Housework

In Microsoft Windows XP there are a couple of programs that I used to run from time to time to keep my system clutter free. Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter and on the odd occasion Scan Disk.
Is there such things on a Mac and if so when do I need to run them?
You can probably tell from my question I am very mew to this Mac thing and this is only my second day with one.
Thanks.

Hi djr15sg,
Along with these other excellent advices and links, read my updated tip below and you should be perfect.
Matthew (and +richmon),
"defragging in OS X is not normally necessary and is not recommended by the vast majority of Mac experts."
Along with the Apple KB article (About disk optimization with Mac OS X), have a read also of
(kernelthread.com) Fragmentation in HFS Plus Volumes
(TidBITS) Optimizing Disks Is a Waste of Time
As you can see, defragging a Mac OS X can also defeat the system's own file location on the hard drive that it does in order to optimize performance.
Matthew,
"The maintenance scripts now appear to be run regularly no matter whether you turn your Mac off at night or not (someone please correct me on this if I'm wrong)."
They still don't run at all if you shut down at night. And if you sleep at night, they can run often enough, or not, or even never (the Weekly and the Monthly ones), depending on your sleeping habits. Still not completely automated, still needed to run them manually once or twice a month.
See those three links (still valid in 10.4.4):

-- My updated maintenance tip:
There is not much to do to maintain Mac OS X, as pretty much everything is done automatically in the background, even most of the file defragmentation.
More than maintaining, it is about preventing file corruption, that doesn't happen too often anyway.
All you have to do:
- Back up.
- Keep enough free space on the boot volume (10-15% is fine).
- "Repair Permissions" with Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder), after you used Software Update or after you used an Apple application installer. Verify HD's S.M.A.R.T. status in the meantime.
- Run the three nightly Periodic tasks (AKA "cron scripts") — once a month is fine — as they are not yet completely automated (Cocktail, OnyX, TinkerToolSystem, Yasu...)
More prudent:
Before an OS Update or Upgrade,
- Disconnect all periphericals.
- Run a "Disk Repair" with Disk Utility from the install DVD.
- Much better: rebuild Directory with DiskWarrior.
- You can also clean all (each user separately) account's User, Browsers and Fonts caches (Cocktail, OnyX, TinkerToolSystem, Yasu...), and
- Check for corrupted Preferences (Preferential Treatment).
Software:
In theory we should not need any extra utility, as we already have Terminal and Disk Utility.
But some small applications like Yasu, TinkerTool System, OnyX or Cocktail for example, offer a nice, friendly GUI to many useful Terminal commands.
File defragmentation is not really needed in OS X
— Even (very rarely needed) free space defragmentation is more risky than a simple (and quite fast since Tiger) OS reinstallation —
but DiskWarrior has a very good approach of rebuilding the Directory.
- Read the Readme and Help files, and do not run a task if you don't know what it does.
- Do not install an application before you know how to uninstall it.
(example Anacron or Macaroni: they work well but redundant and about uninstall (???), or some Microsoft software that too often gets us used to unnecessarily give our admin password...)
- Software Updates: no hurry! Do not download too much at a time, install the OS updates separately, and note that there is (in menu Update) an option "Update and Keep Package" that can fit to your backup strategy.

  • What upkeep/housework do I need to do on my Macbook...

Sorry, not sure what the right term is for it..
Just bought my 1st mac.. getting used to it and loving it. What sort of upkeep do you need to do to it if any.. For example on my pc I was always told its good to run the scan disk scan every now and then, and defrag it etc.
Is there anything similar I should do with my mac to keep it running sweet?
Its about 3 weeks old now and after adding photoshop and other bits its a bit slower to start up.
Also.. although peeps say there are not many viruses/spyware for the macs do people still use something to protect them? Anything to recommend?
As I said, I'm new to this! Thanks for any help you can give its all greatfuly received!

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • How do I rename voice memos that were on iPhone 4 and are now on iPhone 5s

Hi - I've got a hold load of voice memos that were on my iPhone 4 which I did not label at the time.  Now I'm trying to do some housework on my 5s and would like to label said memos but I can't.  Any ideas please?  Many thanks.

