How do I download my free copy of mountain lion. The up-to-date program says my serial is already registered.

I tried to register my name and purchase information with the up-to-date program but the site says my serial number is already registered. So am I already available for the upgrade? Or did some little punk at futureshop rip off my serial number?

  • How do I get my free copy of Mountain Lion?

I'm a very excited Apple customer because I received my MacBook Pro (Retina Display) today! Now that I have it, I would like to download my free copy of Mountain Lion! The only issue is, when I went to the website to enter in the purchase date, etc., I cannot proceed. I bought it online through the Apple Education Store, so I'm wondering (and this may be a simple question), but would that be considered an Apple Reseller (since I bought it through my school) or would the purchase be considered to be through the Apple Online Store? Thanks for helping me with this seemingly simple problem!

Congratulations on a sweet machine! I will eventually upgrade to Mountain Lion, but not until 2 or 3 months have passed to shake out the glitches, etc. that are invariably in a new product with this much complexity.
As to your question, I scanned this "community" yesterday and recall coming upon another Retina owner who was bemoaning the fact that he was still waiting for his email from Apple that would allow him to download his free upgrade to Mt. Lion.
Now, I have not done actual research into your situation, but thought I would pass along my findings of yesterday. Try searching in the forum for related postings. Good luck, and have fun with that Retina display!!

  • How do I redeem my free copy of Mountain Lion?

I purchased a Retina Display MacBook Pro on Monday.  Mountain Lion came out today, and I was told I would receive a free copy.  I went to the Up-To-Date website, and submitted my information as well as my serial number at around 9 this morning.
    Then... crickets.
So... what am I waiting for?  How do I redeem my free copy of Mountain Lion?  Do I need to purchase it and get reimbursed for the charge?
When I enter my serial number into the "check your service and support coverage" page on Apple Support, (https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do) it knows exactly what kind of Mac I have and when it was purchased... how come the Up-To-Date program can't figure that out and give me a redemption code immediately?  I'm excited to upgrade to Mountain Lion... but I'm disappointed by having to wait.

I don't think it's false. Apple received a lot of requests and you will have to wait to have your redeem code. Nothing more, or buy it
Again... I'm not paying for something I was promised for free.  That's ridiculous.  And the marketing that was released was very clear that purchasers of new MacBooks would receive an upgrade to Mountain Lion "as soon as it's available."
It's available.  Apple is unnecessarily waiting to give me what they promised.  "False advertising" may seem like a really negative term, but it's accurate.  I was promised something and it wasn't delivered.

  • How do I install a new copy of Mountain Lion or Lion?

A few years ago, I bought a used Mac Pro and tied it to my Apple account that I had for my iPad. Great. It's got Lion on it.  I cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion so the Apple Store won't let me buy Mountain Lion.
I just bought a used Macbook.  I want to reinstall the OS onto a brand new SSD.  When I boot from a Lion install disk, it gets to the point where it's about to install, then says that I have to use an account that has purchased Lion.  I cannot purchase Lion since it's not available and I cannot purchase Mountain Lion since my Mac Pro cannot upgrade.  I also cannot create a brand new Apple account since the new account has also not purchased yet.
How do I go about installing?  Turning off Wi-Fi makes it complain that it needs to communicate to the Apple Store so that's a no-go as well.

I'm in a similar bind, except complicated by the fact that I don't understand nor can I find the mysterious "Recovery HD" or "Boot Partition".
Sorry, my bad.  I'm brand new to Lion and Intel Macs, but not to Macs.  I've been using Macs since 1986, and my most advanced Mac until recently was a PPC G5 Quad
The similarities with the OP are that I have just bought a Mac Pro 1,1 (original 2006 model, actually built in September of 2007).  It came with Lion pre-installed but no install media (flash drive), and I know that it couldn't have possibly shipped with Lion in 2007.
I have not been able to find a way to buy Lion either, and the machine cannot run Mountain Lion.
Where I am at a worst disadvantage, is that I haven't been able to wrap my mind around this mysterious "Boot Partition" and Recovery HD concepts.
I see nothing in the Finder or Disk Utility that remote resembles another volume or partition other than the boot drive.  Yet System Profiler shows me this under Serial–ATA:

The text in bold maroon letters is what has me baffled.
I've Googled and conducted Forum searches for 48 hours and can't get my head around this.
Do I have such a boot partition or Recovery Disk or not?
If I do, how and where do I find it and access it?
If I dont, what is the System Profiler telling me under Serial-SATA?
How and where can I buy a legitimate copy of OS X Lion that I can legally install on my otherwise admirable performing G5 Quad 2.66 GHz with 13 GB of RAM?
I would be most grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction,
    Thanks in advance.

  • Signed up for my free copy of Mountain Lion yesterday but still haven't received an email with a code - do you think it is because Apple is having an issue with having sent out invalid codes?

On the webpage it says you must prove your purchase with a copy of your receipt but it never gave me the option to attach it to the request so I am thinking they are unable to verify my MacBook was purchased after 6/11. Also, when I went to re-request my free copy of ML it said my Serial Number was already redeemed.  Should I contact support or just wait it out?

I think it is all messed up. Many of us are in the same boat. I'm patiently waiting to hear something from Apple.

  • How do I download Firefox onto new iMac/Mountain Lion

won't allow me to use/open download from Mozilla-
but cannot find 'app' in the Apple mac store
    please advise. thanks

One of the new features of Mountain Lion - have you checked your settings in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General Tab > if you have anything checked other than 'anywhere', you can only open apps downloaded outside of the app store by hitting the Control key while double clicking the installer icon.

  • Where do I input my code for redeeming free copy of Mountain Lion? I have received it (with this secure pdf file) but in Mac App Store see only function "Buy". Where do I input this code to get my free copy?

Anyone also knows why this update is so ridiculously weird? Snap your bill, send us picture - looks so in contrary to Apple's core principle of simplicity! I'm very disappointed.

My guess would be to open the AppStore, then in the QuickLinks panel on the right of the first screen you should be able to choose Redeem to redeem a code.

  • I filled out my info for my free copy of mountain lion almost 24 hours ago and still have not received conformation email. Whats up?

Has this happened to anyone else too?

Woke up this morning hoping to have the code, but nope... still hasn't come. Just like you, I submitted my original request 25 hours ago now, and have yet to hear ANYTHING from Apple.
I'm disappointed that the only answer I get is an AppleCare representative telling me to read the terms and conditions of requesting and then reading it and saying that it says processing will take up to 24 hours.
I expected better execution of this up-to-date program from Apple. I'm guessing it has to do with the botched codes going out that are showing up as already used.
Let's hope it will be today!

  • Download error; cannot redownload OSX Mountain Lion

I recently bought a MacBook Air, and I am trying to download and install my free copy of Mountain Lion. I started downloading it, and at one point the download stopped, and it says an error has occured in the app store. In my purchases, the button to restart the download is just a blank grey button, and I cannot restart the download. Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

Restart and see if the download continues. If not get in touch with support.
