How do I transfer miniDV to DVD?

I have a 2.8GHz intel dual core IMac with OS X 10.7.2 and 4G of RAM.  Using firewire and to read a miniDV Canon camcorder, I simply want to transfer the tape to DVD.  I do not need to edit the tapes.  The miniDV tapes are 60 minutes, and the DVD is 120 minutes (4.7GB).
I tried using Imovie, but it breaks the miniDV tape into as many clips as I had started and stopped recording.  I spent 20 minutes trying to select each clip and drag it up into a project window so I could transfer to iDVD.  That is a very time consuming process.
Next, I tried the simple DVD within iDVD.  That worked simple, except, it filled a DVD with only about 20 minutes of video from the tape; then I could not find any way to continue recording onto another blank DVD.
Isn't there a simple way to transfer the miniDV on my iMAC without buying any more software?
Thank you in advance.
Steve

iDVD is the best way.
Purchase iLife 11 (or iLife 09)  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.

  • How do I transfer legally Owned DVD's to my iPod Video?

I got a new iPod Video for christmas and I want to know how to take my own personal DVD's and transfer them to my iPod. I've read lots of threads about this subject but I haven't been successful in transfering anything. I downloaded Videora and DVDFab Decrypter but I don't know how to use them. I also found a lot of feedback saying that it would be illegal to transfer DVD's to the iPod and all I can say to that is, that's absolutely ridiculous. I bought the DVD's legally and should be able to transfer them. I paid for them and I don't plan on selling them to anyone else so explain to me what's illegal about it. I think that preventing us from transfering DVD's is just another way for Apple to make money. Eventually they'll come out with a Movie library in iTunes that you'll have to pay for, they already have music videos and tv shows. The other thing that really ****** me off is that in no way do they make clear that you're not allowed to transfer DVD's to your iPod. I think that a lot of people assumed along with me that you can transfer any movies you wanted to the iPod without a problem and the fact that you can't is a serious question in my mind as to whether or not Apple has committed fals advertising. Apple products are already priced much higher than they should be and I feel that this is just another way for them to make money. Sorry I needed to rant. Can anyone help me transfer my DVD's to my iPod? Or direct me towards some other 3rd party programs that might work easier?

"Why would anyone want to stare at that little screen for 2+ hours... I dont think apple false advertised at ALL...
Watching a movie would just kill your battery and waste a lot of space on your iPod which was first intended for music..
Pretty common sense if you ask me."
whowhat I think that a lot of people want to watch movies on the new iPod otherwise the software that transfer DVD's to iPod's wouldn't exist. And I'm sorry but what is the point of making an iPod video if you can't watch movies on it? so that you can watch a music video for 3 minutes? or your choice of 5 tv shows or however many there are? I don't think so. I just feel that if I pay $400 for a new iPod and I spend $20 on a movie, I shouldn't have to pay an extra $30 just so I can get the software that puts DVD's onto my iPod. Obviously if I'm at home I'm not going to sit and stare at the iPod but the whole point of an iPod is that you can have all your music and all your videos on the go when you're on a plane or a train or a long car ride. I just think it's bull **** the way apple does business making everything overpriced and all I'm saying is that when I bought the new iPod I expected that I would be able to put my own movies onto the iPod. And even though when you buy a DVD you're buying the right to view it, not the rights to it, all I would be doing is viewing it on my iPod, how is that wrong?

  • How do i transfer system recovery dvd to a usb

I received my dvd today and when I called up there suggestion was and I quote "copy and paste all the data from the dvd to a usb, don't you know how to transfer files".
I was like that won't work can you put me trough to someone that has better understanding and he goes it will cost you 30 somthing pounds.
Can someone that understands my problem help me out?
How can I transfer a system recovery dvd to create a bootable system recovery usb. I have another pc.

Do you have only 1 dvd or several? I have seen others attempt this with a multiple dvd set and fail miserably. With 1 dvd you might have a chance. Create an ISO from the dvd with something like ImgBurn or other cd/dvd burning tool that can create an ISO file from a disc.
Once you have the ISO file use Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool  to create a usb Recovery. It was created for Windows7 but works on other ISO files.

  • How can I transfer a purchased dvd to my iPad?

How can I transfer a DVD (that I purchased) onto my ipad to watch at a later time?

    You really can't.
Technically, you'd need to crack the copyright protection software to rip the DVD. Since that is illegal in the US, we can't tell you how to do that.
The recommendation we can give here is for you to purchase an iTunes copy or a version of the DVD that may have a digital copy and then sync that onto your device.
Anything beyond that you'll need to look elsewhere.

How do you transfer your own DVDs to iPad

presuming you mean home made dvd's, not commercial dvd's....Handbrake is a great program to convert file types. You then sync those via iTunes to your device.
If it's commercial dvd's, you're on your own because no one here can help you break the encryption on those.

  • How do I transfer my photo library to DVDs?

I am trying to transfer about 2500 photos from my MacBook to DVDs.  My DVDs have a capacity of 8.5GB but I get a window stating that I need a disk with 17GB capacity.  How can I transfer to multiple DVDs?

    1. When you burn from iPhoto it creates a mini-iPhoto Library on the disk, inclusing all the database, preview and assoicated files. This disk can only be viewed in iPhoto on another Mac. Is that what you want?
    2. iPhoto can span disks like that. The only way to do it is to select batches of Events and burn them.

How do I transfer a TV clip to my iPad from a DVD

Commercial DVDs are usually encrypted. In the U.S., it's illegal to break that encryption which is a necessary first step in making a copy. Because it's illegal to do, the Terms of Use in these forums prohibit discussions about software or methodos. Sorry.

Actually, as the owner of the DVD, you are permitted to make one copy.  You can use Handbrake to make an iPad compatible version of the DVD movie, then move it into the Videos section of iTunes.  From there, you can sync it with your iPad.

How can I convert MiniDV tapes to DVD? I've use a Canon GL 2 and an iMac about 1 year old. I'm trying to use iMovie and I've installed the latest drivers.

MiniDV was a great format, one I still use often. I also still use iMovie HD6 to process it and, for all the iterations of iMovie that followed it, I still believe it was one of Apple's greatest movie software programmes, next to Final Cut Pro, using a timeline method of editing. That was also in the day which Apple put Superdrives into their computers, so that you could not only make your movie in iMovie, but you could render it to iDVD and then burn the DVD. Now you need to buy an external burner.
Since iMovie HD6 and iDVD 6 were "universal" software, it has continued to work through the many OS releases since it came out with Tiger, I believe it was. So, it may still work with Mavericks too and, if you could locate a copy of iLife 06, probably used, you might enjoy the difference that HD6 has over all iMovie releases since then.
Not saying you can't process your MiniDV with current iMovie versions, but I'm not the one to speak about that.

How can I transfer DVD content back to the original iMovie program, (iMovie 6)  or whatever? Thanks. I need to redo the movie, but have lost the original movie files which I did in iMovie 6.

Handbrake (free) can recover from the DVD into an editable file you can use in iMovie.
