How to convert offline ESXi 5.5U1 virtual machines to Hyper-V?

Following on from my
earlier question, I am having trouble working out how to convert my ESXi VMs to Hyper-V. Am I doing something really unusual?
I have a ESXi 5.5U1 server at home for my home test lab. I want to convert this to Hyper-V Core 2012 R2. Target storage layout will look like this:
Currently under ESXi 5.5, I don't have the C drive (using a USB flash to boot), and the RAID-5 and RAID-0 arrays are two separate VMFS volumes.
I don't have swing kit to migrate, I have to repurpose existing hardware. I do have my Windows 8.1 workstation but that only has 900 GB free space.
Some of my VMs have vmdks greater than 2TB.
My plan was to
In ESXi before rebuilding, move my VMs from the RAID-5 vol to the RAID-0 vol and then delete anything that wouldn't fit that's not strictly necessary from the RAID-5 volume.
Shutdown ESXi and remove the USB flash drive.
Install Hyper-V onto the System disk as C drive.
Format the RAID-5 volume as NTFS (64k) and create a mount point into the C drive as C:\RAID-5. Put my VM disks in C:\RAID-5\VirtualDisks and the VMs in C:\RAID-5\VirtualMachines.
Somehow convert the VMs from the RAID-0 VMFS volume to Hyper-V VMs on the RAID-5 NTFS volume.
My confidence is low because I have tried to convert a new test machine created in ESXi 5.5 to a spare test Hyper-V 2012 R2 with the MVMC 3.1 converter and it failed. I also tried with the free 5nine converter and that failed too. I tried with and without
the Guest Additions installed. Both conversions failed. I should mention I am in a workgroup, not a windows domain.
Please help!

May i inquire on why those two products failed? I had some struggles with both of them but eventually got things worked.
Also you should try this one
Starwind V2V convertor, it has worked for pure offline conversions for me as well. That was years ago, so hopefully it still works.
Sure, here is the log from an attempt to convert a brand new VMware virtual machine which has Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard in it with no VM tools. http://pastebin.com/xdhzZ7tx
Here is the log from an attempt to convert a Lubuntu linux VM: http://pastebin.com/Nc0E8Bip
Both conversions attempted with MVMC3.1. Common error between them is
12/24/2014 08:25:36 +00:00  [7]  VERBOSE:    Microsoft.Accelerators.Mvmc.Engine.DiskCopyFailureException: The virtual disk(s) attached to the source virtual machine were not successfully converted to VHD(s) and copied to the
workspace folder path. ---> System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred. ---> System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred. ---> System.Security.Principal.IdentityNotMappedException: Some or all identity references could not be
translated.
I retried using 5nine converter and it worked this time, not sure why. Will not try a test with a BSD based distro (pfSense) and Linux.

    thanks

Previously it has been blocked to install Windows Server in the VM and then add the Hyper-V Role.
However, it has always been possible to install Hyper-V Server inside a VM. (the free Hyper-V Server SKU)
The Hyper-V Server VM is fully manageable, but it cannot start any VMs.

You connect to the VM using the RDP Client - connecting to the IP / name of the VM over the network.
This enabled all device redirection by default.
You can possibly use Enhanced Session Mode as well.  That again uses RDP under the hood.

  • Type 2 Virtual Machine in Hyper-V will not PXE boot with WDS

    Hi
Bit of a wierd scenario this but I'm doing a bit of a lab experiment kind of thing. The setup is as follows:
VMWare Workstation 10 with Windows Server 2012 R2 running as a virtual machine. In VMW10 I have a NAT network interface and a Bridging interface set to load with the virtual machine. These seem to work fine (although the NAT doesn't seem to want to connect
to the internet but that's why the bridging one is there in addition).
Server 2012 is configured with the following roles:
ADDS, DHCP, DNS, Hyper-V, Printer, WDS
I have correctly configured WDS to work on the same machine as DHCP and I can get PXE boot working with WDS on a Type1 Virtual Machine in Hyper-V using the Legacy Network adapter. My problem is when I try and PXE boot on a Type2 Virtual Machine (this type
is new in R2 and should eliminate the need for a legacy network adapter) using the same network interface that I used for the Type1 machine, I get an IP address from DHCP but WDS doesn't seem to respond. Instead I get the "PXE-E16: No Offer Received"
message. I have tried just about everything I can think of and spent the whole day trying to figure out why this is the case but came up with nothing. Has anyone else encountered this or can anyone shed any light on the matter?
    Many thanks in advance