You can email it to yourself by opening the conversation, tap Edit, tap the voice memo, tap Forward, choose your email address from your contact.  You can open this on your computer and the attachment should play in Quicktime.

  • Is there a way to put music (mp3) from my PC onto my iPhone (5c) without having to duplicate that music by adding it to the iTunes Library?

Greetings all, I am a brand new iPhone owner (my first smartphone in fact) and am very sad that I don't love my new device as much as I was beginning to.  I've come into the Apple family with open eyes and heart, but I am heartbroken and mortified and what I've been learning this morning.  I just spent five hours (no exaggeration) reading forums, downloading iTunes (which I don't really think I want, I am used to WMP and much more accustomed to it), downloading and installing an update, learning that certain options which were recommended are now gone unless you use secret commands (want to Add Folder to Library?  Well, too bad!  Unless you know the secret Ctrl-B handshake.  Hope you didn't just spend tons of time adding items file by file before you learned that (by scouring the obscure forums for that information, since it's not common knowledge or readily accessible in iTunes now)!).  Apologies for the sarcastic tone, still very frustrated with the whole process.  I've seen support messages directing people to support pages with QuickTime videos;  QuickTime doesn't install easily or quickly or work properly on my PC (perhaps I need to work with it more, buuuut...), it's all just seeming so....proprietary.
Is it really the way this works that I have to duplicate all of the music that is currently on my hard drive not just once but twice, such that I need to have it 1) on my hard drive in my music folder where it has always been (so that I can play it how I am used to, using WMP), 2) copied to my iTunes Library and then 3) "Synced" (whatever this really means...still learning obviously) / copied onto my iPhone?  Thus taking up twice the space on my hard drive that it needs to?
There's really no way to simply have the phone take it from my hard drive?  Apple seriously needs it to not only be existent on my pc, but duplicated into the iTunes Library (which is really just another folder, right?) in order to allow it to be put onto my iPhone?
Please please please tell me I am misunderstanding how this works.  I really genuinely do want to love my iPhone and get accustomed to how it and the software it needs works, but this has been frankly a nightmare and has had me wishing for brief moments that I had gone with something more PC friendly.  Please just tell me that it gets better, that you can have a PC that you use, and have an iPhone that you use and marry the two happily once you get used to the way to do that.

    Okay.
You are misunderstanding how this works.
When you add songs to your iTunes Library, all you are in fact doing is telling iTunes where (on your computer) to find the music. iTunes does not create additional versions of your music (see * below). iTunes is a database (or catalogue) - it simply lists your music and knows where it is so that it can copy it to your iPod.
Synced - synchronise... to make as one, to make the same as each other. Well, that's what my dictionary tells me anyway. To make iTunes and the iPhone the same, to have the same music etc. on or in each. (Subject to your preferences.)

