How to compress unedited movie to smaller size?

I was wondering if theres a way to compress the existing imported video file that is unedited to a smaller size. I ahve a good size hardrive but I don't have time to edit all the camcorder movies I take so I leave them untouched in their folders in the meantime. The problem is that the unedited copy in imovie is 12-15GB and it sure adds up if you have more than one video.
I know I can export it to a smaller size but it will combine my video into one which I don't want due to editing purposes in the future.
Please let me know thank you.

If you mean that exporting will join your project into one clip, that's usually not the case. Clips are usually preserved as true clips when you export to the camera, then import them back to iMovie.
Try it to see how it works for you. If it works the way you want, then that's a good way to reduce the size of the project. (If the original video was imported as a single clip, that may be problematic.) If nothing seems to work, try adding a black slug between clips before exporting. Or a title over black.
Otherwise, there's no good way to save the project in a compressed format and also preserve all the quality.

  • Help!  How do I trim clips to smaller size so I can move between movies?

Help! I am editing a wedding video with a lot of footage. If I try to clip out a very small part of the video, even if it's only 10 seconds long, it still stays the same size of the original clip - 5 gb! I can't create a video like this - I've already deleted everything off of my computer as it is just to make room for the clips. Please tell me there's a way to trim down clips so they're smaller in size so I can move between movies and edit this. I really appreciate your help - thank you!!

This has been answered in your duplicate post, but just to clarify:
Non-destructive editing is an important feature of iMovie.
iMovie preserves the entire copy of every clip you place into your movie in case you change your mind at a later stage.
So, if you have cut out one minute from a 45 minute clip, iMovie will have stored two complete copies of that clip. This is why is helps to set import as 3-5 minute clips rather than one huge chunk. As DV runs at 13GB per hour your project files can get very big.
One workaround is to complete the editing of a section of the movie, then export that to Quicktime: highlight the clip/s, choose Share-Quicktime, turn on Share selected clips only, and choose Full Quality from the pop-ip menu.
Once you have saved the stand-alone clip to your hard drive, you can re-import it into your project using the File/Import command, and delete the original long clip/s from the project.

  • How to compress a .mov into a QuickTime for Internet sending?

My sequence exported as a .mov file is too big to send via YouSendit.  I tried the Settings: QuickTime Compatible 7 in Compressor and the new file was 4.3 Size instead of 16.9.  Same thing when I tried to compress it into an MPEG 4.  I'm working on Final Cut Pro version 6 on my MacBook Pro laptop. Can you help please?

How big do you want it to be?  Is quality of any concern?  Does it need to be full resolution?
I assume you're uploading the file for someone to download; not for actual posting/viewing on the web.   If that is correct, is this a draft copy for client review or the final product?

  • How can I print out a small size address book in Leopard?

How can I print out my address book in Leopard, preferably in pocket size and preferably
without each card having a separate page?

First off, you've posted in the Tiger forum, even though your profile says you're running Snow Leopard. Even worse, you're asking about Leopard. You need to be sure you post your questions in the corrrect forum.
As for the question itself, all you have to do is select the Group you want to print in Address Book, choose Print, select 'Pocket Address Book' from the pop-up Style menu, check the attributes you want included for each contact, and the paper size you want to use and Print.

  • MPEG Streamclip Or Compressesor (To Make Mov Files Smaller Size)??

Hi there Ive always used MPEG Streamclip after I make mov files with Final Cut Pro to bring the file into MP4 format where its alot smaller (using 300k limit data rate) but for some reason after I make the file with Sony EX1 footage at 1920 x 1080 theres a severe quality loss where the transitions are really pixelated.

If you are converting hi-def using 300kbps I am surprised you can see any video at all!
    Even 3,000 is too slow.
5,000kbps can produce reasonable results but 10,000kbps is safer.
You can export your videos straight from FCP using QT Conversion. No need for any other app.

  • How to split a movie into smaller segments before importing to iMovie 09?

I got software from Roxio allowing me to get VHS tapes to the computer in the form of .mov. It was supposed to convert it for use with iMovie but it didn't work. So I'm using MPEG Streamclip converting it to DV. But it takes too many GB's. I need to break the alaska.mov to several smaller parts. I know this is simple but can anyone help? Thanks.
    Max

thanks for your helpful suggestions. I opened the old VHS movie converted by Roxio VHS to DVD. It opened in Quicktime. I then trimmed it into more or less 4 equal parts, using the trim function in Quicktime. I then converted each part to DV using MPEG streaclip saving it to an external drive. I then used iMovie 09 to import it and create thumbnails. Now I'm ready to edit. I could have avoided all those steps by dragging it directly into Final Cut Express which I have, but this program is too complicated for me to learn.