"VMWare Workstation 10 with Windows Server 2012 R2"and "Server 2012 is configured with the following roles: ADDS, DHCP, DNS, Hyper-V, Printer, WDS"
Hyper-V is not supported to be run as a VM.  It is a Type 1 hypervisor, which means it works on the bare metal.  You have it running as a VM on a Type-2 hypervisor, so it has no access to the bare metal.  Yes, VMware may have made it so some
things work in that environment, but it is not a supported (or tested) environment for Hyper-V.

  • Harddisk damage after sleep mode while running 3 virtual machine on Hyper-V

Hi, I have laptop with specification Intel Core i3, 8 Gb ram, 500 Gb 5400 rpm Hdd. I am running 3 virtual machine on that laptop using Hyper-V. Each vm have 1 Gb ram and 1 core processor. I left the laptop for
lunch. After comeback from lunch I see that laptop on sleep mode. I press the power button to turned back on the laptop, after the power is on, the harddisk won't boot and the disk become damage. Is there anyone could explain why that is
    happen?  Thanks  :)

    Hi Budi-Kurniawan,
Based on your description, this issue shouldn’t be caused by current configurations on your environment (as
you described: wake up from sleep mode while run 3 virtual machine on Hyper-V). I guess that there are some troubles in this harddisk. As Dave mentioned, please contact with laptop manufacturer and confirm it. I believe we will get a better assistance there.

  • I currently run Windows 7 on my iMac using the Parallels software on a Virtual Machine. I now wish to use Windows through bootcamp. How do I remove windows from the Virtual Machine

I currently run Windows 7 on my Imac through a Virtual Machine format with the Parallels software. I now wish to remove Windows from the VM restore the Hard Drive to a single partition then install windows 7 using bootcamp. How do I go about it

The virtual machine isn't a partition on your hard drive, it's just a file. You can delete the vm by going into Paralells preferences or just drag t to the trash. Bootcamp will partition your hard drive for a Win 7 install.

  • How to install windows 7 32 bit virtual machine on windows 7 64 bit

Wondering what would be involved in installing windows 7 32 bit as a virtual machine on a windows 7 64 bit laptop, trying to continue to use software that only has 32 bit drivers to talk to specialized hardware before scrapping the hardware.  Drivers
are not updateable due to the company no longer exist.  Being forced to do this since I am using windows XP to currently do this and will have to stop using XP by 01Apr2014.
    thanks for any help

If it's special hardware, your chances are small for it to work in a
virtual machine.  Some USB devices might work, but Virtual PC can't see
the real hardware on the host.

  • How do i install reader in a Virtual Machine

I am a developer and need to install reader in an XP virtual machine running upon my Windows 7 desktop
I need to test out acrobat and IE 8
It gets to 34% downloaded and then fails.
In the xp machine i have turned off the firewall and removed the anti virus software
In the windows 7 machine i have turned off the firewall and turned off the anti virus software
    Any other suggestions?

Download it on the host machine from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/, then copy it into VM.  Or run it in VM directly from the host folder.

  • How do we create cpu alerts on virtual machines?