Okay, I'l tell you that too.
It gets better. You can have a PC that you use, and have an iPhone that you use - and marry the two together blah blah blah.
Now that you have iTunes installed, at least you've got that far, although I can't quite imagine how it managed to take five hours. (You would have all these same issues if you were moving from iPhone to any non-Apple product.)
Secret menus, (CTRL+B etc.) - yes, there have been some very odd moves with all this "hiding menus" nonsense. But with the help of useful contibutors to these discussions, you will find iTunes easy. There are however, so many ways to configure iTunes, that everyone will tell you that everyone else's method is wrong.
    So let's start with basics:
    Once iTunes is set the way you want to view it, all you will need to do is add music to your iTunes Library, either by;
putting a CD into your computer's CD drive, and telling iTunes to import the CD. iTunes will make a digital copy, put it in a folder (in the iTunes Media folder) and list the album in your iTunes
buying music from the iTunes Store. The store will download the music to your Library.
Buying music from other sources. For example Amazon. Here in the UK, Amazon have a downloader which will download any purchases, place them in an Amazon folder and add them to your iTunes Library
Add other digital files by using the Add Folder to Library. (I can make sure you can easily find that, if you wish.)
Then - you can add songs to Playlists - if you wish. You do not have to add music to Playlists. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
Then - connect your iPhone to the computer, and let iTunes perform a Sync.
Your first ever Sync will need a little bit of configuration. A Sync will copy the new songs to your iPhone. It will also transfer back to your iTunes Library:
any songs purchased, on the iPhone, directly from the iTunes Store.
any apps purchased, on the iPhone, from the iTunes Store.
Play Counts. The number of times a song has been played, on the iPhone, since the last Sync.
Last Played date and time. You won't believe how useful this feature can be.
    HydroThunder wrote:
There's really no way to simply have the phone take it from my hard drive?
That is precisely what iTunes is for - it's exactly what it does and how is does it. By the way, also don't let anyone tell you that you should use Manual Management to anage your iPhone. No one with any sense would use Manual Management. Why do housework, when iTunes can do it for you?
    * There is one tiny issue in all this. If you leave your music where it is now, it may make it slightly harder for you to transfer all your music to another computer anytime in the future because it will be in various different palces on your current computer. There is a setting in iTunes to "copy files to the iTunes Media folder when adding to library", which will duplicate songs, but that's so that you can store all your music in one parent folder for easy transfer to another computer. Your choice. If you take it, once it's done, you could then delete the older copies in the other storage locations.
Of course, if you transfer all your media, files, documents to the new compurer, it shouldn't be any hassle really.
As for WMP. While you are used to it, now that you have an iPhone, why not try playing music in iTunes? It's really not that bad.
So - you tell me what point you have reached and what other information you need to help you with iTunes, what views you want in your iTunes Library. There are lots of ways to vieww your Library! You only need to tell us how you like to look at things, by albums with artwork, by a sonsg list but with the option of looking at albums, or Last played. On and On it goes!
I may be a bit biased in my choice of views, but I can still help you get the best out of iTunes. It really is a fantastic piece of software, despite the little annoying things Apple put into it.

  • How do I connect to radio stations for free automatic afternoon or evening of my favorite music? Do I  forget about it on laptop, and plan to only enjoy radio music off my iMac desktop??

Radio streaming is my preferred music system on desktop Mac OSX, but new birthday MacBook Pro does not understand this. So, I send this message from laptop, while listening to desktop. Please tell me how to get radio station lists on this laptop. • Bluetooth headphone won't play music

I just got an iPhone-4s. I connected it to my Motorola S9 bluetooth headphone. I hear Siri through the headphones, but I cannot figure out how to get my music or my audiobooks to play through the headphones. With my iPhone-3gs, music and audiobook always played automatically through these headphones.
What do I need to do to get my music and audiobooks to play through my connected bluetooth headphones? I really like the cordfree option, as I listen to books while I do housework and tend to snag a cord on items as I work. I know I'm connected, as Siri comes through the headphones loud and clear.

Here are the bluetooth profiles for my headphone:

  • How to convince my parents to get a macbook air or pro?

    Hello, guys
Today I started getting intrested to buy a new macbook pro or air for myself since I am a programmer and I love programming and all my school work and homework is on my laptop. I already own a macbook but it's the old white one the 2009 Edition. The mouse stopped working since yesterday and it began to get so laggy I'm getting frustrated. I got intrested because my grandma got a macbook pro and she loved it. My grandpa (from my mom's side) got a macbook pro retina display late 2013 Edition for my cousin (from my dads side). I got soo intrested but no one is helping me. I still did not start asking my mom. Can you please help me.

You started your post with "Today I started getting intrested to buy a new macbook pro or air for myself..." but you finished your post by saying "...but no one is helping me. I still did not start asking my mom. Can you please help me." So you are not getting one for yourself, you want someone else to get you one.
Get some part time work, help your mom as much as possible doing chores without her having to ask, contribute to the housework. Save some money and offer to pay 1/2 the cost. Maybe then she will be receptive to helping you out.
But then again, if money is not an issue, jsut ask her. If I were her, I'd get you a cheaper Windows computer after you came up with some of your own money

  • Using Paralles or bootcamp...question...

