How do i export to pro res?

Hi All,
I'm a complete novice with FCPX and have basically just figured it out as i go along. I honestly don't understand all this transcoding / compression stuff. I import media optimized and go from there.
I usually just use the share to vimeo button or share master file.
Anyway, i had to make a bunch of videos for someone last week and i've delevered all the .mov files. They have now asked for them in pro res for higher quality.
I can't figure out how to do this, and i've read a ton of threads / forums and watched some videos but they're all about compression/transcoding.
I'm on a real time crunch so kind of losing my mind about this.
Is it even possible to export as pro res? Does that even exist as an action?
If so, can anyone please talk me through in idiot terms how to make this happen?
Thank you so much in advance!!
Storme

You should be prepared, depending on the resolution and lenght of the original media, for files that might challenge any storage transfer device other than a disk drive.

  • Need to export MAC PRO RES HQ footage out of FCP and into premiere friendly format

Ive been forced to switch platforms mid project (mac -> PC) and luckily have obtained picture lock so theres no loss to having lost my FCP project. The problem has been that when i went to load my footage into premiere or to even play the files with VLC nothing worked, and i discovered that it was infact the codec, which was a MAC only PRO RES HQ codec, so now i need to re-export my footage out of FCP into a windows usuable format.
What is the best codec/format to use that will maintain the original quality? Filesize is not an issue.

As Jim mentioned, you'd have to use an uncompressed codec--probably QuickTime Animation, as I'm not sure you can encode to an uncompressed AVI on the Mac.
You might also consider something like
Sheer Video. It's a QuickTime codec for both Mac and PC. You'd have to purchase the Mac encoder component, and I think you could then get the free playback component on the PC--though you might actually have to buy the PC version, too. There's also Digital Anarchy's
Microcosm. Both of these codecs are perceptually lossless, but offer far greater compression ratios (and manageability) than Animation. Not saying either is the best option, but they are options, nonetheless.

  • Export Apple Pro Res HQ with CS5.5?

I have Premiere CS5 on mac and win7 PC.
My Mac can export to Apple Pro Res HQ
    But my PC can't.
Is there a way I can add Apple Pro Res HQ codec to the export list?
The reason I need it is that all the networks want that codec.
    Thanks in advance

Hopefully the industry will change a bit in the commercial world seeing final pro x is so useless.

  • FCX transcoding media is only in apple pro res 422? how to choose proper apple pro res format

I have imported some footage shot witha dslr camera in FCX [(1280 × 720, H.264, AAC, HD (1-1-1)], I have immediately transcoded in high quality to have better format to edit with, my question is  can I choose other apple pro res (non for this case) quality format, (422 high quality or 4444) to convert into?
whats is the the proper apple pro res format to choose relating any codec?

So now what I do is, I use Final Cut Pro 7 to ingest and transcode the footage. The rest in Final Cut Pro X. Is there any better solution?
Just to throw another 2¢ into this.
    Agree with what AndyNick
says about PR HQ being overkill for footage originally shot in 4:2:0. – with the possible exception that in some cases graphics and the grading of those might  benefit.
If storage isn't an issue – and if your computers are beefy enough to push these big files around – then it''s hard to see any downside, if you decide to use the HQ flavor. In which case, I would say there is no better solution than using the Log & Transfer function of FCP7 for the transcode. It could also be done in Compressor (slower) or MPEG Streamclip (faster), but in neither case would it give you the combination of control and speed as FCP 7 L&T.
    Good luck.

  • How do I export Premier Pro CS6 files for use with Final Cut Pro?

In my cloud version of CS-6, I am trying to export or convert my finished work and take to my
co-editor that uses Final Cut Pro. In "export" on my PrP file, I have the option to export as FCP "with notes."
When I do that, and look at the notes, they basically say "Clip one did not export - Clip two did not..."
I saw a tutorial on the web where they had the option to convert the file in Encoder from PrP file to FCP, but
it is not an option on my Encoder in the cloud. When I try to encode the files as .mov, they are tiny, and don't
    look good.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

You can take the project file and the source files to FCP by exporting it as an FCP XML. Other than that you may have to export the whole project as a quicktime mov or any other editable your co-editors use.

