How do I power the UMI-7764?

The power supply says 5V, but what should the current rating of the power supply be? I just want to confirm that it is 0.2A as in the user guide, but it says " + user-defined encoder and limit power ". I do not know what that means---but we are in fact using an encoder and stepper motor, so it seems relevant. Thanks for letting me know.

0.2 A is the maximum power consumption of the active devices on the UMI-7764. If you connect devices like an encoder to the UMI, you typically power them via the +5V outputs of the UMI-7764. These outputs are feed-through terminals that are directly connected to the +5V input of the UMI, so you will have to add the power consumption of any device that draws current from these outputs.
E. g. if your connect three encoders with 100 mA power consumption each, you will have to use a power supply that is rated for at least 500 mA.

    You'll need to refer to the documentation for the L293D driver to determine which lines it need attached. For servo motors you typically atach the Analog Out line as well as the Encoder feed back lines from the UMI. For steppers, you need to at least wire the step and direction lines to your drive. I recommend taking a look at the 7764 user manual as well for help with wiring.

  • Using a CW230 Bi-polar driver with the UMI-7764 and 7330 PCI. But clock level is loaded below 2v and motor will not run?

    I have my stepper driver connected to the +step and aogrnd terminals on the UMI-7764. With the driver connected to these terminals the output across the two is 2vp. When I disconnect the driver, the level returns to a 5vp signal. My drivers inputs are optically isolated so I suspect the impedance my be higher than TTL can drive. Is there any way to manually set the output parameters of the 7330 Motion controller?

    I don't believe there is a way to manually set the output parameters of the 7330, but I don't think this is the source of the problem.  If the KnowledgeBase articles are not the solution, post back and we'll keep troubleshooting!

    What is the purpose of the /INHIN1 terminal and how does it relate to the Inhibit Output signal?

    The basic purpose of the inhibit circuitry is to shut down the drive and inform other components in the system if a fault is detected. The UMI-7764 has circuitry onboard that will OR together four different sources of inhibits; the per axis controller inhibits, the per axis external inhibits (INHINx), the external inhibit all (INHALL), and the host bus interlock. You can use the INHINx lines to shut down an individual axis or the INHALL line to shut down all axes. These are typically wired to the "fault" output of the drive(s) you are using. When the UMI detects an inhibit from any of the four sources, then it will generate an inhibit signal on the INHOUTx lines. The INHOUTx lines are generally connected to the "enable" inputs on the drive(s). The polarity o
    f the INHINx and INHOUTx lines is configurable using the switches on the UMI.
    Do not simply tie any of these signals high or low with a jumper. Failure to properly connect the inhibit/enable signals can cause (and has caused) expensive damage to your motion system.

  • Is possible to give a 5V input to the umi 7764 connector blick for the limit switch inputs

    I am using a umi7764 connector block for my 7344 controller. My motion control hardware provides me a 5V output in case the limit switches are enabled. But the umi 7764 connector block connections for the limit swithces are in such a way that it doesnt get any input, instead it has to be directly connected to the limit switches.Is there any way to come around this problem so that the limit switch inputs read the 5v given out by my motion control appplcation

    If your drive has individual outputs for the forward, reverse, and home switches, then you could connect these to the their respective terminals on the UMI. You will need to either disable limit functionality on one component (controller or drive) or make sure the limit behavior for the devices does not conflict with each other. It probably is best if the controller handles the limits, but this will depend on your application.
    If the drive only has one output to indicate that one of the switches has been activated, then you have fewer options. In this case, you should probably just use the limit protection on the drive and poll that single output with another input on the UMI.

    In case you use a simple voltage divider you should clamp the line which goes into the 7344 encoder inputs with 4.7v zener diodes. In case the 'lower' resistor of the divider gets open the input circuitry of the 7344 might be damaged due to excess voltage.
    Also, when using any level converters (with voltage dividers or active circuitry) it is essential to provide a fail safe overvoltage protection to protect the 7344 inputs - and also your computer. The best method is galvanic isolation via optocouplers, but usually these need extra circutry to drive their inputs (they require several mA to drive the LED) and to re-shape their output signals since most optocouplers have rather long rise and fall times.

  • Can I re-direct the output of a UMI-7764 AO to another board (6233) AO?