I've been thinking of installing Paralles or Bootcamp on my MBP. I was thinking...is there a way to totally disable internet connection when switching to PC mode? I don't want to risk getting viruses.
    Thanks

    First..personally I use VMWare Fusion...
Just run XP with with AVGFree, a free virus and spyware program. I have been using it for many years and have yet to get any type of virus. I am a Network Engineer with CCNA/MCSE certs and fellow employees are always bringing their PC's in for me to fix/clean etc. The only time I see issues are when people have no virus/spyware or outdated ones. Just a tiny bit of housework can keep a PC running as good as a mac. Just stay away from McAfee or Norton...resource hogs that are almost as bad as what they say they are trying to protect.

  • Drag and drop to my clipboard

    Hi
Is it possible to drag and drop not to the system clipboard but to an instance of clipboared i have created? How?
    TIA
    Noam

The first ever Sync of 12,000 songs to an empty iPod will take a while, but it shouldn't take two days.
Once all 12,000 songs have been Synced to the iPod, subsequent changes to just one album will result in a very short Sync time. That Sync will include:
the change to that one album
play counts on iPod updated into your iTunes Library
Smart Playlists updated: some complex Smart Playlists are not always updated by the iPod but have to wait for a Sync with the Library.
housework - in other words, behind the scenes tasks that we don't need to see.
Those subsequent Syncs do not sync every single song every time.
So, stick with Syncing. If the first Sync of all your songs is taking too long, try syncing part of the Library (say one or two genres) the first time, a further part the second time and so on. After all, with a Library that large, manually managing the iPod will be a source of torture.

  • Help with Cable

I'm sure this has been asked before but I trawled through the search results and got confused. So I'm thick I know that but could I please have an answer in very simple terms. I have an iPod Touch 16gb. I have a stereo; and also an entertainment system that connects to my TV and DVD Player. I want to be able to connect the iPod to the stereo and the entertainment system (obviously not at the same time lol). I don't care about video at this stage just stereo sound. I've trawled Apple and also a local auction site and there seem to be two different types of cable - those that plug in from the dock port of the iPod to the stereo ports and those that plug in from the headphone jack of the iPod to the stereo ports. Which one do I get please? I don't want the most expensive, just a simple cable so I can listen to my music out in the garage when I'm doing weights or to the entertainment system in the lounge when I'm cooking or doing housework. I would be most grateful if someone could help - thanks in advance

The reason that you're confused is because there's two kinds of port that can be used on the telly. Now, we can't answer your question because we don't know which port that you're television support. If you can find the manual of your telly that will be great. Most television should support S-video and composite. Once you know then buy the corresponding one.

  • Using To Do lists for repetetive tasks to appear on monthly calendar?

I would like to format a household zone cleaning schedule (aka "FlyLady" for those familiar) and use iCal in place of the printed lists or 18 daily emails her system currently sends.
How do I use the To Do list feature in iCal and attach them to the date the tasks are due then set them as a repeating appointment? I know how to set an appointment to repeat, but can I set a To Do as a repeat appointment?
For example: If I am working in Zone 1 (Week one of the month) is kitchen and front porch has 12 points of deep cleaning in those area in addition to the daily tasks of each day of the week (Mon is paperwork & misc, Tues is Groceries & errands, Wed is regular housework, etc.
All of this is on printed sheets in a binder and I would like to get it into iCal, but not clutter up my monthly view. It would be idea to put my To Do feature to it's best use.
Thanks you so much for any assistance.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by the "keys" - maybe menu

You've used the DW menus which are not recommended for a
    number of reasons.
If you are going to do more websites you'll get a number of

Image Viewer - sorry, I've never used it. I don't think in
    fact that it *is*
widely used. Hopefully somebody here can help with this. On