  • How did I export a High-Res image from my FCP Project?

I know how to export still images using Quicktime Conversion. But it is possible to export High Resolution images from my FCP Project. You help would be much appreciated

Wow man, that's not the most efficient way to get stills. You can do this in FCP, it's easy. Here is what you do....
Go to EXPORT and then USING QUICKTIME CONVERSION
You will see a dropdown box in the right corner that says FILE FORMAT. Change that to STILL IMAGE.
Underneath you can choose which type of still Image you would like to convert the frame to (JPEG, PIC, PSD, etc) You can also change the quality
    Hope this helps.

  • Audio and Video out of Sync after Pro Res export

I´m getting an audio/video sync issue when I´m exporting to Pro Res.
I started off in a HDV1080i50 sequence. Audio sampling rate is 48khz. (16 bit depth)
The sequence is less than 20 minutes long. It plays correctly on the timeline.
When I export the sequence for DVD and view it on a set top it plays absolutely fine.
When I export the video to ProRes (422 HQ - I used Export using Quicktime Conversion) and the audio to AIFF, they quickly go out of sync. This was brought to my attention first by the guys who were making the DigiBeta master, and when I view the exported material in a Pro Res sequence I can see it for myself.
The audio and video clips are of the exact same duration.
    Possible issues...
Some of the narration was recorded at 44.1 khz. I didn´t resample it (I´m still a learning novice..).. but if that is the issue should it not have affected the DVD as well? All the other audio in the project is 48khz.
Most of the material is HDV1080i50..but one clip used was originally an NTSC clip and therefore a different frame rate. However I converted it to a 25fps clip and this is reflected in the vid rate column in the browser where it says 25fps.
Final point, the exported AIFF files..when I import them back into the HDV1080i50 sequence and play back, it is perfectly in sync.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, yes resample the narration to 48k 16 bit.  You will probably be able to reconnect to the resampled files.  Usually works for me.   That's a simple fix and will probably solve the problem.  If it doesn't, you can try to change the codec (compressor) in the sequence settings to prores 422HQ, fully render and see if that solves the problem.
Wait, just reread your original post.  Export from fcp using file:  export:  quicktime movie NOT quicktime conversion with current settings.  If that works without synch issues, use compressor to convert to prores.

  • HDV to Pro Res 422 HQ, how would you do it?

I am shortly going to short some HDV 1080' and deliver it to the customer after I've edited it, on a hard disc as Pro Res 422 HQ 1920 x 1080.
Last time I simply ingested the HDV in the normal way and exported to Pro Res using "make Quick Time Movie".
Should I have injested the footage from HDV, direct to Pro Res 422 HQ and edited this and then outputed the Pro Res 422 HQ edit master? In other words did I needlessly encode the material twice when I did it before?

Why can't I simply change the "Capture settings" to Pro Res HQ?
Because FCP doesn't do that via firewire. The data rate is too high. It only does ProRes 422 via firewire.
Now you are getting into professional workflows, and for that you need professional hardware.
Why do I need to sling my Macbook Pro in the bin and start all over again, because I presume a capture card wont go in a laptop.
You presume incorrectly. The Matrox MXO2 and MXO2 LE will work on a laptop just fine. I use my MXO2 all the time on mine. BUT...here's the rub. You can't capture 1920x1080 29.97 at ProRes HQ. Well, you can, but not for long durations. Because the encoding of that needs to be handled by the processor, and you need at least a Quad Core to do that, laptops are Dual core. BUT, you can get the AJA IO HD, that works on a laptop too, and has a ProRes encoder built in. Issue is that it is $3400, while the MXO2 LE is $1000 (that encoder adds a lot).
I think it would be best to capture as HDV, then use the Media Manager to Recompress to ProRes HQ. Because they might want full raster ProRes and HDV>ProRes gets you anamorphic ProRes. I believe the Media Manager will make it Full Raster. As will Compressor.

  • Final Cut 7: Apple Pro Res Export Drops In File Size?