    I have an existing application which I am trying to update to isolate
    the motor / encoder / servo amplifier from PC ground.  To this end
    I have installed opto-isolation circuitry and power isolation on the
    UMI-7764 to isolate my digital IO signals.  I still have a leakage
    path from the AO on the 7764 to the servo amplifier.  I do have a
    PCI-6233 in this setup, used for measuring isolated analog
    signals.  Is it possible to modify my labview control software to
    re-direct the AO from the 7764 to the 7233 AO to isolate the signal
    using the Configure Axes Resources.flx?  Otherwise a hardware
    route will need to be taken using an isolation amplifier (not
    preferred).

    Hi Stefan,
    Unfortunately you will not be able to route the AO Ground through your 6233 if you are using our FlexMotion subVIs.  These VIs have been specially designed to work with our Motion Controller cards so will only communicate with them.  You mention using our UMI 7764, that is simply a breakout box, which motion controller card are you using?
    Also, what are you using to confirm that the AO Ground is 'leaking'?

  • How to send an analog output signal on same axis running a stepping motor umi 7764/ PCI7334

    I am running a single axis stepping motor (which is working fine) but
    for the application I need to be able to turn on and off a 5 volt
    laser.  It notes in the manual for the UMI 7764  that the the
    analog output can be used as a general-purpose voltage output.  I
    would like to use it as such, but can't figure out what VI's actually
    send messages to the board to output a 5 Volt signal.  
    Ideally I would use the analog output on the same axis that the
    stepping motor is on, but if need be I could use one of the other axis
    if this isn't possible (ie. it may not be possible to step and send
    analog voltage output on same axis at same time).  I have been
    looking at the configuring DAQ and ADC stuff, but can't seem to make
    sense if these actually control the analog output channel.  I
    think they just control the Analog input channels, but maybe I am
    wrong. 
    Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hi,
    It is possible to send analog output out of the same same DAC channel in which your stepper is connected, if you configure the stepper as open loop in MAX. I've tried it. This way you have the stepper output, analog output and encoder input acting independently. So you can use these seperately for different purposes, such as using the analog output for constant speed motors where speed or position control is not of much importance, encoder for positioning some other axes and stepper output for stepper control. With good programming skills, the NI motion controllers can thus be used for the most complex configurations. Great work NI !!! Nothing is impossible.

    Wow, that's a manual! Almost 1000 pages...
    I hope you understand, that I can't work through this huge manual, so I'll give you some general hints:
    Don't forget to connect an externl +5 V power supply to the UMI-7764.
    Connect the AOUTx to the +/- 10 V input of the drive
    Connect the encoder signals (ENCAx, ENCBx,...) to the appropriate outputs of the drive. Please note, that the phase relation of Phase A and B are not standardized, so you may need to change the polarity of the phases in NI-MAX.
    Connect the INHOUTx to an ENABLE input of the drive. This allows the NI motion controller to turn off the power of an axis completely if necessary.
    Connect the limit switch inputs (FWDLIMx, HOMEx, REVLIMx) to mechanical limit switches if applicable.
    These are the most important connections. Please refer to the manuals of the drive and the motion controller to find out, if the voltage levels are compatible.
    Here are some more general pieces of advise:
    Use the drive in torque mode. This makes tuning easier.

    what type of limit switch sensor are you using and how did you wire itß What are your MAX settings regarding the limit switches?

    I am using two reed switch for the reverse and forward limit. I wired the signal wire of the reed switch to the limit ports(forward and reverse Limit) and its ground to the digital ground of the UMI-7764.

  • Is it possible to burn-out a UMI-7764??

    I was asked to troubleshoot a system that is using a PXI-7344 and a UMI-7764 to drive a three axis servo system. I noticed that the 5V converter in the system used to supply the UMI had 'blown up'. I disconnected it, and used an seperate power supply to power the UMI with the 5V it requires. There doensn't appear to be short, since only 60 mAs are being drawn from the supply, however the controller won't recognize the differential encoder input to the UMI. I have verified that the encoder information is correct. Is it possible that the UMI circuitry that converts the differential encoder input to a single ended output has been damaged?

    If you haven't tried yet, please connect the encoder signals sequentially to all four encoder inputs and repeat your test. Make sure that the encoder generates signals by using a Scope.
    If you don't get the encoder working at any encoder input there is the chance that either the UMI or the 7344 or both components are damaged. In this case there are two options:
    1. Contact your local NI branch for a repair request for both components
    2. Ask your local NI branch if they can send you a UMI and/or a 7344 as a loan so by exchanging these devices you could find out on your own which device is broken.

