In case you haven�t seen this, here is what Arnold, Gosling and Holmes say in "The Java Programming Language" 12.4 Interacting with the Garbage Collector.
�The garbage collector may not be able to free any additional memory when Runtime.gc is invoked. There may be no garbage to collect, and not all garbage collectors can find collectable objects on demand. So invoking the garbage collector may have no effect whatsoever. However, before creating a large number of objects--especially in a time-critical application that might be affected by garbage-collection overhead--invoking gc may be advisable. Doing so has two potential benefits: you start with as much free memory as possible, and you reduce the likelihood of the garbage collector running during the task.�

    Go in to the perticular method, and click on where used list.That may help.
    Or get into the method in debugging, and press F7. That will take you to the calling point.

  • How to identify that the call to a BAdI is coming from SAPGUI

    Hi All,
    In the current project involving SAPCRM 5.0 (both GUI and PCUI), we need to display a pop-up asking the user whether he would like to go ahead with the changes in both GUI and PCUI.
    The function module 'Popup-to-confirm'  was used in a BAdI implementation and it worked fine in GUI but caused problems in PCUI. So this code was commented out as of now.
    Could you let me know as to how should we differentiate the call being placed to a BAdI is from GUI or from PCUI so that we could ensure that the pop-up gets displaced in GUI atleast as of now and does not get populated/cause errors in PCUI as of now?
    Else please let me know what is the correct way of displaying a pop-up in both GUI and PCUI in CRM 5.0?

    I will like to know if there is a way of calling system command and shell commands in windows without making use of the Runtime Class in java.
    Also when ever i call a system command or shells commands from my java application using the runtime class, it open the a new shell(Command Prompt) before executing the command.

    OK, I can't test on another PC as I don't have access to one, and I really dohope this is the last set of tests incidentally. It worked, then it stopped one day. A complete reformat and clean driver install didn't fix it. Re-seating the card didn't fix it. Seems pretty straight forward to me the card has failed, and I do need it replacing.
    I have however done everything else below as requested. If I select CMSS, I get no output for rear-left/rear-right using channel test. If I select CMSS2, I get output from the front speakers for rear-left/rear-right channels, but nothing from the rear.
    If I configure to 5. and enable CMSS I get output from jacks and 3 (orange & green)of the soundcard in the left headphone earpiece.

    CMSS is an option that allows you to play your audio to all 5. speakers even if you are not playing a true 5. encoded audio file.     3. Go to the CMSS 3D tab and check the box next to "Enable CMSS 3D"
    4. Place a dot next to either CMSS or CMSS2. Whichever sounds better to you.
    It is important to remember that if you do wish to play a 5. encoded file, you will need to turn CMSS off. Otherwise you might not receive each discreet channel.

    Tried all that and still no joy unfortunately. Everything ok except output from rear-left and rear-right.
    Always disable onboard sound nad have just reformatted XP and reinatalled with drivers from creative website, so I know installation is not corrupt and up-to-date. I also had this problem before re-installation of XP, so suspect hardware rather than software failure.
    Have removed all traces of card/drivers and tried again and moved PCI slots with same results.

    Please insert the soundcard on another PCI slot, and make sure it is firmly inserted. Please disable any onboard sound card if available through BIOS.

    Typical, following months of trying to get a replacement remote control cable for my inspire 6. 6700 the 2 rear speakers on the set don't play sounds any more. I have done a clean XP install to ensure no driver corruption, but no difference. It's not the subwoofer as I have a spare, unused sub and that gives the same results.
    I have also checked all cabling, mixer/volume settings and nothing unusual is showing.
    Of course, my audigy 2 card is my guess as the culprit, I can't be positi've though. All other speakers operate perfectly, can even hear background hiss through the rear-left and rear-right speakers which won't play sounds/music/games or anything at all. But when I select "Creative Speaker Settings" to test the channels individually, they don't play a test sound here either.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Dun tink that creative customer support sucks cos I had been dealing with them in the past and I can say that their service are quite gd and fast. If you wanted a refund, I tink you need to contact the store that sells you the product. Dun tink creative will refund you though.

  • How bad can a company be?