Hello all. We are noticing a 30% drop in file size when, after importing a 5-minute Apple Pro Res HQ file into Final Cut and performing minor editing (essentially removing a few frames from the ends), the resulting export (also Pro Res 422 HQ) is noticeably smaller, going from roughly 2.5 GB at the start to 1.7 GB at the end. Has anyone seen this? Is this normal? Does it affect file quality? If so, is there a workaround? Thanks for any and all help!
Sequence and imported clip settings both match and are at the highest quality. The original file was captured from a BetaSP into Final Cut as a Pro Res 422 HQ via a Sony DVW-A500 deck.

Those numbers suggest the possibility that you captured 29.97 and exported 23.98. Any chance that's the case?

  • Pro Res LT Codec delivers APCS codec.. slow and cumbersome

    Hi All,
I transferred the Hard Drive HD footage from my Canon camera into Final Cut using the Apple Pro Res LT codec. The codec that the file turned into is "apcs". This file is HUGE and will not play back correctly from a fast firewire 800 drive.
Is anyone else having this problem? I want to use LT because it is supposed to be perfect for multi cam timeline, but if the resulting file is apcs, which I can not find a definition for anywhere, and it can not play back at speed what to do? How do I get to Pro Res LT after all?
    Thanks,
    Lydia

    Hi Tom,
I am thinking I am doing something very wrong settings wise.
In Quicktime one of the rendered and exported timelines says:
    Format: Apple ProRes 422 (LT), 1920 x 1080 (1888 x 1062), millions 1 bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48,000 kHz
    FPS: 29.97
    Data Size 18.21 GB
When I exported the files the names did not come across correctly. The file name is truncated and an alpha numeric tag is added. For example, one name exported was Wide Bidya and McCormick ProRes Mix. What it was changed into was Wide Bidya and McCormick#12ADA2.
In the finder the same clip under the get info window/more info.
    Dimensions: 1920x1080
    Codecs: apcs, linear PCM
    Color Profile HD (1-1-1
    Duration: 24:8
    Audio Channels: 2
    Total bit Rate: 97,936
"STP processed audio " means the track was exported to Sound Track Pro as an audio file, saved and returned. The "Sent" version of the audio is the final audio utilized in the timeline.
I will tag on the clip and timeline exact prefs in my next entry.
    Thanks,
    Lydia

  • Proxy vs Optimised and Pro Res HQ vs H254

    Hi guys,
I importet about 28h of HD footage and would like to edit it. I imported with the "proxy" option enabled.
Now I did a quick test and exported as Pro Res 422 HQ and H264. The Pro Res HQ looks a tiny bit better then the H264. Why is that?
Now comparing the export with the Original File of the clip, the quality is not as good. Not by far but a little bit worse. Could the reason be that I only enabled the proxy option but not the optimized one? What advantage would I have if I enabled both?
I am working on a Late 2008 MBP with 5GB Ram, so I would like to get the processing power down as far as possible for editing without loosing any final export quality. Whats the best for that?

Colour correction in Proxy is fine . . .
This is my pet simple explanation, of ProRes 422.
(I was confused by it for years, but a Ripple Training tutorial on MultiCam Editing finally cleared it up for me).
Most video cameras use very high compression to store media on cards or tape. If the native camera files you are working with play back and edit well with FCP X, strictly speaking, you don't need to transcode to ProRes (but it helps - especially if you have multiple camera angles and effects, titles etc - and with colour correction).
If your playback is problematic, it's best to transcode the material. You can do this at any time. ProRes 422 is not so highly compressed as native camera footage, so it's far easier for your Mac to play it back (not so much unpacking to do). The downside of the footage being lightly compressed is that it takes a lot more disk space.
If disk space is at a premium, use Proxy. Native 1920 x 1080 footage becomes 960 x 540 when converted to ProRes Proxy, so it this takes a fraction of the disk space but is much lower quality. This is absolutely fine for editing - but you must remember to choose 'Optimised or Original Footage' in FCP X Preferences before you export otherwise you'll export 960 x 540.
I use some XDCAM EX footage from a couple of Sony EX1 Rs and some H.264 from a Canon 5D mk2. Until recently, I edited the XDCAM footage natively but I transcode the H.264. Now I'm using Proxy more - especially for multicam editing.
I sincerely hope your Projects, Events and Media are on a fast (Firewire 800) external HD (Formatted OS Extended). Keeping them on your system drive makes it difficult for your Mac to operate. It's also a very good idea to hide Audio Waveforms in your Timeline when you don't need them. They waste a lot of processor power.