  • How to compress DV into smaller size?

    Hi.
I need to know how to compress a DV file to say 60% of it's original size. I'm trying to pre-compress these files so that they will fit on a single DVD without using Toast on the final burn. In other words I want to compress the DV files without compressing the DVDSP menus etc.
    Sandy

sandy, are you trying to make a data dvd with a quicktime (dv compressed) movie file or a dvd-video?
in the first case; dv has only one compression setting, there is no way to change it, unless you compress using a different codec.
in the latter case, you'll be wanting to compress to m2v (mpeg2) and probably ac3 for the audio
    hope this helps

  • Compressing movie to correct size

All of this is new to me, and I have several movies that I have made, however in the quicktime format they are too big for posting, could somebody please help me with how I can make the movie smaller size and still be decent looking in the process?
    thanks

    Hi Klaus1, and Thank you!,
a lot of my movies I have made are about 160 mb, In order to post them on youtube, I need them to be 100 mb or smaller, I know I was playing around one time on the share features and selected a different file format and was able to compress the file to a smaller size using something other than .mov, however I have not a clue as to what I did, or what to do now.
I really have no idea as to how anything works with the file compression.
    any advice will be great!
    thanks

  • How does compressing movie files work?

Hello! I am new here, and with FC i made a 17GB movie. However, i wish to compress it so it doesnt take up as much room on my hard drive. Can i compress this movie file so it takes up much less? How should i compress it? And does it hurt the quality of it or how do i de compress it? Thanks!

Can i compress this movie file so it takes up much less?
Yes. What format is it now, what size are you aiming for? H264 is a good choice, great results and a much smaller file size.
    How should i compress it?
Use Compressor or QuickTimePlayers "Export" function -you already have both.
MPEG Streamclip will also make H264 and is a free download. There are several others which you can buy, Autodesk Cleaner and Sorenson Squeeze are two that spring to mind.
And does it hurt the quality of it...
It can turn out poor if the compression is overdone. Test your compression on a small section first -you could mark in and out on part of your movie in QuickTime Player, copy/paste it into a new QuickTime Player document and use that for testing.
or how do i de compress it?
That usually does not turn out so well. Keep the original instead -hard drives are cheap these days. Just buy an external drive and store it there.

  • What's the best settings to Export movie for smaller file sizes?

Hi, I've been working on some helmet cam footage which was taken with Xvidmpeg4.avi and was advised to convert it to dvavi for editing in PrE, this created a huge file to work with, the original footage was 206mb and the finished edited dvavi file is now 1.56gb, what settings can I use to export the movie with a much smaller file size, but hopefully try to retain some quality, to upload to places like Vimeo? I thought I would try to export it in the same as the original footage Xvidmpeg4.avi thinking this might compress it again to something like the 206mb of the original and the original was good quality footage, but PrE just hangs up with a box stating 'Xvid Status (Not Responding)' and when I try to cancel that the whole thing crashes and closes? So when I go to File > Export > Movie, what would be the best settings in:
    General > File Type ?
    Video > Compressor
lots of options under compressor if I select the file type as Microsoft AVI, so I'm guessing something under that would compress it to a smaller file size but what, I could spend all night trying different settings so hoping for some advice?
Or, if I'm completely in the wrong place for the settings and should be doing something else please tell me?
    Thanks, Gav

Thanks for the replies, but to me it's still confusing - simply because there are so many settings, if I go to Share/Personal Computer I'm then presented with a whole load of settings
    NTSC Flash Video
    MPEG
    DVAVI
    Windows Media
    QuickTime
and under each of those is a lot more advanced settings?
I'm guessing I wouldn't use flash or quicktime, so which of the others would I use and what are the advanced settings to use as I can't find anything that is .wmv or .mov
What I've done with other videos that I've exported from PrE as dvavi is then to put it through Windows Movie Maker, Publish Movie, This Computer, then put the settings to Windows Media DVD Quality (PAL) (3.0 Mps) - this seemed to be the only setting that reduced the file size considerably but still had good quality, but it's still about twice the original file size?
This all seems long winded to me, open original file, convert original file, output another file, then output the file again in something else which then results in loss of quality and a larger file than the original? I'm ending up with lots of files, was hoping just to edit in Premiere then export/publish that edited clip and that would be it, then upload to the net.
Is it not possible to just edit my original footage and save it, just like you would with something like a word document, should I be using something else and not Premiere?
    Thanks.