Sorry I haven't been able to help a lot with this one! Post

  • Desktop files etc. won't open after botched software install

    Dear New Best Friends:
    (a) My new mac mini is just up and running since yesterday. I'm not new to Mac but AM new to setting up, installing, etc., and to being the one responsible. (My brother-in-law used to do everything for me, but he moved, the heartless you-know-what.) Anyway, after a few false starts, a "mini" nervous breakdown and one complete reinstall, things were humming. I was so happy with the Mini -- and, I admit it, with myself. But pride goeth before a (downloading) fall...
    (b) Since I successfully installed an old copy of MS Office 2001 (after installing OS 9), I decided I could be trusted to install a old copy of Photoshop 5.0 (used previously on my G3/OS 9.2). The disc icon appeared on the desktop, but nothing happened when I clicked it. So, freaking idiot that I am, I remembered recently reading about the "drag to the hard-drive" Mac method of installation...
    (c) I dragged it, alright, and it disappeared into that cute little hard-drive icon... and, just like that, i-life as I knew it was over. (Remember when Kevin Bacon flips that fateful switch on board Apollo 13? Everything had been going so well...) Now, none of the desktop icons -- the hard-drive, the printer, various Word files and folders -- will open. (They highlight with one click but don't do anything with 2 clicks.) I can't seem to get into them any other way, either, but again, I'm new to OS X, and to being the one in charge. SO, I have no access to MS Office, or to my Word documents or to numerous folders of art and photos.
    (d) I've searched as best I know how through these Discussions for a similar problem but have had no luck. I've never posted to a forum in my life, but I've admired you all from afar. (I figured out what display to buy from reading here.) I hope I am posting this right; I don't really know how this topic/thread stuff works. (Be gentle on me -- and educate me --if I'm in the wrong place.)
And finally, MY QUESTION: Can my downloading error be reversed?
Thanks so much in advance (you deserve much more just for reading this). Peace and love!

It's happened again. Desktop icon freeze.
Add to that frustration the fact that I just described the chain of events in long detail, and when I posted it earlier this morning, I got an Apple Discussions alert that they're, oh, doing some housework or something, and anyway, the posting got lost and only my computer info was transmitted (which was no longer accurate, because I did NOT reinstall Classic OS 9 after performing a complete erase and install Sunday.....)
So let me start over, outliningg this depressing chain of events:
After successful OS X reinstall mentioned in previous post, I:
    --Re-installed AOL, setting aol preferences
--Responded to iTunes prompt to download newest version; downloaded and left icon on desktop for later install
--Did first Apple Software Update check (remember, have only had this Mini a few days); it told me I needed about ten or eleven updates. I selected eight of them, notably OS X. Figured that getting the latest stuff would, you know, eliminate the glitch that caused first meltdown. Ha. (Downloading of the 8 selected updates took --get ready-- eleven hours and 49 minutes; I use AOL dial-up. In those hours, my internet loading was very slow on both aol and safari, but I figured that was because of downloading going on.)
--Opened desktop Hard Drive icon numerous times throughout day to set preferences, look around apps, and read cute little tutorials about how fun it is to use the Mini .
--Created first Text document; placed icon on desktop.
--Twelve-hour download extravaganza finally ended. Expected to have to install stuff, but I gather it does that automatically in these Apple software updates?
--Noticed that even though downloading was complete, internet loading was still slow; hmmmm; figured AOL was having one of its numerous bad days.
--Double-clicked the iTunes installer desktop icon mentioned above, and installed the newest version.
--May have re-calibrated my display afterwards, or may have been just before. (It's a new Dell 1704 FPT, if that makes any difference. Maybe Michael Dell is sabotaging Steve J.)
--Put Mini to sleep; he and I had had a hard couple of days...
--Put myself to sleep; dreamed of Fun Mini Days Just Ahead.
--Woke up this morning like it was Christmas, excited to begin new and improved life with Mini. Woke Mini. Double-clicked Hard Drive icon. NOTHING. Double-clicked Text icon. Nothing. Same problem. Different day. (Only this time, it IS a weekday, per previous posts...)
--Got online, went to Discussions, read AndyO's recommendation about Finder, File, find p.list, trash it, etc. Did so.
--Double-clicked Text document icon. IT OPENED. Wow! Wanted to buy AndyO a NanO.
--Double-clicked Hard Drive icon. NOTHING. Gulp.
--Closed Text document. Double-clicked Hard Drive icon again. Nothing.
--Double-clicked Text icon. This time, Nothing.
    --Re-performed p.list steps. Didn't work this time.....
Please note major differences between this freeze and the last:
    (1) Classic OS 9 wasn't installed this time. (So neither was MS Office 2001, of course, nor any old software.)
    (2) Updated ("improved"!) OS X is running, along with updated QuickTime and other Apple-recommended updates.
    (3) New version of iTunes is installed.
But in spite of these differences, the problem's effect is the same.
One of AndyO's messages (2.1.1.1?) said something to the effect that if I encounter such problems again there are troubleshooting steps I can take to identify the specific cause and resolve it.
Please, dear readers, what are those steps? I am discouraged, and not just a little worried.

