How do I re-installing Xcode 4.1 for Lion?

I downloaded Xcode 4.1 via App Store to install on my system.  Maybe because I had 3.x installed or maybe because of an internet glitch, I got it downloaded, ran Xcode Install, but when I tried to launch Xcode crashed immediately.
I assumed it was corrupted, since I found this in the trace:
Application Specific Information:

Not seeing how to uninstall it properly, I just went ahead and deleted everything in /Developer (and /Developer.old, my previous install).  I assumed I'd be able to reinstall it over the top again.  Dumb assumption, because App Store shows it "Installed" and I don't know what to do to clean up and reinstall it again.
Any help appreciated!

I experienced this when migrating my dev tools to a 2008 MacBook and upgrading to Lion. Actually repeated the process several ways and even tried re-running the XCode installer. Spotted something on another site and tried downloading and re-installing iTunes (which contains some libraries to communicate with iOS devices) and that did the trick. Just wanted to add that here in case someone has no luck re-running the installer.

  • How do I create 2 Recovery partitions: one for Lion and one for Mountain Lion?

Well that is basically the question:
How do I create 2 recovery partitions: one for Lion and one for Mountain Lion?
Reason is that I would like to keep the option to return to Lion, or even better, have a seperate partition for eacht?

can I access my programs from the other partition, so I can save space ...
No, as far as I know, each one is completely separate - especially if you're dealing with two different versions of OS's.
is it possible to safely make an extra partion on a running drive (it is my main computer ...) The disk is large enough ...
how large would this have to be
I've personally never done it on a running drive - have read it's possible, but don't want to suggest it since I've never done it and wouldn't be sure about the steps. This is how I got to two partitions on my iMac:
Originally, I had just one partition with Snow Leopard. I used CCC to clone that to an external drive. Booted into that drive and used DU to partition and erase the internal. I then cloned the new clone back. Also cloned the same thing to the other partition which I then upgraded to Lion. So I had two OS's - SL and Lion. I've now decided to clone my SL to an external drive for occasional use and installed ML on that partition - so now I have Lion and ML.
There are two ways to get a "fresh" install: either download the OS again and install it on a partition of your choice or, as I've done as well, copy the installer to a safe place so you don't need to download it again. It does include whatever apps/software is included in the OS.  I've designated two smaller partitions on externals as my "fresh" installs of both Lion and ML for emergency or reinstall purposes (this is my way of dealing with not having install DVDs) - I took the time to install it there and then slowly add fresh installs of my important apps (either via download or install CD) - don't bother with the little/less used stuff, a current copy of that can be downloaded if and when I need it. I don't really update those two - that can also be done if/when I need it since that'll always change.
So, yesterday, I decided I wanted to start fresh with ML - booted into my fresh install of Lion (on external), wiped the SL partition on my internal and installed Lion. Decided to download a fresh copy of the ML installer and installed that. Then ran Software Update. After that, repaired permissions. Then I methodically opened every third party app and checked for updates - installed those where necessary. After all that, I simply copied (drag 'n drop) my entire Documents folder (which contains all my important data,, photos, etc) over from another backup.
This took a while, but mostly because of the long download times; the installs weren't all that bad. I should be running a really clean system now, especially since nothing was ported over except my Documents folder.

  • Installing XCode on Mini with Lion Server, iTunes

I had a problem and found a solution that I thought I'd share. While installing XCode 4.1 on our new Mini Server a non-model dialog popped up stating that the install could not continue because iTunes was running. But iTunes wasn't running. Then I remembered a deamon process that had "iTunes" as part of it name.
I went to the Terminal window and typed "top" which shows a list of running processes. I noticed "iTunesHelper" was running, made note of it's process ID (PID) and quit "top" (just press "q").
Then I typed "sudo kill kill <that process ID><return>" and ignored the error message.
The non-model dialog dissapeared and the install continued.

The iTunesHelper is often in the 'login items' of a user account. To prevent it running in future you could remove it from there.

  • How to buy already installed application - namely OS X Lion?

If you try to buy already installed application, Appstore tells you it's installed and doesn't let you buy it. Only option I found is deleting the application, then you can buy it and download it anew.
But... I have OS X Lion, I bought it under one Apple ID. Now I want to buy it on another Apple ID on the same computer (I want to own the licence on other Apple ID, not reinstall OS). Is there any way to do it? Except formatting HD?
Asked same question to Apple support, but looking for help in general, so asking here also.
    Thanks

I felt your pain when I purchased the mid-2011 Mac Mini to replace a dead iMac G5 last year, without doing my normal due diligence on Lion.
Like others I had the need to continue to access my finances in Quicken Deluxe 2002 (since rendered moot by Intuit's decision to release Quicken 2007 for Lion) as well as certain Excel 2004 charts that get trashed when opened in Excel 2011.
Since necessity is indeed the mother of invention, I worked out this solution: I installed Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7 in Lion:

  • How do I install Utility Mpeg2 Component for Lion?