We are using SCVMM 2012 R2 and SCOM 2012 R2
Under monitoring we can see the cpu load for individual instances of virtual machines Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.2012.VirtualMachine.PercentCPU
Under authoring there doesn't appear to be a cpu counter for us to create overrides to add to an alert subscription
We don't want to load the scom agent on each VM and access via e.g. target 'windows server 2012 operating system'
    Thanks
    David

    Hi David!
    1. You could create overrides directly from the perf.view, but:
    2. you cannot simply add alerting to a collection rule (of a sealed MP).
    3. I am able to see that perf. collection rule in the authoring pane, but again: see 2.
    4. You will need the Win OS MP and an agent on the VM if you'd like to monitor the CPUs. AFAIR there is nothing in the VMM MP itself for alerting on the VMs CPU perf.
    Cheers,

  • How to access PS(32) in XP virtual machine under Win7(64)?

I have a PC running 64-bit Windows 7 and Photoshop CS4 std. (both 64- and 32-bit versions installed).
My HP z3100 printer drivers are 32-bit (64-bit unavailable until june 2010)
I loaded the XP virtual machine and downloaded the existing HP 32-bit drivers there, thinking I could print in that environment.
Using explorer, I found PS32 on my 'real' machine, but attempting to start it results in an exception. Bridge CS4 works ok.
    1. Am I doing the right thing to print this way? I don't think I can load those drivers into my 64-bit environment.
    2. Is this the right way to access my PS32?
    3. If so, why does it crash? If not, what should I be doing?
    Thanks

Adobe kindly increased my activation count. Here is the last part of my chat:
Kesavan: It is activated already on the 1st machine.
Eric: Then why doesn't it work?
Eric: It *does* work in the 64-bit part of the machine; it does *not* work in the 32-bit part
Kesavan: I understand that it takes as two activations and you need to deactivate it from any of the machine to get it activated on the other.
Eric: Yes that is the standard protocol. But it does not apply here. This is new.
Eric: I do not want to go into 64-bit PS to deactivate it every time I start the 32-bit version, then do the same thing in reverse on the way out.
Kesavan: As we value your business with us as an one time exception I've increased the activation count by 1 and now you can go ahead and get it activated without any issues.,
    Eric: okay let me try.
Eric: Yes that worked. Thank you. Please consider this situation carefully - it will occur again (other users).
    Eric: Thanks again
    Kesavan: You are welcome.

  • Strange problem with virtual machines backup (Hyper-V 2012R2)

    Hi
I have a strange problem with backup of virtual machines in one of my Hyper-V environments. Let me describe how does it looks like: There are two physical servers - HP DL360 G8. They are used as hosts for four virtual machines - domain controllers in two domains.
Each of them runs one DC in every domain. I've configured backup "inside" every virtual machine (with Windows Server Backup tool), in its operating system, because domain controllers should have their system state, regularly backuped, etc. Backup
is made on the network share - all machines to the same server as destination. And now the case - two virtual server are backuped as expected - the operation takes 3 - 4 minutes and is always succeded. But in case of two remaining it looks as below:
    - Backup operation starts (is scheduled).
    - Volume shadow copy is made.
    - The first partition of VM starts to be copied. It's Windows 2012 R2 Generation2 VM, so it has EFI, Recovery and C: partition. EFI is as first and at this moment backup stucks for a 2-3 hours! Progress of copying is 0%. After for example 3 hours this partition
is completed and starts the next (disk C:). And again - it freezes for a few hours and suddenly is pushed. As a result the backup is made successfully, but it takes for example 10 hours.
Both "dodgy" VMs are on separated hosts. All four of them were installed in the same time. I tried to change destination to locally connected disk, but no result. It's interesting as well, that after rebooting VM, the first backup is made normally,
but every next has described problem again. In EventLog I can't find any errors, I don't know how to diagnose such case precisely, etc. Have you got idea what can cause such behaviour or where on the server should I look for some hints?
    Thanks
    Marcin

    Hi Marcin,
    >>that after rebooting VM, the first backup is made normally, but every next has described problem again.
    It shouldn't happen .
To narrow this issue down , Please try to backup an Gen1 VM and check the result .