    I called BT around mid May. I informed them i was going to move to a new flat in NW2 in June. I told them the flat is being completely renovated and that i wanted to get a phone line. The BT employee on the phone did some checks and confirmed to me there was no active line (which i already knew: i said the flat was being completely renovated). He said i needed to book for a BT engineer to come, that there would be a cost and that i would need to take another 12 months contract. He also said he would cover for the engineer cost if i tenew my broadband with BT for another 12 months. I was reluctant to take another 12 months contract with BT for phone line and broadband because the fiber optic broadband i have been having with BT for the past 15 months was awful (regularly dropped, very slow speed at random times, more than once a week every week for 15 months). But in the end i accepted the offer, agreed to renew Line and brodaband with BT for another 12 months and booked for the BT engineer to come on 12th june. And that's when the nightmare started.
    On 11th june, BT called. They lefta voicemail i could hardly understand then sent a weird sms: "Hello, SHREYA here. I have tried to speak with you today however, couldn't make a contact over the phone. please text back (at your normal rate) and we'll get back to you within 2 hours. We check messages from 8am ? 8.30pm Mon-Fri or 9am-6pm Sat." I had no clue who SHREYA was, considering they didn't even specify which company they work for. But after googling the number on the sms, i found out it was from BT. So i called BT and spoke to an employee who started to confuse me about "system issues". I was wondering "what do system issues have to do with me?"... The BT employee told me her manager would call me back. When the manager called me, he was even more confusing. At the end i asked him only 1 question "is the BT engineer coming on 12 june to set up the Bt line?". He replied "yes, between 07:00 and 13:00".
    On 12 june, because i hadn't received any sms from Bt confirming the time window when the engineer is coming, i called Bt at 10:00. The Bt employee then told me "oh, it's cancelled". I then became very unhappy. I asked "why?". The Bt employee put me on hold and after 5 mun, hung up on me. I called Bt again, spoke to another few people from Bt but nobody was able to tell me why the appointment i booked 3 weeks earlier was cancelled. I was furious: i accepted to take another 12 months contract with Bt for line and broadband and this is how they deal with it.... I logged a complaint on the Bt website. I was told that a case manager would be appointed to help me and i spoke to that case manager today but so far i have had zero meaningful updates as to when the line will be set up. All she told me today is that a new order needs to be logged because there was an internal problem with the one logged 4 weeks ago. She even saud it will be logged tomorrow. I asked "why ligging it tomorrow? Why not today considering i have already been waiting for 4 weeks?" I got no replies to that question...
    4 weeks wasted already, not sure how many more to come, and no commitments as to when i can expect the service. As if moving hoone was not streeful enough, i have to deal with a company like Bt. I have to chase them every single day to get an update, this is so stressful. What a poor level of service.
    How bad can a company be?

    I have 2 lines into my house. One with BT and one with Virgin Media. I placed an order with Bt to take over the Virgin Media line. So BT cancelled my existing BT line which was working perfectly and transferred the Virgin Media line onto the BT line they just cancelled. Then no broadband and no phone. I was told there was a fault on the line! There wasn't before they cancelled the line. I was told it had been fixed, I was told it hadn't been, I was told I would have phone and broadband in 24 hrs. I didn't. I was then told there was still a fault on the line despite an engineer stating unequivocally that there was no fault. I explained to BT that my son has severe learning disabilities and epilepsy and that he stops breathing when he has a seizure and we have to be able to call medics. BT told me to use my mobile phone and that he would not be regarded as a priority case!.
    After another 2 hours on the phone to them today I am told that they have to put in new cables (what was wrong with the existing ones?) and that I might have phone line and broadband by June 26 - 10 days after they were just sopposed to take over a working phone line.
    One would have thought that a telephone company would be able to take over a phone line - just a stretch too far for BT administration.
    The Openreach engineers were very helpful and took extra time to speak to BT when at my house but to no avail.

