticut call center, told me my ignorance of the rules is no excuse  and there was nothing he could do. Another associate discounted $400 and said that the limit of what he could do.  I just paid an additional $553 to avoid  phone service interruption.  I have been with Verizon since 2005, this is the  first time I have had a problem. I was surprised a was NOT given any texts or email making me aware my bill was 500% over its normal amount, not a single word  was  sent to me. But, now that my  bill was past  due,  I get  several texts a  day notifying me I need to pay my bill or else. Another odd thing is when I went to the Verizon store for new phone charger, I could not put it on my account I had to pay for it there and then, but when my phone goes a thousand dollars over the normal amount , I all the sudden have unlimited credit.Please consider eliminating the two month overages this time, it wont happen again. Thanks
                      Anyone know a email address I can send my letter to at Verizon?,  or how I cant  get someone to listen to me at Verizon?

    Just to play Devils Advocate, sometimes people go on exactly what is said to them.  From what's been said, the associate said the customer qualified for free hot spot.  Now hot spot on Share Everything is free within the limits of the data allotment. This is what the associate meant but having dealt with store employees, this probably wasn't said.
    Being this guy has been around for a while and considering how little Verizon pays for data, they could easily make an exception and waive the charge.  Verizon made $2 billion  (with a B) in profit last quarter.
    Waiving this charge won't break the bank.
    Instead, in true Verizon fashion, they want this guy to pay for an honest mistake, get a foul taste in his mouth, and then leave Verizon once his agreement lapses.
    This is typical Verizon customer service.

  • IPhone 4 Not working on iOS 7

    Hi there. got updated my iPhone 4 today to iOS 7 from iOS 6.1.3. But now,after update, my phone is soooo slow.. incredibly slow, it lagg during the calls, and now the microphone is not working lol . is it iOS 7 or hardware problem?

    I do not use tethering, so I could not answer that question. The best I can do is provide you with that support document which is for troubleshooting Personal Hotspot. To my knowledge, and remembering what I have read in other posts, I am of the understanding that you have to activate the hotspot first. I don't know that you pair the two devices until after hotspot is active. Here are the only two other support documents I'm aware of for Hotspot usage. Maybe they will help. This one is about understanding Hotspot http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4517 and this is about system requirements. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3574

  • Want to backup a Seagate Wireless Plus to my Time Capsule via Time Machine

    Hi,
    I currently have my macbook and an external drive with movies backed up via time machine to a Time Capsule.  I want to replace the storage device with a Seagate wireless plus in order to both store and stream data with other platforms in the house.  I still want to regularily back up this wireless storage device to Time Capsule as a safety net.  Can I do this wirelessly or does the new Seagate drive need to be physically connected to my Mac or to the USB port on the TC?  I don't want it to be part of the TC, I just want it to be a disk available for back up to the TC.

    Have a long hard think about this.
    Reading the review of the seagate, the problems with using a wireless device like this are great..
    This device is trying to be a network device.. that is the only way you can connect to wireless.. but at the same time, provide some access to the internet.
    Wireless on your computers/idevices cannot connect to two wireless AP's at the same time.. That makes the Seagate useless.
    Read the review. http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/seagate/wireless_plus_1tb_hard_drive/457705 /
    What it is apparently doing is providing a link to your main wireless router.. ie the TC.. so you can have internet at the same time.. but note.. this is extremely slow.. as noted in the review.. the internet speed is really poor due to the lack of proper networking. You are using a box which is effectively a hotspot.. but is linked by wireless to your main router.. If you want a definition of how NOT to use wireless in a network this is it.
    Without ethernet connection forget it. To simply have a wireless hotspot to carry around with you.. IMHO there are lower cost and superior ways.. since wireless is not of much use and will be slow.. plug a 2.5" drive directly into your computer. Or use cloud services with a 3G or 4G modem or tether to your phone. Don't forget you can carry around a pretty big store of files now in SD cards.
    I also like the idea of being able to take the wireless portable drive wtih me so I can edit photos or view photos from my other laptop on the road.
    So you cannot plug the USB drive into the other machine?? Wireless hotspot usage without 3G connection for on road seems to be an expense for not much gain.. but of course if you want it for this great.. just don't expect to put it into the network easily other than by USB. And for that to work I would need to study the specs more closely.. but if you cannot format it HFS+ don't bother. Using iphoto on non-HFS+ drives is not recommended.
    If I go with a NAS drive - I can connect that to the TC for connectivity, but then how to incorporate the data on that NAS drive onto the TC as part of the backup.
    CCC is $40 software.. it will do whatever you like.
    but losing the photos and home videos would be:(
    You must be very careful with iphoto library.. and videos more than likely.
    iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
    iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
    This article states..
    It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
    You are playing with fire using the Seagate to edit iphoto library.. and it is important you realise the risk.

  • HT204400 Can I use my iPads personal hot spot as my network for my Apple TV

    I was just wondering if I can use my iPad minis personal hotspot as my apple tv2's network???

    If you were just using the Personal Hotspot like a small wifi router to transfer data from computer/iPad/iPhone to AppleTV I had always assumed it would not incur any 3G usage charge (except for tiny amounts for authorisation of protected content playback which as to be authorised via internet for playback).
    There was a poster some months ago however who suggested they were getting stung for data used technically over a LAN by their phone company - maybe it was user error, maybe not but probably wise to check the small print in any mobile contracts relating to hotspot usage.

  • Iphone 4 - will use damge the phone?

    I just bought an iPhone 4 yesterday, from a UK based 3 store on a contract with 5000mins talk time and 15GB+ internet (personal hotspot usage included).
    I rang the 3 mobile support line this morning (about something else) - and they inform me that if the phone is used at this level (i.e. all the calls and internet used) then the phone will be damaged by the excessive use - and since the warranty is only for 1 year - then it is likely to fail before the 2 years contract has expired.
    Does anyone have any opions on whether use will cause the phone to fail?
    Any experience on whether the iPhone 4 is able to stand up to heavy useage?
    Thanks
    K.J.Smith

    That's absolutely ridiculous! You cannot "overuse" an iPhone. Whoever told you that should be fired.

  • IPhone 5 as a hot spot?

    Ok, so my wife and I have always used the Android systems for our smart phones.  We each have the internet package on our phones and until recently, we both had the hot spot on our phones.  Recently, my wife updated to the iPhone 5, and we can't figure out how to make it work as a hot spot.  Please help!!  We need internet at the house for the kids for school, and that is how our tablets and computer access the internet.  i work as a FF and work 24hrs shifts, so my phone is not always available.  How do we fix this??

    hotspot its under general, cellular, then scroll down and it will say personal hotspot.  I do believe unless you have a qualifying plan the hotspot use must be active from verizon. I pay $20 for 2 GB of hotspot usage.  Good Luck