  • Drop Down Menu for BSPs

    Hello,
I´m a student and I have to do a housework concerning ABAP programming. I have to create a database for employes which runs on BSP. For this I created a normal table with different topics like name, surname, title etc. For topics like "Titles" (e.g. Doctor, B.Sc.) I created a value table. But now, I have a problem. As I have to do the whole thing on BSPs, I cannot simply transfer value table. For the BSP I need a kind of dropdown-menu which shows the different titles to select.
But I have no idea how to do this...
    Can you help me?
    Thanks in advance!!!

    Hi Andi,
    welcome to SDN.
There is a BSP forum where you should put this question.
Look at the BSP sample applications to see how to do this. They are SBSPEXT_HTMLB, SBSPEXT_PHTMLB and SBSPEXT_XHTMLB.
Anyway, here is a simple example how to populate a dropdown listbox in BSP.
    <%@page language="abap" %>
    <%@extension name="htmlb" prefix="htmlb" %>
    <%
      data: lt_ddtab type scarr_tab.
select * from scarr into table lt_ddtab.
    %>
    <htmlb:content design="design2003" >
      <htmlb:page title="DDListBoxtest" >
        <htmlb:form>
          <htmlb:dropdownListBox id                = "ddtest"
                                 table             = "<%= lt_ddtab %>"
                                 nameOfKeyColumn   = "CARRID"
                                 nameOfValueColumn = "CARRNAME" />
        </htmlb:form>
      </htmlb:page>
    </htmlb:content>
The online help for the dropdownListBox element shows how to perform event handling.
    Cheers

  • Error 1456 when trying to remote to Zfd Agent 6.5

We are upgrading from ZEN 3.2 sp3. Our clients were upgraded from 4.83
sp1 to 4.90 sp2, but as we load the 6.5 Zfd Agent we are finding a number
of them are lossing remote-ablilty from ConsoleOne 1.3.6d w/6.5 snap-ins.
    we get the error 1456:..
TID 10091097 says this was fixed with ZENWSREG.DLL dated 2/17/04. We are
running ver 6.5.1.0 dated 1/24/05 and the problem still occurs. I have
found uninstalling the Remomte Management from the General tab under Local
Area Connection fixes this most of the time, however not always.
Does anyone have a silver bullet solution for this problem?
We are not using a Middle Tier Server.
    Thanks.

    >I have anumber of TIDs on this issue. I tested Friday and the one thing
that looks promising is to delete the workstation object, have the PC
reboot. Uninstalling the Remote management service does work but it is
not permenent. TIDs 10093784 and 10091097 were enlighting. I was not told
of such problems between ZEN 3.2 and 6.5. It would appear that
integrating the client within Windows, Novell has fallen victum to Windows
    compatibility traps.
With all the problems I've seen in this upgrade I would caution Novell to
do a lot more testing. And maybe invest in a Microsoft Active Directory
    domain for thier test lab.
Hmmm..there should be nothing to uninstall under LAn connection.