I know people have asked similar questions, but I don't understand the answers that have been given.  I want to use MPEG Streamclip and just bought my first Mac (with Lion).  I installed MPEG Streamclip 1.93b7 beta, which I understand is required for Lion.  When I open the file, I see the icon for "Utility MPEG2 Component Lion."  I understand that I am supposed to open this, but I am not able to.  I get a message telling me to double click the file "QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg" in order to open the QuickTime MPEG2 disk image.  However, I am unable to find the file "QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg."  Where do I find this?
I looked in the Quicktime folder and found a number of files, including QuickTimeMPEG.component and QuickTimeMPEG4.component, but no QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg."
Thank you so much for any help!  I am new to Macs and am not really familiar with the terminology.

  • I have OSX 10.6.8 - how do I make room on mac HD for Lion?

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 with OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leoprad. I want to move all my music, photos, and videos to other hard drives so i will have more room in Mac HD for Lion etc. I have not been to do this. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

If you have a MacBook Pro 1,1 then forget it, stay on 10.6.8.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner and clone your OS X 10.6 boot volume to another blank GUID OS X extended formatted drive. (use the Secure Erase > Zero feature on the drive first to eliminate any bad sectors) this is your 10.6 clone so you can boot and use PPC based apps your going to lose going to 10.7/10.8 or to come back to 10.6 if you won't like the Lions.
Hold option key down on a wired keyboard to boot from the clone drive and check it out.
Next zero erase your entire 10.6 original boot drive holding option from the 10.6 installer disk
Reinstall 10.6 from the disks (same account name), reinstall iLife from the second disks and call Apple if you want to upgrade to 10.7 specifically but your MacPro 1,1 can go to 10.8 directly from AppStore.
Now your machine is bare bones, install your 10.8 compatible third party programs/upgrades etc.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
On another drive setup duplicate Music2, Pictures2, Movies2 and Document2 folders and copy your files from the clone into them. Thus only on the boot drive is programs and OS X, no files.
You can command drag items like the original Documents, Music, Pictures folders off the Finder window sidebar and use the Music2, Pictures2, Movies2 etc there instead. However some programs will still try to save things automatically in the original user folders.
When you launch say iPhoto in 10.8 against the older 10.6 iPhoto Library, it will update it.
This sounds like a lot more work, but it's really giving you a solid footing, a stable fast system and free of crapola.
I always take a extra mile in being through to eliminate as many potential issues as possible, as it's cheaper and less hassle than cure, my machines always run well and fast, even Windows ones.

  • How do I can install TWAIN plug-in for Adobe Photoshop CS5

I like photoshop cs5 and some plug in but I can not install them so you can show me how to set up to use ... so When I installed Adobe Photoshop CS5, I noticed that scanner selection is not there. I contacted Epson technical support and they said Adobe Photoshop CS5 does not automatically install the TWAIN plug-in

    Thanks for your response.
I downloaded the "Photoshop CS5 Optional Plugins" file (PSCS5OptionalPlugins_Win_en_US.zip). I unzipped it and read the "ReadMeCS5_OptionalPlugin.pdf" file. In that file, the only section that discusses TWAIN is entitled "TWAIN (Mac only)". There is no section for how to install TWAIN for Windows.
How do I install the TWAIN plug-in for Windows?

  • Bought and installed Xcode 4.x in Lion, still wants to install???

    Hey everyone,
So I purchased Xocde from the MAS, downloaded and installed fine on my two machines but every time I look in my purchases the install button is always highlighted. I've deleted both installs on each machine, re-installed with the same result. So far this only happens with Xcode. Can anyone tell me what's up?
    Thanks,
    Jason

Yes, it's running fine. I did delete the installer afterwards, I'm not leaving a 4+gb file taking up space.

  • How do I create a start-up disk for Lion

I would like to resize the Boot Camp partition on my new iMac running Lion 10.7.2.  To do that, using iPartition, I need to boot the system from another drive.  Ideally I'd like to use a USB flash drive or a DVD as the alternative boot drive.
Obviously I can't boot from the Recovery HD partition on the iMac's boot drive, so I used Recovery Disk Assistant to build a Recovery HD on a flash drive.  When I boot the system up from that flash drive I can see the icons for all of my files on the iMac, including those on the secondary hard drive, where iPartition lives, but I can't seem to launch any applications, including iPartition, because they are all grayed out.  Best I can tell, the Recovery HD is designed to provide installation and repair services, but doesn't give you a fully functioning OS.
So my question is: How do I create a disk that will allow me to start-up a fully functioning copy of Mac OS X Lion from a drive other than my normal boot drive?  My second question is: Do I need to move iPartition to that drive or will it run from the secondary drive built in to the iMac.
I'm a newbie to the Apple world, so if the answer is completely obvious, please forgive me for asking.
    Bob

I used SuperDuper to create a bootable clone on an external drive where I installed my maintenance programs. Now whenever I need then I just boot from it.

  • How/where do I get /usr/bin/make for lion?

Previous OS X releases came with a DVD that included an "SDK" package to support normal unix software development (gcc, make and so on). Having just bought a new macbook pro with lion pre-installed, there's no DVD, no SDK.  Does this exist anywhere?