  • NI PCI 7342 and UMI 7764

    Hello All,
    I am using the PCI-7342 to control 2 servos for co-ordinated motion. I am using UMI7764 to breakout Motion IO to connect to my Servo Amplifiers. I am confident that the system will work fine because I have used a similar setup before. The issue I have now is that the UMI 7764 unit is farther than 2meters from the PC. I called NI and the tech said that NI doesn't have any cables longer than 2M to solve my problem. So she directed me to this forum. I was little disappointed that NI doesn't have any option or may be she is just not aware of it.
    I have following questions here. First, is it OK to have the UMI 7764 mounted farther than 2 meters from the PCI card? (I need one extra meter here) Has any one used a setup where he or she needed to mount the Break Out Board farther than 2 meters and if so than was there any issues with the signal degradation that was observed? Is there any limitation on distance mentioned any where on NI documentation ?
    Secondly if it's Ok technically to be farther than 2 m than who is the cable manufacturer? I was starting to search L-com.com. Is there any other source besides L-com.

    I have a testing machine (which permits to stretch or to compress samples) that I have to analyze with an aim to re-do the processing part (command part).
    I send to you a diagram of the machine and a diagram with the connection to the UMI 7764.
    I have to do moving the horizontal part, obtained thanks to the rotate of the two long screws.
    This screw turns thanks to the speed that supplies the motor (gearwheel + driving belt).
    To control the motor, I have to apply to the terminals AOUT and AGND, the consign voltage (є [-10V; +10V]), image of the motor speed rotate.
    +10V → 3000 rpm
        0V → 0 rpm
    -10V  → -3000 rpm

  • Problem with current position (UMI-7764)

    Good afternoon,
    I'm using servomotors PSKF321 (SEW) and servodrives MDX61B (SEW). I'm using the PCI-7344/UMI-7764 to control the motors. When I was performing some tests in MAX, I realized that I don't have feedback from axis 2, 3 and 4. Axis 1 is working fine, i can control perfectly the motor, I can make movements to different positions. I checked the connections from the drive to the UMI and they are the same that i used to axis 1. I changed to other axis and it doesn't work. I tried to change the connections from the axis2 and 3 to axis 1 they work. I tried to put in annex the xml file related to the configurations of the PCI but it wasn't accepted. It is possible that my problem is a wrong configuration of the PCI?

  • UMI 7764 second axis not working

    I have a strange problem with my NI motion control setup and I wondered if anyone could help me.
    I have the following setup:
    PCI-7330 connected to a UMI-7764
    Connected to the UMI-7764 I have two P70530 stepper drives, themselves connected to two Nema-23 stepper motors with shaft encoders wired back to the UMI-7764. All following the manual.
    The 'Inhibit Input' switch is set to active high and the 'Inhibit output' switch is set to active low.
    Both P70530 drives initialise (solid green LED). The stepper drive and motor connected via the 'Axis 1' terminals of the UMI-7764 works fine. The second one, connected via the 'Axis 2' terminals does not. When I attempt to start a motion via MAX, the motor audibly "clicks" once and then disengages. The drive then has a flashing green LED.
    The motor will remain disengaged until I attempt a motion in the opposite direction, at which point the same "click" is heard and the motor is now engaged. No motion other than the vibration caused by the motor engaging/disengaging occurs.
    Both drives and encoders are wired identically into the UMI. I have switched the cables with the drive that works, as well as the drives themselves and even the motors. The result is always the same; the drive/motor wired to 'Axis 1' works fine and 'Axis 2' "clicks" but doesn't move.
    I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions anyone can provide, please.

    A bit more information in case anyone can help me:
    Repeating the attempted motions in MAX for each axis I probed the poles of the UMI connected to the stepper drive. The results are below.
    The Inhibit Input of Axis 2 seems to be always at 5V.
    The 'Inhibit Input' switch on the UMI is set to active high and the 'Inhibit output' switch is set to active low. I would have expected, therefore, that reversing these switches would make Axis 1 stop working and Axis 2 start working. However, when I did this Axis 1 stopped working but Axis 2 continued the same behaviour (i.e. any attempted motion causes the motor to "click" and then disengage).
    I also attempted to reverse the Inhibit Input action via MAX, but the option is greyed out.
    Is there any reason why Axis 2 would be forced into having Inhibit Input at 5V? And, more to the point, is there a setting to stop it happening, or is this a hardware failure?