    Due to time limited, I would like to know how to cooperate the current mail system with Sun Java Commnication Suite 5. I mean I would like to use current mail system (mailscanner + postfix + courier-IMAP + clamav + spamassassin + webmail) and use the outlook connector to connect to Sun Java COMMS 5 to share the calendar, contacts only.
    Right now I have done the testing by using outlook, mac mail, thunderbird to share calendar,contacts via Sun Java COMMS 5 in Centos Linux 5.
    My plan is as following
    1. Sun Java Communication suites 5 server ( I called it comms5 ) will be in DMZ zone and will open the necessary ports in firewall.
    2. I will create more than six sub domain name in Sun Delegate server and the necessary accounts within these domain names.
    3. All messages will be transmitted via Postfix and clients will retrieve from Courier-IMAP
    4. All Clients included other branch offices will use different mail clients to share their calendars, contacts via COMMS5 ( But how will COMMS handle the messages such like invitation ? )
    Any suggestions will appreciate.
    PS: Is it possible to classify the contacts in outlook address book ?
    For example, when user click the receiver, it will show like as following
    GLOBAL ADDRESS BOOK

    Also the use of Outlook Connector with a non-Sun IMAP backend isn't supported, nor is the use of a non-Sun IMAP backend possible with UWC.

    For asynchronous cases, you should adopt the "wait and trigger" principle.  In BPM, you can acheive it by using a timer and an automated activity. Set the timer repeat time to say 15 mins (you should change it as per your business scenario), and then execute / trigger an automated activity, which will call your Bid system to check the state (whether the data entry / specific workflow is over). If the state is completed, (you may check using exclusive choice), move to next step. Else, pass back the control to timer which will again make the process wait. This way the objective could be attained.

    Did you try to debug till the point where the BADI is supposed to get called? You may set a break-point in your Dev system to check the call stack and based on that set break-points in your QA system and see why this is not getting called?
    Also, check all the implementations of the BADI got transported to the QA system. Check if there is any filter on that badi.

    As i don't have any access to the code of the java app i can't prevent it from calling System.exit() when the corresponding window is closed.

    how bad is the Verizon customer service? Well let me tell you. I just got off the phone with from their Finance Department, who called me, and they asked when I would be paying my bill. I answered never. He asked why. I said I had a billing dispute. He asked to go over the bill together (the first rep to do this) having going over the issues and reviewing the notes he said “oh wow”. I informed him that I filed a complaint to the BBB, FTC and FCC and filed a small claims suit against them. He said he understood why. He then said he would unsuspended my 3 lines (I have already disconnected 2 of them) and place my account in a “billing dispute status”. I said thank you. After about 30 minutes I called back when my saw my lines still suspended. Both the finance department and customer service both said the lines were still suspended both blaming the other department as a reason. Got to love the Verizon teamwork. Any suggestions?

    They may have stated over the phone your account was in a "billing dispute status" however you can ONLY do so in writing.

IF YOU DO NOT NOTIFY US IN WRITING OF SUCH DISPUTE WITHIN THE 180-DAY PERIOD, YOU WILL HAVE WAIVED YOUR RIGHT TO DISPUTE THE BILL OR SUCH SERVICE(S) AND TO BRING AN ARBITRATION OR SMALL CLAIMS CASE REGARDING ANY SUCH DISPUTE.
    Simply send in a notice of dispute form. Since you have already filed a "small claims case", I would think it may be unnecessary, though, but it can't hurt to be thorough.

  • Calling System.gc( )

    The method System.gc() initiates the Systems' garbage collector and reclaims all the object references which are no longer used by the program.
    Are there any repercussions associated with calling System.gc() explicitly by a program? Does it affect the program in anyway?
    A practical example is: I had programmed a small chip called TINI (If you are interested you can find more information about it on www.ibutton.com) which had a very small memory footprint but at the same time, it also supported 16 threads at the same time. Now if many threads continuously write data and read data from the local memory of the chip, there is a very likely danger of the program running out of memory (I did not have to worry about this problem in my application since my application was designed to support only 8 client threads at a time).
    But in such cases, is it a good or a bad practice to make explicit calls to System.gc() ? Does this call affect the internal state of the program in any way?

    Memory management is supposed to automatic. You can't
    tune it. Tune your code instead. Well...that is what I had done in my application actually. Since I did not want to use System.gc(), I had carefully designed the code so that the data inputs from all the 8 client threads to the TINI server chip was regulated. But I never got a satisfactory answer as to why the usage of that method is not advised.
    Of course, I always avoid using that but just wanted to know what would go wrong if I did.
