How to remotely manage a Mac not on my network?

I'd like to remotely manage a Mac over the Internet. Specifically my mother's iMac, so when she loses Dock icons or can't find her Address book or something I can fix it from my location in another state. Simple things, but trying to explain it over the phone is generally unsuccessful. We're both running Snow Leopard. I can set things up initially on her Mac in person, and then I need something that requires no effort on her end for this to work. Thanks.

As Sijmons suggests, TeamViewer.com might be the easiest solution (and is frequently my suggestion).  This is a secure connection.
Some alternatives.  You get 2 free AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) accounts.  Setup your iChat client with one AIM account, and then setup your Mom's iChat client with the other.  Then you can use iChat Screen Sharing, as long as your Mom is available to approve the Screen Sharing request.  As a bonus, you can text, audio, or video chat with your Mom over iChat.  An Audio chat while using Screen Sharing will allow you to talk her through things while you demonstrate or watch her and provide feedback and corrections.
LogMeIn.com can be used free for personal use (secure connections used), but it does not provide file transfers (you could use something like Dropbox or insync (from Google) to do file transfers.
You could setup a Hamachi VPN (virtual private network) between your Mom's and your Mac (Hamachi.com free for personal use).  Once you have Hamachi setup, you could then just use Mac OS X Screen Sharing.  This is a secure connection.
A more complex approach is setting up your Mom's home router to port forward port 5900 (see portforward.com), then get a free dynamic DNS name from a service such as No-IP.com or DynDNS.org, and run a dynamic DNS updating client available from the service you get the dynamic DNS name from.  Now you can use Finder -> Go -> Connect to server... -> vnc://your.moms.dynamic.dns.name.  And if you also port forward port 548, you can do file sharing via afp://your.moms.dynamic.dns.name (down side is that this approach is not as secure, and it opens well known ports that might be attacked).
And for the really hardcore, you can port forward port 22 (ssh) and then create secure ssh tunnels that you use for screen and file sharing across the Internet.

  • Windows Server 2008 - How to remotely manage account passwords?

I'm hoping to get direction on how to remotely manage 'user accounts' on Windows Server 2008 machines.  The remote management would be from an automated perspective.  For example, I have a custom application (maybe C#, Java, etc) that runs on one
server that makes connections to various 'Windows Server 2008' servers; and I want it to be able to do the following.
Query Windows Server 2008 box for full list of user accounts
    Update password for user account
    Lock account
    Unlock account
Check policy information to find out when password may expire
I'm trying to find out what may already be available and running on Windows Server 2008 that I can take advantage to get this done programmatically.

I agree with Mekac, the gallery should provide a lot of script of what you want to do.

  • How to remotely control my Mac at home?

I'm at work on a Mac Pro.
I want to control my iMac at home.
Both of the Macs are running OS Lion (10.7.5).
I just bought Apple Remote Desktop software.
How do I connect & control my Mac at home?
    Thanks,
    Wayne

You need something different since Remote Desktop only works on the same network. You were not clear.
    You need one of these:
Set up and use Back to My Mac - Apple Support
    Commercial products like
    TeamViewer, free for non-commercial use
    LogMeIn
    GoToMyPC

  • Remote Management service does not start

Has Novell got a fix for the issue where the Remote Management services
fails to start automatically on XP workstations? As we upgrade our clients
to XP, this has become a major headache. The service can be started
manually, and then the Remote Control feature of ZFD will work, providing
    the firewall is disabled.

Workaround is to create a batch file and put in the command:
    net start "remote management"
Create a shortcut to this batch file and put it in the startup group of
All Users in the "document and settings".

  • How do I connect Keynote Remote via Blue Tooth NOT a WiFi network

Being a novice, at best, "What are the "steps" to connect Keynote Remote, via BlueTooth  MacBook Pro and I-Pad

    Thank you for the reply.
ctrl B makes the top bar (File. Edit. View. Controls. Store. Help.) appear and disappear.
ctrl S makes a side bar appear on the left side of iTunes. It shows the library which has Music. Movies. TV Shows. Apps. Playlists. Ect.
When I did the steps you suggested, my iPhone did not show up in that list.
I checked my firewall settings again, and they seem to be okay. My firewall is the only thing that I am not 100% sure of. If I go to Control Pannel>System and Security>Windows Firewall>Allow an app through Windows Firewall. It shows that iTunes is allowed. I'm not sure if something else might need to be allowed as well though. I have a few Remote options that are not allowed such as, Remote Event Log Management, Remote Scheduled Tasks Management, Remote Shutdown, Remote Volume Management, and Routing and Remote Access. I'm not sure if any of these need to be allowed or not, or if they are even affiliated with iTunes.

  • RVS4000 remote management using SNMP not Supported over WAN

I'm trying to mange the RVS4000 router from the WAN side. I just changed the default password and in the firewall setting:
    Block WAN Request is disabled.
Remote Management is enabled with the default port.
But I am not able to connect to the router remotely (using its WAN IP address). I can ping its WAN IP address fine from the remote PC. The router functions normally (i.e. PC on the LAN can connect to the Internet) but the remote management via SNMP also does not work. In most cases, the router just does not respond to the TCP SYNC or SNMP request from the WAN. Occassionally, it responds to the TCP SYNC fine but when the remote PC requests the HTTP page, it quickly responds with FIN/ACK.
In addition, I can connect to its WAN IP address from the LAN side. But it just does not work from the WAN side.
I tried disabling firewall, IPS, etc, nothing works.