  • HOW DO I CONVERT F4VS TO APPLE PRO RES?

Hi, I need to transfer a premiere pro project as a XML to FCP so i plan to convert the files into premiere pro  into Apple prores so they can opened in a Apple Pro Res project in FCP. The files I need to convert are the original MOVs and F4vs so the movs won't be a problem but the I've tried converting the f4Vs in Adobe Media Encoder and it seems to suggest I need FCP installed on my computer to convert them to pro res bu there must be a way of getting F4vs in to FCP. This is a project I'm transferring to be opened on someone elses computer in their FCP so how is this done?
    PLEASE HELP!
I have the apple pro res codec already installed on my computer and downloaded a free trial of Pavtube but when I tried converting a F4v file into prores it said I need Final Cut already installed on my computer so would wondershare say the same thing. Sorry but I just want to be clear so...If I convert all the movie files in my Premiere Project into Apple Pro Res then export that as a XML then send all the individual files along with the XML project file to another computer they would be able to open the XML project all good and fine in FCP7?... There isn't any speed adjusted clips in the project as with those I nested and converted them into f4vs in Media Encoder then reimported them into the Pro project, then there are a few clips that I have adjusted the scale and postion and put on a slight fade on some clips- would those effects transfer to FCP7 ok ?
The project files I used in Pro are-
    Editing Mode: DSLR,
    25fps,
    frame size 1920 x 1080, vertical 16:9,
Pixel Aspect Ratio, Square Pixels (1.0)
    Fields : No Fields(Progressive Scan)
    Sample Rate 48000,
    Video Previews-
Preview File Format I-Frame Only Mpeg
    Codec Mpeg I-frame
So if they open a project in FCP7 with as much of those settings as possible and in Apple Pro Res and then import the XML would that work?
Any advice would be extremely welcome and I'll be very greatful.Cheers
    Simon

Try using MPEG Streamclip. Seems to work for a lot of folks.

  • Exporting Pro Res 422 HQ

I have a customer that wants his output files to be delivered as a Pro Res 422 HQ .MOV file.
I have given him every possible output for Quicktime that is available in the Media Encoder for PPro5 and he has rejected every one
He refuses to even look at any file that is NOT in a .MOV container.
Does CS6 include Pro Rez outputs?  Is there an aftermarket transcoder or plug-in that can do the job?  Any help?

    Hi Dave,
but the "hardware recorder" have a valid licence - for sure they don't use the Apple SDK because there is no MAC OS to run it on ;-)
"The group behind FFMBC have reverse-engineered the codec themselves, which places them at risk of legal action (particularly in the USA where software patents apply)."
If you plan to incorporate this into 2000 NLE's or plan to sell software with Prores support you better get a licence.
If you are a individual or small company using ffmpeg to render some Prores files...
If you just live you are placed at risk of legal action esp. if software patents apply.
"Adobe certainly isn't about to engage in that type of thing."
How does this help? What is adobe about to engage? Are they offering a solution to the problem or do they only don't suggest the passengers of the Titanic to take a liveboat because there isn't a captain on board to ensure secure operation?
Lot's of questions and still not a good answer for Premiere on Windows users to export Prores...

  • Export to quicktime audio out of sync Apple Pro Res 422

    hello forum!
In a tizz as have an film due tomorrow but when I export to quicktime from final cut 7, the audio is out of sync...
I've scoured the forums and lots of other people seem to have this problem when using H264, however I converted to Apple Pro Res 422 (LT) before pulling files into final cut, plus all of the sequence and final cut settings (as far as I can tell) are already set to Apple Pro Res 422 (LT). I don't understand what I am doing wrong!
nb. the files seem to play okay in VLC

Thanks for your reply David! Indeed my audio is 16 bit 48 kHz and there is no MP3 audio (have a wav music file included).
I just spoke to a techy  friend who said the fact it is playing smoothly in VLC indicates the problem is with quicktime and not with the film itself, so I am currently compressing to something smaller and will see how I fare from there!