Shoot, I just tried it myself.   Didnt work.   I contacted development team and they told me it wasnt speced to operate for SNMP management (port 161) over the WAN.
Remote  Mgmt on RVS4000 is limited to WebUI access on RVS4000, and SNMP is only  accessible from LAN side.
This  product did not have any requirement to be accessed from Internet using  SNMP.
Very sorry I didnt know this.   Was there a datasheet or paper that indicated this was supported I can correct to prevent this frpom happening to others like us?
You know, I was thnking that the times I used SNMP on SB Routeres was when I was VPNed into the router, then it works, since it is supported on LANB side.  is that an option for you?
Tell us about what typs of things you view walking SNMP from the NOC and we'lls ee if there are alternative ways for you to get the same data.

  • Desktop manager for mac not syncing with calendar

Desktop manager just started to give me a sync error yesterday when syncing the calendar. I receive no error message for the contacts. I use desktop manager for mac. I have never had this issue before. I updated desktop manager yesterday after the sync error but, that did not correct the problem.
    Any suggestions?
    Solved!

    Thanks for the reply yancy.
What error message are you receiving?  Are you only synchronizing to Ical or Entourage?
Also have you attempted to forget the device and the re-setup the synchronization?
To forget the device, go into Device>Forget Device.  Unplug the BlackBerry, plug it back into the Mac.
I look forward to your reply.

  • How to Remotely View a Mac from a Windows XP/7 computer

I would like to know how to, without any cost, view my Mac from a Windows XP/7 computer.
I do have Apple Remote Desktop; however, if I stand correctly, but it can only be used from Mac to Mac. So that would not be of any help. Thank you in advance.

I've used an app called "RealVNC" for windows, you can Google it to find the download. Theres a free version that works just fine.
On the Mac end you have to go into System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Access (not in front of my mac, could be wrong on the "Remote Access" name)
Turn on Remote Access and theres a checkmark in there to allow you to set a password for VNC access.
    That should be it.

  • How to remotely manage OS X Server

I recently picked up a Mac Mini to run a household server, and have installed Server from the App store.  In the past to manage an X-Serv I used either Server tools or Apple Remote Desktop to access the server and managage it remotely.
For home use I do not have a license to ARD, and at $79 do not plan on buying it.  It seems the server tools have been depreciated.
I get the feeling that what Apple expects me to do is download Server on my Macbook as well as on the Mini and use that to managage the Mini.
Is that the cannonical way these days?
I know I can shell into it, but most of the managment is set up for GUI rather than command line and trying to remember the differences between LINUX and DARWIN is not something I want to get into at home.

Lots of ways to manage it remotely:
Screen sharing via LogMeIn (free).  www.LogMeIn.com
Establish VPN session to your server's network, and then run a copy of the server admin software on your local mac, and it will see the remote server over the VPN, and manage it.
SSH access (command line access).  Good for various command-line things.  Especially helpful for issuing that quick reboot command when things have gone terribly wrong and nothing else is working..
Screen sharing (VNC) tunneled over SSH pipe.  I use this option of built-in screen sharing, because it means I don't need to leave any extraneous screen sharing ports open at my firewall, and I restrict SSH access on my server to only those with valid certificates.  Limiting SSH login to certificates only, prevents script kiddies from trying to brute-force the server passwords.
I've added an "alias" line to my ~/.tcshrc file, to automate all the complicated keystrokes of opening an SSH pipe, mapping it to the VNC port (VNC port 5900 piped to local port 1200), and then opening a VNC session over that piped port.  I specify the ssh port 22 in my alias with the -p option.  Port 22 is actually the default SSH port, but on my server, I actually have SSH listening on a differentport, to make my server more obscure to the attackers.  Iembed the actual port my server is listening on in the alias line, instead of port 22.
    Add to ~/.tcshrc
    alias servervnc 'ssh -p 22 -f -L 1202:localhost:5900 \!:1 sleep 10 ; open vnc://localhost:1202'
Then invoke in a terminal session as follows:
    $ servervnc [email protected]

  • Blackberry desktop manager for mac not working

    Hi guys,
New to Blackberry yesterday and hitting a few problems, wondered if anyone had any advice, any mac users a bonus.
I installed the Desktop Manager from the CD that came with my Curve 3G onto my mac yesterday, that installed fine.
I then connected my phone and loaded the application up, it backed up fine, but when I went to Applications it told me I needed to install the latest version.
I went to the Blackberry site and downloaded it from there to make sure I had the latest version, although I'm sure they were the same builds as on the CD
I uninstalled the one I installed from the CD and tried again with the one I downloaded from the Blackberry site, but  It still flags up the same error that this is not the latest version.
I've had a quick browse on the net and it seems other mac users have had the same problems, does anybody have any ideas what's going on?
    Thanks
    Shaun

I'm having what seems to be the same problem and it's driving me crazy.
I just installed BlackBerry Desktop Software 2.0.0 (it's the only one I've ever had installed) and every time I open it and click "Applications' I get a window that says "A newer version of BlackBerry® Desktop Software is required to update the software on your device. Please download an updated version and retry."
At the same time a "Install/Remove Applications" window opens behind this window but nothing is listed, then the window disappears and "Device update cancelled" appears in the bottom left corner.
If I clicked to download the updated version before both windows disappeared, I get a "Download Progress" bar that says "Downloading updates. Please Wait."
It eventually times out and I get a window that says "The update download failed with the following error: The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -3003.)"
Anyone with this problem found a resolution? I've been searching around for nearly 2 hours and nada.

See item #17 of this post.
If you want to delete all Time Machine backups for a particular Mac, just mount the Time Capsule's disk (probably called "Data" unless you renamed it), then drag the appropriate "sparsebundle" file to the trash.

Can you clarify what the error message is that you're receiving?
Also what version of BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac are you currently using?  To download the latest software go to: www.blackberry.com/desktop
Also have you tried to Forget Device and then re-setup the synchronization with the BlackBerry.  Go to Device>Forget Device at the top of BlackBerry Desktop Software.
